13 Halal-Friendly Dining Destinations in and Around New Orleans

"Situated on a busy corner of Magazine Street in the Irish Channel, Anatolia is one of New Orleans’s biggest, most centrally-located halal-friendly hubs, specializing in Turkish, Greek, and Middle Eastern specialties. The charming dining room and surprisingly shielded sidewalk seating are both swell options for lunchtime people watching over plates of halal-friendly skewers, wraps, platters, and kebabs." - Clair Lorell, Beth D'Addono

We were a little skeptical when we entered as noone was dining there. We ordered an appetizer and dinner. They did not disappoint! The serving size is generous and the prize is fair. On the down side, $2.45 for a 12 oz can of coke is a bit much. That price with fountain drinks I don't mind. Also the service was "meh". For not being busy the server was not attentive. Overall, a decent experience.

Google
While everyone was very kind, their executive functioning was a bit disarrayed. The food was good, but the desserts were amazing (künefe and katmer). Unfortunately, the kitchen made it for us and then wouldn’t make anymore because there was apparently enough room on the grill for food and desserts. I would have been fairly upset if I’d gone all that way for some of my favorite things and couldn’t get them. I heard other customers turned down when asking for it. The food is great and the people are kind, I do hope they figure out the kitchen situation and go when it’s less busy to ensure you can get whatever you want!

Google
This place was really good. So I was very sad when we walked in and the tables were all empty when it was a busy day on magazine. The flavors were perfect, fresh, spicy, delicious! Everything you want in Mediterranean food. Definitely stop in and give this place a shot. The prices are very reasonable!

Beautiful lanterns, lovely menu item selection. We loved everything we ordered. Recommend Iskender, triple platter and yogurt dip. They were understaffed, so with only a few tables the wait times for water and check were longer than desired.

Last minute stop late on a Sunday evening. Having never heard of it before, we were somewhat skeptical. Boy are we glad we went! Food was delicious and fresh. The portions were generous. Heads up on the Turkish Kunefe dessert. It takes about 20 minutes from the time you order it. So make sure you order it before you finish your dinner! 😊

Google
I cannot rave enough about this place (Soon to be Anatolia)! Amazing Turkish food and the service was wonderful. Chef Murat is one of the nicest people and does an incredible job making each item on the menu. Their baklava is made from scratch and a must have. So excited for this place and will be back many times to try everything on the menu!

Google
Great location and well decorated restaurant. The food was at the table quickly. I ordered the falafel wrap, but without tomato. The pita itself was probably one of the best I have had. The falafel wrap was bland. Requested the hot sauce, that too was bland. The falafel I received had tomatoes. We were trying to get to the airport, but the waitress seemed a bit perturbed when we requested the bill be provided quickly. The turkish coffee presentation was excellent. Qty was quite small, but taste was excellent.

We had the appetizer platter, the Adana Kebab & the Kibby plate (pictured). It was delicious. We sat outside to enjoy the fresh air. Would recommend.

Yelp
We were in the mood for mediterranean so decided to try Anatolia. I have been to Anatolia many years ago but it's been a while. We started off with the appetizer plate which was large and offered a tapas variety of appetizers including dolmas, falafel, hummus, baba ganoush and others. the appetizer plate was good with good flavors, and the only suggestion would be better bread. for the main course we got spinach pies and three meat plate. the three meat plate was plentiful of meat and was a good portion and good flavors. the spinach pie came two and was decent but the flavor was average and i've had better elsewhere. overall good flavor, good portion and overall good experience

Yelp
My bestfriend and I had decided to stop by House Of Kebab for dinner and our experience here was truly exceptional. (I believe they might be under a new administration) From the moment we entered, the welcoming atmosphere and attentive staff made us feel right at home. The menu offered a delightful array of dishes. Every bite was a culinary delight, we are still impressed at how fresh and full of flavor everything was. We can't wait to return again and explore more of their delicious creations. I highly recommend House Of Kebab! Absolutely delicious!!!

Yelp
Stingy portions. We got one very thin piece of lamb, it didn't even taste like lamb. 4 vine leaves for 8 bucks. The waitress was too into having a conversation with a customer about his career. There was nothing on the menu that mentioned that the lamb was spicy and i couldn't eat my wrap. The chips were overcooked and the hummus was cold. Doesn't recommend. It was my birthday and all i wanted was middle Eastern food. Im so disappointed.

Yelp
I mistakenly thought that they had changed with their name but turns out it's the same crappy food and service since it was Anatolia. Only reason we tried it is bc Shawarma on the Go is not always open. I should have ordered pizza. Or cat food. Either would have been better. They screwed up my order, delayed it being ready by an extra 30min, handed me the wrong persons bill, and forgot the pita bread for the baba ganouj. Actually the baba was the only good thing in the order, I must admit. The rest was crap, severely overpriced, the gyro served on a flour tortilla and their tatziki is made with nonfat yoplait I think. Utter garbage. Can't wait to see what takes its place when it closes. Which will inevitably be soon, given this performance.

Yelp
I had a very nice lunch experience here. Would love to come here more often if I lived closer. Fun location and convenient street parking. Fast, friendly, attentive service. We came at 11:30 on a Sunday and it was slow. Fantastic food!!! They had some nice handmade grape leaves - they had beef or vegetable options. Highly recommend their spicy ezme and baba ganouj.

Yelp
I know I liked this place at some point but things have changed. It wanted a nice atmosphere to have a solo lunch and was craving Mediterranean. I wish I'd ignored the ambiance and just gone to another spot. The server/hostess was friendly and it really is a great location and perfect space. I ordered the chicken shawarma wrap with tzaziki and a Lebanese tea. I waited a little while and everything came out together, no water, so I was ready for a beverage. The wrap was a tortilla so nothing special and the shawarma just didn't have any flavor. They may have forgotten the tzaziki or that was lacking in flavor too. I'll probably stick with shawarma on the go or other spots in the area going forward. A side or fries would have been a good addition too. I saw on my way out that fries were included with the shawarma wrap as a lunch special of the day but I guess they left that out for mine. The tea wasn't my favorite. It had a strong chemical taste (maybe red dye) and few pine nuts. Not my favorite meal but maybe other meats are better. This one left me wanting.

Yelp
I thought AMC has been one of the better Mediterranean places because it had a little Turkish touch from the beginning. It was as closest to the authentic. I recently learned that the restaurant changed hands and now being operated by Turks. The name has been changed to Mediterranean Kebab House. The Turkish kebabs and döner has been so widespread in Europe, one chef claimed the döner was German! So, i finally tried it tonight. I learned that the owners had kebab business in eastern Türkiye, they immigrated to the United States. So, if they could please their customers back in old country, they shouldn't have any problem here. Indeed their Adana kebab was very authentic. Tasty and juicy with usual accompaniments. I did not have a chance to try other menu items but other Turkish patrons present at the restaurant reported that the appetizers were very good. Additionally, they are grilling their kebabs on wood charcoal fire, which makes all the difference.

Yelp
Been coming here for over 5+ years and slowly my opinion on this place has been going down and down Price of food has gone up and portions have decreased, used to get combination plate and it would come with 2 lamb chops and more food now they reduced it to 1 and price is up, I would need 3 plates to fill me up and I'm just a slim guy 160LB... What really made me never come back is this though, before I came here for my birthday and after getting the bill there was miscommunication and I left a $50 tip and was charged also automatic tip. That day I called them and they refunded me the lesser amount when I went back 1 week ago I took some friends there and once the bill came out I asked her in front of everyone was a tip taken out or no? She replied no and jokingly said leave me 80% I left her 18% but I didn't look at my receipt until a week later which is my fault. Well here is the receipt I've attached a photo. What's worse is I left her 18% and we also gave them $20 cash Strong believer everything happens for a reason and this was the final reason to not come back here I left the 18% tip so I'm honestly not sure how they calculated a $28 tip, I was going to call them and make complaint but honestly I'm fed up with this place after this incident

Yelp
Food and service were absolutely excellent. No issues whatsoever in reservation or order. Staff is very friendly and helpful! Family tray was top notch!!

Yelp
I enjoyed everything I ordered. It was cool that they had both doner and gyro (often it's one or the other). The doner was really good! I loved the halloumi and labneh. I'll order exactly the same when I go back! My mom wasn't a fan of the spinach pies but my dad liked the gyro and they were nice about him asking for it to be prepared with/without this and that. We easily got a reservation, and it wasn't too busy (but there's not many tables there and there was only one server/hostess!)

Yelp
Delicious, home style Mediterranean (Middle Eastern) food. The entree plates came with your choice of meat, pita bread, rice, salad, and hummus. Yum! Polite and friendly service, and a menu with something for everyone. Baba ganoush was well made - worth adding it on. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Yelp
The best Kabobs ever in New Orleans. I love the shish kebob and hummus. Every time we are thinking of eating out we go to Anatolia. Friendly staff and great service. The prices are really reasonable, specially in compare to other Mediterranean restaurants. Also the quality of food itself is very good. The Lebanese ice tea tastes so different! I enjoy the Mediterranean environment and music over there.

Yelp
Really impressed! We went and sat outside because the weather was nice. Service was friendly but a little slow at first. My friend ended up going inside and asking for water from the counter since it was so slow. I think there was one waitress for the whole restaurant which is what was taking so long. But we were very happy when the food arrived - the appetizer platter was huge and beautiful!! We also loved the labneh and the spinach pie. There was a lot of flatbread on the side. This place is a hidden gem, I will definitely be back!

Yelp
I agree with one of the most recent posters... this place is going downhill. I used to come here a lot for lunch when I worked a couple blocks away. The same server was always working and she ROCKED!! There were a couple times I went and had another server and she was horrible, nice but not a good server. Went today for lunch, after not going for probably about a year, and the prices have skyrocketed!!! They have also taken shawarma off the menu as an entree. We left after looking at the prices and not wanting to pay that much for lunch. I'm very disappointed because I used to love coming here. The food was so good. I can't speak for the food today because we didn't eat. I hope they figure this out because I don't want them to go out of business. I feel like the food is still really good because I think I recognized one of the chefs when I was there. Maybe just go for dinner and not lunch?

Yelp
Ordered takeout. Just a BUMMER! $40 for two chicken shawarma plates. The portions were so small for $20 a plate. Hummus just barely covered the bottom of the container. Ordered tzatziki but realized it wasn't in the bag once we got home. Just feel let down.
google avatar

Samet K.

Yelp
Restaurant was cozy, traditional and cool. I tried Kibby and Meat pie as appetizer i highly recommend it. As a dinner i ordered Beyti Kabob it was ok, i prefer handmade bread instead of tortilla.

Yelp
I had a craving for a chicken shawarma sandwich. Anatolia kept popping up in my feed so I decided to try it. The price point was right and the delivery time for Door Dash was exactly what I needed. The delivery was prompt and on time. However, upon opening my sandwich I immediately noticed that my sandwich was not wrapped in pita bread. It was a tortilla!!! I was like hold up now!!! Yet I digress. I took a bite and the tomatoes were sweet and delicious. However the bottom part of the lettuce was wrapped in my sandwich.... Eeewwww. I took it out and kept eating. Then I realized the chicken was not as if it were shaved from a spit. Apparently it had not been spinning for hours being roasted and toasted to juiciness. I am disappointed. I have been left unsatisfied as if my bottle of Coca Cola was flat. A flat bottle of Coca Cola is how I have been left to spend the rest of my day. Disappointing.I ordered a gyro for my husband. One star for the lettuce butt, not having my shaved chicken, and the gyro looking like something from the frozen food section that was reheated.

Frida L.

Yelp
I got food poisoning eating here. My friends all got sick too. Never going back. Not a good experience at all.

Yelp
My husband and one of his best buddies had lunch at Anatolia and have been talking about it ever since. I had to know what was what so I headed over there for lunch as soon as I got the chance and knew I'd be in the area. This is a cute spot on Magazine where there are lots of pay-to-park spots in front, and there's also ample free parking on the side streets. I was welcomed and asked to sign in, then seated. The lady who waited on me was friendly, and also helpful when it came to menu questions. I had the hummus and a Greek salad. I added gyro meat for an additional fee. The hummus and pita were tasty, but please note that there was a little scoop of something in the middle of the hummus that you really need to mix in. It's spicy and flavorful and made the hummus what it was. The salad was not your run of the mill Greek salad. The flavor of the dressing was a little different from any Greek salad I'd had before. I can't put my finger on what I was tasting but it was good. The added gyro meat made the salad a hearty meal. It was tender and delicious. I can't leave out your decor. It was simple but very cool. The pendant lamps chandeliers are beautiful and in the corner was the largest hookah I've ever seen. Service was amazing and I enjoyed the food.
google avatar

Yelp
Anatolia is a great Mediterranean option on a walkable part of Magazine. Whether you're dining in or taking out, quality is awesome and portions are large. Everything I've tried on the menu has been delicious. The service is always quick and the employees are super nice.
google avatar

Yelp
Authentic Turkish meal which is hard to find in the states generally. Meat comes from the roaster and served with all the essentials minus the real Turkish bread which of course it's understandable. Flavors were to the point and very fresh.

Tee S.

Yelp
Very good food. Our party had a little of everything. The service was prompt. We sat outside on a beautiful day and it was a a good meal.

Yelp
Out and about the Garden district on a really humid day and hubby wanted to check out the magazine street nearby as I was complaining that I wanted to get indoors . Who wouldn't on such a crazy day!! Well we came to this place after looking it up on yelp. I wanted to eat something light , refreshing and Greek salad sounded delish! This is an amazing little spot to check out some really tasty Mediterranean fare.Being vegetarians , we chose the spicy ezme and falafel from the appetizer section. And of course my Greek salad! We have never had Ezme before and I think it tasted just like our South Indian Thakkali(tomato) chutney we have with idli/dosai, except with some additional spices and olive oil. Loved it with the warm pita and the hot falafels that also came with its own sauce. I don't eat or like sweet dishes very much BUT decided to try the Kanafeh! It's both sweet and savory and delicious. The place is lovely , clean , warm folks and some excellent ( veg ) food! Please do try this out if you live In the area or are passing by . Do try the Kanafeh dessert!!

Yelp
Definitely just "Meh. I've experienced better." As a lover of Mediterranean food I was not pleased. I got the Chicken shawarma plate with 2 sides of hummus. the price is reasonable but the food was not anything to brag about. What the food lacked in taste this location made up for in service. Nice staff and lovely atmosphere. Located on magazine street so be prepared to pay for parking.
google avatar

Yelp
Just yummy! Would love to get food here again. Everything was well prepared and at the right temperature. Will get food here again

Yelp
Love Gyro plates and Anatolias is an amazing place to enter into a world of Mediterranean cuisine. The team there very friendly and the service is just right. If you want to relax and engage your palate to amazing flavors, come to Anatolias.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
We were walking by and stopped for a small lunch. We are glad we did! Stuffed Grape leaves, falafel, and hummus were very good. Delicious and artfully presented. Our server was friendly and very attentive. I would go back in a heartbeat. I would highly recommend!
google avatar

Low F.

Yelp
Had a chicken shawarma and a gyro. Both were excellent. The real star here is the genuine gyro meat. It's not the nasty preformed log of meat sold everywhere else. Nope. This place is using meat properly sliced, marinated, and then layered on the spit by hand. Very, very few places still do this so they should be proud to be providing such a good sandwich. I'd eat there once a week if I lived nearby.
google avatar

Yelp
This place was absolutely incredible ! It was very comforting to walk in and be greeted by the host who sat us and immediately got our drink and appetizer order. I ordered the meat pies and my girlfriend wanted the Labneh so we got both and wow is all I have to say. The meat pies were definitely fresh and homemade and just really hit the spot. I ordered the Triple Plate which was phenomenal, all the meats were cooked to perfection. My girlfriend ordered chicken schwarma plate and she loved it as well. Last and certainly not least we ordered the baklava and we actually ordered it to go as you can see in the picture but we ate it before we got the check back lol. I will definitely be visiting this place again soon !
google avatar

Munzer Q.

Yelp
The food here is fresh delicious and full of taste. The place has a great feel with beautiful layout and wonderful music. The service is outstanding. The food is fresh and cooked on demand. Everything was tasty and fresh. Go and try it. Enjoy.

Mary R.

Yelp
Absolute best Mediterranean food I have ever had. Apart from the lovely, light atmosphere and warm service, the food was top tier. My sister and I shared the appetizer platter and then we each ordered a gyro wrap. Definitely one of our go to spots now. Absolutely amazing!!!
google avatar

Taylor C.

Yelp
Amazing food. We went to a old, famous restaurant in the French Quarter the night before. This was 2-3x better. Kind and friendly staff, great food.
google avatar

Antoinette S.

Yelp
Hosted my bday dinner here with 15 guests. Great food, quick service, and BYOB made it fun for all!
google avatar

Tiff D.

Yelp
Appetizer of a soup and falafel. I hated the soup. There's not a lot of food I've ever hated. It was so bland, basically like a canned tomato soup. Super disappointing since I ended up here just for a lentil soup craving. Falafel were ok but a bit dry. I got the combo platter for my meal and it wasn't the best ever but I enjoyed it. Chicken shwarama, gyro, and doner with hummus and salad. First time I've seen doner in Nola. Subbed salad for rice no problem. The dressing had a mint flavor that I didn't care for. Price was good for the portion and service was great. The waitress took the soup off the bill without hesitation. The cooks asked how our meal was from behind the kitchen counter. Very welcoming staff but just not my favorite Mediterranean food.
google avatar

Kristen S.

Yelp
Service was quick and friendly, and the restaurant was clean. The pita and hummus appetizer was delicious. Lamb gyro was really tasty. Salad was fresh and filling. I would definitely return here!!
google avatar

Charity B.

Yelp
Their hummus is delicious! Enjoyed the red lentil soup. Kind server. Highly recommend for no frills, quick, very tasty Mediterranean food!!

Yelp
I have a coworker who has been trying to get me to come here for the longest time. I live in kenner so the drive has always made me hesitant. However, I decided to join him today for a new experience...and I was SO surprised. The venue is small and friendly. The staff is kind and helpful. I ordered the combination plate to try a little bit of everything to get a proper feel for this place and I was absolutely blown away. The food is made fresh and even though the wait was longer then I'm used to, (and I cannot stress this enough), it is extremely worth it. Everything was great, everything was tasty, and everything was a tender new experience on my tastebuds that I am already eager to try again. Want good Mediterranean food? This is it. Go downtown, explore the city, see the sites, THEN COME HERE. The food is easily 5/5 and the baklava -whatever that is- is marvelous. I had the pleasure of trying a fresh order that just came out of the oven it seems. Please do yourself a favor and try this place out. The only thing you will regret are your pst experiences of going to different, mediocre restaurants.

Yelp
So, so good. Saw this place mentioned in NOLA Eats and we decided to give authentic Turkish food a try. I'm just getting over the flu so I wasn't able to eat much-- just ordered the Arabic Lentil Soup (delicious) and shared the Labneh App with my hubs. He ordered the Iskender and was very pleased with it. This dish is substantial. I took two pictures in an attempt to get it all but it also came with a plate of pilaf that I didn't get a shot of before he dove in! The Iskender comes with a big portion of labneh so unless you love it and can't get enough of it, I'd suggest not getting the labneh if you order the entree. I'd also like to add that the hummus was great and tasted of the simple ingredients: chickpea, tahini, lemon. Yum!! We will be back to order the rest of the menu!!

Elizabeth P.

Yelp
Overrated. We chose it because of its high rating, and it did not live up to even our managed expectations. We expected decent food and quick lunch. Basically, think a certain level of quality & competence with 4 stars and above rating. Gyro and falafel tasted like bought from a grocery store and microwaved. The skimpy portioned babaganoush and hummus also clearly from a terrible store bought container. With four tables at different points in their service, their short-handed staff couldn't handle that and some take out orders. Be acceptable to overlook the challenged service if food even remotely up to standard. Their back of the house disorganization was obvious and again anticipate better outcome with 4 star rated restaurant.
google avatar

JIm H.

Yelp
Terrific tacos and a varied menu. Definitely recommend. I had the chicken verde taco, the Barbacoa taco and two sides: the fried plantains and mango curried rice!

Yelp
Anatolia's is one of my favorite local Mediterranean restaurants. I've been served inside the restaurant as well as through UberEats delivery service. Inside the restaurant, the server/hostess is incredibly kindhearted, quick, helpful, and a model for good customer service. Even the chefs are super friendly (even from a distance for social distancing under the pandemic). Their cleaning was superb and kept us all feeling safe from any risks under COVID-19. The food is DELISH! My favorite is the chicken kabob. The chicken is so fresh and has a crisp charcoal outside from the grill which gives it an exciting bite. Highly recommend and will be continuing as a regular!!!
google avatar

Liam E.

Yelp
Every time I go to NOLA, Anatolia's is my go-to for lunch. Their lentil soup and Greek salad are beyond delicious. I wish I could eat here everyday! The service is amazing and the staff so friendly.
google avatar

Seante R.

Yelp
Great spot if you want fresh food! The pita was soft yet crispy and still warm when I got home to eat it. The chicken was very flavorful but slightly over cooked making it dry. Will definitely be returning! They have daily specials, so make sure you ask about their special of the day when you order.
google avatar

Brianna B.

Yelp
I love Mediterranean food and decided to get lunch here. It's a solid Mediterranean spot in Nola. It didn't blow me away, but I'd come again when I'm craving a Greek salad. I ordered the Tabouli salad and Arabic red lentil soup. The tabouli was fresh and flavorful, although it was just a *tad* too lemony for me. But otherwise it was well done. The red lentil soup was also great. The flavors were really tasty, I guess I just didn't realize the soup was going to be a lentil broth versus a heartier soup. It's not that I didn't like it because like I said, the flavors were great, I just don't love brothy soup. If you like broth however, this is a delicious soup! Additionally, i ordered my lunch through yelp/grub hub and it was fresh and patiently waiting for me when I arrived :) for nola, i think this is a solid Mediterranean spot, but overall it was just decent for me. With that said, being that I used to live in Astoria, Queens, my bar for Mediterranean food is probably higher than most people. So all in all, this wasn't my favorite, but yes I'd recommend Anatolia and yes I'd visit again.
google avatar

Sheri C.

Yelp
I may need to return here tonight, now that I look at this. FYI I am always hungry, and Anatolia did not disappoint! I got to try cay for the first time (Turkish tea), and it's lovely. I had the chicken kebab and it too was nice - chicken was not over seasoned, and I got the Turkish rice. Oooh! for dessert, of course, I had the baklava because I am weak, with Turkish coffee. Oh, I cannot wait to return. Parking was easy on Magazine street, but I imagine on busier days/evenings, it will be more difficult. Stop in and enjoy!!!
google avatar

Julia C.

Yelp
This place is located in garden district on busy magazine street among other shops and cafes. The food is Arab version of Turkish food. The spices and the variety offered is close to Arabic cuisine. The restaurant setting is casual with tables spread out from each other. The menu has many options including few vegetarian plates. The kibby and humus are good however the meat kababs were overly cooked, dry and lacked the flavor. The place got quite busy halfway through our meal and service started to lack. Overall it was an average dining experience.
google avatar

Elham A.

Yelp
Great food, awesome Turkish music, and perfect service. We came with a group of friends and the owner surprised us with a delicious dessert for being their guest for the first time. Sure we came back again. Thanks!

Ismail B.

Yelp
Food was great and the kid loved it. Service was quick and went very well. The ambiance was cool with classic instrumental music. Very good halal restaurant to eat in New Orleans.

Ishmael L.

Yelp
If I were rating food alone, this would be 5 star. I got the chicken shawarma. Top 3 I've ever had. I had to get extra pickles and thoum, because I love that combo of flavors. I'd recommend anyone else do the same, as the sandwich is a little light on both. Chicken was moist and very flavorful. All the accompanying elements were fresh and tasty. Service was a bit slow, but that's forgivable given Covid protocols in NOLA and the difficulty in finding staff. I would caution that the facilities could use some attention. The tables are blistering and the doors to the restrooms were covered in grime. Honestly, a little cleaning and paint go a loong way. I'll definitely return.
google avatar

Shannon S.

Yelp
Some very nice folks running the place that were very passionate about their food. They never seem to be very busy so it should be easy to grab a table here most of the time. The food is overall pretty good when done correctly but sometimes they seem to get inconsistent with less optimal results. Some items seem to be better executed at other area places like Mona's and Shawarma On The Go to my taste but your experience may differ. They do have some things that are just a bit different than most of the other Middle Eastern places so vive la différence and give this place a whirl when you want something a bit off the normal experience.
