The Best Dishes Eater Portland Ate in April 2025 | Eater Portland

"Operating as a Mexican-fare pop-up inside a busy downtown café, the blueberry tamal—often paired with a cafe de olla—is described as "an affordable taste of the fine dining life for nearby workers’ lunches." The reviewer praises the tamal: "It’s creamy, the softness of the masa mingling with the actual cream on top. It’s moist and hot, gratefully, as dry tamales suck. Its crumble is delicate, and the blueberries' deep, fruity flavor sings through. Dashes of pistachio make for a smart counter-balancing crunch." The recommendation is emphatic: as the reviewer puts it, "walk don’t run" to this pop-up. — Paolo Bicchieri, associate editor" - Brenna Houck

Came here on a weekday afternoon with my husband and had a great experience. We ordered the chicken enchiladas plate he chose red sauce and I had green. Both were delicious. The horchata was amazing, and the micheladas really hit the spot. We’ll definitely be back!

Google
Food was great. Chips and salsa was fantastic. Sopes were just okay, the dough was a little over cooked for my liking, but for sure with the stop. My partner had the Mole Rojo and said it was top notch.

Google
Came here with my wife and we had a michelada and enchilada plate. I had red and she had green sauce. Both were amazing. Very flavorful and the miche was very thirsty quenching. Will definitely be coming back. Service was great as well!

Russ L.

Google
My second time here and I must the food is delicious and authentic tasting. The service is warm and welcoming. The Mole was a good level of sweetness to it but good flavor. Fried Fish is excellent, very moist inside. The Birria Quesadilla is tasty, full flavor. Looking forward to coming back soon. They Menudo on the menu on Sundays.

Google
Wonderful place. Delicious food and great service. The chips and salsa is very flavorful. Tacos are served with their home made tortillas and very delicious. The chilaquiles was an absolutely massive plate as well. The highlight was the Capirotada. It was absolutely delicious and they put their own spin on it. They place the bread pudding in a warm tres leches style mix and top it with a scoop of ice cream. It was one of the best desserts I’ve had in a restaurant.

Google
Very good food! The French toast was thick and rich. And the Mexican food felt authentic. With tip about 25$ per person. 10 out of 10, would go again.

Google
First time here, I ordered avocado toast with egg and a Pepsi zero, service was great and the food was really good. Definitely will be back again to try different things on the menu.

Raquenel C.

Google
Everything was very good, café de olla was so delicious, huevos rancheros can be order with green or red salsa, breakfast burrito was big, and they keep asking if we were doing okay.

Yelp
I was in the area and decided to try this place out again. I was greeted and seated. 2 menus and 2 waters were given to us. Our waitress came back a few minutes later and ordered a Menudo bowl , Beef tamale, Mexican Rice, Beans, and a Mimosa. I must say the food was outstanding! Also, our waitress kept coming back and asking how we were doing which was very professional on her part. Made my visit here all so wonderful. I am the first to admit that I was wrong about this establishment. At my last visit, I gave this place a bad review. I am honestly appalled about the comments I have previously stated. A 360-degree turnaround, night, and day experience! All the workers were all so sweet and kind this time around. They give you a lot of food for the price given. You don't feel cheated. If you are in the area, please stop by. Nice ambiance with clean restrooms and plenty of parking. Big Kudos! One of my favorite Mexican foods on LB Blvd now. Service is immaculate!

Yelp
My husband and I stopped by on a Friday Night. Ancestros is delicious. We ordered a couple of thing to share, along with a couple of beers. We thought the pricing was very reasonable as we got quite a lot of food. The tortillas are made there too. The Fajitas were cooked perfectly and we also had the verde enchiladas. Service was great. We were greeted right away and our server was constantly on the floor and stopping by.

Yelp
Returned to try their breakfast and the menudo was by far the best thing we had. It came with home made tortillas and all the fixings on the side, including chile. I also tried the chicken tamale plate that came with a side of rice and beans. The chicken was a bit dry, but the green sauce was tasty. The rice and beans were as expected. Overall 3/5 for that dish. Service is great! The staff is extremely attentive.

Yelp
First time trying Ancestros. Was pleasantly impressed! Food was amazing! The flavors were great. Had the enchilada and the torta ahogada. Dug in so quick forgot to take pictures. Service was good considering we were the only ones in the restaurant at the time. Would definitely go back again especially want to try their breakfast.

Yelp
If you're looking for a place where they sell authentic Mexican food this is the place! The best part is that the place is family owned! My mom and I decided to try the food after hearing the rave about the restaurant! The food tastes like I'm eating at home, the agua frescas are delicious. The service was top notch from the moment we walked in and our server was super nice and attentive. Our server offered us some food Chile Rellenos (not on the menu) and my mom could not stop raving about them, she loved them! The place is very lively with nice decorations and good music.

Yelp
I can't say enough about the food & service. My waitress was absolutely amazing. Sweet. Tentative. Very accommodating. This was one of the best Mexican food meals I have ever had. From the chips & salsa to the carne asada meal. The salsa was very unique. I think I could taste the smoked chili. It had such a different flavor. The carne asada was flavorful & tender. Cooked just the way I asked. The flour tortillas were homemade. Soft, thick & chewy. Just the way I like them. The beans were the bomb. Rice was decent. I will definitely be returning. Easy parking right in the front & very clean restrooms.

Yelp
I recently discovered Ancestros restaurant and have already visited three times because the food is both authentic and delicious. I've tried the mole dishes twice: the first time, I had a bone-in chicken leg and thigh, and the next time, I requested mole enchiladas. Although the mole enchiladas aren't on the menu, they are happy to prepare them if you ask. It's rare to find a restaurant that serves mole prepared so well. They also offer Rajas con Queso on the menu, another unique and delicious dish! You can order Rajas with or without meat. Ancestros makes handmade tortillas, both flour and corn, which pair perfectly with the queso fundido appetizer. The staff is friendly, and there are plenty of tables, so you're seated quickly. The interior of the restaurant is nicely decorated, making it a great place for family dinners or special occasions. The prices are reasonable, and the quality of the food and the variety of options are excellent!

Yelp
Food is average. We really just come here for the olla coffee. Other than that sadly for a family of 6 attentiveness is not there specially when they're busy. We didn't get refills, didn't get asked if we needed anything else, have to go up to their hostess table to ask for the bill and containers to go. For a FAMILY restaurant it's not so friendly specially for their floors that are SO slippery and have been close to falling. Not a place we will return. Would rather learn how to make the coffee than to go through this experience again. Farewell ancestors.

Yelp
Such a cute little Mexican restaurant in Bixby Knolls. I recommend getting here early since the parking lot is small. There are some parking spots on street but you may need to walk a bit if it fills up or is on a busy day. We got there right at 9am when they open so we were second in line and were immediately immersed in the cute decor. Plus, they were playing some Selena hits, not Gomez...Quintanilla IYKYK! Our waitress was amazing and I wish I got her name because would love to give her a shout out but my bad...so if you were working Sunday morning, You are great and have AMAZING customer service! After letting her know it was our first time, she gave us some recommendations and asked for our drink order. We both ordered coffee but mine was cafe de olla. It was delicious and had the right amount of spice and sweetness. We ended up ordering the fresh tamale plate (which comes with two tamales of your choice with rice and beans) and the huevos rancheros. Both were really good but a bit spicy. I ordered the pork tamales and they were cooked with perfection. The pork was tender and the masa was soft and fluffy, not too moist. The chiles and spices added to the pork made it flavorful but i would have liked a bit more salt. The eggs on the huevos rancheros were cooked over sunny side up eggs with red sauce. It was a bit spicy but nothing I couldn't handle. The fried tortillas makes the dish that much better. Overall, food and service was great. We will more than likely be back to try the other dishes on the menu. I have a few on my radar especially the dessert.

Yelp
We have been blessed as of late to have great businesses and restaurants within reach of us. This family definitely earned five stars for the clean and welcoming environment they've created. You will not need to question the quality of the food or the taste. Go with confidence that you will be happy and full when you leave. We will be visiting as often as possible
google avatar

Cindy T.

Yelp
First time visit. The homemade tortillas were the best part of the visit. Service was also good, although it wasn't busy. Neither me nor my friend loved our food. She had questions fundido (with chorizo) which was not prepared like either of us expected. She barely ate any of it. I had huevos rancheros divorce style which was fairly bland. Meh. There are better choices in our opinions and we won't be back.

Yelp
We've been meaning to try out Ancestros for some time but were a little reticent because the menu is a little bit limited and there's not a ton for vegetarians. But since we kept hearing good things about it we had to go! Comfortable ambiance, good service - server was super nice and helpful. I got the green cheese enchiladas which were so good - loved the homemade tortillas! My husband got a shrimp taco plate that came with two tacos, rice, and beans. He was obsessed, Great prices, too! I wish it had been busier because I want them to stay in business. We will be back.

Yelp
It was late, and we were craving Mexican food. With only 30 minutes until closing, I almost decided to skip dining in, thinking the food quality might suffer so close to closing time. But I'm so glad we stayed! Our waiter was incredibly pleasant, assured us we had enough time, and encouraged us to enjoy our meal fresh from the kitchen rather than ordering to-go. I was skeptical, but wow--everything was fantastic! The food tasted incredibly fresh, from the warm flour tortillas to the flavorful refried beans, rice, and cactus salad. The place was clean a decoration was right in theme of the place. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his meal, and we both left impressed. I think we've just found our new favorite spot. We're definitely coming back to this hidden gem!

Yelp
This place pleasantly surprised me when we came here for dinner on a Monday evening. It felt like eating at my friend's Mom's house. Executive summary: Depth of flavor:5/5 Food experience:5/5 Service:5/5 Drink menu:4/5 Good for groups:5/5 Quality:5/5 My brother in law ordered the fajita trio which he loved. The table side guacamole was absolutely delicious. My wife had the chicken and shrimp tacos, which she loved. You can tell the tortillas are homemade. I had the Al pastor tacos, which was a flavor bomb. Chicken tacos were also delicious. Staff is super friendly. We will definitely be back. I can foresee the Parking during lunchtime Mani was our server and she gave us 5-star service! The music playing in the background was authentic. The vibe was relaxed and inviting. Get here while it's early or else you'll will have to wait your turn for a table. I highly recommend this place!

Sherri B.

Yelp
I really love this warm and welcoming restaurant formerly the old Pan location. I had chicken mole which was good and it came with rice and beans. The service is outstanding; thus the 5 stars
google avatar

Lis K.

Yelp
I am in town for business and was looking for authentic home cooked Mexican and boy did I find it! I had it delivered as I'm stuck in a hotel but it was still so good, packaged great so it came to me as if I was sitting in the restaurant. I ordered the nachos and I have nothing bad to say at all. They tasted fantastic! I only wish I ordered more of the menu!
google avatar

Carrie S.

Yelp
We did delivery and both got the carne asada plates. It was great flavor and cooked perfectly however we didn't get the homemade tortillas and it didn't come with any chips.
google avatar

Nahum S.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday at like 3 pm and was seated pretty quick. I'm not sure if it's fairly new but there wasn't that many people, I'm guessing a lot come here for the breakfast brunch experience. Our waiter was really nice but I think he had a lot on his plate as he seemed to be the only one there, mind you there wasn't that many people, we ordered an alcoholic drink and an agua Fresca and got two aguas so we told the waiter and he kindly brought us the margarita we ordered. The drink was ok it mainly tasted like a capri sun lol They're margaritas made with wine so if you like that! The food was really good! But the plating was too small and my sopes were coming out of the plate lol same for the torta ahogada the sauce had to be reeled back in but it was good! Honestly it's good but I was tricked with the 4.8 rating lol maybe I should come for breakfast, the ambience is nice they have music playing
google avatar

Krista F.

Yelp
Good place but nothing special. I did appreciate the server making accommodations for my complaining friend because they didn't have what he was wanting. Corn was good but cold, and liked the mocojete lava dish. They also make fresh masa.
google avatar

Tanis S.

Yelp
A delicious new spot in Bixby Knolls. The Mexican corn is a tasty start and the salad and fish we scrumptious. We are back for breakfast and it's equally good.
google avatar

Jim K.

Yelp
Food is delicious and owner is a wonderful person committed to serving authentic Mexican recipes and fresh homemade tortillas. Little touches such as embroidered tortilla warmers and unique glassware demonstrates to the customer that they are special. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Katie C.

Yelp
Was craving chilaquiles. Decided to try a new place and I was glad I did. We came an hour before breakfast ended expecting it to be super busy but we were surprisingly seated as soon as we got there. The servers were all super friendly and the place had a very nice aesthetic. Chilaquiles were very tasty with the added steak. Horchata iced lattes were delicious as well. Will come back to try their dinner options.
google avatar

Iris C.

Yelp
Try this restaurant for the first time on Sunday for lunch and let me tell you the food there is delicious authentic Mexican food. I had the grilled chicken with rajas con queso and I love it. My husband had the mixed Molcajete and I can honestly say that they will feed between 2 to 3 people. They have handmade corn tortillas that are also really good and they use the cutest Mexican dishes.. Their service was very good. The waitress was very attentive. The only issue that I had was that they don't have or at least I don't think they have air-conditioning so it was a little warm but other than that I highly recommend this place. I can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Young S.

Yelp
Enjoyed the steak verde chilaquiles for breakfast. Chips and salsa were great, with a little kick to it. Pretty restaurant, good space with lots of tables, waitress was very nice as well, it's a really good place to visit!
google avatar

Britt H.

Yelp
The carne asada was DELICIOUS! Oh my goodness. Pretty good pricing for the portion also. Loved their ambiance and I love that another small business is open in Bixby Knolls. The service was amazing - we were checked on frequently!
google avatar

Raul G.

Yelp
Great food and great service. The fajitas and Green Enchiladas are a must have. The place makes you feel like you are eating at moms house. First time here and will definitely be back. Come check this placed out for authentic home cook Mexican food
google avatar

Juliet S.

Yelp
This place has been on my list since they opened and I finally got to try it. My husband and I shared the mole plate and the rajas poblanas plate. We got one with corn and one with flour tortillas. Wow these were both so authentic and I felt like my abuelita made it. Both dishes were so flavorful and the tortillas being homemade was what made them even better. It's very rare a Mexican restaurant makes both corn and flour in house. Loved their beans too. I will definitely be returning to support this new small business as it's one of my new favs in the area.
google avatar

Harvey C.

Yelp
It was our first visiting this fine establishment. The service was great and the food was excellent. I did not get a chance to get the name of our server but she was a young lady, very nice and knowledgeable of the menu. The ambience made me feel like if I was in Mexico. I enjoyed the mole and the chips and salsa tasted like they were home made
google avatar

Shanda C.

Yelp
Food is ok but does not justify the prices. Great aguas and tortillas. Decor is cute and I suspect it cost them to redecorate and start up after The Pan left, so I feel for them. The vibe is that a family started a business without knowing how to run a business. The staff are very nice but do not seem confident in their roles, the menu, or the prices. Unsolicited advice: Bring in a GM from a local thriving restaurant for a week to observe and allow them to make some suggestions. Also, the beautiful clear glass separating food prep from clientele should be to see exactly that; all of the delectables being prepared, rather than random cooking items stacked up against the glass. If you're not comfortable with that (honestly, I don't think I would be), put up a non-transparent partition instead. I truly would love to see this family business succeed and thrive but I fear they won't be around very long. I hope I'm wrong.

Home C.

Yelp
Place is delicious and the staff is amazingly helpful The red enchiladas have always been my favorite Cafe de ohs and the deserts are so good
google avatar

Kaye Y.

Yelp
Delicious food wonderful experience and ambiance , very welcoming. Staff was very accommodating and the main cook came out to inquire about the food and made sure we were enjoying ourselves and the food. The chicken nachos were good, you just have to eat quick bebefore the cheese hardens. The stars of our meal were the potatoes taquitos, guacamole and Aguas.. so good and filling. Looking forward to returning to try more of the menu.
google avatar

Olivia B.

Yelp
Great experience during their soft-opening! Nice open space. They have fútbol on all day! Food was delicious! We ordered the Chicken Mole Rojo and Chicken Chilaquiles. I look forward to coming here on a regular since it's close to home.
google avatar

Ruth A.

Yelp
If you grew up eating home cooked Mexican food, this is it! The food has that home cooked sazón that most Mexican restaurants want to have but don't. The tortillas are huge, delicious & hand made. The micheladas are really good, the cafe de olla is perfectly made, not too sweet. The menudo & chilaquiles are really good. Haven't been for lunch/dinner, but definitely will be back. The owners are a very friendly, hard working family and you feel like you are eating at your Tia's house when you are here!!
google avatar

Cristal N.

Yelp
I've gotten pick up a few times & each time the food has been very delicious! Definitely authentic flavors. Today I was finally able to dine in & the service was as great! Our waitress was very attentive. I honestly recommend coming here for some amazing food if that is what you are looking and craving for. Will continue to keep coming in to support!

Yelp
Fresh and delicious dishes. We all have different expectations of delicious. This is delicious! Hahaha. Like us, we had to try this 5 star restaurant at least once. And now, we are going back for breakfast. The server, Angel was kind and professional. The kitchen chef cares about the menu. Due to my diet, the chef accomplished my dish perfectly! We also saw the cleanliness of the environment created a wonderful feel and the music compliments the visual ambiance. Thank you, Ancestros you are what this neighborhood needed.

Yelp
WOW! I haven't had such flavorful and authentic Mexican food like this in a very long time. All food was plated beautiful, their handmade tortillas are delicious. We had a molcajete, all sooo good. The asada, chicken, chorizo, everything in there had such amazing flavor. Honestly, just everything overall was so tasty. The Jamaica and Tamarindo aguas frescas, delicious. The chicken tamale, delicious. The potato taquitos, so flavorful. The sopes, were fried in a red sauce (similar to pambazos if you're familiar with them) so so good. And to top it off, we had the buñuelos with ice cream, WOW. So so so good. I was so surprised to hear they had them as this is such a traditional Mexican dessert that I've never seen a restaurant have before. Think funnel cake but thin and flaky. And this is during their soft opening. Seriously run, don't walk, before they get packed. Because I know they will blow up. The owners are also so so friendly. Please support them, you won't regret it!

Jowen M.

Yelp
Came in to meet a friend on a Wednesday afternoon around 1pm, was seated and served right away. We tried their micheladas, which was bigger than what I was expecting. It was delicious and cute! My friend had ceviche with mango and loved it. She gave it a 9/10, said it was refreshing but she wanted more of a citrus taste to it. It was big enough for two people to share. I had the aguachiles and it blew us away! It was so flavorful, refreshing and filling. I've literally been thinking about it for the past two days. We finished off with their fried bunuelo and it was the perfect sweet treat. The blueberries, strawberries and ice cream balanced perfectly with the fried dough.

Yelp
If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. I never leave reviews. But Ancestros is something special -- a gem that deserves to be shouted from the rooftops before it blows up (and trust me, it will). From the moment you walk in, you're treated like family. Mani, the host and bartender, is an absolute force of hospitality -- welcoming, hilarious, and ridiculously knowledgeable about the menu and cocktails. Then there's the real magic happening behind the bar -- a beautiful, hard-working woman hand-making tortillas right in front of you. She's pressing and grilling them with care, and every few minutes she walks over and places a fresh, warm tortilla directly into your hands like your abuela just showed up to make sure you're fed. It's unreal. Every bite is next-level authentic, from the deeply flavorful salsas to the meats that are marinated and cooked to perfection. The tortillas (yes, I'm going to keep talking about the tortillas) make everything taste like home, even if you didn't grow up eating this way. This place is something rare -- soul, flavor, and people who genuinely care. Get in now before there's a line down the block!

Kerri S.

Yelp
A+ We ordered the pancakes and huevos divorciados. Pancakes were topped with fresh whipped cream, a sweet cream drizzle and strawberries. But the star of the show was how they were cooked. Had a delicate carmelization on the edges - perfecto! Huevos divorciados were divine and served with fresh flour tortillas. We also had Mexican coffee. Highly recommend!! We will definitely be back to try lunch and dinner.

Yelp
What can I say great food! Great service Very clean and organized. Definitely recommended. Will be back soon..

Yelp
The service is great, workers are nice and the food is always delicious! I've came a handful of times now and I always recommend this place to family members!
google avatar

Mace S.

Yelp
Great customer service and food was good , our party like Mexican dishes full of flavor and color, although the food was colorful with vegetables and tradition foods it was in need of a little more spices in our opinion, but judge for yourself and give them a try.
google avatar

Jessica Z.

Yelp
The food here is so delicious! Let's start off with their service. Off the bat, we were welcomed. The host/server was very communicative and very gracious throughout the evening. They gave us chips and salsa to start. Oh my goodness! The salsa was soooo bomb! You could tell the chiles were toasted on a comal before being blended together. For dinner, I tried the green enchiladas (2 cheese, 1 chicken). Also a 10 out of 10. I normally get red enchiladas, but since people were raving about the green enchiladas I decided to give them a try. The green salsa was so amazing. This restaurant knows how to make their salsas! Rice and beans were really good as well. My sister got the carne asada and my mom got the fajitas trio. Each plate came with tortillas a mano. Both said their plates were delicious. I also got a cafe de olla, which was super good as well. Thankfully, I had leftovers. Even on day 2, the food was amazing. I just finished my leftovers and decided to write this review. I will be back to try their breakfast. Also, the decor is so cute and welcoming. Check out the beautiful tiles on their ceiling!

Yelp
Great service, great food what more could you ask for? Give it a try you won't be sorry.

Yelp
Best authentic Mexican food in Long Beach! Been looking for good Mexican food in Long Beach and most of them are not authentic or have some items that are good and some that are not. Everything here was beyond great! We ordered the molcajete, the guac, and the Agua chiles. Everything was hot and fresh. The Aguachiles was made to order prob the best I've had aside from being in Mexico. The tortillas are freshly rolled and cooked to order tasted super fresh. I can't say enough good things I wish I can gate keep this place before it gets super popular. Def will be back soon ! Great customer service and restaurant is clean as well.

Yelp
This place this sooooooo good!!!! Amazing! I haven't found a great place like this in long beach. The food quality is so delicious, the customer service is on point, thank you Justin! The ambiance is nice, i wish they had mariachi just because thats how great the food is. We ordered the green chicken enchiladas with rice and beans. The aguachiles are going to have me on fire later but omg theyre so good! Totally worth it!! We ordered a shrimp cocktail, that was pretty good. We also ordered the sopes, comes in 3 , i ordered 2 asada. Pretty good and one pierna and that was so good. So flavorful!!! Lastly we tried their banuelo that comes with 3 scoops of ice cream, strawberry and blueberries with chocolate drizzle! Must try!!
