Ancestry Brewing Has Opened its Taproom on SE Hawthorne - Eater Portland

"Ancestry Brewing, the Tualatin-based, family-owned brewery with nautical themes, has moved into its new Hawthorne location. The brewpub is currently open on weekends only for limited hours, serving its full menu of wagyu beef burgers, salads, sides, and starters, as well as its full draught list. Its adjacent cafe is fully open every day from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. for coffee, espresso drinks, pastries, avocado toast, and parfaits. The space features a gorgeous copper back bar and reserved nautical aesthetics. The brewery has specific opening dates in June and a grand opening planned for later in the month." - Alex Frane

The fish in the fish-and-chips was a nice cut, however, service was lack-luster. It seemed as tho the large amount of servers was not interested in serving the few customers there. They weren't excited to explain the menu and forgot some things ordered. Basically, if I ever went back it would not be for the fine dining experience. Great view and on a nice day and a person could sit outside with a beer.

Another great Google find. We ended up having a great behind the scenes tour with Suzanne after having our delicious late lunch. My wife had the house-made vegan burger with fries and I had the Philly Cheese Steak with sweet potato fries. We started off with the garden salad and balsamic dressing and I also had the chicken bites. I ordered the six beer flight (you choose your own) which was AMAZING. I can highly suggest Ancestry Brewing for its food, beer and friendly, knowledgeable staff.

Google
We enjoyed our dinner and the service was fabulous. I couldn't believe how fast the food came out too. We had their classic burger, mushroom burger, fish and chips, and clam strips. The fish and clam strips were fabulous and we ordered a second helping of the clam strips. Appreciated their house made tartar too. Parmesan fries were great too. Burgers were average. Partner enjoyed the Nitro Irish Ale which paired well with the seafood. Look forward to coming back.

If you're craving burgers and good time with friends and family while having a drink or two, this is the spot! Burgers are their specialty but the other menu items are equally as delicious. I got the fish and chips and it was good! Not oily at all, not too much batter as well.

Google
Great little place. Has a patio and a nice size menu. I just wanted a quick snack and beer. They have wonderful fries and a fabulous NW IPA I will be back for. It Is around the corner from the ua 290 hall and worth a stop.

Google
We have been going here at least monthly, since they have opened! The food, service, and beers are fantastic! The staff is wonderful, and you can join the mug club, if you're interested 🤪 Well worth it, I say! 😁

Google
We will not be returning to this place. We used to go quite often but the last three times we have had terrible experiences. They are always out of their NA beers. Last night we went in at 7:23 to grab a quick dinner before they closed at 8 and they told us they had already done last call for food and drinks. Wow! They have lost our business.

My new favorite IPA Ancestry’s Best Coast IPA I discovered this great little brewery in Tualatin when a group of my pickleball friends went out to lunch. The food was delicious. I had the Philly cheese steak sandwich and it was superb.. All those around me thoroughly enjoyed their choices as well But my favorite discovery was their Best Coast IPA. It now surpasses my previous favorite beer- luckily, I was able to take some home with me

Yelp
We love Ancestry Brewing. I have supported this business since 2017. Eaten there at least 35+ times and never had a bad meal. Miss their shrimp panko appetizer as it didn't survive Covid. The beer is great. My favorite is the Piney IPA. It's probably my most favorite beer ever brewed. Love it so much that I buy about ten cases a year easy. Also, drink at least one, probably two each time we have eaten there. The purpose of this review is for the poor customer service I received today. I called Ancestry this morning (8/25/24) @11:45AM. As I have done for over seven years, I called in advance to ensure there was a case of Piney IPA available for purchase. I live about thirty minutes away. A female employee answered my call. I introduced myself as Bob and asked if there was a case of Piney IPA in stock. She said, "we don't sell by the case as there is no discount on how many you buy." I explained that I have purchased twelve bottles for $54 numerous times. She said we have some in our refrigerator case. I asked, "Can you put a case aside so I can pick it up later this afternoon?" Her response, "We have enough that it "shouldn't" sell out." I was floored. I didn't want to drive there if I wasn't assured I had a case to buy. There was no way in hell I was going to give Ancestry Brewing a one-star review because they have an employee who lacks customer service skills. How hard is it to put twelve bottles into a cardboard box, write my name on it, and put in a cooler? We drove to Sherwood this afternoon and passed Ancestry. We had planned on eating lunch there, but ate at another establishment. I didn't stop either to see "if" there was beer for me to purchase. As stated, I have followed this process for years. If Vanessa still works there, she knows me well as Piney IPA Bob. She even knows my wife as she has stopped in many times to pick up beer for me. Vanessa has excellent customer service skills. Wish I was drinking a cold Piney while writing this review

Yelp
Service was quick- food came out exceptionally fast! I enjoyed the blood orange cider... it went really well with my burger and fries.

Yelp
Nice place to grab a quick bite and some fun local beer. Don't think twice if you're debating on going.
google avatar

Yelp
The beer was great. A large variety for any beer lover. Staff was very friendly. We didn't eat but it smelled good. Dog friendly but only outside on patio.

Yelp
Came here for lunch with the family. We were seated right away which was nice. We ordered clam strips, French fries, and popcorn chicken for the table. The clam strips were a slam dunk. Highly recommend. Fries were good too. The popcorn chicken was a huge miss though. Instead of breaded pieces of chicken breast, it was processed ground chicken with a breading. Needless to say the kids were not into it. This place is a nice place to grab a beer and fries but I wouldn't come here for a meal. Our server seemed like he was having an off day so service could have been better. Ambiance was typical for beer place. Indoor and outdoor seating available.

Yelp
We stopped in on Sunday for lunch, and everything was yummy!! I got the mahi mahi sandwich w/ fries and it was just what I wanted . Wife got the Ono fish and chips , the only thing was the batter on fish could have used some seasoning, but still delicious. The Nitro Cream is worth coming back for , and our servers, Courtney was very nice !! Nice place!!

Yelp
Popped in for a quick meal and some brews. Beers were good, service fast. Standard brewery ambiance. Cool spot. The food wasn't super great, though maybe we tried something that's not their specialty? We both got fried chicken sandwiches. The chicken was dry.

Yelp
Food and beer are always on point. Had a killer cheesesteak today and the family enjoyed their burgers/salads. Service was good and fast. Saw that they do 4-packs on Tuesdays for 10 bucks!

Yelp
Changed my review based on owner feedback. I stand corrected in one assumption. My apologies for that. My feedback: Beer is good. Tots are cooked well, nice and crispy. Burger is lackluster but the toppings are fresh. Patty was flavorless. It seemed more like a vessel for toppings than a stand alone star. Up the ante on the burger patty and it's a win. Needs something to give it flavor. It was nice and thick again the toppings were fresh which is sometimes rare these days. I'll come back for beer and snacks tho. Not sure about the meal. Maybe other items are more my vibe. I love a good burger but this one was not it for me. (Insert sad trombone)

Yelp
Tried Ancestry Brewing for the first time tonight. Very good! The Which Cane First Chicken Sandwich was pretty good as were the fries. Had the Pineapple Wheat beer and that was very good as well. Our server was great. She actually gave us (me) two beers since we had to wait a bit to order - nice touch! Will definitely be back. I'd recommend you give this a try.

Yelp
Stopped in while visiting Portland. Fast service, good food, great nitro red ale. Good experience!
google avatar

Yelp
Nice staff. Options to eat indoors or on a shaded patio. Food was good. My kids both enjoyed their meals and my husband and mine were good but not overly memorable. Would definitely try again.
google avatar

Yelp
Sad, lonely hummus plate. No pita bread. No feta cheese. Why even have hummus? Beers are okay.
google avatar

Tara B.

Yelp
Love it here. Family friendly with friendly service and good food/beer. Bring the pup and sit outside or just the people and sit inside in the AC cooled area. The portions are generous so come hungry!
google avatar

Yelp
It's tucked away and parking gets full pretty quick so likely you'll have to park and walk a little ways but great for making room for all the delicious food! The inside has a good vibe, its large and open lots of natural light coming in and I noticed they have outdoor seating. Menu is pretty simple. We ordered beer and cider and the fried mushroom appetizer. Burger because of course they go with all the beer. It can get a little loud from all the conversations from tables in there but it works since no one can overhear your convos. All in all it was a great place to enjoy some beer and food.

Yelp
We had visited two exceptional wineries for tastings and wanted to extend the adventure with a beer tasting. We were close to Ancestry and decided to stop in. Simple and understated in a warehouse location, it's surprisingly warm. Could be the gorgeous sunny view of nature out the large paned back windows or the lighting, but it was welcoming for a boxy structure. We were seated immediately at a high top inside. Though quaint, it was too toasty on the patio. I went for a beer flight, requesting a spectrum of the house's choice $9. Liked all but one. Three out of 4 isn't bad at all. The two beers my friends ordered, a mosaic pale $6 and best coast $7, were tasty. We put in our food order, and asked if we could get a tour. The request was immediately honored. It's always fun to see the behind-the-scenes workings. By the time we got back to our table, our food was ready. I had the fish and chips $17 and it was delicious, enough to share. I got a taste of the spicy 3 chili burger $15 which was also good. Great fries. If I lived close by, this would be a hang out.

Yelp
I think I had an unusual experience here because many seem to love it but I wasn't super impressed. My BBQ Bacon Burger was not amazing. While it was decent, it lacked any sort of BBQ flavor and even the bacon wasn't super pronounced. The fries were great, though, I loved those. The service was okay. While everything came out as expected, the waiter was cold and seemed like he had no desire to be there. Which, I understand, everyone has off days, but it still was something I noticed. Lastly, the cider was great. It better be, though, considering "Brewing" is in their name. The cider was definitely the best part (besides the fries) and that's the only reason I'd return.

Yelp
I stopped in for beer and lunch today, and I was only able to obtain the beer. I have been here a couple of times before and the food(especially the Philly cheesesteak) is amazing so I wanted to come back. I got sat pretty quickly, and the server got me my beer within a minute of me sitting down. I was really pleased with that however, she never came back to take my food order. I finished my beer and sat for another 5 to 10 minutes before I finally got up and walked to the bar to pay my tab. I will say it was a little busy but not overwhelming as I saw her serving other tables and bussing tables as well. Super disappointing experience today. I will have to come back to review the food another time. I absolutely love the piney IPA and like I said I know the food is good. This review is based solely on service or lack there of. I will update my rating next time I come back.

Yelp
Up here for business and my group was looking for a cool spot with good beer. We rolled in and this place smelled like beer. The brewery that is attached to the restaurant was jobbing. I am an avid home brewer and love the smell of beer making. We were seated very quickly. The staff was super welcoming and attentive. Within a minute of sitting down, the waitress was there ready for beer orders. Any questions that we had were answered right away. After she dropped our beers off, she came back shortly after for our food order. I ordered the spicy burger. It was loaded with a nice spicy jalop sauce and nice pieces of bacon on there. Man this thing was good. I love heat. I can't say that this burger had a lot of heat but man it was tasty. I would recommend this delicious juicy burger. The side was Cajun tator tots. The Cajun seasoning was a nice tasty spice to the tots. On the table was this fry sauce. Not really sure what was in it but it complimented the meal completely. Overall, this was a great spot to enjoy lunch. If you are looking for some good burgers and beers, this veteran owned spot is a must stop. If you are only stopping for lunch, I would grab a growler or two Togo because you will enjoy their beers at home!
google avatar

Angela P.

Yelp
I would return just for the Apricot/Mango beer. I wish I would have brought my growler to fill. I had the flight tasting that included 4 beers, and unamiously all liked that beer the best. The food is simple pup food, but cooked really well. Like most right now, they must be short stafed, but surpisgly our food came out in lightening speed after placing our order.

Yelp
Sunday clam strips and experimental IIPA. Just in the neighborhood at lunchtime when I saw Ancestry Brewing. I know it was here for a few years but never stopped by the brewery. 11:30 one Sunday, should be a light lunch crowd. Less than a quarter full. I bellied up to the bar and started investigating the beers on tap. There were two IPAs I was interested in. Both very good, the first was hazy and the second imperial. Now food. I don't know their food so I played it safe with clam strips. I was thinking razor clam strips but these were small even tiny clam strips. Ok, I thought, and tried them out anyway. They were actually good even though they were breaded. When other people's orders were ready I start seeing this parade of food coming out of the kitchen. All looked wonderful and I kinda wished I would've made better choices. Next time when in the area I'll step it up a notch. Good beer, Nice food, Comfortable crowd, Pleasant experience.

Yelp
My family and I have been going here for 7 years now and feel the same as day one. The crew has always been friendly and the food is great. Never come home with left overs haha. Great beer selection I recommend the piney. Keep this place alive support Ancestry Brewing!
google avatar

Tia J.

Yelp
We stopped in here as a recommend place via other reviews. The bar itself is a clean, casual place but we weren't very impressed with the food. Our server was friendly once we were acknowledge to get our orders taken. We were told to go ahead and sit down but then couldn't get anyone to come over to take our drink orders for approx. 15+ minutes. We were ready to place food orders at the same time but she insisted on doing just the drinks first and would come back to take food orders. We waited for food for a very long time. The food was definitely not anything we'd recommend others to try over other breweries or restaurants nearby. Both sandwiches were just cheap lunch meat on rolls. There was really not much flavor to any of it. Very basic. Not worth the prices they're charging. They're located in an industrial type building that's not immediately obvious that a restaurant is located there. We had planned to order a second round of drinks but by the time our server came back to check on us we decided we had been there far too long, more than 90 minutes, to want to wait for anything else to get to our table. If you're looking for a selection of different beers to try they have many but we won't be back for food here.
google avatar

Keith L.

Yelp
Still my favorite beers and great food! Noticed Ancestry is finally showing off their beer awards on the menu. Please hang some huge banners from the rafters because your brewery team earned bragging rights!
google avatar

Brittany B.

Yelp
I absolutely love the rotating beers, every beer I've had here has been extremely good. The food too is great quality! My go to is the Philly sandwich, which came first sandwich, spicy burger and fish and chips! All winners. The owner Jerry is a great guy along with his family that works with him there. Servers are always wonderful! It's fun to be able to see the beer brewing through the glass as well, great ambiance.

Yelp
This review is strictly based on the evening service of 3/9/23. My wife and I are longtime customers since this location opened. The menu is varied and everything I have had I would have again. Beer options are lengthy with Pale, IPA, Pilsners and Lagers and more. Wines as well. Overall a preferred place in my book This evening we arrived 8PM at for dinner. moderately crowded but ample seating. Hours are published as 11:30am-9:00PM. Not sure if the owner or store manager greeted us but was very polite and served us drinks and dinner quickly. Last call was offered maybe 8:40 and I asked if we would be kicked out at 9 if I ordered another drink as I had not quite finished the one I had. I was told that was fine. At 9:00PM We were told to leave by the closing woman. She did not say can you finish up soon, she said you need to leave as the restaurant is empty and she woul like them to go home. Fair enough, however it was 9:00 PM on the dot. There was still someone drinking at the bar with a full beer who I now guess was an employee who did get asked to leave. When I said your hours are until 9PM I was told that that was not mandatory or an Oregon requirement??? I then said yeah, well your hours are posted as 9PM as we were walking out. Her comment to me was "Get over it....Whatever". I have been here many times after the doors are closed, along with others who are finishing their drinks and/or dinner. Look, the restaurant was empty at 9PM except for the guy/employee drinking at the bar who was not asked to leave. A 10 minute heads up would have been nice if she wanted us to leave although they served e a 16oz beer 20 mins prior so have some expectation that I may not toss that all back that quickly. This woman clearly has little customer service exerience and as a representative of the restaurant could have handled way different. Again, we were out the door at 9PM This was the first time I had ever seen this team. The other employees hhave been here since I can remember, through COVID and all have always been great. Just a bad experience tonight. Rude is never a good attitude for any any customer much less a long time consistent one
google avatar

Yelp
Beer was excellent. Service - excellent. Loved the porter. But the sweet potato fries - wow, insane. Fish sandy was delish. But those s-p fries....so so good. Will be back, soon.

Jenny M.

Yelp
Quick service with indoor and outdoor seating. POG cider and a Mexican lager. Got the spicy bacon burger and bbq bacon burger.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
What a great find. Roomy tap room and when the sun is out, a great spot to sit outside and enjoy the pond. The Kolsch is a good choice.
google avatar

Steve R.

Yelp
Great food and beer place with a very helpful and friendly staff. Will definitely recommend to others.

Jocelyn S.

Yelp
Great burgers, beers and service!! We enjoy ancestry every time we visit!!!!!! My husband always gets the wings :)
google avatar

Isai T.

Yelp
Good is fantastic! The juiciness of the food was fenomenal. If you are craving for something yummy, Ancestry is the place to be. Plus you get a custom beer while you wait. The place is super clean and organized. Would def come back to eat here with the gang!.
google avatar

Dawn O.

Yelp
Food is really tasty! Great choices. Definitely try the Sweet Potato fries! Always have had good service, pretty busy each time we've eaten there, but worth the wait! It is a converted warehouse so its noisy and in the winter it can be chilly.
google avatar

E F.

Yelp
We usually come hear for last minute get together with friends. Great staff and delicious food. Inside and outside dining. Always a hit!
google avatar

Brian F.

Yelp
I tried six of their beers in a flight and I'd say 5 were way above average. We had a large party but they served us with friendly ease. I would give five stars but my burger was just average. I definitely recommend Ancestry for the beer and the vibe.
google avatar

Cynthia E.

Yelp
Went here for the first time a few days ago after winning a gift certificate at work months ago. Can't believe it took us that long, because it was delicious. We ordered the Ancestry burger and the What Came First chicken sandwich. My husband got Cajun fries and I got the garlic Parmesan. Everything had fantastic flavor and was unique. Nice big windows and nice lighting inside, good service.
google avatar

Abe V.

Yelp
Solid food and beer! HS aged daughter very impressed w the mint chocolate chip ice cream sandwich for dessert. We had the Mahi Mahi sandwich (grilled) and the Philly steak sandwich that were both top notch. Lots of cool beers (I liked the Tripel the best). Overall a great dinner experience.
google avatar

Molly A.

Yelp
Really enjoyed my food here. Always appreciate when I can order off the kids menu if I'm just not that hungry (was with hubby and kiddo and they were both really hungry). Had the kids fish and chips sub sweet potato fries, added a side salad, and a draft root beer. Didn't personally love the root beer, just as a difference in taste preferences I guess, but food was excellent. Fish was fried perfect, and amount of food was just right for me. Will def be back! Service very friendly and quick.
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
Very disappointed. Showed up at 801pm. Places closes at 9pm. We were told immediately that theyre about to close and if we are eating we neee order right away. This is an hour before close on a Saturday night?! Food came fast and was on table by 815pm. But as we were getting our food they were putting chairs on all the tables next to us and claiming last call?!? Can't imagine the owner would be happy about this. Very uncomfortable and lost us spending a lot of money on apps and beers.

lance g.

Yelp
Fantastic beers and staff. Stopped in after a day of hiking and we each did a flight! Very good beers with a fun atmosphere
google avatar

Mary V.

Yelp
I will preface this by saying I was freezing the entire time I was here, so I think that negatively impacted my experience. This was mostly my fault since I didn't have a jacket, but the heaters outside really weren't doing much to help me out. The beer was great! I didn't try any food. Customer service was kind of bizarre, the guy who seated me didn't really say anything and I was confused by him.
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
Good food, great beer and excellent service. I would like a couple more food options but this place is a solid 4+ stars. Can't wait to come back and try more beer options.
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
Delicious delicious delicious- any questions? Great Tualatin brewpub. Casual atmosphere perfect for a date or family dinner.
google avatar

Robin F.

Yelp
Great food and excellent service!! There was literally zero wait time to get a seat. Plus there was sitting outside as well. Good selection of beers and cider

Brittany B.

Yelp
Great food. Had the cordon blue sandwich that was really good. Negative was the service wasn't that great. Wasn't busy and had to go find help. Will try again.
google avatar

Amy W.

Yelp
I love their food and beer! My fave is the Piney IPA. You can bring bottles of it home too. Service can be slow at times but they are so accommodating when you get their attention. It's a chill ambiance with a beautiful view of the wetlands. My favorite is their wings! Their buffalo brown sugar sauce is on point!
google avatar

Vick G.

Yelp
Fish and chips were super tasty and a few great brews! Smaller environment and cozy. Nonetheless a great place to head with family, friends, peers etc. we've tried the park fries, fish and chips, beers, and ciders and have enjoyed it all.
google avatar

Karl M.

Yelp
Amazing food and atmosphere! Service was on point and the burger was just awesome...don't know how else to put it. Definitely going to be a new spot for me!
google avatar

Laura K.

Yelp
This place is as good as ever! This time I tried the WHICH CAME FIRST SANDWICH and oh man! This sandwich is SO TENDER. The chicken is cooked perfectly each time I've had it. The brown sugar Buffalo marinade has just a little "zippy" spice to it. The employees are nice and always helpful.
