It's been a while since I've been surprised by a restaurant, especially in the OC. For reference, my last big surprise was probably going to Hanuman in Costa Mesa, and that was early 2020 when they first opened. So you can probably tell I will have praise for this establishment in my review, and I 100% recommend checking this place out.
To start, the name PUBlic Legacy is deceiving. With an emphasis on the pub portion you're immediately lead to imagery of a typical pub with a focus on beer, bar foods, casual atmosphere, etc. That is the exact opposite of what this place is. Honestly, and I don't think I've ever had this vibe from an OC restaurant, this place feels like it's straight from a major city like LA, Chicago, or NYC. I was beyond surprised, and I'm ecstatic that something of that caliber would be added to the OC as I feel the OC lacks good bars. The atmosphere is modern, space feels larger than it probably is, and the asthetics are beautifully designed.
For food, there wasn't a single miss for our groups orders. The menu is reasonably priced and the portions are huge. Appetizers are the size of entrees for an individual person, so keep that in mind when ordering. From the appetizers we ordered the muscles, tomato addiction, and play on poke. Our favorite was the tomato addiction. I love tomatos and the way its prepared with the melted Brie and sourdough bread are perfection. The play on poke is also amazing. There is no tuna and it's all fermented tomato with poke sauce, and it's crazy how close the flavor is to actual poke.
For entrees they were all delicious, but I was blown away by the pork chop I ordered. I normally don't order pork chop because let's be real - restaurants mess it up all the time by over cooking it and making it drier than the Saharah desert. Though I've eaten alot around the world and it's not the best I've had worldwide, this is easily one of the best pork chops I've had in the SoCal area. Don't skip it and actually try it out. I only ordered it because I was so impressed by the appetizers, so if it's not even on your items of consideration, do yourself a favor and take the leap.
Drinks here are solid, and this is probably where the improvements can be made. They have a great local craft beer selection, but the focus imo is on cocktails and spirits. All cocktails are wonderful and definitely way above average, but if you're really into cocktails like I am where you travel the world for bars and restaurants you know when a place is good good, and this place can improve on their cocktails. I always judge a place by a negroni and I would give it a 7/10 here for reference if anyone reading does the same. The penicillin I ordered was great but immediately I knew it didn't have an Islay float so I had to send it back to be redone, but once fixed it was wonderful. Just know you're in for a good time with the cocktails, and as the bartenders serve more and become more experienced I'm sure it will improve.
Now to the spirits. If you're not into spirits skip this paragraph, but if you do lemme tell you.. this place has a surprisingly expansive library at hand. The scotch portion is lacking but I was beyond impressed with their bourbon selection. There are some stuff on here that is a STEAL with how hard it is to find a bottle. I'm not going to point out any, if you know you know, but do ask for and look at their spirits menu because lemme tell you, I was impressed. This place easily has one of the most impressive bourbon libraries in all of the OC, and you can take it from someone who always looks. If you're not ordering a dram or two of bourbon here you are sorely missing out. I spoke with our server and he mentioned the owner has some bottles from his private collection available, and I will say based off his selection I 100% believe he does.
Service was impeccable. Our server was Jonathan and for the local OC scene I will dare say he was one of the best single servers I've had the pleasure of meeting in the area. I've dined at alot of high end restaurants around the world, and I was truly impressed with the level of attention and knowledge Jonathan provided, as well as his extensive detail on his recommendations.
I think my praise is getting a bit long winded, but it's been a while since I've been this impressed by a new restaurant. If you can't tell, you 100% need to go this place whether if it's on your maybe list or if you've never even heard of it. Written by someone who was skeptical of going, put this place on the very top of your must try list.
