"Rockford, Illinois, is a small city 90 miles west of Chicago, and it’s actually a pretty happening place. By far the best reason to go is to visit the Anderson Japanese Gardens. It began in the late 1970s in a local businessman’s backyard when he brought in the master craftsman and designer Hoichi Kurisu to create a Japanese garden. Today, the garden is open to the public and managed by a nonprofit, and it’s incredibly well-maintained and extraordinarily beautiful. If you want to see even more gardens, there are also the Klehm Arboretum and Botanic Garden and the Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens. If it’s autumn, after visiting the gardens you could check out some nearby orchards, like Edwards Apple Orchard West. Alternatively, you could explore Rock Cut State Park or kayak on the Rock River. The garden alone is worth the trip, but with all the other options in Rockford, it’s a great day trip from the city." - MATADOR_NETWORK

It was my first time visiting the gardens. This was a warm fall day. The colors were vibrant and beautiful. Water features, fountains, waterfalls. A very quiet place, even though there were lots of visitors. Take the time to sit on the benches throughout the gardens and enjoy the vibe. Finish at the Restaurant, Fresco. Lunch was delicious.

Anderson Japanese Garden is breathtakingly beautiful, especially during fall. The vibrant foliage, serene landscapes, and tranquil water features create a stunning oasis. Impeccable maintenance, lovely walking paths, and picturesque scenery make every step a delight. The fall colors are truly mesmerizing. A must-visit for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts. Don't miss the teahouse and serene seating areas. Anderson Japanese Garden has earned its reputation as one of the best Japanese gardens outside Japan. Truly unforgettable.

Google
Love this place! We have been coming here for many years and always find it a delight to visit. The gardens are so beautifully planned and very well maintained. The restaurant has delicious food, Friendly and professional staff. The gift shop is fun to browse. Our last visit we met out of town people. Almost every place in the garden is an amazing backdrop for pictures and stunning on its own.

Google
Absolutely wonderful. We made a special trip from Chicago to see these gardens and it was absolutely worth it. The gardens are so thoughtfully designed, you can feel the years of love and care. Magical paths through different parts with wonderful views at every turn. The shop has lots of lovely, unique items and the whole experience was just a pleasure. We got there at 10 and it was nice and quiet,. started getting really busy around 12 noon.

Google
Anderson Japanese Gardens was a fabulous experience. It's huge, and it was gorgeous. The light in the morning and calm water made for lovely photos. There is so much to see - waterfalls, foliage, bridges, etc. - that there is not a bad time to visit.

Theresa Schaefer

Google
I can see why others raved about this place in the comments. There are so many different paths to take and you can spend a lot of time exploring or take the main paths. We took the side paths to see all of the buildings, waterfalls, bridges, ponds, and streams. The botanics are beautiful and with all of the places to sit and contemplate with the sound of water, it's very relaxing. I will definitely come back next time I'm in town, as I'm sure we missed something:)

Google
My husband and I swung in on our road trip to visit and stretch our legs. It was more amazing than we imagined! The gardens were so beautiful. We also loved how fearless the ducks and Koi were they swam along side of us as we walked along. Definitely recommended.

Yaryna Shevchuk

Google
Beautiful garden and our family enjoyed the time we spent there. The restaurant only serves breakfast and lunch and closes at 3 pm. Next time we'll make sure to arrive faster so we can have lunch there.

PJ S.

Yelp
Amazing and expansive Japanese garden with excellent educational value as well. So peaceful and beautiful.

Rebecca C.

Yelp
Stopped here on our roadtrip back to Delaware from Minnesota. The garden is very green with various Japanese decor. There are some water falls and ponds with Koi. There were some beautiful flowers blooming! A very nice garden to take a stroll through. It's rather shaded with various trees to make it rather enjoyable to walk through in the summer as this is when I visited!

Nick P.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem out in the suburbs. Located in Rockford which is quite a drive from the Chicago area. Tickets for an adult are $11-13. I only came here once just because of the distance but I wouldn't mind coming back in the summer. They have alluring, breathtaking waterfalls here and koi in the ponds. Just a reminder, this place is for relaxing and being stress free. They do have a restaurant but I didn't eat there. On their online menu, I noticed it's not very Japanese oriented. Parking is sufficient, it doesn't really get busy here.

Shannon L.

Yelp
We went for the first time this past Monday. Beautiful grounds, reasonable admission price, lots of fish to feed, I would suggest checking it out if you are within an hour like us. There was a restaurant on site but we did not try it, and parking is free, but kind of a small lot.

Steve A.

Yelp
How incredible there's an amazing thing like this in Rockford, so don't let people tell you this city is all bad. If you like gardens and Japanese culture, this is great for you, and anyone else. The Anderson Japanese Gardens is located by Sinnissippi Park. For those not getting enough of the outdoors, come here for a visit after. You can also get lunch at the cafe, and after all the walking you may need something to eat to be honest. An important thing one should know is there's a cost of admission. It's $13 for adults, which sucks but it helps support the gardens. The other thing to know is it closes sometime in October until March. A lot to see here. The entrance is through the visitors center gift shop. First thing is the Garden Of Remembrance, which surrounds a large pond filed with large koi fish. There's a Conversation Area on the west side for meditation and reflection. Cross the bridges to get to the other areas. The Guest House is apparently the centerpiece of the gardens. It's used for gatherings, meetings, and anything. The Tea House also is used by guests, for tea. Another large pond is on the north side. It's noted for a large weeping willow. Finally, there's a couple of waterfalls that are cool. There's one on the east side and one on the west side. Also look for some authentic Japanese art. There's lots of carvings and statues. Great place to get outside and look around. It's worth it for sure. There's also plenty to get in the gift shop including teas and whatever.

Gina V.

Yelp
Yes 5 thumbs up if you are a Japanese oficionado like yours truly this is a place for you to come and enjoy the garden. They do have an Italian restaurant the food is good and affordable. They also have a little store before you enter to do you walk which I did go nuts shopping for tea I found hemp tea with cbd and what a way to relax and to take pain away from Your ailments. I really had a wonderful time walking around and enjoying the garden. I wanted to buy guide but it was already take. For 3 dollars More it would had been worth it. Next time I will go alone since no one in my family loves to walk Is a long ride to get here for literally just walk a little and let's go Beautiful place serene and full of beauty I will return soon

Dan M.

Yelp
An authentic Japanese garden that instills calm, contemplation and meditation over 12 acres of carefully designed landscape. Grass, bushes, trees and the flowing water over waterfalls and into ponds create a spectacular space of stop-in-your-tracks beauty. Excellent cafe for food and drink at fair prices and hospitable service. 90 minutes from Chicago.

Rene B.

Yelp
Beautiful, well kept gardens! The docents throughout the grounds help add to the experience with useful, interesting information. Definitely worth visiting.

Isabelle L.

Yelp
Beautifully designed and well maintained this Japanese garden is the perfect place to relax and unwind as you walk through the different paths. Water, fishes, traditional Japanese structures and greeneries are key features. A must do when in Rockford.

Melissa J.

Yelp
My sister has been coming here regularly for years, so after seeing lots of pictures and hearing about it we finally planned a day for a meet up at the garden. Overall it took us about 1.5 hours to explore the garden at a relatively relaxing pace. I brought my 18 month old with and he was totally fascinated and just loved the koi ponds and waterfalls. There were lots of other kids as well, I think it's a pretty neat place for kids to explore. That being said, the garden is not super stroller friendly because there are lots of little pathways and stairs where you can't get a stroller. I brought a backpack carrier but he was happy walking most of the way and being carried where there are some tricky bits. The gardens are beautiful and exceptionally well kept. We were there on a weekday and there was plenty of parking. No pets or food/drink other than water are allowed in the garden.

Mitch J.

Yelp
Great spot! We have a family membership and love taking family trips here. It's peaceful, has wonderful scenery, and it's good exercise. The gardens are well taken care of and you can tell they knew what they were doing when they designed and created it. Everything has its place and you are transported to almost another world for a while. They host different events here throughout the year and even have a restaurant, too, if you're hungry.

Sarah R.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to go when I need some calm and nature. I like to walk the perimeter and then find a little place to sit and read or just enjoy the beauty of the gardens. It is one of the top rated Japanese gardens in the entire country, and we are so lucky to have it here in Illinois. I have been a member for three years now and I will continue my membership as long as we are here-- a few visits and it pays for itself. Plus, they offer really cool events during the year such as the summer concerts, the summer Japanese festival, and the lights in the winter. Pro tip: buy the bags of fish food for $1 if you have kids or are a big kid yourself. Totally worth it to feed the fish, birds, and turtles alike. My nieces LOVE to plop the fish food into the waiting mouths of the koi, and watching them squeal with delight is half of the fun!

Lisa F.

Yelp
I took a day off and spent the day at Anderson Japanese Gardens as well as another attraction, Nicholas Conservatory. I would also recommend Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Gardens in Rockford.

Marc C.

Yelp
Visiting the Japanese garden on a foggy and cloudy July morning was an unforgettable experience. Despite the early hour, the garden was alive with beauty and tranquility. From the moment I stepped inside, I felt the peace and serenity that only a well-crafted garden can offer. The birds were singing their morning songs, and the traffic from the nearby highways was virtually nonexistent, adding to the overall calm and serenity. I have visited this garden before, but never so early in the morning. This visit, in particular, felt special and unique. The garden was exceptionally well maintained, and every corner was a work of art. The carefully pruned trees, the lush greenery, and the intricate water features all contributed to the overall ambiance of the garden. As I walked through the pathways, I felt as though I was transported to a different world, a world free from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I found myself stopping frequently to admire the breathtaking scenery and to take in the peace and tranquility. It was truly a haven of relaxation, and I felt all my stress and worries melting away. The experience was further enhanced by the fact that I was able to share it with my loved one. In conclusion, the Japanese garden was a wonderful experience, one that left me feeling renewed and refreshed. It is an excellent place to escape from the world and immerse oneself in a tranquil and serene environment. If you are looking for a peaceful escape from the daily grind, I highly recommend this garden.

Yelp
We visited Anderson Japanese gardens to catch up with friends in October. We had a relaxing time taking in nature and the Zen like atmosphere. We were hoping to do some leaf peeping this visit, but climate change delayed the fall colors this season. Regardless, the garden is beautiful and an ideal spot for pictures. The grounds have several small waterfalls, a tea house and a pond home to a predominant number of large koi. The koi are well fed round the clock by visitors due to the constant supply of fish food available for purchase at the entrance. They have a cute little gift shop if you're seeking a themed souvenir. There is also a café/dining area open for lunch but check their hours. The gardens have a separate building where you can rent out the space for weddings and special occasions. It's equipped with big windows, so you get an excellent view of the gardens. If you're in the market for a wedding venue, this place is a unique option. Lastly, their entry fee is $11.00 per person as of October 2021. The ample parking on the grounds is free. All in all, Anderson Japanese gardens is a nice stop for leisure when in Rockford.

Gerry T.

Yelp
I've been here thrice now? And it's always been rainy. But that's not Anderson's fault...right. I have to tip my hat to the folks who run this place because last time I checked, Rockford isn't really known for the keepers of Japanese culture. But this place attracts many for lunch in the cafe (don't know if they serve Japanese food), the little book store and of course, the garden - which is a pretty good size. There is a variation in terrain, there's a nice pond in the middle of the garden, areas for reflection, koi throughout, Japanese influence in the architecture of course, as well as the trees/plants, gravel (it's raked for that total zen feeling). Try to spread out because you can, it's a nice size so you don't have to worry too much. There's plenty of parking and the entrance fee is pretty inexpensive. Finally, there's a Japanese restaurant called JMK Nippon in Rockford and they also do an exceptional job. So you can go there for a meal afterwards, to make your cultural immersion complete.

Sarah W.

Yelp
I went here on a day trip to meet my sister for a little lunch daytime outing and it was perfect. The entry fee is $12 to wander the gardens. Everything is beautifully done in the garden and there are a lot of garden staff and volunteer docents around as well. We walked all through the gardens and sat and talked. The garden's total area is small and walking around the whole thing can be accomplished in one to two hours. I think we walked for an hour and a half including time to sit down and chat. We could have been slower and savored it a bit more. But we were hungry so we went to the Fresca Cafe right there at the garden. We were able to eat outside and it was great. There were umbrellas to shied you from the sun. I ordered blackened salmon tacos and my sister got the chicken salad (grilled chicken over salad). It was exceptionally delicious. It's a perfect little day trip or extended lunch outing or excellent meeting spot. Highly recommend!!

Amanda W.

Yelp
My wife brought me here for a surprise on my birthday. We explored the gardens and gift shop, and although we thought about dinner, we decided to go somewhere else. The gardens are very beautiful- so beautiful that we almost chose this location for our wedding. We will be back to try the food! Such a beautiful place for a nice relaxing day together!

Johnna L.

Yelp
The garden are beautiful however my handicapped mother went we were told they had wheelchair but they had none when we arrived, you may want to make sure you have your own to take the trip as they apparently do not have many, and. You can't reserve them.

Shadow R.

Yelp
It's cool for what it is, a decent venue for marriage pics. But it's not terribly impressive. Just my opinion. If you like flowers check it out. If you bring your kids. Keep them on a leash, I'm pretty sure the flowers aren't meant to be picked...lol

Candice H.

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful! Perfect place for a date or just a nice stroll outside. Well come here again. Worth the two hour drive :)

Jessica L.

Yelp
Beautiful gardens. I loved feeding the koi, happy they offer this at a cheap price. Great photo ops. I was there on a weekday and the traffic was very low. I imagine it's pretty busy on weekends.

Vikrant G.

Yelp
Drove an hour and a half and it was definitely worth a visit! The visitor's center is very nice, with authentic Japanese snacks, drinks and merchandise available for purchase. Unfortunately the cafe had already closed when I got there, so I missed out on that. The garden area is not that big, but its very well maintained and beautiful to walk through. Definitely make sure to grab some fish and duck food from the front before entering to feed them at the ponds! The environment here is very peaceful, the greenery and architecture is beautiful!

Adam J.

Yelp
These gardens were beautiful! Well maintained grounds that offered tons of fantastic photo opportunities. It's a great location for weddings, being that they're was one being set up while we were there and I myself officiated a wedding there in June.

Aisha S.

Yelp
for many years I was only able to spend one day a year with my mom. Every summer we drove up from Warrenville and walked through the garden. it was the best. i miss doing that.

Janet T.

Yelp
The garden is beautiful and very well kept. We were there for approximately 2 1/2 hours. The only thing I would say is that it would be nice if there were a couple of volunteers walking around in case you had a question or needed help.

Steve T.

Yelp
Great Restaurant! Wonderful atmosphere food is excellent and pricing is good. Menu is what I would call traditional.

Lily O.

Yelp
Unique and lovely environment in which to stroll, relax and meditate. It is so beautifully designed! Also, the restaurant was really good - enjoyed the delicious food and lovely service with a beautiful view.

John B.

Yelp
Excellent place to go for a great meal and to just relax walking around some beautiful Japanese gardens.

Victoria B.

Yelp
This is a beautiful Japanese garden in Rockford. There's free parking and your can leisurely stroll at your own pace. This was my first time here and I really enjoyed it. You can feed the koi fish they house there. Don't get intimidated, but these koi fish are HUGE (length of my whole arm) and also the array many different colors too! I even saw a few that looked like they had lipstick on. Although the garden isn't very stroller friendly or wheelchair due to the narrow paths and rocky terrain. There is many traditional Japanese architecture buildings and serene shaded sitting areas.Along with several waterfalls and streams which are tranquil. The grounds are well kept and clean. There is a gift shop with a cafe which is nice.

Michael T.

Yelp
I have been to the Anderson Japanese Gardens more than six times over the past ten years or so, and it seems to get better and better with every visit. The most recent visit was in October, so it was a real treat to see the fall foliage (see attached pictures). It costs about $11 per person ... well worth the price. Most people will make it through the gardens in about 40 minutes, but I suggest you take some time and relax there. Just sit in relax along the path; they have ample places to just sit. Their little restaurant is quite good. And you should always purchase at least one bag of fish food (only $1) at the entrance. You will want to take some time to feed the carp! The pond by the Strolling Garden is a great spot to feed the fish, as less people are usually there.

Genevieve A.

Yelp
ridiculous booking appointment with their Fresco. I booked and when I came it they said their resto is closed. I drove 2 hours going there and all yhe consequence is awful. Well sorry is not enough.

Karl F.

Yelp
Beautiful place to spend an afternoon, touring through these outdoor gardens. Also, I think they have a donation day each week on Thursday, so you can enter for free and make a donation. This place is a pretty unique find in Rockford.

Diana M.

Yelp
Beautiful. Peaceful. They have a section that is wheelchair accessible! Great place and you can feed the ducks/fish :)

Dolores A.

Yelp
Wonderful peaceful location to just stroll and enjoy a beautiful day. Watching the stream is so relaxing. Great place to take out of town visitors.

Jon A.

Yelp
The crown jewel of or City. If you are from Rockford or just Visiting Anderson Japanese gardens is a must see. There are loads of events to experience, one of them Hass to be up your alley.

Peter R.

Yelp
If you like serenity through nature this is the place to go. This garden is man manipulated in a good way to promote relaxation and inner peace. This is also a good place to go if you enjoy photography or videography as there are so many beautiful scenery.

Asad R.

Yelp
Wow this place is beautiful! We went a few weeks ago on 10/28 and they had such beautiful fall colors everywhere I was almost breathless. They also ha d a great Halloween event going on with candy stations (and bird handlers!) sprinkled throughout the various routes. There are three main areas here with two ponds and one large waterfall. Whatever you do, don't miss the waterfall (see the attached picture, it's amazing). I would say you could complete this in 1-2 hours depending on your pace. We walked slowly and took a ton of pictures so it was more around the 2 hour end for us. For less than $10, this is my favorite experience in all of Rockford and one of my favorites in Illinois!

Kristen C.

Yelp
Really neat space...well maintained...helpful staff...nice limited capacity in play. The koi ponds were fantastic...dont forget your fish and duck food up front!

Kyle R.

Yelp
Amazing wedding venue!!!! All the staff we worked with were fantastic! They answered questions promptly and made sure all the details were perfect! The only downside is you will have to work with Francesco's for catering and they are the WORST!

Naomi S.

Yelp
We picked the most perfect fall day to check out Anderson Japanese Gardens. It was a little crowded, but not so crowded that one couldn't get some beautiful photos without anyone in them. The colors are amazing, the layout is beautiful and thought-provoking. Many small bridges and waterfalls add to the sensory experience. It's a little too far for me to visit as much as I'd like, but I will absolutely be back at different times of year to see the small seasonal changes to this beautifully curated natural tapestry.

Jess N.

Yelp
What an awesome place to spend a few hours in Rockford. We ventured to Rockford to check out this garden, and we were not disappointed. We had some recent storms and rains that impacted parts of the gardens, but they were running business as normal for patrons anyway. The ponds and waterways were full and flowing nicely. The river that runs through was very nice and soothing to experience. I love the waterfall! So darn cool! They have decorated the grounds with some really cool walkways, bridges and art features. The koi in the pools are so fun to watch and you can feed them. There were a couple of places that were off limits to us, but I felt as though we were able to have a space to ourselves as there wasn't a lot of patron traffic the afternoon we were there. The teahouse is so nice. There was a man giving a tour and he was explaining the teahouse when we walked up. He was very informational on the teahouse and the japanese tea experience. If you want a cool place to hang out and be in nature, this is an affordable place to do so. It's also a great place to take photos. The ever changing colors of nature are abundant here. I'm sure you would experience a completely different place each time you visited. I'm sure to go back myself.

Nancy H.

Yelp
The restaurant and the garden (and the gift shop!) were so gracious and approachable. It was such a pleasure to be there--lunch before the garden. As an out of town visitor, this locale gave me a great first impression of Rockford in general.

Adam K.

Yelp
Rockford conjures up many things, but not a beautiful Japanese garden. My wife found this jewel and we visited on a wonderful fall day. The level of craftsmanship of all buildings, sculptures and walkways are well done. The many areas within the garden are unique and bring solace and beauty and reach a contemplative level where you want to sit and take it in. Overall a great place to visit.

Emily R.

Yelp
Anderson Japanese Gardens is a very beautiful and serene destination. Whenever I visit botanical gardens, the Japanese Gardens is my favorite part. Having a entire place dedicated to the beauty of this design is majestic. They have two beautiful ponds: one surrounded by a garden and one dedicated for reflection and meditation. Walking around the pond surrounded by the garden was very peaceful. I was even able to sit in some shade and just take in all the beauty. They also have a tea house and a guest house which display tradition Japanese décor. Although they have clear cut signs warning you about entering those establishments. My favorite part of the entire thing was the waterfall. It was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Certainly it was one of the most beautiful things I have seen in the Midwest. If you are interested in meditation or having a relaxing day, I highly suggest you come here. Tip: The garden is very small. If you are just going there to walk and look at things you can make it through the entire thing in an hour, so if you drive far and want more to do look for some of the other fun things to do in Rockford. You could check out there conservatory to see other beautiful things.

Jessica M.

Yelp
Loved visiting the Anderson Japanese Gardens. We took a day trip here from Chicago for my birthday. We went on a Tuesday in July and we only saw probably about 10 other people while we were there. It was like having the garden to ourselves. The garden is beautiful, and brought me back to my 2018 Japan trip. It is extremely peaceful with ponds and waterfalls throughout. Very authentic with a lot of structures that make you feel like you are right in Japan. We also met a lovely man Frank who worked there and shared all his knowledge about the history of the gardens and some pop culture as well. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a nice get away!

Brooke H.

Yelp
Anderson Japanese Gardens has been my dream wedding location my whole life and they lived up to my high expectations!! From their professionalism to the beautiful gardens, literally nothing could have been more perfect for me and my husband. They have an awesome team that goes above and beyond to make your day easy for you. I would recommend AJG to literally anyone - they are amazing!

Melissa R.

Yelp
A beautiful and peaceful garden! It's not huge... maybe about 2-3 hours worth of walking at a slow tranquil pace while stopping to relax for a few minutes and/or take some pics. This is not the place to bring kids to run around or for adults to have loud boisterous conversations. I'm used to the hustle and bustle of Chicago so entering this garden was a completely different world for me. A lovely place to run away to even if only for an hour or two.

Nathan S.

Yelp
I came to the garden in fall, it was beautiful. The leaves were changing and the colors where amazing. This is a great place to go for a nice romantic walk, or to practice your photography skills, or to just get away and clear your head. I will have to check out the restaurant next time and give an update to this review. From walking past it though, it looked real nice and has a great view.

Holiday P.

Yelp
Very beautiful and well kept japanese garden and very peaceful too with not much people. They have lots of koi fishes which is great for kids. I usually go to chicago botanic because thats the closest to me. Highly recommend to come here at once. Only thing that sucks is thats its much smaller than chicago botanic and the 3 hr drive from chicago.
