The Best Breakfast Restaurants in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Andy’s Coffee Shop isn’t exactly a hidden gem given its location on Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, but it’s still off the usual diner maps thanks to its tiny, mid-block storefront. The breakfast basics are best here, so opt for the omelets, crispy bacon and hash browns, and pancakes — which can be ordered individually, so there’s no need to share with the table. Best of all, Andy’s Coffee Shop is free from those pesky lines found at hip brunch places in town." - Eater Staff

A long lasting place, portion is decent, looks like a neighborhood community, feels like a scene in TV or film, saw many families and friends came together.

Google
A decent Mexican themed diner in Pasadena. I would say that Russell’s is my favorite diner in Pasadena followed by Shakers but Andy’s is a nice option if you are in the area. They have a much smaller menu compared to some of the other competitors and inside is quite small as well. They don’t have outdoor seating so everything will be indoors and if it’s crowded be prepared to wait. We had to wait about 10 minutes for our table for two to be ready for our Saturday brunch. They don’t have a dedicated parking lot however street parking is fairly easy to find in this part of town. Pricing is fair and our server was pretty nice although took quite some time for the drink refills and to check in on us. As mentioned this is more of a Mexican themed diner. All diners in Los Angeles are one of four to me. The traditional retro LA diner, the country diner, the Asian diner, and the Mexican diner. This being Mexican due to the amount of Mexican dishes on the menu, clientele, and staff. As someone from San Diego I don’t mean this is a negative thing, actually something that I really like and prefer even though I myself am not Hispanic. For my order I chose the Huevos à la Mexicana and did enjoy it although I felt that there was too much liquid, everything was a bit too wet, but still had some nice flavors. Overall, I would recommend if you are in the area and I would definitely give it another try again in the future.

Google
A solid spot for breakfast. They have a very extensive menu that is served all day, along with lunch options after 11am. Decent portions and fair prices. The food was pretty good and well presented. I do not know how the sausage was made and it is probably better if it stays that way but it was super tasty and juicy.

Google
Great everything but especially good corned beef hash.

Google
Cool little diner with an older vibe and great service. Biscuits and gravy were delicious!

Google
This place is a classic. The corn beef hash and eggs were delicious and a great portion. The weather is rancheros with rice and beans were delicious and a huge portion a little spicy delicious. The location is clean. The staff is super friendly pictures on the wall. I really really neat 10 out of 10 we’re totally recommend. Just remember they’re closed on Tuesdays.

Google
Food was hot and everything tasted great. AMAZING hashbrowns! Pancakes were perfect. Nothing out of the ordinary but were on point. Nice old vibe diner setting. But overall, very nice. I'm definitely coming back.

Google
Great place to grab a breakfast. Prices are pretty high but the food is good and service was decent.

Yelp
Good coffee shop with quality food, good service and generous portions. Mexican food is especially good. My father in law always gets the burrito, while I rely on my standard machaca and eggs. Tortillas taste like they are home made and refried beans are tasty. Not open on Tuesdays, otherwise we would frequent this restaurant more often.

Yelp
I got their sausage omelet & hashbrown to go box from here and it was not the greatest. I ate about 1/3 of it before taking it home and giving it to my brother, who "remade" everything on a frying pan to his taste later on. And even then he said just by looking at it that it was going to be mid. Hashbrowns were slightly burnt and the omelet was saltier than what I would have liked. Also the sausage had random hard bits in it, definitely a negative texture ASMR.

Yelp
I really love this place for breakfast!! It takes me back to the days when you can get an amazing breakfast and feel like you and in an old school diner. The service is awesome and the food is delicious!! 10/10 I really love how cozy and family like it feels in here

Yelp
Great breakfast spot with affordable prices and great food. Definitely worth checking out.

Yelp
We went for breakfast on a Sunday morning. Not too crowded and music is lightly playing on background. Great service as usual! Their salsa sauce is always good as I remember.

Yelp
We wanted a place to eat breakfast on Sunday morning before attending a comic-con at the Pasadena Convention Center. My friend suggested Andy's because of its proximity to the venue. We parked on the street around the corner for free. I had read the previous reviews and learned that the food was traditional American breakfast fare, but that the menu also included a page for Mexican dishes. I ordered the corned beef hash plate with sourdough toast and coffee. It was a good-sized plate and the food was excellent. My friend ordered the chilaquiles with shredded beef. He too enjoyed his food. Service was good and attentive. Someone came by frequently with the pot of coffee. You pay at the register. I used my Apple wallet I will qualify information from a previous review: to get to the restroom, you walk through the kitchen. You walk to the back of the store, but you don't walk through the areas where they cook the food. There's only one unisex restroom, mysteriously equipped with four different toilet plungers. No, you cannot enter or exit through the back. You must enter through the front on Colorado Blvd.

Yelp
You know this is a great little greasy spoon type diner in town that's perfect for a quick breakfast. Easy to park. Food is exactly what you'd expect for breakfast. Your coffee gets refilled constantly. No frills. Nothing fancy.

Yelp
Although I've lived near Andy's practically my whole life, I only recently read about it somewhere (Eater?). I've surely driven past it thousands of times but finally tried it a few times and was charmed by its old-school coffee shop vibe and tasty food. Located on old Route 66 (Colorado Blvd) near Pasadena City College (PCC), Andy's has booth, table and counter seating. Open only for breakfast and lunch, it has a menu full of breakfast classics plus some Mexican dishes. The times I've visited there is a friendly young woman who seems to be the head server, greeter and cashier. She speaks English and Spanish. There was another male server who spoke less English. The walls are adorned with old photos, and they still have a display of those classic little boxes of cereals. I've ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs (with hash browns and toast), machaca (with rice, beans and tortillas) and huevos a la Mexicana (a layered dish with crispy tortillas, eggs, rice, beans, onions, tomatoes, serrano chiles, cheese and avocado). Every dish was pretty great; I'd order them all again, but there are lots of others dishes I'd like to try. Note you must walk through the kitchen to access the restroom. I did notice cans of corned beef hash while passing through. Good choice for an unassuming, non-bougie breakfast or lunch.

Yelp
We got the steak and eggs which came with sour dough toast and hash browns. The steak was whatever, but I really liked how they toasted the hash browns and bread. Traditional diner vibes which is hard to find today. Their decor is filled with old newspapers involving the restaurant which is cool. Food came out a little slow. There's parking in the back and on the street.

Yelp
Very cute old school diner! Was busy when we got there because you can make reservations! Very nice staff! The restroom is located where you can see the kitchen and it is so clean and the workers are so focused and kind! The food is your typical diner type food-with hit of Mexican food-their beans are excellent! Their salsa is great!

Yelp
Great little diner to have breakfast. A small mom and pops shop, with old-school seating, and tables. Nothing fancy, just simple eating, affordable prices, and friendly staff. We ordered Andy's Breakfast with Pancakes and French Toast. The food was good, we were checked on constantly and refilled with freshly brewed coffee. We stopped by on a Saturday morning and it was not busy. Street parking is available.
google avatar

Yelp
Old school vibe. A little cramped when waiting in line to be seated or to pay. Big fluffy pancakes. Nicely browned scrambled eggs. Crispy bacon. ROCK inside my side order of hash browns. Yes you read that right. Food was decent but dude this rock really messed things up.

Yelp
Thank you and farewell! After 30 years of good food, its time to find another diner. With prices being the way they are in Pasadena, its time to locate another place to call home. Thank you, Andy's!
google avatar

Yelp
Still consistently fantastic! The food, the ambiance, the services and pricing are outstanding! I will continue to patronize this establishment as long as their service remains consistent! Kudos to them!!

Yelp
I was waiting around since my car was getting washed a couple businesses down so we decided to stop by this place to get some breakfast. The place was very hole in the way but oh my was it busy! There were so many customers and many seemed like regulars. We ordered the Huevos a la Mexicana with a side of hash browns to split between 2 people and it was plenty of food! I really liked the dish (despite it looking a bit soupy lol). The flavors are there even so the presentation may be lacking. The dish does have some heat so if you want to make it less intense, I would say no jalapeños. It seemed like a popular dish since I saw 2 other tables order it.

Yelp
Took a walk one Sunday to this historical joint, I love me some corned beef hash, it hit the spot! Good food, good service; we will be back

Yelp
Don't eat at Andy's if you're a tourist. Plain coffee shop food and we were charged a ridiculous amount for a couple of small swaps. I think they knew we were tourists. Tried to dispute the charges but there seemed to be a language barrier. We're from Arizona.

Yelp
I love Andy's Coffee Shop! I grew up going with my grandma to the local Thrifty's Coffee Shop, and in the many years that followed, it seems there are fewer and fewer old-fashioned coffee shops left. You know what I mean: the local place with low turnover where the servers keep the coffee coming and the food is always simple yet delicious, especially the breakfast. Fear not! Andy's is keeping the dream alive. Andy's has a great menu with all of the usual American breakfast favorites. Of course, it's all delicious. If you want a traditional American breakfast (steak and eggs, omelets, pancakes, etc.) you won't be disappointed. If you want something a little different, however, I suggest the Mexican breakfast menu. Again, the usual favorites are there. I usually have the chilaquiles. Andy's has two varieties, red and green, and both are amazing. I highly recommend going for the added shredded beef. It's delicious marinated shredded beef, juicy and flavorful. Today, I dared to try something new. I ordered the Nopal Omelet. That's a cactus omelet for those of you who don't speak Spanish. If you've never tried nopales, I suggest you give it a shot. The texture is similar to Ortega chiles, and the flavor is mild. My omelet came with a side of beans and rice and my choice of toast. My wife and brother-in-law also enjoyed their meals. I was too busy loving my food to see what they ordered. Our server (I'm sorry, I didn't catch his name) was friendly, professional, and capable. My coffee stayed warm and full, and believe me, I was putting it away. Andy's is a family run business at a time where smaller family businesses have all but vanished. I hope you'll give them a chance. You'll love the food and service.

Yelp
Pancakes were thick and pretty dense, and even with butter on them, they were just kind of...meh. Didn't soak anything up, but also soaked EVERYTHING up--I'm not a syrup fiend like that, but I just couldn't get enough syrup on them to give them any flavor or moistness. Also ordered a Denver omelette with undercooked veggies put on top of the omelette instead of inside. Overall, a pretty meh meal...but I loved the small diner ambiance, and even if it was meh, it still tasted good (pretty standard diner fare), and I'd come back and just order something else.

Yelp
My Daughter and I were looking for a place to have Breakfast. We found Andy's Great Place For Breakfast, waiter and waitresses are kind.

Yelp
I moved to Pasadena (from the LAX area) in the fall of 2017, and have been looking for a "breakfast joint" - with no luck, until today. I brought my car to Pep Boys for new tires, and while waiting, looked for nearby restaurants, and saw "Andy's." "Ok," I said, and did a 3-minute walk to this delightful throwback to another time ... some tables around a u-shaped counter. I made for the counter, a cup of coffee was immediately offered, and my order was taken by a delight young lady with a cheery smile and a kindly way. I was busy with my phone, and my kindle, so a wee bit of time was perfect, and then, and then, and then, it arrived ... everything perfectly done, and hot, with endless coffee, of course. Eggs over easy, done just right ... has browns with the right amount of crisp, as well as the corned beef hash. When I said to the young lady, "Don't tell my wife!" she replied, with an index finger to her mouth, "Secrecy is our motto!" Will I be back? Absolutely. To explore more of the menu, but if the rest of the food is as well prepared as this course was, it'll all be good. Open from 7 AM - 2 PM. Perfect hours for a restaurant dedicated to this kind of great cooking.

Yelp
I used to come here, years ago with my mom. It was really good but today was so horrible. I walk in and the waiter just says take a seat anywhere. I ordered my coffee and it was horrible. It tastes like old coffee. I ordered my breakfast and a side salad. Salad never came and when the food got to my table, it was warm and almost cold. The waiter came by once and then disappeared. I had to look for my check. The restaurant itself looked the same like it's trying to be a diner but it has the wrong type of set up. I am so disappointed. I really love to support small businesses. Sadly I will not be returning.

Yelp
just down home cooking great service great people and good food. Although they have. lot celebrity pictures it's never clear if they at there lol :)

Yelp
This little coffee shop is a like a set from a classic movie, super cute. It can get really packed on weekends but that won't stop the servers in giving you a top notch service at all times. Now the food is another level! I've had their classic breakfast, bacon brekkie burrito and bacon omelett with veggies... this one last is a must! The refried beans I can't stop thinking about; taste homemade for sure. You definitely can't go wrong with anything on their menu, really. Pancakes are really good as well, almost cake like consistency. Great coffee. Parking on the back or street parking. Clean restroom.

Yelp
Classic Route 66 diner. Booths, single dining bar table, grill cook. Breakfast has lots of choices. Local news on the TV. Quiet. Food was exactly what we expected and wanted. Nothing fancy. Hot. Large portions. Server checked frequently if we needed coffee or more.

Yelp
One of the best breakfast spots in all of Pasadena old school. And food it good. The service is spot on and friendly and great.

Yelp
First time here around 10am , coffee was fresh and staff was nice. Breakfast was good, next time I'll get lunch. The refried beans were so good! I have to come back and try the split pea soup on a Thursday.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast while in town on vacation. I got the Napoles omelette with a side of rice and beans. DELICIOUS. It's hard to find a solid diner style coffee shop selling breakfast all day. This is it. It was a big meal kept me full into late afternoon. Great value great food great atmosphere. 10/10 would visit again while in the area

Yelp
Stopped in the other day for a quick bite. Coffee was good and the French toast was delicious.

Yelp
It was my first time here and everything about it was so great! The food was delicious, the service was attentive, and the ambiance was super chill for a Saturday morning. Will definitely making this our go to breakfast spot in Pasadena.

Yelp
Friday morning, breakfast: 12/16/22 // I am a big fan of diners and vintage eateries so discovering Andy's coffee shop was a true pleasure. I am from Burbank and made my way to Pasadena on yoccasion and of needing to meet up in the city for breakfast m. It was a big treat! I followed the recommendations on Yelp and went in someone blind, and was absolutely thrilled. The restaurant was quaint and definitely had a true vintage look and feel. The wait staff was very friendly and pleasant and absolutely a joy to relate with. I really appreciated all of the care and attentive service. We opted to sit at the counter because they only had large four tops and we were just too so we sat at the counter and it was perfect. The menu has a great variety and lots of options for anyone looking for breakfast or lunch. I opted for the Andy's breakfast, which was three pancakes with two eggs and meat. I got the crispy bacon, which was perfect they cooked. The coffee was delicious and everything was perfect. My partner had a number one special with hashbrowns, eggs and toast, and he opted for the sausage. He finished it much more quickly than I did and it was all great coffee was refilled. Water was refilled could not have been a better experience! The only suggestion I have for the owners is to swap out the bright light bulbs in the ceiling fans in the restaurant. The bright white color bulbs really throws off the vintage look and feel. They should swap them out for a warmer, less stark white bulb - even if it is an LED light bulb, they have the different spectrum which delivers a warmer light. The stark, bright light makes it feel and look like an institution or clinical setting. Other than that, the decor, even the Christmas tree was cute and everything was as it should be for a diner that opened in 1960! Love that! Go to Andy's coffee shop if you're in the area, I highly recommend it. Bon appétit! Five stars!
google avatar

Cristina A.

Yelp
I got their soy chorizo with rice and beans with flour tortillas. It was delicious and filling. The service was fast and kept filling our coffee. I go here once or twice a a month. Their servers are excellent.

George F.

Yelp
One of the best breakfast spots in all of Pasadena. This is a 5 star spot with high quality grub made with love. My go to spot for breakfast on the weekends.
google avatar

Liz P.

Yelp
The wait was too long at another local eatery so with Yelp we found this lil gem. I love a good local diner and this one didn't disappoint. Crispy hash browns and bacon. Buttery toasted sourdough with jelly. Yummy bacon cheeseburger. And chorizo and eggs alongside tasty refried beans. Can't go wrong here.
google avatar

Yelp
The corned beef hash was delicious! Perfect amount of salt , fat, and char to the meat. Love it. Service is wonderful too, coffee always topped off
google avatar

Yelp
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Andy's. Tiny little place that is always busy! Small diner feel and you can also eat at a counter. I love the ties it has to Pasadena too. The service can at times be a tad slow but that is just because they are so busy. The staff has always been friendly and accommodating and try to get you seated as quickly as possible. The menu has a great selection and the food is delicious, it tastes like homemade! My parents and I visit Andy's regularly, and my favorite is the breakfast burrito! Try it!
google avatar

Alex H.

Yelp
A hidden gem in Pasadena with a great vibe. It's a diner but at same time feels very local with a at home ambiance. Food was very good, good prices and portions were great. Service was good as well and would recommend to checkout and will come back.

Yelp
Victor, the waiter was extremely rude. He asked where the person you're waiting for?" (Seat for 2) As I am being seated on the booth, "she will be here shortly. " His reply: if not in a few min, the table is needed for others!! Made me feel ver uncomfortable with answer got very upset and thought how he was so rude, to a customer really there was one else waiting to be seated, when friend arrived, there took him 15 min to take our order, she ordered a bagel I'm order basic breakfast eggs n toast, I arrived at 10am she was there at 1020am add another 15min. 1045, finally our ordered was taking, and we were waiting. we finally left at 1130 without our breakfast. The bagel, my breakfast, was on the counter for a while. we asked if that's our breakfa, and t he said "yes" but there's a process we use here!!! also, while I was waiting for my friend , I asked to speak with the person charged, Yesenia, the cook, and also the owner explained to her the situation "I'm sorry he's stressed out." Wow! and the rest of the world is NOT!! Victor needs to learn how to talk to people. Oh, it was all spoken in Spanish, not the problem. Spanish is my 1st language. I have been going to Andy since the 80s and continued going whe I was with my X boyfriend he had a similar experience, waiting for his food, he mentioned to me, I brushed off..yes he was right!! I felt bad the older man helping too, the way Victor talks to him with demanding orders, to serve the food, sad to see the older fragile man being treaded, and mistreated. Next time you're there's see for yourself. Food is good SERVICES SUCKS!!

Yelp
Have been coming here for years! Mom & Pop restaurant with good food. Unfortunately my recent visit was my last. Arrived with our complete party and checked-in, given a 25 minute wait. Restaurant was full so wait time was understandable. As we waited other parties arrived, which is totally expected there. We began to see parties that had arrived after our party were being seated. Upon asking , it was the lack of ownership that was most upsetting from 1.oh you didn't check in with me, the other person didn't tell me 2. Those parties arrived before you- there was no other party there when we checked in 3. Your wait time is another 30 minutes. All because of their own mistake! No apology ever made, ridiculous!
google avatar

Dane G.

Yelp
Ordered the blueberry pancakes because they were 10 dollars and asked if it came with anything. Waiter told me eggs and sausage, so I thought "what a deal, I'll get it" . I go to pay and it asks you if you want to add a tip. So I tip. I was livid when I found out that the eggs and sausage was an extra 6 dollar and 50 cents. Did not appreciate how I was not told up front.

Andy C.

Yelp
Good home cooking & good service , I recommend this place if your in the neighborhood
google avatar

Brad S.

Yelp
Usuallly the service here is good - the food even better. Was seated, served coffee, waited for our waitress....tick, tick. Where is she? 15 minutes later, she's eating breakfast while we waited for her to take our order. Yes, there was only one server. Paid for the coffee and went some where else.

Wen Chi C.

Yelp
Andy's will be closed from December 19 to Dec 26, 2023 due to first family vacation after so many years.
google avatar

Kim T.

Yelp
Andy's has solid food and a solid reputation for friendly and fast service. Whereas I prefer to sit at one of their tables, there are about ten seats at their counter. The staff keeps up a nice chatter with customers and are quick to pour coffee and are quite attentive. I have only been for breakfast and have had their chorizo breakfast burrito and corned beef hash and eggs breakfast. They allow substitutions so I sub out the hash browns for refried beans and the bread option to flour tortillas. In Heaven, I was!

Yelp
Came here while out of town. Loved the place. Got there before it was too busy for a sunday am. Everything was great, service, coffee, food. Came out quick and fresh. Nice spot on the parade route.

Yelp
A nostalgic, pleasant overall dining. experience. This little throwback gem sits centered along old Route 66. Sat at the counter and had myself a hold ole eggs and toast breakfast with coffee. Service was excellent and the interior was decorated with old photos. Will definitely return!

Yelp
Great little coffee shop. Not a fancy environment, but consistent good, fresh food. Today we enjoyed a California omelette and huevos ranchero. Both were excellent! I chose the O'Brien potatoes to go with my omelette. They were seasoned with a Mexican seasoning that made them extra good! Hubby said the huevos ranchero hit the spot! Guess so because he ate them before I could take a picture. Service is impeccable, coffee refills even before you ask. They check vaccination cards before you can be seated and are constantly cleaning to meet/exceed Covid requirements.

Yelp
Nice old school coffee shop, right in the center of Pasadena. Best chilaquiles, ever! Great coffee, amazing service, and really good food!
