(Taunting sing-song) "I know a secret that youoooo don't... I know something that youuuuu don't"...
but not to fear; I'm a nice girl and I will share my sinful, sugary secret....
This ugly looking, almost scary front of a donut shop is open 24 hours a day!!! And inside the scary exterior lays a wonderland of great looking donuts that are among a laudable selection, at a price that is extremely affordable, and fluffy to boot (last descriptor most important, no?)
When I, by pure accident, ran into Andy's, I was a bit leery as I walked with slight disquietude toward a door that was so dark, though the sign did say Open, I was certain of otherwise. But I thought I'd try anyway.....hey! No resistance.... in I go!
whooooaaaa..... so this donut shop is actually a spacious one, and as I crossed the threshold, I thought, "look at all those donuts!!!" I had to chuckle after my friend Jen K's review of her upscale, divine 'adult' pastry review and how her son would be more grateful for a donut shop. Well, I should have brought her son here, because the donuts on display looked really inviting!
Let me expound....never a fan of filled donuts (i find them too sweet), these were double the height of an average.. I could see someone sinking his teeth into that one and enjoying every second of the ride. As another reviewer has indelicately described, the cinnamon rolls (less cinnamon, more like gigantic snail of a sugary donut) that measured 5" in diameter (can I have another whooaaaaa!?).
The crumb raised donut caught me and wouldn't let go, so I acquiesced to its call to be devoured by me, and went with it.
So impressed by this place that lies in the economically depressed area that is Richmond, along an artery that is farther north than I usually care to venture. If you don't pee in your little pants and can take the 'adventure' of making it out here, do it.
All of the friendly, chatty old folk perched in their donut bench booths also added to the charm of my unexpected, yet pleasantly redeeming donut visit
Pssst! Someone had mentioned they sell donut holes for $1/bag? Gotta x-ray vision my way to those for the next time 'round...
