The Best Restaurants in San Francisco’s Tenderloin Neighborhood | Eater SF

"This shop has been in the neighborhood for 16 years, once leaning more toward Mediterranean food and now firmly situated as a coffee and quick bites shop. The gorgeous blue brick exterior hides what is really a down to earth place to watch the world go by with a breakfast sandwich in hand that is both delicious and affordable." - Paolo Bicchieri

I was pleasantly surprised by this store. They great amount of breakfast offerings that it was difficult to choose 1. Tons of different bagel, wraps and coffee combos. There were several baked goods the owner's wife makes. My breakfast burrito was hearty at a great price. I took a to go bag. Definitely a hidden treasure.

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?Go grab a breakfast croissant sandwich or the 100 other options they have like bagels, quiche, pastries or a legendary Prioshki. they got you covered with something sweet too and great music. Classic San Francisco way to start your day ☀️☁️

Google
I’m surprised the ratings here are so high. Maybe it’s bc I got delivery. Got a bacon egg cheese on an English muffin and two quiches. First of all, the breakfast sandwich (BEC on an English muffin) was prob microwaved egg - made in those round molds and super rubbery, dry, and overcooked. Then both quiches idk how to even describe so I have this ugly photo. The crust was really soggy and the egg part just tasted and smelled weird. It was cold and also rubbery consistency. Gave them a 2 instead of a 1 for the benefit of the doubt that this was delivery but honestly I got my food in 15 min so I don’t think it was the delivery

Google
The food was ok, but the amount of pasta salad that comes with the sandwich was a bite and a half. I also wasn’t able to get extra salsa even though they put a tiny amount of pasta salad in these small ramekins

Google
The bagel was decent, but the egg could have been softer, less dry and crumbly. Friendly staff

Google
Absolutely beautiful interior decor at the edge of "The Loin." The food is super fresh and delicious with many options for all taste buds. The Owners truly care about quality and service since 2007. There are some Syrian/Lebanese specialities available here, which are family recipes. Don't miss this place 😋

There was an older gentleman who served me yesterday morning, and each time he looked at me, he had such a large smile on his face and a sparkle in his eye. He had the ability to create an instant sense of warmth, safety and connection within me. It was a great start to my morning...I left with a smile on my face and joy in my heart, and I have no doubt this cafe is true to its name: angels preside here.

Google
So delicious bagels and sandwitches. My top one was Heavenly Breakfast Bagel but also we tried salmon and scrumbled egg ones. Really delicious, all of them. We went once after reading the reviews and kept going every morning during our stay in SFO. Simple place, amazing taste.

Yelp
One of the biggest problems I have in San Francisco is finding a great deli that offers multicultural desserts, sandwiches, soups and consistent chefs specials. Angel Cafe deli offers that! Warm or hot, or even in the middle, they have consistently delivered myself and my friends a taste of their culinary tradition. From fresh homemade baklava, to warmed up dolmas dripped with an,"out of this world" cream sauce that makes me hungry just thinking of it, you can enjoy myriad non alcoholic sodas, fresh juices and my favorite: Angels world class cup of coffee. The next time you want a sandwich with everything on it and an original side dish, trot on up to the corner of Geary and Leavenworth and look for Angel Cafe & Deli. ..... Scott H.

Yelp
My iced latte is so good this morning I just had to review this place. I always stop in right before work and they have my order ready in under 2 minutes. They're awesome! Yes, they have oat milk. Latte was $8.

Yelp
Conveniently located at the corner of Geary and Leavenworth, Angel Cafe & Deli is right next to the 38 bus stop. While waiting for the bus, I popped in and decided to get an apple fritter ($6 pre-tax). They asked if I wanted it heated up and I said yes. Apple fritter was solid and yummy! The store has indoor and outdoor seating available.

Yelp
I've been here a handful of times now. I've tried various breakfast sandwiches, such as the Egg White Master and the Creamy Cheese Scramble Bagel, as well as delicious coffee options like the Milky Way Latte, Snickers Latte, and traditional drinks such as a classic macchiato--all of which were delicious.

Yelp
Solid food and drink stop if you're in the area. I enjoyed the spinach feta breakfast wrap. Plenty of seating both inside and outside. Pleasant service as well.

Yelp
Weird, no line. Two staffs. Sometimes it's one. I missed the one I had before that made me come back today. Now, unsure to come back.

Yelp
Nice breakfast place, My bf and I crashed at the edge of the tenderloin , So it was a short walk to a nicer area in comparison. I thought the inside was very cute and clean. The owner was really sweet! I got the lox and I thought it was pretty incredible and my bf got a sandwich bagel and he didn't like it as much as mine. I like the variety of bagels and cream cheese they had it was pretty great little spot for a quick bite.

Yelp
The last time we were in SF we found Angel and were not disappointed. We were pleasantly surprised to find that it was only 2 blocks from our hotel! The place is spotless and the staff friendly and efficient. While we only had bagels, the traffic in and out indicated that they have a following of satisfied customers. Pricing is extremely fair and the coffee is very good. We will definitely be back the next time we are in SF.

Yelp
Excellent corner neighborhood cafe serving up great breakfast and brunch items. This is a great quick stop or an alternative if you're on the go with some time to spare. Sandwiches are smartly created, the bagel selection is equally delicious, and the pastries are also of decent quality. Espresso pulls are also well-made, and coffee drinks are excellent.

Yelp
WOW!! extremely clean, speedy and convenient! stepping in, i instantly noticed how fresh the interior was. everything was clean and spotless and we even saw the owner cleaning everything that was already clean!! lol i very much was excited to eat my food. you could tell they put a lot of care and work into this business. we wanted to have some donuts but they're right in front of the door and someone came in harassing the staff. the owner quickly handled it and asked them to leave. we, unfortunately, also left without donuts in hand. we ordered a veggie breakfast bagel and a breakfast burrito with bacon and sausage with salsa on the side. the breakfast bagel was delicious... like so crazy fresh and cheesy, it was wonderful. my partner enjoyed his burrito and the side salsa was delicious!! i really enjoyed stealing some for my bagel :^) it was fresh and tasted house made. i would definitely come back again when i'm in the area. they have such an extensive menu and the owner takes great pride in the establishment, as he should since the products are damn good!!

Yelp
If you're looking for a tasty, reliable, and friendly spot to grab sandwiches and coffee in the TL, look no further than Angel Cafe! I've been many times and tried a variety of their sandwiches (all of which have been delicious, so you can't go wrong)... But I always find myself coming back to the Heavenly Breakfast Bagel - if you want a filling, nutritious, and delicious breakfast sandwich, you've found it. The coffee is always fresh and tasty as well. I usually get vanilla lattes and chai lattes, and they are consistently great! Even if you just want coffee, just avoid the million Starbucks locations flanking every corner and come here instead. Finally, the service has always been lovely here. The owner is extremely friendly and never fails to greet us with a smile whenever we come in, and the staff is equally welcoming. Angel Cafe is a true gem!

Yelp
It's a reliable place in the TL to get a good food. It's conveniently located on Geary and Leavenworth, next to a 38/38R bus stop and across the street from a 27 bus stop. They have pastries, donuts, and cold dishes like macaroni salad. They also have piroshkis and falafels. I've been here a couple of times for their sandwiches, breakfast and lunch. They're not bad! I've had their breakfast croissant sandwiches, and I ask for tomato to give it some acidity with the bacon, eggs, and cheese. And today I got a turkey club sandwich on sliced sourdough. I wonder if they can grill it on the panini press, or if that requires a different type of bread. I think that would've made the sandwich less of something you can make at home. It was still good, though. They also have coffee and smoothies. There are a few tables for dining inside and out, and you'll see locals enjoy their meals outside as they people watch. My sandwich today, with chips, cost a little over $15. Avocado was included in the sandwich. It's a little pricey for what I got, but it was what I wanted - a yummy sandwich that's within walking distance from my home. I want to try their lattes next. They have an iced snickers latte with chocolate and hazelnut that sounds good.

Yelp
This is my favorite cafe in the city! They provide a beautiful establishment with angelic ambiance and the best breakfast sandwich in town! Love this place! Service is always friendly! The owner is a sweetheart and provides deliciously fresh ingredients for the community. Thank you doe all you do!
google avatar

Angelita A.

Yelp
Not going back. There no price on a board. So it's my fault for not asking. I didn't it would be 18. I should have gone to my fav diner instead.
google avatar

Cesar M.

Yelp
Excellent breakfast bagel and croissants place. Ordered Salmon bagel, breakfast croissants, orange juice, hot cocoa and capuchino for all of us and everything was excellent, very tasty and super fresh. Service was very attentive, place was clean with some few spots to eat inside and outside.
google avatar

Craig V.

Yelp
Was walking through the city and stumbled across this Cafe and was extremely pleased! The owner was very friendly as I looked through the menu and then ordered the chicken pesto sandwich. I wasn't expecting much, but it was well made with high quality ingredients. Probably one of the best chicken pesto sandwiches I've had. 10/10 would come back

Yelp
A warning for DoorDash users that cannot see the cake slices before ordering: the "Heavenly Chocolate Cake" and "Ferrero Rocher Nutella Cheesecake" are terrible. If you have a chocolate cake craving, it would be better to get some Hostess cupcakes or grocery store cake. The "Heavenly Chocolate Cake" is strange. 75% of it is a bunch of nuts and white cake slivers embedded in a brown mixture that has no chocolate taste. The other 25% is a thick layer of frosting that thankfully tastes like chocolate but also was stale. I wouldn't describe any of the parts as chocolate cake. My husband and I split each of the slices, and neither of us bothered to finish this one. The "Ferrero Rocher Nutella Cheesecake" fell apart when dividing it into halves because it is more like a pudding than a cheesecake. There was barely any Nutella or chocolate flavor in the pudding, and the crust was super thick, uneven, and why was it SALTY??? It tasted more like garlic bread than any cheesecake crust I've had in my life. It was saltier than savory pie crusts even. I gave up on the crust and imagined I was eating cheesecake pudding for the rest. The chipotle chicken wrap was pretty good, and maybe Angel's generally has good sandwiches and wraps. But at $7/slice and with a 4.5-star-average rating, I expected much better for the cake slices. I would recommend mastering simpler cake recipes before trying fancier ones, or at least lowering the prices on these weird inventions.

Yelp
Lol how does this place have 4.5 stars? Got a lox bagel yesterday and it was a joke. $12+ for something that should not even be called a lox bagel. The bagel was chewy and did not taste fresh, there was literally 2 oz of lox on my bagel. Hard Pass!
google avatar

Fran D.

Yelp
Got two sesame bagels toasted with cream cheese/ with lox, onion tomato and capers. And one small coffee. The total was $27.00!!! Appalling! For two bagels and a coffee?!? That's insane! Barely any salmon on it though and my bagel was half burned on the ends. Never going here again omg! So dissatisfied.

Yelp
Breakfast burrito looked good but didnt taste good though sorry to say. The little business appeared to be run well. My issue was with the breakfast burrito, really cheap bland cheese, minimal eggs, filled mostly with boiled potatoes no browning on the potatoes whatsoever. The turkey sausage tasted horrible to me i should have ordered bacon i guess. Nothing against the service at all the food was just very poor.
google avatar

Bo B.

Yelp
Love the breakfast food here. The lamb gyro was delicious as was the heavenly bagel. The dirty chai was very good too.

Roanne Q.

Yelp
Lovely little cafe with very friendly staff! I recommend the veggie breakfast burrito :)
google avatar

Yelp
Angel Cafe has deli standards--bagels, smoothie, and sandwiches. It's middle eastern with dolmas and wraps. The menu has a good list and there's much to choose from at decent prices. My bagel was about $5. It had tomato, cucumber, and cream cheese. it's for breakfast or lunch...a quick grab at Geary and Leavenworth.

Jason L.

Yelp
Lots of options for bagels. Breakfast sandwich was good but nothing special. The everything bagel tasted fresh though. Reasonably priced and service was good.

Siaosi T.

Yelp
Breakfast burritos was good, But the balance of meat, beans, cheese, etc...not so good, more beans, less meat, less cheese, less avocados, etc...
google avatar

Yelp
Adorable little breakfast shop on Geary! This place has such local homie vibes. I really loved how friendly they were. I am always leaving tips now but with these guys I have them a little extra because of how special they made the experience. Hands down great customer service and even BETTER assortments of different coffees, lattes and food options. My favorite order was the White Mocha. Better than starbucks!
google avatar

Rolin S.

Yelp
The best service anytime I come here for myself or picking up for others and the food is excellent they make it they way it looks in their pictures and exactly how you want it everything I order in my pictures
google avatar

Yelp
Incredible food (one of the best bagels in San Francisco in my opinion!), the staff are lively and kind, and the place has a great family owned feeling. Definitely suggest making a stop if you're in the area!
google avatar

Karen W.

Yelp
Adorable little cafe where the staff couldn't be nicer! Prices are reasonable and the food was tasty!! Great for a quick meal to go!

P J.

Yelp
Nice corner family run deli and cafe. The sandwich tasted yummy but was a little messy to eat, especially when unwrapped on returning home with it (chairs were up in the cafe so couldn't eat fresh there). Workers were friendly and helpful.

Yelp
I LOVE Breakfast!! But even more than that, I love breakfast delivered directly to my home with no lines and no fuss!! lol - found this gem on Postmates and cross referenced Yelp to find dazzling 4.5 star rating! Since it was Yelp-approved, I hopped right to it and ordered the following: 1. Breakfast burrito with sausage 2. Heavenly breakfast sandwich 3. Donut (duh - I had to..) Both burrito and sandwich were SOOOOO GOOD! Burrito was dense and filling and I just love all burritos! Breakfast sandwich was like filling all my favorite things and balancing them perfectly into a bagel...sigh. So good. Definitely recommend this place for a solid breakfast joint! Delicious in person AND delivered! Yummmms!
google avatar

Mylin D.

Yelp
Super delicious breakfast and middle eastern food available at all open hours. The deserts including the baklavas are delicious too. Great service and nice indoor seats at the window to people watch as you enjoy your meal.
google avatar

Adwait A.

Yelp
Very average bagels. Got the onion and jalapeño and they look like plain. Their menu pics show bagels looking very different. These were pretty average. The matcha was too sweet, it was one spoon from the Trader Joe's matcha box! Had decent outdoor seating options
google avatar

Charlotte T.

Yelp
Ok the food well the deviled egg I bought was good, very happy they don't add salt. I also ordered a toasted croissant. When I received it noticed it was the size of my palm. Yea yea I complaining, however when I spend $3.75 on plain bread it needs to be big. I ask the man at the counter for a bigger one as I pointed to the display case. He tried to insure me that they all were the same. It was obvious it wasn't because he became upset. As he put the new one in the bag and tossed it at me, without toasting it. The second one was dry, leaving me to throw away. I most diffently will not be returning to this establishment based on poor customer service.
google avatar

Yelp
Solid place for breakfast with a large menu and very fair prices. Convenient walk from Union Square. Nice, friendly people. Neighborhood is a little dicey but it makes for good entertainment if you're eating outside and people watching....

Yelp
The Saturday we were walking the streets of San Francisco, I was in dying need for a bagel. We must have walked 5-6 blocks without any bagel or donut shops, which I thought was odd. Finally on a random corner was this small deli with people sitting all along the sides enjoying cups of coffee during the brisk morning hour. Before I could tell my boyfriend "let's go", he was already in the door. I already fixed my eyes on what I wanted so there was no waiting period for me. The menu had a wide variety of things mostly, Mediterranean options, but my heart needed a bagel. I think the owner helped us out, a super nice guy. I asked him if I can build my own breakfast sandwich and he said "yup!" I got a specialty bagel, with eggs, cream cheese, cheddar cheese, sprouts and avocado, then tacked on an ice coffee. I was able to find a couple of seats outside while waiting for our order, so that was nice that were weren't forced to walk and eat our bagels. Very quickly our bagels were ready and MAN when I tell you, this bagel was outstanding! It's odd because there was nothing that was over the top about this bagel, but it was just so delicious. I must have inhaled my bagel as fast as it took to make because I looked up and my boyfriend was barely on his first bite. All in all Angel Café was a great little spot, a little pricy, but a good bagel spot!

Kevin S.

Yelp
One of the better cafes on the edge of Lower Nob hill. My go-to's are The San Francisco Bagel sandy and the prosciutto panini Hard to beat prices as well. Definitely recommend if you are in the area.
google avatar

Felipe L.

Yelp
Is a great place to get a breakfast sandwich or bagel, good coffee and great costumer services. You have.
google avatar

Korrina V.

Yelp
Awesome customer service ! Employees were wearing mask and sanitizer is available. Breakfast bagels were delicious! I really liked the maple bacon cronut and regular strawberry donut ! Strawberry cronut was ok but I didn't like the flavor and filling too much . Daughter liked her strawberry banana smoothie! There are a lot of breakfast and lunch sandwich options . Yummy bagels and donuts as well as various other sides available. Would recommend reason for 4 stars is because employees didn't have gloves on when preparing food .
google avatar

Leonid R.

Yelp
Angel café made my day , Great coffee, perfectly Toasted bagel and excellent service by a very friendly barista!
google avatar

K L.

Yelp
Wonderful staff and sparkling clean interior. Menu is varied and everything is at a great price, almost half of what some cafes in SF charge. A wonderful place to people watch on Geary while sipping coffee and listening to some relaxing music.
google avatar

Debbie G.

Yelp
Best chai in SF. Super friendly owners and great bagel sandwiches! My go to when I get the chance and am in the area. Although honestly I would drive there just for their chai.
google avatar

Leina K.

Yelp
I keep on coming back here hoping that it'll be better than the last time and it just never is. The overall reviews are great, ambiance looks super cute- maybe I just ordered the wrong thing last time. Wandering along Geary and too lazy to walk down to Starbucks, I go to Angel Cafe. Again. My mistake last time was ordering the Lox bagel with the least fresh lox I've ever seen in my life. This time around I thought hey- let's get a breakfast bagel, you can't go wrong with eggs cheese and bacon. But I was wrong. Eggs were a little green and I don't even know how, cheese wasn't even melted and was basically one of those square cheddar pieces you ate as a kid. I need to keep my promise to never return and to just walk anywhere else.
google avatar

Angela G.

Yelp
What a fantastic place to stop for breakfast before a big day! The service was truly superb, and the food was incredible. The heavenly breakfast bagel was absolutely the definition of heavenly, chased with an iced coffee and orange cannoli - my stomach could not have been happier. Prices were super reasonable for such a hearty breakfast. If I'm ever back in San Francisco, I'd most certainly drop by again!
google avatar

Sabra M.

Yelp
Angel Cafe is a neighborhood fav! About 2 years ago they put a lot of work into revamping the place, painting it, getting new fridges, everything. I thought it was a great move considering other coffee shops moved in around that time, and it showed they were up for some competition! the owners are also super friendly, and if you introduce yourself, they wont forget your name :) i love their heavenly bagels, coffee, and they have great pastries too. support your local businesses, and def stop by!
google avatar

Vandy C.

Yelp
A perfect neighborhood corner deli that offers the right start to your day with fresh breakfast croissant and bagel sandwiches. Their coffee is strong and smooth. A quick tip their cookies and smoothies are amazing too.
google avatar

James D.

Yelp
A reliable neighborhood spot for quick breakfast items and Mediterranean tasty treats. The space itself will not inspire extensive Instagram exposes, and that's in part the appeal: It's a normal, solid place that provides relatively cheap, quality food in an increasingly precious, abnormal city. I regularly come here to pick up dolmas ($1 for two) or falafel ($1 each), which make a fine and satisfying breakfast on their own for basically no money. The spanakopita ($5) is a more fulfilling alternative and a worthy upgrade. It's also possible to build a great lunch out of these items plus the various salads without leaving the deli counter. Really the deli counter is the main event and the reason I go back. They have the full complement of other coffeeshop choices, though neither the prices nor quality are show stoppers. The coffee is nothing special but adequate and they have a decent array of teas, and they have it ready and hot when you need a cup in a hurry. The bagels do their job. I haven't tried the yogurts though they look decent. In warmer months the outside tables make for a nice place to linger a minute, though the inside is a little cramped for serious coffeeshop lounging. Service is fast and attentive and they make it clear they want my business and will customize orders and make recommendations. Buy them presents, or at least buy their falafel!

Yelp
Coffee that's not too dark. Interesting quiches and cold lunch on display. Good find for. Quiet sit down and watch the streets
