Detroit’s Best Delis | Eater Detroit

"Situated in a shopping center in Macomb County, Angela’s Italian sandwich is worth the drive. The fresh-baked sub roll is out of this world, and the sandwich itself is both sweet and spicy. Angela’s also has an array of breakfast sandwiches, pastries, loaves of bread, bagels, cannoli, and prepared foods both frozen and refrigerated, plus a separate table with discounted goods. Orders can be placed online." - Danny Palumbo

The Best Italian Delis in Metro Detroit | Eater Detroit

"Angela’s in Macomb County is home to one of the best Italian sandwiches in the area, which is uniquely spicy and sweet, but don’t sleep on its selection of breakfast sandwiches, either. In addition, the deli is a great place to pick up mortadella, soppressata, capocollo, and prosciutto di Parma. There’s also a selection of homemade frozen soups, sauce, lasagna, and usually some discounted day-old baked goods, too." - Danny Palumbo

Google
The staff is kind & attentive, The aromas remind you of Nonna & the flavors 😘🤌🏼 I chose the Blue House Turkey which has Roasted Turkey Breast, Fresh Mozzarella, Arugula, Basil Pesto, Balsamic Glaze. Every flavor in this sandwich goes so well together & the bread 🥖 is absolutely perfect! They definitely are not shy with the ingredients. Highly recommend!

Google
I found out about this place via the township Facebook page, and locals were raving about the sandwiches here. Took a chance and went, got their smoke turkey sub and was very impressed with how fresh the ingredients were, how quickly it was made and how reasonable the prices are. I went back for three days in a row, trying their 4th street wolverine and famous Italian sub. All great choices, with a unique flavor. The staff are very friendly and fast. Even during lunchtime I've waited maybe at most 3 minutes. The baked goods are equally good. In a world of $16 sub sandwiches, having fresh baked bread with garden fresh vegetables for just $11 is a no Brainer. Stop in, get a sandwich, and you'll be hooked.

Google
I thought about not reviewing , but I had to for the sake of my fellow citizens. Id prefer they fly under the radar, but it would be selfish of me. Whatever your deli pleasure is, Angela's does it and more. Huge portion, high quality, friendly service. You want a homemade coffee cake? Bagel? Danish? Loaf of bread? All this on top of the awesome sandwiches. Enjoy!

Google
I’ve heard such great things about their Italian Subs so I had to give them a try. I ordered the Italian Sub with Hot Peppers and I think I was in heaven! The Italian Dressing is what really blew me away, the Veggie to Meat ratio was perfect, and everything was so fresh. I was in and out in 10 minutes, and the service was very personable and attentive. Small place but definitely worth the hype!

Google
My first time experience here was great from start to finish! The food was fresh and tasted amazing. Thanks for being kind, and calling to remind me of my order, though no one realized I was standing in the store. Lol I was late but whomever was there knows what I'm talking about. I'll be back, Amber 💜 I ordered Oakland and arch sandwich with French onion soup

Google
Egg and cheese sandwich on focaccia is a GAME CHANGER! Loved that it came with coffee - there’s a dispenser for coffee and all kinds of creamers and syrups.. totally felt like a barista! Will have to stop by and check out their famous deli sandwiches. I ordered online and food was still warm when received despite the yucky MI weather it took longer than normal to get there

Google
Finally had the opportunity to try the Italian classic. It is my new number 1 best Italian sub in Metro Detroit. Supplanted a few high quality establishments in the region. The bread for me separates them from the rest. The perfect tight bite which holds the submarine in its proper place rather than falling apart and making a mess. I will be back. Great work Angela's!

Google
I was searching for a good Italian deli and stopped in and got the ham and cheese and husband got Italian the flavor of the peppers. And balsamic with ham was amazing. Also got a bunch of cookies to take home excited to try those

Yelp
Omg another great sandwich. Small place but mighty value. Lovers lined up at noon to 1 pm Grab bread to go and other cold cuts! The soups are great too.

Yelp
Well worth the nearly 20 mile round trip drive. Couple of bagels -1 all everything,1 salt. Added in my store bought cream cheese- jalapeño- I had all everything- was great. Busy busy place on a Saturday- but lots of help - was out in like 2 minutes

Scott S.

Yelp
Probably one of the best Italian Subs around. You can tell they take a lot of care and use top quality ingredients. Other sandwiches are great too like the Oakland and Arch but I am partial to the Italian. Service is always fast.

Yelp
Amazing sandwiches and pastries. Very nice interior and workers, fast service. Great place to grab lunch to go

Yelp
First off, I don't typically go for deli sandwiches, just not that big a fan. If I'm dining out, I'd rather get a hot meal than a cold cut sandwich and a bag of chips. So for me to give a sandwich shop 4* it really must be doing something right. That said, my wife is a big fan of turkey sandwiches and Angela's turkey sandwiches in particular. So from time to time we end up here. It is a huge step up from your typical sandwich shop. The bread is the foundation of a good sandwich. Angela's bakes theirs in house and it's delicious. Nice and crusty with soft, chewy goodness on the inside. The meats they use are good quality and sliced to order so it is definitely fresh. The vegetables are also always fresh cut. I think they make their Italian dressing in house too. That also is very good. In addition to sandwiches, they also have a good selection of fresh baked sweets. I've sampled a few and enjoyed each of them.

Yelp
The sandwiches are gourmet level. The fritters are reasonably priced. I have yet to try the soups!
google avatar

Mel K.

Yelp
Angela's bakery is the best! Their subs are fantastic, love their bread. The service is always great and we always get things to go. Love Angela's for bread, scones, and muffins.
google avatar

Yelp
The sandwich was the weekly special. It was reasonably priced. The sandwich was pretty darn good and fulfilling. I would love to try the other sandwiches so I will be back and would recommend this place for a good tasting sandwich.
google avatar

Yelp
Everything about this place is just great .....................The Italian sub with hot pepper is so good.
google avatar

Brittany H.

Yelp
Once again, another great sandwich!! The classic Italian was all I needed. Fresh meats with cheese and mild and hot peppers. Loved it. My grandparents always get the 4th street Wolverine and say it's delicious, but I don't like horseradish so I opt out of this sandwich. Tip: order online and save yourself the wait for someone to make a sandwich. Will be back soon to try the remaining few sandwiches
google avatar

Kevin H.

Yelp
This was maybe my 3-4 time ordering from here. I had the Italian the other times and now I've found my favorite sandwich. Everything I've had here is amazing. The bagels are amazing and fresh. The cannoli donuts are worth the drive no matter where you are coming from. Can't go wrong whether you go with fresh baked goods from that day or save a couple bucks with their day old items. This is my go to spot for sandwiches and amazing treats

Joshua E.

Yelp
The perfect Italian Deli!!!! The best subs you can find, desserts that will blow your mind, The M&M cookies will change your life. You can ask for hot peppers on your sub and they add so much flavor and a little heat. The staff is super friendly and are always going out of their way to be extra helpful. Try it once and you will be a customer for life. La gastronomia più perfetta........... The most perfect Deli

Yelp
This is a difficult review because the food is actually good, yet I cannot bring myself to give this place a good yelp review. As I said, the subs are actually quite good. The Italian, the 4th Street Wolverine.. really awesome selections. Great flavor, great ingredients and hat's about where the pleasantries end. The service is absolutely horrendous. 5-6 people making subs and every one of them are painfully slow. If you're on a lunch break, don't even think about walking in and ordering a sandwich. Maybe order ahead? Forgettabouttit, I online ordered, took me 15 minutes to drive there and sat and waited for another 10 minutes before someone asked me if I had been helped. I said I was waiting for an online order, she asked my name and asked the sandwich makers if there was an order for me ready... they said no. So that's 25 minutes right there. It took another 10 minutes to make my order so that's a total wait of 35 minutes. Meanwhile, as I sat and waited, it seemed walk in orders were being made before mine. Infuriating! My order was paid for already!!! It's a complete and utter cluster how that business operates. If you just sit back and watch (while you wait of course) it'll literally make your head explode. Ambiance... it is small, tiny place and the amount of people sitting around waiting for the extremely slow service to catch up, you almost start to feel claustrophobic. People just moving around randomly to get out of other people's way, bumping into each other, stepping on feet, it's like watching a cluster of cells squirm around randomly under a microscope. People just moving around with nowhere to go while the extremely slow staff take their time preparing orders. And to hear them talking and laughing amongst themselves while they slowly make their way through the orders piling up just makes the anger build as you watch the time on your watch (or phone) tick by, as your lunch time ends, yet you don't even have your food yet and still have to drive back. It's almost as if the staff know they're slow but don't care. It's sloth-like slow. I'd love to give this place a 5 star review, but I can't. Food and smiling staff can only carry your business so far. At some point your service has to account for something. In this case, it accounts for everything. The slow service is the anchor with this place, and only if I am absolutely starving and have about 45 minutes to grab a sandwich, will ever go back. This was my second visit to Angela's and it was even slower than the first time .

Yelp
Tried Angela's today... I will be back! Ordered the sandwich of the week, the Maurice Sammie & an Italian. The bread was sooo good & fresh! Plenty of meat sliced really thin, but again, sooo good and fresh. I would've liked more dressing on it so next time I'll order it with extra extra Maurice dressing! The Italian may have been even better than the Maurice! My car smelled delicious on the way home! I called my order in and it was bagged up & ready to go when I arrived. Also purchased some S-cookies. They are vanilla flavor, which I liked a lot. My mom prefers fennel over vanilla, since that's what she grew up with, but still thought they were good. Can't wait to go back! UPDATE: The "almost a pound" of S-cookies I picked up for my mom were gone by dinner time.... Stopped in Sunday and picked up another lb. Very light & addictive!! Highly recommend!

Yelp
ATTENTION!!! This bakery is the BEST!! Those lady's in there are working their tails off. Love the fact that they all work as a team in such a tight area making amazing sandwiches. Simple prices with local add ons such as Great Lakes potato chips. I got the Italian with mild peppers and was it so amazing, had a sweet sauce taste and peppers were amazingly fresh. I'm drooling still and want another sub.

Jordan V.

Yelp
Small little shop with the best Italian sub I've ever had ($12). It was busy but they took my order and got it done fast. Everything looked absolutely delicious and they even have breakfast options AND baked goods. Yall check this place out!

Yelp
The sandwiches from Angela's are outstanding. Large and custom -made to order. Amazing bread, creative weekly sandwiches.
google avatar

Lori G.

Yelp
My brother kept talking about this place so I had to go. It is delicious. Authentic Italian sandwich's. Made to order cannolis. Really a fantastic place to get lunch. The girls are extremely kind to me and I appreciate the quality of food and the service.

Jeff S.

Yelp
Food and service is out of this world . I would try one of each on the menu. I don't think you can do wrong by their menu.
google avatar

Abhilash T.

Yelp
I arrived around noon, and there were already seven customers ahead of me and about five more walked in after me. In other words, people know this place is fantastic and they are willing to wait for their food to be prepared in front of them. It's a small and narrow spot but smells amazing inside and the folks were all busy preparing the food and taking orders. I ordered the Oakland & Arch and I can definitely recommend it! Pastrami, corner beef, Swiss cheese with their vinegar slaw. I loved that they used purple cabbage instead of green. The stirato baguette is the perfect consistency of crunch on the outside and soft on the inside. Everything was fresh and the portion was more than enough. I also got a lemon bar, only because there was no carrot cake. It was pretty good as well. But the sandwich has made me wanna add this to my weekly rotation! I gotta try all the sandwiches and report back to you guys. So I'll be doing just that.
google avatar

Jacqueline K.

Yelp
Sandwiches were delicious and MASSIVE! Cannoli were good, but the filling has a hint of citrus, so if you prefer more vanilla-centric flavors, heads up. We love the citrus so it was great for us!

Joe J.

Yelp
I find it rude to go and buy a soda and a sub then check out and be prompted to tip. The sub was just okay. Don't think I will be returning.
google avatar

Yelp
Hello Yelpers, I just enjoyed a nice sandwich from Angela's. I got the 4th Street Wolverine. Roast beef, turkey, cheese, and a nice vinaigrette over some shredded lettuce. The bread is of high quality, clearly baked in house. Quite frankly, I don't have an elaborate review. This is just a solid sandwich shop. I've been a few times and I've never had anything to be upset about it. I highly recommend stopping by for a sandwich. If you are lactose intolerant like myself, be sure to not order cheese. I just made that mistake and now I am paying for it... 9/10, good job Angela
google avatar

Yelp
I finally was able to make my first trip here today with my mom. We both were blown away at how adorable the restaurant was, how friendly and kind the staff were, and how delicious the sandwiches were. We also bought a frozen soup to try in a few days. I know from the sandwiches alone I'll definitely be back here.

Yelp
My son was on Spring Break and I promised him a celebratory lunch for being accepted into a very difficult STEM high school! So proud of him! He wanted subs and he wanted something for dessert. I belong to a Facebook group for area restaurants and this place always gets amazing reviews. Located in the 22 and Romeo Plank strip mall, next to green lantern pizza this place is very conveniently located. It's also only 3 miles from my house! This is a deli, and they sell a variety of food items. But they have this fresh french bread and offer a variety of sub options made right in front of you. I chose an Italian sub and he chose the sandwich of the day. We made them meals and got soda and chips. Both subs were delicious. We had planned on sharing but I was full after half of one. He saved room for dessert so he only ate half of his as well. We went back to the counter and looked over their variety of freshly baked desserts. He chose German chocolate cake, which was served in an individual cup. I am trying to lose 5 more pounds since I put so much weight on last summer making up for all of 2020 lol. So I only snuck a bite. Sooo good!!! There is limited seating but we definitely had room to stay and eat. This is definitely more of a carry out place though. I will warn you that the word is out! This place is popular and it was packed full! They were well staffed and very quick. They understand the assignment. They get you in and out quickly for lunch! The food was reasonably priced as well. Only disappointment was that they do not participate in doordash. Boo. I would have loved to have this be a place where I order food for my son when I'm out. And I plan to be gone quite a bit this summer!

Jack N.

Yelp
Went at recommendation for Italian sandwiches and pastries. WOW - miss old world quality and Angela's delivers!! Fresh deli sliced meats, great toppings, amazing fresh baked bread. A++ HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

R. F.

Yelp
I purchased one loaf of bread here a while ago. The bread slices had major gaps in the slice. I could see hole in the slice. I will never purchase bread here.
google avatar

J T.

Yelp
Great sandwich's, the apple fritters are the best, fair pricing, friendly staff. I would recommend trying.
google avatar

Bridgette Z.

Yelp
A true hidden gem!! I've lived down the road from here for over 3 years now and i was inclined to stop in today for lunch with a friend. We ordered the Italian sandwich and the sandwich of the week. They were both incredible. One yelp review i read said this place is up there with Ventimiglia's in Sterling Heights. Well we both agreed that Angelas is BETTER than ventimiglia's. Yes you read that right, better!!! Excellent fresh bread on the subs, generous meat and cheese portions, delectable garlic mayo and italian dressing, i could go on forever. I also tried the cannoli, one with chocolate chips and one with almonds. I love that they are filled when you order and not just sitting in a display case. They have some kind of lemon zest in the cannoli cream which was a nice delicious surprise. I also ordered some cookies for my kids and they enjoyed them thoroughly. They have a pretty large deli selection where you can get freshly sliced meats and cheeses, lots of soups to choose from, several pastry and cookie options, even donuts. You absolutely have to check this place out. Oh and the girls working were so nice!
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
Definitely will be returning. I finally made it here , ordered for Caprese sub with roasted turkey amazing . I got fresh loaf of bread too .
google avatar

Stacey B.

Yelp
We decided to try this place after a pretty bad brunch at Testa Barra, but that's a whole different review. I've been craving a good cannoli, but unless it's from a family get together, I usually only buy them from Tringali's. In many areas of Italy, cannolis are made with a ricotta cream filling , so it's rare to find a recipe without ricotta. When I was told the cannoli cream was not made with ricotta, I got so excited and purchased two. Big. Mistake. First off, it is literally a cream flavor and not sweet at all, if even has a lemon flavor to it. One bite and I was done. If you've ever had a cannoli, do not get one from here, it will ruin you, and not in a good way. I also purchased an eclair. Typically filled with a custard, but there's is filled with a cream. Not bad, but not what I was expecting. If you're looking for an Italian treat, go to the OG's at Tringali's, they are worth the trip!
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Best Italian Sub. So good. Quaint little Italian deli. The staff (Ava) was very attentive and accommodating. Italian lunchmeat was authentic and tasty. Great Italian sub dressing. Fun, Faygo pop flavors.
google avatar

Jackey A.

Yelp
There subs are just amazing! Love the staff always so kind and knowledgeable! The store is very easy to get in and out of and super small and cute inside!

Matti H.

Yelp
This deli & bakery used to be great. Nowadays you'll be lucky to find them open. You probably have a better chance of winning the lottery than this old gem being opened. Furthermore, to walk in around 10am and there is zero other customers in this joint, they are too lazy to make a sandwich as they don't start until 10:30/11am now. Its amazing how lazy employees have become & to let $$$ walk out is a sign that they'll be out of business soon. Theres many other options in the area who provide regular business hours, provide excellent customer service, and are in the business for putting out great products for a profit. Seems simple, not for these guys. I don't recommend anymore.
google avatar

Mark H.

Yelp
Was pleasantly surprised with Angela's! They had a wide variety of desserts, donuts, and more. They also sell fresh baked breads and rolls. Had the Italian sandwich and it was excellent! Very fresh and filling. Will surely be stopping by again soon to try out some of their other items.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Great little family owned business! The sandwiches are fresh every single time! The bread is ON POINT! My favorite sandwich is the Maurice but it's not a permanent item on the menu. When it's not there, I recommend getting the Nine Thirteen Vaughn! The service is great and the ladies there are always super friendly!
google avatar

Aleana W.

Yelp
Get the BUREK!!!! Yes yes YES! They recently changed names from Greg's Bakery to Angela's Italian Deli and the remodel is awesome! It's really welcoming inside and offers seating to enjoy your baked goodies and Burek! I ate my Burek at the back of my truck- I couldn't wait to tear the box open. Next time I'll sit at the communal high top table and enjoy my Burke. Oh the Burek! They offer meat, cheese and spinach with cheese. I suggest calling before going in for the Burek, just in case they have sold out, or need to bake you a fresh one. They have a beautiful selection of pastries and sweet treats, don't believe me- just go take a peek at all of Ron C. pictures he's posted of various desserts. I have had the fresh homemade apple cinnamon bread and it was pretty damn amazing! Along with all the pastry items and fresh baked Burek, Mark, the owner, is baking some killer bread for the fresh, made to order subs and sandwiches. Need a cake for a celebration, or just a random Tuesday, again they have a pretty impressive selection. Take your pick from Triple Chocolate Torte, Strawberry Torte or a Cassata Cake all prices at $28, just to name a few. Go see Mark and check out this awesome deli/pastry shop. Grab a few delicious items to take home or sit and enjoy them inside. Trust me- you'll be back for a return visit!

Yelp
I ordered the Italian sandwich and it was amazing. You could tell all the ingredients were both fresh and of high quality! Will def be going back!

Yelp
Angela's Italian Deli and Bakery is a hidden gem in Macomb Township. We have visited Angela's pretty frequently in the past year, and everything they make can be recommended without hesitation. We've had most of their sweet items. Their Italian cookies are delicious; tender, not too sweet, with a nice glaze on top. Their chocolate chip cookies taste like homemade. Their apple fritter bread is to die for. Their pastries are delicious... try the cake pops, as they are always good. Their bread is fantastic, and we've tried several different kinds, and all were really good. But, what I really want to review is Angela's Italian subs, and other sub sandwiches. All are freshly prepared with their homemade bread that comes warm out of the oven when it's time to start making sandwiches. I've watched as they brought out the steaming bread from the back, and began preparing sandwiches with it! It doesn't get any better than that. The Italian sub has Italian lunch meat on it, along with cheese, shredded lettuce, and a delicious giardiniara (marinated vegetables). You can add other toppings if you want, but there's really no need. The Italian sub is fantastic from Angelas. We have had their other subs as well, and all were amazing. Fresh meats, fresh toppings, but most of all FRESH BREAD!! Their soups are freshly prepared each day, too. And I highly recommend their cheddar ale soup! They also make a KILLER macaroni and cheese. Go to Angela's and order something. You will not be disappointed!
google avatar

Kara G.

Yelp
I've been in here twice now...the first time I was just in the plaza and wanted to pop in to see what they carried. I was a little nervous because they never seem overly busy so I was worried the product wouldn't be fresh but that is far from the case! The cheese Burek is good (first time ever having it so nothing to compare it to). This time we picked up some doughnuts, half dozen $4.99 which is not a bad price at all! They were large and very delicious! $6 for half of the Burek which is 6 slices. Give the place a try! It's small but has a decent variety and a little market area as well.

Yelp
Updated to five stars from four. Tried them again today, and instead of the Italian sub, I got their 4th Street Wolverine, which was terrific. Ventimiglia's and Gonella's still win for their Italian subs, but the 4th Street Wolverine had tremendous flavor with the horseradish mayo along with the balsamic they put on there, and the sandwich came together really well. I will get this one in the future, unless the Sandwich of the Week tempts me away. And yes, their sub bread is really a great selling point. But their continued quality with their baked goods is what *really* sells me on the place. Their seeded Italian bread is just magic to me: really crusty and impossibly light/soft inside, I can't stop eating the stuff, just plain as it is. Magic, honestly. The work of gypsies! ;) We're not as taken with the wheat bread, and the cookies I bought today (all of one day old) were merely okay, but buying them was worth supporting this place and trying them out. I certainly didn't overpay for them, that's for sure! Go. Have doughnuts. Have sandwiches. Have bread. Have pastries (which I haven't tried yet, but they look very good!). Just go and support them and die happy whilst eating great baked goods. Glad they're there.
google avatar

Jason R.

Yelp
The Italian Sub at Angela's is amazing! During the summer months, I would drive all the way down to Ventimiglia's in Sterling Heights for sandwiches for the boat and a day out on the lake. Then I found Angela's and discovered that the Italian Subs here blow all others out of the water!
google avatar

Katie K.

Yelp
Best blueberry scones EVER! Freshest deli sandwiches in town. The blue house turkey and the Italian are definitely our favorites! You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

William C.

Yelp
Vegan Sammie is sooo delicious!! Excited to have a vegan carry out option here in Macomb. Also, they are doing a fantastic job with COVID precautions. Everyone is properly masked and only allowing 3 customers in the shop at a time. Will definitely be back for more vegan sammies and hope they start to expand their vegan menu

Eric H.

Yelp
Angela's is THE BEST spot to get an amazing sandwich. Everything on the menu is fantastic but they, hands down, have THE VERY BEST Italian in the Detroit/Metro Detroit area! Bread baked fresh daily, meats sliced fresh and high quality ingredients. If Angela's is not your favorite sandwich then you simply haven't been yet.
google avatar

Pete G.

Yelp
It's all good at Angela's! My personal favorites are the boars head sandwiches and the take and bake mac n' cheese! Finish the order off with a cookie and you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Aaron T.

Yelp
Their food is great, from the sandwiches to their flavorful cakes. Right up there with Ventimiglia's. I highly recommend.
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Great place! We love the sandwiches. The Italian with hot peppers is loaded! The shortbread is so good! Can't decide between the lavender or the rosemary and sea salt (so I get them both). Perfect for my coffee or tea break. The scones are also a treat.

Kelley C.

Yelp
I went for the first time a few days ago. The workers were so kind and helpful. The baked treats were delicious. The place was small but the bakery smelled so good and everything from baked goods to soups and sauces looked great. I cannot wait to go back and try other things.
