Best Mexican Restaurants in Downriver Detroit | Eater Detroit

"The Ramirez family is part of a “family dining circuit,” with Linda owning Angelia’s and her siblings who own and operate Blue Margarita and Los Galanes (fun fact: the founder of Los Galanes, Armando Galan, was also the founding owner of Armando’s, the birthplace of Detroit’s ubiquitous botana). The family members frequently hold a friendly competition in which they determine who makes the best salsa between the three. Angelina’s offers carry-out specials in addition to daily dine-in lunch and dinner specials served with rice and beans." - Courtney Burk

Exceptional large burger nacho today. Devon was our bar tender and did a fantastic job. The fried ice cream was a hum dinger.

Google
It's such a nice warm environment walking in. All of the staff are kind, welcoming, and attentive. The food tastes great! The tamales and chicken quesadillas were a hit with the little one. 20/10, she said. The chicken enchiladas were a 10/10. Everything all the way to using the bathroom, which looked very clean and maintained. Everything was great! 100% satisfied customers and will be back!

I recently visited this Mexican restaurant, and it was a truly disappointing experience. Located in a rundown part of town, the first impression was far from welcoming. The decor felt cheap and outdated, and the overall cleanliness left much to be desired. As for the food, it lacked any sense of authenticity. The flavors were bland, and the dishes seemed like they were mass-produced rather than made with care. Tacos were dry and uninspired, I won’t even bother rating the Velveeta cheese tasting queso and the salsa tasted more like a store-bought condiment than a fresh accompaniment. Service was good, the waitress was very sweet. I will say that she had a good personality. It's unfortunate but this place missed the mark on almost every front. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone looking for genuine Mexican cuisine or a pleasant dining experience. Save your time and money and seek out a place that truly embraces the rich flavors and culture of Mexico.

Google
You get chips as an appetizer with a choice of medium or hot salsa, I like medium & they're pretty good. My girlfriend got some kind of Mexican shrimp with salsa, she liked it. I got steak fajitas & i liked them very much. The steak & the cheese they used were very good. I'd definitely go back just for some fajitas. 👌👍

Excellent food and excellent service. Quick and delicious. Our server Selena was wonderful! We're from out of town and we're both agreed that next time we come up we're coming here! Thank you for the great food and service!

Google
I love this place so much, it is genuinely my favorite place to eat. It makes me so happy and I'm just so passionate about their food it makes me want to cry. 10/10 ❤️ I love this place so much and I'm so passionate about their tacos ❤️😭 My comfort food for real 🙏🙏

My parents recently passed away, this was their favorite restaurant. I just moved back to Michigan and I also enjoy this restaurant very much. Just wanted to leave a review in honor of them 💛

Yelp
Angelina's Mexican restaurant of Southgate located on Eureka Road by Trenton Street So I'm a big fan of all the food I've ever devoured at Angelina's but they definitely had me at their fresh made, so good you feel happy and fulfilled Mexican food for the soul, great service, and the best salsa Downriver. An added bonus is that their prices are very reasonable for the quality and amount of food that you get. So at the suggestion of the staff, I decided to try a new entrée, a limited special called Pastor Tacos served in three soft corn tortillas. The flavor of everything with of course, lime juice and their salsa on it plus the tenderness of the pork is now one of my new favorite dishes to throw in my rotation when I go there. I had never had such a innovative way to drink your alcohol without having the need for a glass with the salt or sugar on the rim. This Strawberry Jarrito's mixed the Tajin and Chamoy with tequila, pineapple, juice, and triple side is smooth, sweet and refreshing!

Yelp
Absolutely love this restaurant! Got dinner last night with some friends for a double date. queso for appetizers and fajitas for entre with a bunch of extras cause I couldn't settle on just one lol. This restaurant never disappoints me. We sat outside and still had speedy service from an awesome waitress (wish i remember her name so I could write it in) If your reading reviews and considering this spot, try them out see for yourself that it's delicious and filling!

Yelp
The food here is fantastic! The salsa is fresh and has a good kick if you get the hot one. The service is fast, the staff is friendly, and the ambiance is fun and festive. Love to eat here.

Yelp
i always go to this location and have never had a bad experience, but today i got such wonderful service, my order of shrimp tacos were accidentally made with some stuff im allergic to, so i had to call and tell them, and tbh i was very nervous to getting angry service, but everyone was so sweet especially the girl named Devyn that took my order again, they even gave me free ice cream. i'm beyond grateful to have a such a consumer caring business by my house (:

Yelp
Decent Mexican food, not southwest kind. They have good rice, I got a good variety to check them out. Great tickets, okay beans. Friendly service
google avatar

Yelp
They charge a fee to use credit cards and I am not down with that. Food was not as good as in the past. Our server was lovely.

Yelp
We go here occasionally for carryout family meals or dine-in lunch or dinner. The food has always been good and service has been mostly good, Had a couple issues with slow service, but it's not the norm. Prices are fair and family is always happy with their food.

Yelp
We came back for a second visit and was seated at a high table cushioned chairs. The establishment was well decorated in Halloween decor. My wife and I both ordered the taco salads. Hers, chicken. Mine, steak. Very tasty. But, the highlight of the evening was the Spooky Margaritas we both had. Yummy and very cool!
google avatar

Yelp
Our favorite for Mexican fare. Hot, fast, clean, and Mel is the best! Try the chicken flautas.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this place, the chips were good and fresh which is always a plus. The wait wasn't long for our food after we ordered. I will be back soon to try something different.

Yelp
My food was okay, not great. We sat at the very low stocked bar to have a drink, order and eat. There is no bartender, but we were given a designated waitress/barmaid. We had a full view of the cooks serving counter. The counter was stacked with 2 shelves of baskets containing tortilla chips. Staff walking back and forth passing where the baskets are sitting. Under the same counter is a square bus boy container for cleaning off tables and/or placing dirty dishes. My husband asked the waitress if she was aware our chips were stale. She stated they make them daily but she replaced them with warmed chips. That did not change how the chips tasted or their texture. As we were finish up our dinner my husband watch a bus boy walk by the counter, take a chip out of a basket and eat it. My husband started to tell the waitress and as he was the bus boy came by the counter and take another chip. We all seen him do it and the look on his face when he realized we seen him. He held the chip down by his side and slow walked away. My husband asked for the manager. After a second ask about a manager she finally appeared. She tried to say that because my husband had said the chip was stale maybe he was testing it for freshness. No, no that was not how that happened. The bus boy was eating out of a few baskets. Mind you these are baskets of chip that will be served to customers. These are the chips that are made every morning according to the manager and they sit in baskets all day to be served. The manager was not reacting in a manner that was appropriate. She acted like it was no big deal, almost like they do it all the time. I will never go back to this restaurant to eat. I don't want chips served to me that someone that is cleaning off tables from other people eating has been picking at. Not cleanliness practices.

Cameron N.

Yelp
Food excellent. Portions are appropriate. Service was attentive. Restaurant atmosphere was fun. I will be coming back. Menu was great. It is nice that the kids menu offered French fries instead of rice and beans.

Yelp
I finally got to try Angelina's Southgate. First time I had it was their branch over at biddle. That was way back when I was posting my reviews in Instagram. Anyways, I ordered the steak fajita which was pretty good. My hubby had the chimichanga which was a little under seasoned. Gotta scoop some guac to help it along. My sister's quesadilla is a bit bland as well. Gotta douse it with some salsa to make it pretty good. The dining area is pretty nice. Tons of wood and statues that are a nice touch. Service was impeccable too. Our server did not miss a beat. I had a great time eating here and will definitely eat here again. Thanks to my sister for convincing us to go. Btw, definitely order the guac, it's phenomenal. Thank you for reading my review. I hope this helps with your decision making experience. Enjoy your awesome yelptastic day!

Yelp
Heads up - the wet burrito is a dry burrito - unless you ask - then it comes with beef gravy... lol yes crazy and weird. But, if you ask for red sauce as is the definition of a wet burrito - they charge you $1. On principle, will pick one of the other 30 places to go next time.

Yelp
Awesome food and great service! Highly recommend the Southgate and Wyandotte locations (haven't been to the Allen Park one yet but I'm sure they're just as great). Love me some Angelina's!

Yelp
This is the newest restaurant in the chain of Angelina's Mexican Restaurants. Came in on a Monday night and it was relatively busy. I liked the décor, and feel of the restaurant. It's a lot bigger then it looks from the outside. Our server was very friendly and the service was great. I ordered the botana and my son ordered two tacos, rice and beans. Food was pretty good, but nothing over the top. Food also didn't take too long to get to the table once it was ordered also. The menu is your standard Mexican restaurant fare, and it wasn't expensive. Overall it's a nice, new restaurant, good service and good food. I'd come back here again.

Yelp
Dined in tonight and ordered Combination Dinner and Pollo Milanesa. I sent the pollo Milanesa back because the I didn't like ranchero sauce and ask for a different piece of chicken w/no sauce. The waitress returned from the kitchen w/the SAME chicken, the ranchero sauce scraped off and topped w/ new cheese. This was the first piece of chicken because I had cut two small bites from both ends before it went back to kitchen. That's a nasty & dirty kitchen move! We asked for the milanesa to be taken off the bill and we will never go back.

Yelp
This is an average non authentic Mexican restaurant, it was debatable before purchase because they are are on the pricier side for Mexican food. The portions for the price were simply not there, quality of the meat was cheaper. I've had better steak quesadillas at a Coney Island! No joke but up side people were nice and friendly the white quest was good and there guacamole was good just over priced.

Yelp
A friend and I had planned on meeting at another Mexican restaurant and upon arriving, we found out the it was closed. I did a quick search and Angelina's was about a mile away. And it was fantastic. We were seated right away. The server was efficient, friendly and knowledgeable (unfortunately, they had Pepsi products- but that's a personal preference!). The food was very good. It was several steps above the "usual" Tex-Mex. The food was fresh, well and balanced seasonings. Some places will slather your meal with sauces and Angelina's does not. I will definitely return!
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
I mean, to be fair, downriver isn't really where you would go to get real Mexican. But it's fine for what it is. I kind of feel like this is a place you would go if you were too scared to go to the real places in the city lmao
google avatar

Beth G.

Yelp
First time eating here. I had the enchiladas. They were bland and luke warm. The rice and beans that came with it were ok..but bland. Chips and salsa were good. I won't be back.

Yelp
First time here and I dont think I had enough to properly give a review. I had a Taco Salad that was pretty basic not a lot to talk about it was a nice size I only ate half of it. I ordered a Virgin drink it was ok. The service was decent and fast it's clean there and pleasant the prices are not over the top.

Nancy B.

Yelp
Our table of five were seating quickly in the window seat. Three of us ordered veggie tacos and within 10 minutes of eating were immediately sick and throwing up. Four days later I am still not feeling well. When we called the restaurant to let them know, they said no one else had called in to complain. Either their veggies were bad or they were cut in unsanitary conditions. I'm afraid unless their kitchen has a thorough cleaning, this may happen to others. Beware!

Joe B.

Yelp
Awful food. I know people rave about this place. I have no idea why. Food was worse than awful. Had no taste or flavor. I would have been better off going to Taco Bell or anywhere else other than this overpriced pathetic excuse for Mexican food.

Dale R.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Highly recommend Southgate location Great value and experience every time.

Yelp
horrible customer service!!!!!! Waited 45 minutes when told my food would be ready in 20. My food was cold I asked for a manager and she argued with my mom saying it was not cold. Did not do anything about the situation. Also was very rude. I love Angelinas food but certainly not going back to this location.

Yelp
My addiction I crave once per month know of many authentic Mexican eating spot with this on the menu, each a unique dish everyone should try. As with many Mexican dishes, regional and family variations are quite common. Usually, chilaquiles are eaten at breakfast or brunch. This makes them a popular recipe to use leftover tortillas and salsas. Chilaquiles Verdes here be unique with shredded Pollo, Cheese, Chopped Onions on the bed of Tortilla Chips bathed in Verde Salsa. Yes a downriver favorite of mine. Gringos you must branch out from Taco Hell to enjoy Mexican National Foods. We started with Queso Flambeau be Chorizo n Cheese, Double Damn Pollo Fajitas spot on delicious. Young Hailey took great care of us. Always this location has fast friendly service, super prices those lunch special be under 7 bucks. Find them on Facebook, Yelp n Google many days the 3 bucks gets you a Margarita Drink up. #angelinasmexicanrestaurant #chilaquiles #chilaquilesverdes #downriverfiendseat #cincodemayo2018 #letsguide

Yelp
Had the steak fajitas and it was wonderful. The serving size was large, came with rice and beans, tortillas. Also had the fried ice cream. It was a large serving and very good. The price was extremely affordable, especially compared to the place down the street. Definitely will be back.

Yelp
I am very disappointed in this place. My family and I have been going here for years. The food is always pretty good but the customer service is not good. I ordered carry out and waited for 40 mins to finally get my food while the hostess kept telling me just a few more mins. Finally got my food ask for a manager and he was very rude and unapologetic. First thing he said was he wasn't going to comp my order. I never asked that! I just asked him wouldn't you think it would be courteous to let me know that there was a screw up with my order and tell me it will be another half an hr or more. I guess he didn't care. I have never experienced such a bad unprofessional management.

Shannon L.

Yelp
Waited for 45 minutes for our 20 minute carry out order. We asked and they said the cook never got our order so have to wait even longer. This is the 2nd time this has happened to us. 12 people have came and gone with there carry our orders. For sure not coming back after this. Not acceptable!!!

Carrie A.

Yelp
First time diner. I had the tostados. The dinner came with 3 I added sourcream and cilantro. It also came with a side of beans and rice( I didn't have the rice as I am allergic to tomato). The tostados were very yummy. Great flavor. I ate all three. The other two people in my party both got the ground beef taco salad. Both said the flavors were good but that it was just too wet. Not sure if it was from the water when they cleaned the lettuce or grease from the beef? Maybe combo of the two. Both people said they would go back but would try something different. I will for sure go back.

Yelp
Let's call this what it really is, Tex-Mex. I've been to enough Mexican restaurants in my day to tell authentic from not. Yes the chips and salsa were good, but the food left me wishing I had gone somewhere else. Our waitress, was new, and had to ask us what kind of drink we had ordered because she had no idea what "Negra Modelo" was. She was friendly enough, I just think the training was a brief review of menu items and she was thrown to the wolves. When we got our food my chicken was really dry. They made sure it was really dead. I hate dry chicken and if you can't make it better than me, your place is off my list. The refried beans looked like they were fresh out of a can... and reheated. The rice was flavorless, which is typical for a lot of Mexican restaurants, but there was no hiding it. The review could have been a 3 star, but what drops it down to 2 for me was my wife's meal. Her burrito came wrapped in aluminum foil, and cut in half like that. I'm sorry, but an entree that cost $11 should not be presented like that. She wasn't going to pick it up and eat it like a wrap, come on. She had to peel off the foil to eat it, and get sour cream all over her hands. Maybe you think I'm being a snob, but seeing an aluminum foil cylinder flanked with orange color rice on one side and a dog food plop of beans on the other does not make your mouth water.

Yelp
Downriver doesn't have all that many Mexican restaurants, but Angelina is a good option. I have had food from another Angelina's location and was not impressed. I recently tried this location and my thoughts have changed. I think Angelina's is a great option for Mexican food in the area. Compared to other Mexican spots (especially chains like On The Boarder) the food taste fresh and "better" prepared. The portion sizes aren't the largest but the quality trumps the quantity in this case. Angelina's, this location especially, is worth a try. - Clean - Great Salsa - Try the 3 burrito plate - The inside is a bit small so you may be waiting

Yelp
Great prices and great food. The staff are friendly and service is fast. The coffee is to die for!

Yelp
My favorite Mexican restaurant! I used to go to the Wyandotte location before this opened and now I always order from here. Their beans are the best. Highly recommend the burritos.

Mallory L.

Yelp
They have some of the best salsa around!! I really love it!! I got the fajita tacos with steak and chicken. Fabulous! My sister got the botana and wasn't disappointed. My nephew didn't want Mexican and was pleasantly surprised to find one of the best cheeseburgers he'd ever eaten on their kids menu. I'm pretty sure I am going to be a regular here!!
google avatar

Jon F.

Yelp
Having been to the other Angelina's restaurants and enjoyed them, we thought we'd give this one a try since they serve alcohol. We went on Saturday afternoon, and the place was quiet, which was a bit of surprise but not a bad thing. I will start with the one thing negative - their alcohol service really felt like an after thought. My girlfriend's margarita was okay but nothing special, and my Modelo draft came to the table warm. Not just not cold, but lukewarm. I'm sorry, but if you're going to serve draft beer it needs to be chilled, otherwise don't bother. Aside from that, the service was fine and the food was good. I enjoyed the steak quesadillas and my girlfriend liked her botana (I took a tasted and liked it myself). But here's the thing - it's good, but it's not great. It isn't anything to stand out against the other local places, and Camino Real down the street beats it pretty easily. I will have to return to try some other offerings and give it a second chance, but I wasn't floored.

Sarah S.

Yelp
The food here is very good, have never been disappointed. The staff is courteous and friendly. We are always greeted immediately and we have never waited long for a table. The restaurant is clean and I like how it's decorated. Carry out orders have always gone smoothly, they never mess it up. It's nice to have an establishment that is consistent with food quality and service.
google avatar

Julie C.

Yelp
Outstanding authentic Mexican food. Their menu is reasonably priced and they have a phenomenal drink selection. I would highly recommend the steak al carbon tacos.

R H.

Yelp
Below average Mexican restaurant. Food is nothing special. Ordered Botana (closest thing they had to nachos) and not only was it not very tasty, we had to finish preparing it at home. See photos. Items were not cut up appropriately. Will not order from here again.

Mike P.

Yelp
Food very dry. Will not go back especially after staff expected tip for carry out "would you like to leave a tip cash or credit". Unprofessional.
google avatar

Brittney J.

Yelp
I had a great time here. I didn't know what to expect for my first visit here. All the employees welcomed us with a smile and a hello. My boyfriend even agrees that their customer service is amazing. I think we found our new favorite spot!
google avatar

Amy F.

Yelp
The food is always hot, tasty and fresh! Service is with a smile. Their salsa is a bit too oniony for my palate, but that's just me. They're always happy to make adjustments to items on the menu. My goto lunch/dinner is crunchy chicken tacos, and I love getting cheese on my beans. The chicken is always well seasoned and succulent! Highly recommend!

Alexcys H.

Yelp
Me and my boyfriend went about a week ago.. we waited at the table for over 5 minutes for our server.. he pretty much just asked what we wanted disappeared and came back with our food. It was bad customer service.. food was okay. Service sucks.. I been working with the public since I was 15 and always had a conversation with a customer and told them my name. And this guy just hid and didn't really see how we were..
google avatar

Claudia P.

Yelp
Was here a couple of days ago, it was busy as usual. Service was super friendly and timely. The lower review is because the food was simply not good. We ordered a variety of things, including: guacamole, queso dip, enchiladas, pollo ranchero, tacos, etc. The ingredients do not taste good-quality, or perhaps it's the lack of care in preparation. Either way, we probably won't be back in a while, if at all.
google avatar

Colleen F.

Yelp
Ok food about what you get in downriver but never quick to get your food. Don't go if ever in a hurry like say for lunch..

Kristine E.

Yelp
Hands down best Mexican restaurant downriver! I used to live in Texas and in California where the Mexican food is amazing and this is right up there with it. Love the hamburger nachos and the enchiladas. Salsa is. Wry good too! Family friendly and good service.

Jinefer P.

Yelp
This is definitely our favorite Mexican restaurant. We come here often (almost once a week) and have never received a bad meal. Their salsa and white queso are delicious! Palomas are quite tasty too. If you are looking for a great Mexican restaurant with good prices, service and outstanding food, this is the place!

Yelp
Each time Angelina's expands to another location they get better. In the former Panera location in Southgate, the newest Angelina's is as warm and welcoming as each location before and the food is still superb. I appreciate the little cultural touches all over the restaurant's decor. Their new plates and platters show a little more sophistication than your average Mexican restaurant. And the best addition is the liquor license so you can enjoy a cool margarita or cold cerveza!
