When we were planning a day out with our young granddaughter, heading to DTLA and catching a ride on the Angels Flight funicular was on my agenda. It's always on my mind to introduce her to historical venues, plus beautiful gardens, interesting architecture, natural beauty, and other neat things.
We caught a gorgeous day downtown - about 76 degrees, with all the fresh spring grasses on the Bunker Hill landscape to add visual character. We parked on Hill Street, near Grand Central Market, and headed over to the lower gate.
The program is that you pay at the top, so we entered the vintage railcar and took our seats. It was almost full with riders / tourists, and with a few more additions after us, we were off on our short ride. The ascent goes pretty quickly, so I had to scramble to catch a few photos.
Our 3 year old companion had wide eyes at the movement of the car, but she liked the experience. As soon as we got to the top, she wanted to go down and do it all over again. We had to convince her that there were things to do at the top, and that we'd be going down later.
We ended up strolling around California Plaza for a while, checking out the views, the water features, landscaping, and architecture. It was a holiday, so I'd imagine that many office workers had the day off. We mostly had the upper level plaza grounds to ourselves.
If you have a Metro TAP card, the fare is half price - such a deal! When it was time to head down to Hill Street again, I was sorry that the ride is so short.
Warning: When the car switches to its own track instead of a shared single track on the upper part of the line, it can be jerky and loud. Wasn't expecting that. We survived the surprise! There are two railcars - one going up / one going down. They share a track in the middle of the rail line, but you likely will experience passing the other car during part of the short ride so that the cars end up where they need to be at any given time.
Definitely a fun little historical activity to enjoy in DTLA.
