Yelp
I was introduced to tacos/burritos as a kid. The real OG spots EL TAURINO and KING TACO were brother companies and both of them were less than a mile away from me! We were the only non-Hispanic customers at that time since Yelp wasn't around and nobody in their right minds would venture to certain areas just for food (unlike these days). Since then, I compared every taco truck/location to El Taurino and was unfairly biased (although I usually only got burritos there).
I've tried at least 50 taco spots in my lifetime - and the 5 or so places I tried in the Valley were very disappointing. I mean it's not like the ingredients are different in different areas... but since then, I've overlooked every taco spot regardless of Yelp ratings if it was in the Valley. I'd make the drive to El Taurino, King Taco, Leo's, 8th and Ardmore, 3rd and Serrano, the two trucks right off the Western Ave 101 exit, etc for my fix thinking there would be no comparable spots outside of LA.
I decided I'd try again - Angel's Tijuana Tacos, Tacos El Venado, a birria spot, and couple others I forget the name of.
Angel's Tijuana Tacos has been on my top 3 list since the first time I tried it way back then. I have a personal checklist for taco spots (EXCEPT for El Taurino/King Taco - their BURRITOS are top tier flavor BUT skip the bunk 1 bite size tacos). First thing that's an absolute must is the pastor on a spit/trompa. The second thing I always looked for were handmade tortillas (this was very very rare). The 3rd thing was that the sauces can't be that generic watery flavorless stuff from a can. Very rarely did a spot check all 3 things off the list, and if it did, I was a regular just like I am now at Angel's.
Locations are always consistent, meat is always good quality/cooked perfectly, tortillas made by the señoras never rip, heavy handed scoops with the meat, great service. Their Asada is NEVER gritty or chopped to tiny pieces to hide the quality like a lot of places tend to do. Their PASTOR is top tier, classic on the spit (with a pineapple on the top) that they cut onto your tortilla - the slightly charred bits are FIRE. Neither of the meats ever had a gamey taste, smell, or any sign of low grade meat. One of their $2.50 tacos is equivalent to 2.5 tacos from most trucks - I eat 2 and I'm good, eat 3 and I'm FULL. They have non generic green and red sauces that are actually spicy, and their signature guac sauce (that they ran out of on this visit where I took a picture smh), radish slices, long red onions, lime slices, (and grilled onions/peppers IF you're there at the right time).
NOTE: NO SELF SERVICE FOR THEIR RAW ONIONS OR SAUCES
Only bad thing about this location is the line which can take up to 20 minutes, and there's almost always a line. Luckily the USPS parking lot is huge so you won't have trouble finding parking - unlike the other spot in NoHo where you have to sometimes sideways double park on the street.
Just take my word and try them out, you won't regret it!
