Hey, my family and I have been coming here for years, but yesterday I had one of the worst experiences. From the moment we walked in until we got to the register, we were profiled as thieves. I came with my sister, and we are a joyful bunch—but certainly not thieves.
We tried on glasses, I tried on a hat, and next thing you know, the store owner was hovering behind us, giving us the third degree. Trying to disarm the situation, I asked her where the wig caps were to show her we were here to shop, not just browse. Unfortunately, that didn’t make much of a difference.
Her employees at the register began watching us like hawks, making the entire experience uncomfortable. We didn’t do anything wrong. We weren’t disrespectful—just joyful.
This used to be my favorite hair store, but sadly, this will be my last visit. I’m tired of being racially profiled when I enter a hair store. I understand the theft issues they may face, but the solution is to sharpen your discernment—not treat every Black woman who walks in like a criminal.
We can feel the energy, ladies. We are human.
