Avant Garde Tasting Menu Restaurant Äniks Will Open in Portland - Eater Portland

"Each year, when the first rain arrives after the cherry blossoms bloom, Portland’s streets and sidewalks become coated with little white and pink flowers, soggy and wilted petals like snow. It’s a phenomenon chef Ryley Eckersley, best known in Portland for his tenure at Quaintrelle, wants to evoke at his incoming restaurant, Äniks: He steeps a chawanmushi-style custard with toasted hazelnut shells, topping it with fresh crab and little medallions of squash like flowers; he drowns it all in hazelnut dashi." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

An amazing and exquisite dining experience. Easily one of the best meals I have ever had. The tarot themed 10 course menu with even music and lighting pairing to each finely crafted dish was a fun touch. Definitely an experience that I will never forget.

One of a kind experience. This isn’t a restaurant. You are in for a journey with friends. Ten courses of thoughtful yet eccentric food that will leave you asking questions and for more. In leaving a review, it’s difficult to describe and not give away the fun. Treat yourself and go. The pairings are a must.

Aniks is a tarot-to-table unpretentious fine dining experience consisting of a tasting menu through 10 courses. It's a party and a kitchen show as the crew guides you through each dishes (and drinks, if you have chosen to participate in the pairings--which I would highly recommend). Combinations of fantastical presentation and pleasant uncertainty keeps the guests craving for more throughout the night. Don't be misled by the fine dining description--it's not a quiet and uptight experience. It's not loud either. You'll just be compelled to talk to your neighbor about the thing you just swallowed. Or you can keep to yourself and question whether you're crazy or if the lights were blue a minute ago, and now they're red. In conclusion, Ryley Eckersley is throwing a small friendsgiving multiple nights a week, so you should sign up quick before he finds a new project he wants to dedicate himself to, because this is the Portland food scene, and it really do be like that sometimes.

Wow what an incredible experience for afternoon tea! All the snacks were wonderful, especially the egg salad. Service was stellar, our server was so kind and helpful, and didn't bat an eye when we started bridgerton-style ballroom dancing in the dining room 😂💖 A lovely way to celebrate a birthday, we'll definitely be back to try the tasting menu dinner!

Super, super lovely experience with some of the best food I've had in a while. Chef Ryley is so nice as well, as are the rest of the staff. Highly recommended, and I'm going back as soon as I can!

The meal flowed very well, with subtle dishes followed by dishes with more of a punch/spice. Drink pairings are great, though be warned also very generous. ;) Chef Eckersley has created a fun environment coupled with outstanding food.

If you go for afternoon tea, make sure you receive everything on the menu and check your bill. The service was really friendly, the food was good, but we got the Royal Afternoon Tea Service for an extra $34 each, and the two half flutes of bubbly and two half eggs with salmon roe and Stilton wasn’t worth it to us. We were charged for an add-on we never received, but that was easily removed. Then I realized much later that we never got the scones as listed, which made me wonder if there was anything missing from the royal service menu. It was a nice experience, but for over $200, it wasn’t worth it.

The most fun dining experience in Portland. Great music, cool chef, and thoughtful food, and perfect bev pairings.

Yelp
Wow! An incredible experience! I will preface this buy saying that I am not a tea fan, but have many friends who love tea. This is my second tea service experience. I brought my sister here for her birthday and would come back so many times. The service is absolutely incredible - attentive but also giving us space. Very friendly! The ambiance was perfect, felt like we were in a little hidden garden in the city. The food was heavenly! The last place I went to felt like they really didn't try on the food - totally different story at ANIKS. The caviar egg is something I will dream about for months. The egg tart, pimento sandwich, amous bouche, and scones were all stars - but honestly everything was delicious. I can't wait to come back.

Yelp
We had the most amazing time celebrating my birthday, living out my little girl tea party dreams. The Amuse-Bouche were delicious. The pimento cheese and cucumber tea sandwiches had me searching for pimento cheese at the grocery store afterward, to make my own at home. The squash soup tasted like a liquid crouton and we dug it. The waiter was so sweet, and very attentive. We tried three different teas and all were soooo good, but the one that had notes of caramel and rhubarb was the group favorite. I'd happily return for another round.

Yelp
Loved ÄNIKS afternoon tea! Went when it was only 3 weeks in and it was done pretty well! The ambience is so cute and there were so many girl friends gathered there! We went for my bday and it was perfect. Choose 1 tea per person and you will be full from the sweet and savory! Free street parking.

Yelp
I think something really special is happening at this brand new spot, and you'll likely want to keep your eye on it. Chef Ryley Eckersley, known for his tenure at Quaintrelle, has taken over the Opal 28 event space. This keeps overhead and staff costs low, which is a big challenge in the restaurant industry right now. They do one seating per night. I got to join their fourth ever seating this week. Aniks (pronounced like onyx) serves an intimate 16-person tasting menu of 10 courses, focused on whatever food is fresh and in season. The chef's goal is to create dishes that are unlike anything you've tasted before. Each dish tells a story, both of Oregon's resources (the coast to the mountain to the valley) and of the chef's perspective on food and life. You get to watch most of the dishes be prepared in front of your eyes. I loved the experience. It was a lot of fun to interact with the chef and servers, and the communal dining style felt natural with good conversation. I absolutely loved the taste and ingredients of eight of the courses (and liked the other two). Since dishes will change, and some are more fun as a surprise, I won't detail each item. But I think you'll leave feeling full and satisfied. Price is $215 for the ten courses. Beverage pairing is additional and recommended. I didn't get the beverages but I was lucky enough to have a neighbor who let me smell and sip a number of them, and they are fairly exceptional. The menu will be ever-changing, and they mentioned the possibility of adding a "high tea" experience as well as their dinner service. I'd love to go back and wish this concept a lot of success!

Yelp
Anik's Restaurant in Portland offers a truly one-of-a-kind experience from the moment you step through the door until you leave. The intimate, one-table feast-style seating creates a cozy atmosphere that feels both exclusive and inviting. The restaurant's interior is beautifully decorated with flowers and candles, adding to the mysteriously romantic and elegant ambiance. The tasting menu, featuring over ten courses, is an artistic marvel. Each dish is a stunning blend of textures, colors, cultures, and techniques, making for a visually and gastronomically delightful journey. I was surprised by every single dish of this tasting menus. The welcome drink and other thoughtfully paired beverages enhance the overall dining experience. However, for a high-priced tasting menu with drink pairings, there are areas where Anik's could improve. During my visit, the restaurant was fully booked, and the chef mentioned it was the most guests they'd ever had. This may have contributed to some of the service issues I experienced. As a relatively slow eater, I found the pacing of the meal to be a bit rushed as everyone receives their dishes at the same time. Despite my efforts to eat faster, I often received the next dish while the previous one was not cleaned from my table or I was still working on my last bites, which detracted from the enjoyment of a fixed course meal where the flow of dishes is essential. Additionally, there were multiple errors in the delivery of dishes and drinks. One course was missing its drink pairing entirely just for me, and I had to request it separately, which diminished the intended experience of pairing food and wine. I also love when restaurants explain each dish and drink pairing, allowing diners to understand the ingredients and the chef's thought process. Unfortunately, because the restaurant was full and the chef gave introductions all at once, I often couldn't hear the explanations. This led to frequent discussions with my dining companions afterward to try and piece together what was said, but often we were all left in the dark about the details of the dishes and drinks. Overall, Anik's Restaurant offers an amazing and unique dining experience. I'm thrilled to see such an experimental high-end restaurant in Portland. However, attention to service details, smoother delivery, better pace management for slower eaters, and clearer dish and drink introductions would elevate the experience.

Yelp
This dinner was short of amazing. Super intimate 20 person seating with all of the attention to detail. From the welcome punch to the introduction of all the plates and wine pairings, this team is adding a new standard to the tasting menu scene in Portland. Make sure to let them know in advance of any dietary restrictions. Looking forward to dining with them again. Glad to have a new fine dining addition to Portland.

Yelp
This was an absolutely amazing experience. Everyone was in such good spirits and although you can't talk to everyone while dining it is nice to be able to interact with the other guests. We were able to chat with people we didn't sit near when we were enjoying the specialty cocktail while we waited for everyone to gather. I love that it was as true experience and not just another meal out. It was very entertaining and nice to know that with an ever changing menu you can return and it will be different. Everyone that night added the drink package and it was nice to have drinks that went with each course - highly recommend. You really got to watch everyone shine as they prepared and served this delicious food. It was definitely seafood heavy so that's important to know going in. My partner has a few things he wouldn't normally eat but in this case he didn't want to avoid anything, knowing there's a reason why all the dishes were prepared the way the were. He was not disappointed in anything he had. It was truly a great time, we didn't even realize how much time had passed. The decor and atmosphere were spot on and there's ma lot to be said for the freshness and watching your food be prepared in front of you. The colors were so vibrant and lots of flavor. Plus Chef will keep you entertained. I would highly recommend making this reservation. Sure it's great for a special occasion, but don't wait, treat yourself!

Yelp
This review is for their tea service only. Was excited to go, especially to enjoy an outdoor tea. Arrived about 2-3 minutes before our reserved time; no one was at the host station. Saw two staff on their phones in the kitchen/bar area. Waited and waited to be sat; about 7-8 minutes later, we were finally greeted. The patio space is a bit rustic but nice. We got our menus and there were about 10 teas to choose from. We noticed one item on the tea service (croquettas) was crossed out but no mention why and no substitution was made. The teas themselves were good; the food was very good. The gazpacho amuse bouche was excellent. All other items were very good--the scones being one of the highlights. There was, however, a sweet crust on the savory quiche which seemed odd--but this was the only misstep. The pastries and sandwiches were all top notch. Our primary concern was the service. The server was not very attentive and seemed to be unavailable quite a bit. At one point, a gentleman from the other table needed to use the restroom, but didn't know where it was. He went into the kitchen/bar area, but no one was there. He sort of wandered around for a while and eventually found a restroom. As far as us, we were checked in with once only after our food was delivered, and there was no offer to refill our teapots with more hot water, which we would have liked to have done. There were only two tables, including ours, that were occupied while we were there so it wasn't due to being busy. Overall, we would return for the food and tea but we would hope the service would improve. It is a new spot with a new tea service and we hope it will stay around for a long while.
