Anita's New Mexico Style Mexican Food

Since moving from the DC Metro area, I’ve lamented the absence of many of the fine restaurants in the area. One of these places is Anita’s. Their delicious New Mexican offerings always come through with vibrant flavor. And this morning’s breakfast burritos hit the spot. I’m often tempted to vary from my fave, the chorizo and egg burrito, but I seldom do. It’s hard to resist perfection wrapped in a flour tortilla. But breakfast isn’t their only claim to fame. The lunch and dinner entrees all hit the spot. I’ve been enjoying one branch or another of Anita’s for decades, and this branch keeps true to form. For price, quality of the food and service, these guys rock.

I had the Old Town Special. When it came out, I was like, “What did I order?” But it was alright. My only gripe was the amount of salt on the potatoes. That said, it was very filling for the price—an incredible deal. I actually ordered it because I saw someone post about it in their Google review. I’d absolutely recommend asking the server for a recommendation instead though—or going with one of their insanely low-priced burritos! The servers were pretty responsive and kind. When you walk in, they seat you (though your table might change later). You’re given some chips and salsa, which tasted kind of like store-bought Pace and was a bit runny. Be careful—if it's too runny, it might spill in your lap when you go in for a dip. Parking is one way so be aware and don't accidentally drive forward to get to the other side (depending on how you entered) or your car will be mad.

After hearing positive reviews, I decided to try breakfast at this restaurant. I chose the Machaca burrito, which was generously filled with beef, green onion, green chili, and eggs, all topped with melted cheese and served with a side of potatoes. It was satisfying. While the restaurant's atmosphere was pleasant, some updates could improve the overall dining experience.

Be aware that this is a new mexico style and not your average texmex with a regional specific menu. We were served toetilla chips with a very red and watery sauce. Me and my husband and I enjoyed a chicken quesilldia as a starter. When it was served, it was cut oddly. With 2/3 and 1/3 after clearly saying we would split it. I had the 1/3 for the most part. It included a red Chile sauce. All the cheese was in the middle. Very little cheses was in the quesilldia overall. It was very messy and did not hold well together needed a fork. We next each got the enchilada casserole it was good. It had good red chili sauces with a bite. The refried beans were excellent and the best part of the entre. Rice include suttle flavors with a sweetness that interacted with the bite in the red chile sauce in the enchilada. We finished off dinner with refried ice cream and ice cream with fresh churros. The ice cream was delicious and did not taste like a mass-produced ice cream with an excellent vannila faivor. The texture of the fried ice cream was soft on the inside crunchy on the outside. The churos were a nice suttle cinnamon flavor that worked well to bring out the vanilla in the ice cream. The service that was attentive without being overbearing.

I haven't been to Anita's in Fairfax in a while and I was craving their famous Breakfast Burritos. And they did not disappoint. I ordered 2 Breakfast Burritos a beef Taco and a side of Spanish Rice and everything was delicious. The server Milagro, did a great job talking with me to create my order and did a great job refilling my ice tea and water. I like the interior decorations that transported me into a cool New Mexican spot near the border...

Only reviewing about breakfast, drive through and take out. The breakfast special burritos are so good. Unfortunately I get a discount because I’m part of an organization that they give them to but it depends on the cashier that I run in to so that inconsistency is a bit annoying.

Great Mexican food. We got to the restaurant at 8pm and were told we need to finish by 9pm, which we managed to do. Servers were friendly and quick. Food was tasty. The mexican rice was delicious. Everything from the fish tacos to the enchiladas was good.

Visited this place for breakfast on Saturday. Out server recommended Machaca burrito and it was unbelievably good. The server was so friendly and she loved our two kids. The price is so affordable too. We loved it so much so we bought the $100 gift card for future use. Definitely would come back for quick breakfast or lunch. Plenty of parking and they even have a drive thru. Would love to try other dish here too.

One location of a no-frills, chain, New Mexican style restaurant It reminds me of what could be a classic Tex-Mex place, but with a New Mexico twist Menu is comprised of a wide selection of options, both classic Mexican and some more contemporary "New Mexican". Most dishes come doused in either green or red chili, which is apparently a New Mexico thing, but apparently in New Mexico they also commonly offer "Christmas style" which is both red and green chili Complimentary chips and salsa, but the salsa is pretty watered down and overall underwhelming I got a burrito covered in green salsa, and it was actually pretty good! Much better than I was expecting. My GF and my friend both enjoyed their dishes as well. Small seating area inside, but some outdoor seating as well Also have a drive through and a "to-go" order spot. I don't really understand how this works, as I don't know how quality food can be prepared fast enough for a drive-through, but I'm choosing not to think too hard about it Solid drink selection

Another great value meal at Anita's in Fairfax! Great prompt service even as the restaurant was nearly packed with customers. Where can you get a perfectly cooked steak, Mexican rice and beans (asked for now cheese or dairy) for about $20?!?! Highly recommended!

Excellent food, service, and atmosphere. Tried the chorizo con huevos. Great flavor. Comes with potatoes and tortillas. Tried the pork pupusa which is delicious. I love the sauce that comes with it. I also ordered a Sanjose burrito and the red chili posole soup to go. Had to have a couple of mojitos. Quite tasty.

After living here for half of a year, Anita is the best! We finally did a takeout dinner, and it was so fast! My husband did not even think I left the house. We placed the order online, I picked it up, and came home. All within 15 minutes. We joked that it would be quicker to order online and then go into the restaurant and pick up our food and eat there.excellent service and excellent food!

So my family worked here when I was a kid in the early 80's. My Mom started as a waitress and became manager and my Aunt was a waitress and I was a busboy. We all worked under Anita and her son Tom. It was like a time warp for me and the food brought back those memories. The green Chile around the burrito!! The front enclosed patio is new and they have a drive-thru now! It was all pavement and no businesses on either side back in the day. The food was fresh, fast, and on point. The server was great without hovering. I hear Anita's kids are at the corporate office in Vienna, sorry to have missed them but glad they're still keeping the legacy alive.

I had Anita's Combo and it was delicious!!! Born and raised in NM - this is the real deal.... Food was great! Service was excellent! Location is well decorated and clean. I will be back!!!

I enjoyed it....the food is Alright...nothing crazy, nothing special, it was just okay...amazing service though! but like what others have said..good chips not the best salsa

This past Saturday evening I decided to stop by and Anita's restaurant on route 50 coming back home I haven't dying there in years but I know that not too long ago it wasn't too impressed with the quality of food but I figured I'd give it another try I'm a long-term Washington area resident pretty much my entire life and I remember when Anita Tellez opened up the first restaurant in Vienna not the exact year but summer around there I somehow stumbled onto it but I was driving Virginia and stopped in as a newly licensed driver and I got served " the Anita " I stopped by here and there and I managed to find a living situation with a gentleman who is emotionally tied to New Mexico and Brett planning to go relocate there and he actually took me out to Anita's this was about 1984 so I'm familiar with the quality of the food back then and it was exquisite My gosh that's almost 40 years ago where did the time go I have visited this gentleman twice so I've actually had the joy of eating real New Mexico food in New Mexico On top of that my spouse has personal ties to Perú is fluent in Spanish same with my daughter my mother-in-law used to live with us and I frequently get high quality Latin American food including food stuffs that include tamales with Mesa and I frequently eat Menudo with posole so I'm quite familiar with his food I ordered the tamale dinner to go when I got home the Mesa was dry and tasteless usually when I get these homemade tamales they have pork fat in it or some kind of fat that make it moist and succulent this was not the case it was like a cheap TV dinner I also had beans and rice with it frijoles and arroz My wife took one small taste to meet you just said we can put it in the rubbish now Onward let me address the posole and beef soup I did see a little pieces of Menudo that's cow stomach but mostly what I got was very stringy but I'm gonna guess is short ribs and that I'm used to Captain spicy foods this was so overseas and I could barely taste anything else The fried dough the sopapillas or as I remember them The best part of the meal was the salsa and chips that doesn't say for very much Basically I found the food to be mediocre and poorly prepared from a culinary standpoint but well presented I will say that the tray that I got to take it in which was pressed aluminum with a paper top was very much like a Swanson TV dinner that had kind of a retro feel

Terrible service and waiters are incredibly rude. The food might be okay but the experience overall was disappointing. I wouldn't even bother going back.

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place. It has been my go to for breakfast for the last 20 years. They have the best breakfast burritos ever. Lunch and supper food is great also but nothing beats an Anita's breakfast burrito to start the day. I highly recommend using the sauce that comes with the burrito. It makes an awesome burrito even better.

Some of the best breakfast burritos around! You can get them how they come or customize one to your taste. I personally have not tried anything besides a breakfast burrito when I go but I have heard great things about their other options.

The food was good, but the service was bad. Our server put queso on our table, but we didn't know if it was free. We ate it because she wasn't checking on us. When we went to pay, the lady added the queso to our bill. We explained it was a mistake, but she was rude. We paid for it anyway. The staff is unprofessional. I went to McDonald's for a McFlurry to cheer me up.

If I could give this sad cafe a zero rating I would. Very concerning to see their dirty floors and dust in the light fixtures where you eat! Never going back there. Not certain how their sanitation is handled in the kitchen!

It makes Taco Bell seem high quality. It used to be better and it got more expensive and lower quality.

This is in our regular rotation of local restaurants. They have a pretty large menu of burritos, enchiladas, fajitas, tacos, etc. I usually get one of the burritos. Housemade chips and salsa complimentary with your meal. Friendly, fast service. Food tastes great with decent portions. They have a nice covered outdoor seating area that is pleasant on nice days.

Acceptable for drunk/hungover food. Breakfast only. Couldn't tell if my steak burrito was actually steak or ground beef or.. *other*. It needed more texture because it had more egg than anything and the potatoes (if any) were diced very small and had no resistance to them..essentially everything was mushy. Salsa tasted like red water. And to think this place is always packed when I drive by... interesting.

I cannot say enough about Anita's Breakfast Burritos. They may be simple in concept but they are light-outs every single time I order them. Whether it is the classic BB Special which has eggs, potatoes, seasoned with some delicious secret spices or the more spicy Chorizo burrito these absolutely never fail. Each burrito has the basis of the BB special but then it is up to you choose which kind you want whether that is the sausage ( my personal fav) bacon, chicken or just more potatoes. My biggest complaint is that I only discovered Anita's 2 years ago but we now get breakfast burritos regularly and pro tip... they freeze well

Can you say drool worthy? Being born and raised in NM the natural first stop for me when I moved to the Fairfax area was Anita's. Beans, papas, rice and chile are all vegan friendly. We had bean burrito plates smothered Christmas. If you don't know what 'Christmas' means I'm about to tell you. In NM there is an unofficial state question "red or green?" This refers to red or green chile. I opt for Christmas when I can't choose and I suggest you try it if you haven't been here before. Both were amazing and reminded me of home. The green however.... made me melt in my seat with how awesome it was! We will be back for breakfast burritos! They have a good sized patio and indoor dining if you prefer that. There is also a very convenient drive thru that I believe was placed for covid. The staff is very friendly. Oh! Free chips and salsa to start! The way it should be! --- I have to add this not because I read some reviews calling this "Tex-Mex." New Mexican food is its own thing and NOT to be confused with Tex mex. I'm only passionate about it because it's a culture thing.

Not sure what all the hype is about. Place looked in need of a redo. Very dark on the inside, very small. Lacked flair. Not very inviting There were tables outside under a tent with lights. Food was fair. Nothing to rave about. Ingredients seemed fresh. Server was attentive, very quiet. Certainly didn't add anything to the experience- no suggestions, no expression what so ever ! Regardless for how the place appeared. The servers/ bartenders can make or break your visit!

Pretty good option for a quick meal with good portions. Margarita was good as well. Complementary chips and salsa, a nice touch. Service was very good during our meal.

0 STARS!!!! They expect you to order a fajita dinner dish and eat it without tortillas. Called to inform them that I didn't receive tortillas for my fajitas and how could they expect me to eat my meal without tortillas. She continued on to argue and insist I was lying. I told her that I would pack everything up and take it to show them no tortillas. Made a second trip there and got tortillas. But no compensation for their screw up. That's very unacceptable customer service. Normal restaurant procedure is to make up for a mistake in some way but not here.

Ordered takeout. Had the Carne Adovada. The pork was very tender and well seasoned. The frijoles we delicious and the rice was fresh and also well seasoned. My wife ordered the chicken Super Burrito. She loved it! Would go there again definitely!

I waited by the front door for 2 minutes watching the staff talk in the kitchen area. Finally got noticed and then seated. 5 minutes later walked out after not one f the multiple staff came over. Must be my body odor? Highly recommend Dolce Vita a block away. Immediate attention and delicious food.

I love their new drive through feature! I hadn't thought of Anita's in a while, but when they emailed me a coupon for dinner, I knew I had to return! My favorite is still their legendary breakfast burrito, but their dinner was pretty good too. I got the Mr. T burrito dinner special, which comes with two chicken flautas and rice. I am a big fan of their marinated pork, the sauce is so good! I also really like their adovada burrito. We had to get some chips and salsa for good measure. I really like the saltiness and flavor of their chips, and the salsa is great because it has just enough chunks of tomato and is spicy without being overly spicy. Staff is super friendly and helpful, and they have this drive-through thing down to a science now. I saw that they have enclosed their porch in plastic covers for Covid winter (see photo). I am not sure if it is heated, but it looked like a cozy enough spot to grab a meal.

Hummmm Anitas.... all I can say is breakfast burritos. .. that's all you need to know and get lol Breakfast burritos all day long and only available for carryout is a must!

Rude. Ordered three burritos. Decided to sit on their patio and was told I couldn't because what I ordered was "to go". Keep in mind. Nobody is here. At all. Such bullshit. Won't be back. If people can't sit here (when there are zero other people around) I would suggest having a table or something for people to be at.

Cinco de Mayo makes it hard to find dinner at a Mexican restaurant. I really wanted it. Since Chuy's was over an hour wait, I had to settle elsewhere. Passing Anita's several times, I never tried it before today. And likely never will again. First off, the prices are fairly high for some mediocre to below average food. The chips and dip were just depressing. The chips tasted good but eventually it just gets to little crumbs. The salsa tasted like diluted tomato juice with a hint of cilantro and onion. I asked the server for her suggestion, and she suggested the fajitas. Okay that sounds good. A few moments later the fajitas came out. Nice presentation of them. Then I started eating. The chicken was okay, slightly dry and bland tasting, but that was the best part, after that my meal went into a steep decline. The pico de gallo that came with it was absolutely tasteless and watered down to a puddle. There's onions, everywhere in the dish. I don't think you can ask to remove them, but you certainly can't take them out yourself. The steak tasted like there was still some butter on them, and they give you like only 4 strips. The rice is almost inedible. It has no taste, it's slathered in green onion, and just ruined the whole thing. Then came the worst part. They give you a separate plate of refried beans, which look good to start. But once you eat them they are absolutely repulsive. Loaded with onion and just watery and taste disgusting. I took 3 bites before I couldn't eat anymore. I immediately asked for the check and paid the bill (don't worry I left a tip in the spirit of the holiday). A definite no for me. I'm sticking with Chuy's up the road.

I'm not sure why it took me so long to try Anita's since there's a bunch of locations, but I'm glad I finally got a chance to! My friends and I went for a fairly early morning breakfast and was surprised to see that there was already quite a crowd in the restaurant. We all got different breakfast burritos and I think they were decently sized for a good portion. I would definitely be back to try out their other menu items for lunch and dinner!

Arrived at Anita's last night after trying two other restaurants that had extremely long wait times and little staff. Was definitely worth it. Vilma was both hostess and server and worked so hard to cover the entire dining room. There were 5 tables that were all seated within ten minutes and Vilma was the only one serving us, but she hustled, smiled, and never missed a beat. Even managed to refill our water and salsa. Please try this place! The food is delicious and the service is fantastic. Will definitely go back!

Authentic Mexican-American menu options. Affordable. Friendly and welcoming service. The flavor fell short for this customer from SW USA. I recommend this spot for evening take out, but it is not a place to go out of the way for unless Taco Bell is your idea of taco night.

Place was dirty. They need an exterminator Service was terrible. Manager and employees were all seated at a table near the kitchen door. I entered but had to wait until they were finished gossiping until I was seated. Then the waiter went back to the table and didn't return so I had to go to the table with manager and ask if someone was taking my order. Staff acted like they couldn't understand English. I walked out. I recommend Guapos if you want good food, clean environment, and good service. I'll never return to this disgusting place.

I'm from San Antonio and have lived in DC for 10 years and ordered this while staying at a friends in Oakton. This is the BEST Texmex I have had outside of Texas. As soon as I saw the food I could tell it was going to be delicious because it looked like it was from my hometown. The cheese enchiladas taste like my favorite hill country Texas Mexican restaurant. Rice and beans just perfect. The ground beef tacos were amazing and tasted so fresh- tortillas also tasted homemade. Very very very good.

If you're looking for a fancy restaurant this is not the place. However the food here is great and the staff is extremely friendly and good at their job.The breakfast burritos Are amazing and whether if you're eating there or getting it to go they turn the food out extremely fast.

Take out order review BREAKFAST BURRITOS Oh my goodness these breakfast burritos are on point. My BIL came home with these one morning, and I didn't get to eat it til the afternoon, but they were still so good. They were so good that I went back later in the afternoon and got some more to eat fresh. All the burritos come with eggs, potatoes, and a red chile sauce inside. I recommend the Big Guy: that comes with all the above, taco meat (or chicken), and queso. So very good. And their breakfast burritos are ALL DAY.

Stopped here for a breakfast burrito on my way out of town. It was early morning but already packed when I got there. The drive through line was pretty quick and pick up was easy. I gave it a solid 3, but I would like to dine in next time. Maybe to improve that rating.

Slightly better than Taco Bell, slightly worse than Chuy's, a billion miles short of true Mexican (or even Tex Mex). I struggled to give them more than one star because their queso is literally cheese wiz mixed with velveeta. The enchilada and taco were decent, but not worth returning for. We dined in on a Friday evening (the place was less than 25% full). Asked for a high chair for our youngest child and literally had 3-4 employees looking right at us from the back of the room without making a move to get a high chair. I had to drag the high chair myself from the other side of the restaurant with my son in my other arm. Service is just not their strong point. The only reason I am giving 3 stars is because their breakfast tacos and burritos are great. I've had their breakfast catered at several events and it's always on point.

I ordered nachos with pinto beans instead of refried and I got this... I don't know what was complicated about my request but this makes me very upset that I payed full price and added a tip on top of that. This was the only item I ordered. I live 20 minutes away so I couldn't bear to go back. Guess I should've checked my one item before I left. But I honestly don't understand how these got so messed up.

Underwhelming bland food with VERY slow and bad service. If you want a spot with tasty food look elsewhere and the service was slower than a snail. When first seated it took our waitress over a half an hour to come back for our order after flagging down another employee. On top of that it took her 25-30 min to come back for our check ect. Patio extremely dirty and very understaffed. Overall bad experience bad service bad food don't waste your money plenty of much better Mexican restaurants nearby

My mom and i were visiting my sister, and needed a quick meal on christmas eve before we ran errands. i looked up good places near me and this place popped up. we were very surprised by how quick and amazing the food was. my sister and i both ordered the 3 tacos while my mom got the mexican pizza. Highly recommend this place. 10/10

I tried their burrito loco once and I'm hooked. Their salsa is decent, not salty like some other places I've tried. Moving from LA 20 yrs ago, I really miss having great Mexican food. My ex husband used to bring home their breakfast burrito but I wasn't impressed; however, I had a chance to sit down at this place to try out their real meal and I'm so happy I did. The burrito loco was delicious and flavorful. I ate the whole thing by myself with no regrets even tho I know it's not good for my waistline.

I have been eating at Anita's restaurants for decades. They understand southwestern chili sauces - red and green. My favorite meal here is breakfast and I get one of two things - the old town special ( eggs and pork with green chili sauce) or carne adovada (eggs and pork with red chili sauce) Their salsa is by far my favorite anywhere

Wow thinking I walked into a good experience first time coming into Anita's EVER! I ordered carry out thinking I would just leave once my food was ready, I decided to stay and sit dine in since I and two other tables were there mind you there were 11+ tables open. As I'm enjoying my burrito I am greeted by the same person who brought my burrito take out order to me as I sat at the table. She begins to explain since I ordered take out I can stay today but in future reference need to leave after ordering take out! I can understand if it was packed but like I mentioned I was one of three tables out of 20....Anita's you need to do better with your customer service. It is quite contradictory to bring me my burrito while I am sitting at a table then tell me I can't sit at the table! Customer service has been lost due to the pandemic it's actually quite sad. I walked up to the take out side and they had business papers all over the counter I had to sift through to retrieve a menu to order. YOU ALL NEED TO GET SECRET SHOPPED AND COACHED ON YOUR CUSTOMER SERVICE. You are bringing down Anita's name.

Very disappointed with breakfast burrito special. By far the worse We ever had over the past 20 plus years. It appeared to have been cooked long before we received them and there was barely any flavor. We will miss the delicious food they used to prepare.

I've been in Fairfax for several months for work and had been in the mood for some good Mexican food since I got here. At the urging of friends Zi have Anita's a try. I do realize it is New Mexican style, but having family and friends who live there and visiting sometimes several times a year I know there are some slight differences The restaurant was clean and well maintained. This is where the positives stop. Service was just ok. No one came back after food was delivered to check on me. They just brought the bill. I ordered mixed fajitas with chicken and steak. There was a $4 up charge to go from a single meat to two. You would think this meant more meat but you'd be wrong. It was delivered , Salad, beans, rice and Fajitas on one plate. While the entree was hot it was far from sizzlin. The meat amounting to 2 chicken fingers and about the same amount of steak was well cooked but the peppers and onions barely sautéed. There was no flavor. None at all I had a margarita on the rocks which turns out was a sweet mix. The chips were moderate and the sauce was nothing but heat. Still no flavor. Sad to say but if you want good Mexican skip Anita's and go to the Chuy's up the street. Sure it's a franchise but you will get more for your money and enjoy it much more Total bill, $27.49 for fajitas and a margarita that were maybe worth half that.

Lived in VA for two years and hadn't come here yet. Having lived off and on in NM for a six years I consider myself a breakfast burrito connoisseur (JK). I ordered the veggie breakfast burrito-Christmas style. It was slightly smaller than I expected but nonetheless had great flavor. The veggies created a little bit of residual water in the burrito but it wasn't bad. Hot sauce had a great flavor, for the price, you cannot beat it. Will return.

AOK plus a little extra. Bravo for solid, inexpensive fast New Mexican food served 7 days a week (and even 24 hours a day Thursday-Sunday) in a clean, festive-if dated-atmosphere. It's not a white tablecloth Oyamel-ish experience, but it's family owned, serves limitless chips and salsa, has cold beer and great breakfast options as well! Enchiladas are AOK and food is plentiful in portions. Service has always been friendly and knowledgeable with willingness to substitute on request. Food always comes out quickly--we have never waited more than 10 minutes for our meals. This location isn't as nice as the Vienna Anita's but it's clean, close by and always open when I'm craving Tex-Mex.
