An Essential Guide to Eating Your Way Through Alberta | Eater

"Chef Danny Beaulieu is a Quebec transplant, but he’s here with a very firm mission: push Canmore’s hiking-town cuisine to new culinary heights. Foie gras is a menu staple at Änkôr, as are pedigreed ingredients from both Canadian coasts. The menu changes seasonally, but recently, the house bread and butter service featured crunchy, warm sourdough served with East Coast lobster and miso butter (and some caviar for good measure). Mangalitsa pork belly (sourced from Eh Farms, the first Mangalitsa pig farm in Alberta) is dry aged, charcoal-grilled, rolled into a croquette, and served with tiny pickled clams, and scallops from the Bay of Fundy are seared and served with British Columbian side striped shrimp and smoky potatoes. Order the above a la carte, or dive into a six-course tasting adventure. Either way, Beaulieu has a knack for visuals, so expect highly expressionist (and incredibly photo-worthy) plates." - Kate Dingwall

The food was amazing! All of the components of each dish were thoughtfully picked, and our waitress did a wonderful job explaining each individual dish. My only critique and regret was choosing the 6 course tasting menu over ordering à la carte. The 6 course tasting menu essentially takes 6 dishes from the menu and divides the portion in half. If you were to order the 6 dishes individually and share them with 1 other person compared to getting the tasting menu for 2, the price goes from $270 to $196 which is a drastic price difference for the same dishes. Had I known the tasting menu would comprise of all the same dishes as the regular menu, I would have ordered à la carte. Overall, the dining experience was great and the food was amazing. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for special occasions!

We came to Ankor for our anniversary and did the 6-course tasting menu, and honestly… it was perfect. I also did the wine pairing, which was spot-on from start to finish. It even included two different sake pours, and both paired so beautifully with their courses. We started with the Cloud Line cocktail, which was such a fun, smooth way to ease into the night. Every course that followed was thoughtful and delicious. The foie gras with warm bread was insanely good, the beef tartare was super fresh with this light, airy foam, and there was a celeriac element somewhere in the middle that had such a fantastic texture. The scallop and pork course was another standout. Then came the duck, cooked exactly how you want it, and the final sweet course - kind of an apple blossom situation - was the perfect, bright finish. The staff were genuinely amazing: warm, attentive, and they made the night feel special without ever being formal or stuffy. Service was great the whole way through. All around, a truly lovely experience. Highly recommend Ankor if you’re in Canmore and want something memorable.

My partner and I tried the tasting menu last night at Ankor. I can honestly say it was best meal we have had in possibly the last year, maybe longer. Everything was absolutely perfect. I strongly encourage everyone to be open minded and give everything a try, you will be surprised. I have never liked fois gras (even once had it at a Michelin star restaurant) and last night one of the courses was a fois gras and it was absolutely stunning, i couldnt get enough. I also dont care for celariac but the celariac dish was absolutely to die for. Not a single dish we disliked or were disappointed with. Best duck i have EVER eaten. The service was also excellent. The staff were so friendly, gave local recommendations, and clearly enjoyed chatting with and making customers happy. Our waitress was Pauline and she was so sweet and made the experience amazing. At any and every opportunity she went above and beyond, even though she was new! We will be eating here every time we come to Canmore in the future. Thank you so much!!

I had the pleasure of dining here for my birthday and from the moment we arrived we were greeted by Paisley who welcomed us and seated us promptly. Ryan was our main server and he was phenomenal. We went with the 6 course tasting menu and every bite was to die for. From the amuse-bouche to the dessert, everything was prepared with such care and precision. We appreciated the service and attention to detail from the wine pairings to the food descriptions, presentations and even the pottery used for plating by a local artist. Dining here was truly a remarkable and memorable experience and we look forward to coming back again soon. Thank you to the entire staff at Ankor!

What did I just experience ?!? Every dish somehow managed to feature different, distinct flavors in each bite. So many components, yet not confusing or colliding. Warm, smooth wine parings and friendly, attentive, informed service round out the delicate feast over the evening. Your mouth with thank you.

Absolutely incredible and memorable dining experience. Very unassuming place from the outside, and you walk into an extremely welcoming, intimate, and chic atmosphere. The food is stellar. We all got the 6 course tasting menu. Exquisite complementary flavors with every dish and unique and beautiful presentation. The staff was so accommodating and attentive. This was an amazingly well curated culinary experience. The cocktails were great as well. They have a really passionate team at Ankor and we can’t wait to be back!

We hosted our wedding reception at Ankor in Canmore, and it was absolutely perfect. From start to finish, Paisley was incredible to work with — she handled all the planning and communication leading up to the event and made sure everything was perfectly set up and seamlessly executed the day of. She truly made the night effortless for us. The food was unbelievable — they created a custom menu just for our reception, and every dish was outstanding. The service team was amazing, anticipating every need without us ever having to ask. The ambiance was beautiful and exactly the vibe we wanted for our celebration. We rented out the entire restaurant, brought our own cake (which they even picked up for us!), and felt completely taken care of from beginning to end. We’d recommend Ankor for a private event in a heartbeat and can’t thank Paisley enough for all that she did for us to help us have our dream wedding! And if you’re just passing through Canmore, dining here is a must!

Nestled in the heart of Canmore, Ankor Restaurant stands out as a culinary gem whose reputation has justly earned it a place among Canada’s Top 100 Restaurants. It’s a dining experience that fuses artistry with approachability, refined without pretense, intimate yet vibrantly alive. Service: Exemplary Hospitality The service at Ankor is a study in attentiveness and warmth. Staff move with quiet precision and genuine enthusiasm, demonstrating not only deep knowledge of the menu but also an evident pride in the restaurant’s philosophy. From pairing recommendations to pacing between courses, the team delivers a level of professionalism that enhances every dish’s impact. It’s rare to encounter hospitality this consistent: both gracious and sincere without veering into formality. Ambience: Casual with Character Ankor’s design feels intentionally unassuming: minimalist, modern, and comfortable. The atmosphere invites conversation and conviviality, though at peak times, the acoustics can become a bit lively. Sound tends to rebound off the hard surfaces, sometimes making it difficult to hear a dining partner across the table. Despite that, the space retains a warmth that encourages lingering over dessert or one last glass of wine. Cuisine: Creativity on the Plate The true centerpiece of the Ankor experience is its food. Each course on the tasting menu arrives as a miniature revelation, creative yet balanced, rich in texture, and visually stunning. Flavors are layered thoughtfully, often juxtaposing local ingredients with global inspiration. There’s a harmony to each dish that speaks to disciplined technique and an adventurous palate. Every element... from plating to portioning, feels intentional. Nothing is overwrought or gimmicky; instead, each dish reveals restraint and respect for the ingredients. By the end of the tasting menu, it’s difficult not to feel that one has experienced something rare: a meal that satisfies both intellect and appetite. Final Thoughts: In a region known for its breathtaking scenery and bustling tourism, Ankor manages to stand out as a destination in itself. It embodies what makes the modern Canadian dining scene exceptional: inventive food, genuine service, and an easy grace that turns dinner into an unassuming experience worth traveling for. Verdict: A must-try in the Canmore/Banff corridor. Book in advance, bring your curiosity, and prepare to be impressed.
