What should have been a wonderful evening ended on a very disappointing note. The food was very good, especially the desserts—we enjoyed both the affogato and the crème brûlée. The table service throughout the meal was perfectly fine.
However, when we were leaving, it was raining heavily. An attendant was holding an umbrella and escorting patrons to their cabs. He assisted the women in front of us, then returned, made eye contact with us, and refused to do the same. As paying customers, this treatment was both confusing and upsetting. Has this been the norm for other black people in Brazil? As a foreigner, I wasn't sure... but everyone inside was nice so perhaps it was just this employee.
This experience at the end of the night did overshadow what had otherwise been an enjoyable meal, but I'll try not to let it bother me. C'est la vie.
