Ann Arbor’s Best Brunch Restaurants | Eater Detroit

"Quirky and colorful with a retro ’50s vibe, Anna’s House is constantly buzzing during weekend brunch hours. The breakfast burrito is a good bet, and Anna’s also offers a variety of meatless dishes, including its sweet potato and Brussels sprouts hash, and a chipotle southwest bowl with vegan sausage and cheese. To-go orders can be placed online at the restaurant’s site." - Mary Hayes Weier

My husband and I had breakfast on a weekend. It was good food, excellent service and atmosphere. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the fine food. They offer numerous varieties of breakfast items and smoothies. We had pancake combos with hash browns. I think it was a little pricey; but the experience was good. We'll go back. The cinnamon roll we took home to eat later was good. I was disappointed in the roll. We have had better.

As a gluten free person, I always wanted to try this brunch place out! When I tell you my gluten-loving friends were in heaven as much as I was, I mean it. The server marked my food as GF for my celiac which was perfect. I never had any reaction to the food here, and I plan to return again whether to sit down or take out. Speaking of eating in, the interior is the cutest 60s diner but doesn’t offer a ton of seating. I recommend joining the online waitlist. We joined it 20 minutes early and still waited another 20 at the restaurant. Still worth the wait for me! The fresh squeeze orange juice is delicous and worth the higher price than the regular orange juice. Edit: returned with a new friend and they loved the biscuits and gravy. I got the GF cinnamon roll (which they offer for your birthday) and GF Belgian waffle. Phenomenal first and second experience. Love the staff and food

Best breakfast in Okemos! Tons of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. I tried the vegan breakfast tacos and they're terrific! The service is quick and friendly and the dining area has a lively, fun, and casual vibe. I can guarantee I'll be back... probably more than once!

Google
The food is always delicious with many healthy options including vegan and vegetarian options. The pancakes are yummy! I regularly rotate between the breakfast burrito and the chicken sausage tater tot casserole. The service is prompt and friendly. Prepare to wait a while for a seat on weekend mornings and bring a sweatshirt as the space is often chilly.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ **Anna’s House** — a magical land where breakfast and lunch battle it out for my affection every time I walk through the door. Do I want crepes or a sandwich? Sweet or savory? Do I start with a cinnamon roll or end with one? (Trick question: both.) And the best part? Almost *everything* is available gluten-free. YES—gluten-free cinnamon rolls, gluten-free crepes, *gluten-free breakfast lasagna*. That’s right—breakfast. lasagna. The coffee? Always superb. The vibes? Bright, cheerful, and cozy enough to make you consider giving up your kitchen forever. I’ve visited multiple Michigan locations and haven’t been disappointed once. If you’ve got food allergies or need special accommodations, this place is like the Disneyland of dining—only with fewer crowds and more waffles. If you haven’t been yet, *run*—don’t walk. (Unless you're full. Then waddle.)

I came in on my lunch to order just one cinnamon roll since I saw it advertised here on google maps when looking at this location. Each staff member I spoke with was quiet, short and unfriendly. Everyone is walking around looking depressed… I signed the check at 12:10 and got my cinnamon roll 10 minutes later with no icing or anything on top. Not sure why it took so long but…here we are. it’s more like a cinnamon bread that tasted microwaved .

We’ve eaten at this Anna’s numerous times and always enjoyed it. Yes, there is usually a wait of 30-60 min but always worth the wait. Today was a much different story. Wait was 60 min for a table so we choose to sit at counter. Wait staff immediately approached us and took our order . 1 hr and 10 min later we got our food ! My Oder of eggs Benedict ( what I always Oder) was terrible. The eggs were so overcooked they were rubbery. The English muffin so tough I couldn’t cut it with a knife so I slipped the eggs and ham off. The ham was like jerky. And then , though I ordered their delicious American fries I received instead a white pile of undercooked hash browns which were not brown at all. When I asked for the American fries I had ordered the waitress returned 2O min later and said “ I’m sorry, you aren’t going to get them. They have to make another batch and it’s going to take awhile. “ If this had been our first time at Anna’s I’m certain we would not return again. I hope whatever issue was going on in the kitchen will be resolved the next time we go because it’s really the only good breakfast place in the area.

Google
Waw, always crowded here! You need to be patient is coming for breakfast because there is a long line. Sometimes if you lucky and you want you can get the bar seat so no need waiting in the line for table. They have a lot of choice in menu. The lavender coffee is great. Love this place vintage vibe, the service and foods is great. But a little bit pricey here, but worth it to try!

Yelp
their food and service is great! I love coming here with family. the food is so good I always have a hard time choosing what to get.

Yelp
The food is great as is the service and ambiance. HOWEVER, if you join the waitlist on Yelp! you MUST still check-in when you arrive. If you do not check-in in person, you will NEVER get a table! This should be made clear on the Yelp! page.

Yelp
Food quality is solid, if you get it. (Asked for Maple syrup for pancakes (neither served)): -$6 after asking if the undelivered food could be removed from the bill Sitting at the bar, service was surprisingly slow and reluctant. Didn't realize that sitting at the bar still needs a check-in with the hostess. Hostess appeared quickly to advise there wasn't a wait-list BUT this was the beginning of a OFF experience. Silverware needed to be asked for and had to wait a several minutes after food arrived. Even after requesting the silverware there was no urgency. Likely not going back.

Yelp
Went for breakfast on 4/13. Used "join waitlist" feature prior to arriving and it showed 13 - 28 minute wait. Wait ended up being over an hour. Meanwhile, people are walking in without having joined waitlist yet got seated sooner. I asked how does that happen? Girl at host stand said "yeah, the waitlist really isn't accurate and walk-ins don't show on there." What??? Shouldnt thr walk-ins just be added to wait list/queue? Guess not. The girl at host stand seem overwhelmed but also didn't seem like she wanted to be there. I get it, not a fun job but no sense of urgency while also having to answer phone, cleaning tables, etc. The past times I have been here it looks like they have nobody to specifically bus tables. Aside from that, line out the door and two separate tables that could seat 4 people only had one person seated at each of them meanwhile there were 5-6 open seats at the counter. I have been to plenty of places that say "sorry, these tables are for parties of two or more. I think most would understand that. While food and portion size is good, you really need to get waitlist system worked out, it is horrible!

Yelp
Breakfast here was awesome! i shared the cinnamon roll and billion dollar bacon with a friend then had the french toast (which was to die for). It wasn't too long of a wait for a saturday morning and the service was great. The restaurant was clean and adorably decorated

Yelp
We got a generous amount of delicious food for the money. Our daughter was pleased to find a lot of healthy food to choose from since she has so many allergies.

Yelp
Anna's House is a spacious and welcoming diner-type breakfast spot. We came here for weekday brunch and enjoyed ourselves. While the service and space was enjoyable, the food could be better. We ordered one of the scramble hashes and it lacked in flavor. I would come back to try something else on the menu just because I love a weekday brunch!
google avatar

Erika A.

Yelp
Stopped by during a trip for my friends wedding and it was great! I had a vegan dish with a latte and both were delicious but they have other non vegan options too. It was a busy spot but thankfully the restaurant allows you to join the waitlist in advance. Everyone was friendly and food came out fast! I highly recommend you stopping by if you're in the area
google avatar

Yelp
The food was excellent. The ambiance is always so nice with that diner feel. The service was excellent! We will come again!

Yelp
Revisited late March. I'm still not a fan of their check-in system, but our food was amazing! I lived the classic American diner feel as well as the continental taste! Highly recommend their waffles

Yelp
Was in town visiting family and took a red eye so we're hungry and looked for a place to grub. I had never been here before so the photos and higher rating jumped out at me. Got to restaurant and it's really cute inside! Decorated like 1950's. It was 8:30am and we were seated immediately though it did look pretty full inside. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. The menu is quite big and lots of options for vegetarians, vegans and the healthier side of breakfast (yay)! My hub and I ended up sharing a meal because we heard from family the portions were big and they were. Both things we ordered were quite big and tasty. I wouldn't hesitate to visit again on another trip.

Yelp
The food is good, but it isn't worth the wait. The estimate of when your table will be ready is still a joke. Sadly, you'll feel rushed once seated like we did. There are lots of breakfast options around all with excellent food and less difficulty being seated. I'd pick one of those and pass up the "experience" of Anna's House.

Kasey S.

Yelp
Anna's House has a unique menu and a great atmosphere! Well worth the wait, join the waitlist ahead of time.
google avatar

Dennis Y.

Yelp
let me start off with the food was amazing. The price point was good for the quality but not somewhere i could go vet often. the service was great and the ambiance was nice.. i would recommend this place to eat because the food was fresh, high quality, and great tasting, just know you will pay for it...

Sue H.

Yelp
My breakfast sandwich had avocado on it that was way past its prime, as it had more black on it than green. They gave a whopping $2 off a $14 meal. In addition there was lipstick on my coffee mug.
google avatar

JoAnne R.

Yelp
This place never disappoints. The service is quick, the selection is good, and the atmosphere is great. I'm disappointed that the "join wait list" through Yelp is no longer available, but we go early enough that we don't have to worry about that.

Lori M.

Yelp
Good service, good food! Vegan options are awesome. Non vegan is great also. .............

Yelp
This place has gone down hill. We just waited an hour for a couple of salads, kids pancakes and a burger. Our waitress did nothing wrong but clearly management has changed and not for the better. Portion sizes have reduced significantly. We spent $80 and my whole family left still hungry.
google avatar

Yelp
Such an adorable and bright space! Highly recommend getting "in line" online to avoid lengthy wait times but they seem to turn over tables pretty quickly. We opted for this place due to their reputation of having gluten free options. We were not disappointed as the GF offerings were extensive! I selected the GF pancake combo (not pictured as I inhaled the food prior to remembering) and the pancakes were huge, fluffy yet dense, with the perfect crispy edges! The combo came with two eggs and two meats, then we added a side of American fries to split. The American fries could have used a bit more seasoning so I added hot sauce and they were fine. Will definitely be back to try more of their gf breakfast menu and am looking forward to it!

Yelp
For once, we didn't have to wait for a table. It was a little after 9 AM on a Saturday so I was surprised. This place is normally packed anytime I come here and it did fill up pretty much soon after we get seated. The food was delicious. I had the cook's breakfast sandwich And it was stuffed with avocado. My daughter had the chicken and waffles and she said they were great. She's tried these at several different places around town so I respect her opinion. It was a busy diner atmosphere but the weight staff was friendly and seemed efficient. Our waitress was excellent.

Adam B.

Yelp
The monkey bread was fantastic! Although I got the big breakfast with scrambled eggs and French toast and only got French toast, then had to remind them that I ordered breakfast just for it to not be scrambled eggs and not even have hash browns or my toast

Keila A.

Yelp
We visit my sister every year and always go here for breakfast! Best breakfast around town. The service is great!
google avatar

Marcie S.

Yelp
At least not in regard to using the Wait List - I know other places that use it consider the wait list even as people walk in. According to the list I have was second in line though when I checked in I was told "20 minutes" and when I mentioned the wait list position, I was told the wait list does not take in consideration the people who walk in. Other places, second in line means second in line!

Jon S.

Yelp
The food was great, lots of good options. The staff work really hard. CAUTION Don't use the Yelp Wait List function because you are not really on the wait list until you check in at the desk. I waited for 1/2 hour like the Yelp app told me to and then later found out that I was not put on the waitlist until I checked in. I noticed several other patrons had the same frustrating experience. If you don't check in you will never get seated

Pat S.

Yelp
This place is amazing! Chicken and waffles the way to go!! Such a great atmosphere also!!

Jacqueline R.

Yelp
Anna's House in Okemos, MI is a family favorite. It's a place I enjoy alone, with friends, family and especially my grandchildren. I love the latte's, traditionalist breakfast, vegan options to name a few. There's a few servers that have been here during periods of time I've visited and it's remarkable to greet them as if we 'know' one another. 10/10!

Annette C.

Yelp
Worst service ever!! Waitress was useless placed order and after 45 minutes still didn't have our food paid for my coffe which was just a regular coffee $ 3.71 ridiculously priced which took her another 8 minutes to accomplish the transaction. Then gave us 2 free cinnamon roll coupons like I will ever go back after that to use. Such an awful experience
google avatar

Aija H.

Yelp
First time here at the Okemos location and the food was phenomenal. I gravitate towards restaurants that have more unusual items on the menu and not just standard fare and Anna's House fit the bill. We had the breakfast lasagna and corned beef hash eggs Benedict. Both were stellar!

blythe w.

Yelp
Great food, lots of ways to customize menu items and prompt service make this place a gem. Prices are high, however, and it often has a long wait on weekends.

Lauren F.

Yelp
We love the food and they are great with GF options. But this location in particular needs to figure out their yelp waitlist policy. I don't believe it actually did us any favors.

Gary C.

Yelp
Learned the hard way today that entering this restaurant's wait list on line still allows walk ins to enter the restaurant and join the wait list and be placed in front of those potential customers who only joined the wait list online. Waited for 45 minutes as the first customers in the online queue and inquired of the issue and were informed that there were still several people in front of me that came in much later but had priority because they were walk ins. This is contrary to all other experiences I've had with wait lists.
google avatar

Lisa D.

Yelp
Do not use yelp to make a reservation. You must physically go to the restaurant and check in or they will move you to the bottom of the list when you get to the restaurant 10 minutes prior to your estimated seating time. The food is awesome. But this experience really soured me.
google avatar

Xee L.

Yelp
Delicious food & friendly staff. Clean environment and affordable price. Busy place fcfs so go early.

Lindsey J.

Yelp
Came here on Mother's Day and it was fantastic! We got The monkey bread and it is to die for! We also got a breakfast sandwich and traditional breakfast and both were so so yummy. I also recommend getting one of their lattes! There was also a sign for fresh pressed juice and that is definitely something I will try next time. Servers were nice and food came out pretty quickly for how busy they were for Mother's Day. This is my second time here but from what I hear they are constantly busy, so be prepared to wait a while before being seated.
google avatar

Sofia Mila C.

Yelp
Great, fresh food with a very nice service. Gets busy in the am. Clean and nicely designed place.
google avatar

Jessica E.

Yelp
We put our name in. They didn't give us a time which should have been a red flag. Before arriving we tried to put our name in the online waitlist. It was closed which made us think there wasn't much of a wait. We asked if they could put 2 tables together. They stated that they reserve the big booths in the back for large parties. However when looking at the big booths there was a couple in one and 4 people in another. We had been waiting 45 minutes when another 6 top who came in after us and asked to be sat at a smaller booth with a chair at the end. They were sat. My husband asked why they were sat before us and they apologized and said you will be next. We decided to leave. Very disappointed

Yelp
Service was great.Food good. Atmosphere friendly...Parking= horrendous. Prices= high.

Tressa D.

Yelp
First of all - the service and ambiance was wonderful and the pancakes delicious. That's where the positivity ends. We waited over 45 minutes for a table. The breakfast was mediocre at best. The sausage was pre-cooked (think Brown 'n Serve.) Nothing was seasoned, or even salted (guess they wanted to hold absolutely true to the '50s theme.) All in all, breakfast was a three hour experience with very underwhelming food.

Alex W.

Yelp
I love the atmosphere here but this is my 3rd time trying Anna's house and being unsatisfied. I want to love this place given the menu looks so appetizing but the place has very mid food. This time I tried the breakfast burrito and it was beyond plain. I feel they don't use seasoning here, the salsa also tasted like water. Anyway everyone is so nice and the place is so nice just the food is very plain or something. Have given up trying this place. The American fries were good tho.

Dee M.

Yelp
We stopped in based on positive Yelp reviews. Friendly staff and our waitress did an excellent job. Food was good, however we were disappointed as the omelette was served with only toast. For the price, we expected at least larger portions. Hash browns, grits, or other potatoes are usually offered at most restaurants we have eaten at.

Brittney S.

Yelp
Waited over a hour and half ! put name online on wait list didn't realize you have to check in ? was watching waitlist & noticed several names called ! Went to host stand & wrote our name down again , & she said only be a few more minutes . then proceeded to call several more tables ! Then the kicker is a guy walks in asked how long the wait is for 7 people & she said actually I can seat you now ! I walked up said wait a minute !! how is this fair ? I guess online check in takes no priority

Marc R.

Yelp
the food was decent pretty good french toast. the service was horrible because it took the waiters a whole hour just to get a table ready while other passed by us with the same amount of people. the ambiance was horrible because it just felt like we were being left out n passed by.
google avatar

Susan L.

Yelp
The food was delicious and the atmosphere is nice. It's just that it's extremely expensive compared to other breakfast in the area.
google avatar

Craig F.

Yelp
This has been on my saved list for a while and was thrilled to have finally had chance to eat here when in town. We had the Monte Cristo and special sample platter. The breakfast potatoes were the only thing that disappointed, they were quite overdone and smelled like frying oil, but everything else was delicious. The bacon strips and loaded breakfast tots with hollandaise dipping sauce were amazing! The place was clean with cool retro decor. Great service as well.
google avatar

Martin V.

Yelp
The service good the food better and they do fresh press juice. Plus they have fresh press coffee my favorite
google avatar

Helen T.

Yelp
Great food, friendly helpful staff. I've taken visitors there several times and they were all happy!
google avatar

Frank M.

Yelp
Food was very good. Service above average. Ambiance nothing special. Somewhat pricey.
google avatar

Monica A.

Yelp
I went there with some friends at 1100 on a Wednesday and was surprised to see that the place was packed. Later, I learned that it is always busy. The menu is extensive. I wanted to order several entrees but limited myself to just one thing. Once we placed our order, the food came out quickly and was most enjoyable. I wish to make multiple visits, so I can eat my way through their menu.
google avatar

Lizet H.

Yelp
Go early, before 9 am, or you will have to wait. The food is fresh and there is much to choose from. The staff is friendly and courteous. Great place to start the morning on a weekend.
