Boston's best burritos are served at Anna's Taqueria, hands down.
Out of Anna's remaining competitors, El Pelon comes closest. Boloco, Chipotle, Maria's, Felipe's, and Qdoba don't even deserve to be in the conversation.
Anna's is the yardstick that all Boston burritos should be judged against. I've been a loyal customer for over seventeen years, having visited their Brookline, Allston, MIT, Beacon Hill, and Somerville locations over 50 times per year on average when I lived in Boston. Until a singular recent bizarre experience where my carnitas were way over-cooked, I had NEVER had a bad burrito from Anna's. That's well over 500 burritos, and only 1 miss.
I usually get my Anna's burrito with carnitas, red beans, salsa, guacamole, hot sauce, rice, and cheese. Sometimes I'll get some or all those things in a quesadilla. Their ranchero chicken is also good.
Reading other reviews, and watching people order here, I've come to realize that not everyone "gets" this place. So I've developed a few simple rules to help you during your visit to Anna's Taqueria:
#1. Do not order the tacos or bowls, which are both "meh" and should be removed from the menu. Stick to burritos and quesadillas, which Anna's is awesome at.
#2. Don't ask for lettuce and sour cream. This isn't Taco Bell. Those ingredients are extraneous and make a sloppier, less focused burrito.
#3. Don't order in Spanish unless you know Spanish. The person serving you, nor the guy behind you finds this amusing. Hurry up, I'm hungry.
#4. Understand that burritos are NOT Mexican. Don't believe me? Look it up. Abandon any ideas you have of there being a "right way" or "wrong way" to make a burrito.
Abide by these rules above and you'll enjoy your experience. Defy them, and come back and whine in a review about why this place didn't meet your expectations. :-)
