Hands down best breakfast I’ve had in years. Trifecta of cozy, welcoming and delicious. The owners are working just the two of them. 9:30am on a Saturday with 20 customers and food is coming out fast and hot. Even better is their attention to detail. Condiments provided, coffee topped off, and the insistence to take a picture of myself and my daughter to send to mom. This spot is GOATED.

Great old school/ hole in the wall/ mom and pop spot for breakfast! Besides having some generous portion breakfast, there is so much story here. The couple owners are grandparents of 4 and the great example of hard working immigrants. They came here in the early 80s. They were the 4th-owner of the place. They have been there for 38 years and still enjoying their daily routine.

There's something charming about mom and pop diners where they are the cashier, chef, dishwasher, table busser and waiter/waitress all rolled into two. At Ann's, there's nothing pretentious about the yellowing walls from the greasy food, the faded linoleum floors or the menu in binder plastic sleeves. It feels welcoming. There's no wait time like the other fancy San Francisco brunch spots. You know, the places with the flowers in the food and avocado toast. At Ann's, I was in-and-out within 30 minutes. I had their steak and eggs $17.50 + tax. The toast and hash browns were pre-buttered. I love that. The steak was perfectly cooked with good flavor. Service was excellent.

This place isn't bad it's just a little mom and pop breakfast spot on the mission. Nothing fancy just a good old-fashioned morning breakfast

*super important, they open at 7:30am- not 7:00am* This place is so quaint and for those that love a good diner feel. It was a misty and cold morning and this place has just a homey feel. I am assuming our server/cook was Ann? So sweet and kind. Everything is made to order and right in front of you. It's kind of like a makeshift version of shogun or ichibans. Prices feel refreshingly chewy considering all chaos with inflation. Totally worth the stop.

I really, REALLY enjoyed this place. Great hole in the wall diner. They kept my coffee filled and I left very full. Parking is street parking, and this is strictly cash only. The house chicken was delicious and dark meat. I will come again for sure. Took off a star because I am pretty sure I was overcharged - my bill only had the total of $23, no details, and I don't see how they got that based on what I ordered.

I love this place! To be clear, it's the opposite of fancy, complete with old linoleum flooring and countertops with cracks in them. But, it's perfectly what you'd expect of a local, mom-and-pop breakfast diner. It's Kryptonite to the SF fancy breakfast craze. It's inexpensive, dishing up large helpings of hotcakes, eggs, and hash browns, all prepared exactly like they should be. The owners are friendly and get to know the customers. It's the kind of place where someone walks in and says, "I'll have the usual." It's my new go-to place for solid American breakfast!

Classic short order breakfast shop. No frills generous potions basic fare. Everything was just as expected and well made. Felt like I traveled through a time warp. So fun to sit at the counter and watch them do their thing. I will be back!

It's been awhile since my last visit. I was in the neighborhood and had a hankering for pancakes. I finally got the man's name who works there, Victor. He greeted me and welcomed me by saying good to see you again! Food is great as usual. Unfortunately there was a drunk customer (mind you it's still morning) who left w/out paying. Gotta love SF. Anyways, check out this Mom&Pop breakfast place. Simple but good!

The service in this place is amazing! I've been visiting for quite a while and it never disappoints. It has a welcoming and very homely vibe to it, i recommend it for people who like comforting ambiance while eating. The owners? usual workers? are an elderly couple who are so so sweet and their cooking is amazing. They make your order in front of you and are very humble with offering more coffee, tea.. and it's not of extra charge, truly an affordable and genuinely good time. Me and my boyfriend went for valentine's day and it was a nice experience, i forgot my umbrella and didn't notice until 5 minutes after their closing hours but still went to knock. The older gentleman, although they had already closed, still opened the door and gave me my umbrella.. he told me he tried going after us after he noticed we left my umbrella but we were out of sight. :) Overall: good food, good price, good ambiance and very good costumer service + very hygienic and cozy

Ugh I miss this spot! The owners are so sweet, and you really get a bang for your buck here. I loved coming here for a ham and eggs breakfast, plus a cup of coffee. The owners always have a newspaper for you to read and enjoy chatting with you. Support this great local business when you're in the area - just remember to bring cash.

Best hole in the wall spot in the E. I've been going to Ann's for years, probably since middle school. I'm 29 now. This place still has the best prices and big portions! It definitely blows ihop, dennys and all those other breakfast chains right out of the water. Lisa and Victor are always so welcoming. They never skimp on their meat and their hash browns are to die for. They are cash only which is fine by me. I love putting people onto this delicious little breakfast diner. If you ever come across this place do not hesitate! You won't regret it. My go to is their #5

I recently went to this little restaurant and loved it! The French cuisine is sooo good, exactly the way I like it, and the pancakes were delicious. Definitely coming again. The owners are a couple who are so adorable and sweet. If I could give it 6 stars, I would!

Ann's has been an Excelsior institution for EVER. You're not going to see your fancy breakfasts or anything hipster. This is a down home diner run by the sweetest Vietnamese/Teochew couple ever. (Teochew people unite!!) After errands in the area I had to swing by and purchase from Ann's because I CANNOT let them be the next COVID casualty. I had the #5, which is basically a solid diner breakfast - eggs, toast. sausage or bacon, and hashbrowns. They cook their hashbrowns in a thin layer on the griddle with a nice pat of butter so it gets crispy. Yum. I also looked at the scrambles and when I was about to order the Denver, Victor himself points to the Victor and suggests I go for the one that has more. I did and it did not disappoint. Think a thin layer of egg with hella fillings. Yum again. While I was waiting, they offered me coffee or tea. Then Victor shuffles by with his "business card" and tells me the next time I come, I can call in the order in advance and he'll come outside with the food. If you know how hard parking is in the E, you know how thoughtful this is. I looked at the back of the card and it was clearly cleanly cut from a scrap paper. SO DAMN LOW TECH that it's awesome. Coming here is like being at your grandparents place for breakfast. You're going to get hit with nostalgia, have the sweetest interaction with the nicest couple (assuming you're not an asshole), and get a solid meal for a pretty affordable price. My order came out to $26 and I tipped generously. Because. You should be nice to your grandparents.

If you're walking by and blink you'll miss it. And you will be sorry. You will be sorry because the quality and flavor of the food here is amazing. All of it. Try anything! Seriously, I've had many of the items on the menu and have never been disappointed. This time around we had these: - The chicken over rice is juicy and flavorful and comes with a salad. - The pancakes are so fluffy and light, perfectly browned, and melt in your mouth. - Speaking of fluffy: the hash browns.....oh the hash browns!!! Crispy but not burned, and not soggy, Lisa puts just the right touch on them. - Hamburger steak and eggs. "Hamburger steak?" you say? It's just what it sounds like, a juicy steak assembled from seasoned ground beef and grilled to perfection with seasoned onions sautéed in butter. - Also I'd like to spend a little bullet point to remark on how on-point the over easy eggs are! Eggs are not hard, but it's astonishing how many places can't get them right. The joint is super well-known to locals and for good reason. The food is good and not too pricey, considering how much good food comes with your order. Not to mention how delicious it is. If you're looking for fancy, or are the type of reviewer that would take stars away because of the hole-in-the-wall decor, get lost! Seriously. The only thing fancy here is Lisa's outfit, because she gets dolled up to come and make awesome food for you, and she rocks it. But if you want good food without any pretense, and a sweet wife/husband team serving it up, then pull up a chair and enjoy. Because you will. Big time.

Victor and Lisa! Mom and pop for sure!!! My entire family has been coming here for years! If you're from the excelsior then you know what's up!! I'm not always a breakfast person, so my go to is the chicken steak meal with rice and salad, of course I need the dressing on everything :) the portion is just right! The chicken is marinated and seasoned well, never have I been served dry chicken either! Steamed white rice and salad covered in thousand island dressing. The combination is so delicious!! And if you're like me and love potatoes in any form, order a side of hash browns!! Lisa gets them so crispy on the outside!!

I would rate this place six stars if I could! The owners are such lovely and attentive people. The food is great and the place is clean. If anyone wants a diner vibe and great service come here!

I think I've seen this place my entire life, but I've only eaten here within the past year during COVID-19 and just wanted to keep within the neighborhood. As I expected, it is your typical greasy spoon diner, so it is really no frills decor, but it's run by a lovely couple that do everything in the restaurant. The food is generally good quality but not fancy (and that's not a criticism) yet the portions are really good and doesn't blow a big hole in your wallet. I normally have the breakfast fare, like the French toast, pancakes or omelets. Honestly, I probably wouldn't recommend as a brunch place to take folks out to impress on a weekend and have a couple of mimosas (don't worry.. they don't have any to serve), but if you're in the neighborhood and looking for a quick bite with good service and decent drip coffee, this would fit the bill.

Still continue coming here and still delicious as I remember it! Thank you Lisa and Victor for your years of serving us delicious food! Been coming to Ann's Doughnut since I was a literal child. Not sure who Ann is, but Victor and Lisa, the couple who run the joint, are my faves. We can clearly tell who wears the pants (Lisa) and Victor is an actual angel and sweetheart. This place is definitely old, rundown, no frills. The food is good, not the healthiest or maybe even cleanest. But I personally love it, can count on the taste, service and price being consistent - and I love supporting a small hole in the wall.

They are taking all the precautions to be safer during Covid, they are also open for takeout, food is just as great or even better!! Support your local businesses you won't be disappointed the food here is great!

Neighborhood classic! Last of a dying breed. Non pretentious good breakfast food from a real mom and pop diner.

You ever used to watch Maury Povich makeover shows? You know where Maury took a frumpy looking woman that wears sweat pants and had hair that hasn't seen a brush/comb in years. That's what Ann's needs. A makeover. I recently went to Jamba Juice and they recognized the need to revamp the menu and improve. When I worked at Frito-Lay they recognized in order for continued growth it required trying new things. I started going to Ann's at the age of 14, and after going today I realized not one thing has changed in 20 years! All except the prices being raised. The food isn't up to standard. Here's what we ordered: Denver Omelette: the reason I ordered this is because there are only about three omelettes to choose from. It was ok at best. Pancakes: dense and no fluff. Nothing I want my pancake to taste like. The couple that owns this place is a wonderful older couple. Hard working, salt of the earth type folks that I want to support in their business. They have been at it for 27 years, raising two boys at the same time. I have all the respect in the world for them. Great location, good service, and always very friendly. But to be honest, it's time for a makeover. A little creativity with the menu, quality assessment, and makeover of this diner would go a long way.

Ah, the neighborhood greasy spoon. Been around for years, no thrills interior, solid breakfast items. Gotta love it. If you're in Excelsior, there aren't a lot of dedicated breakfast places. Yes, there is Glaze Donut, and a lot of places do offer breakfast items, but none are like Ann's. It feels like going back in time. When I arrived for a late lunch on a Friday, I was the only one inside. The co-owner greeted me, told me to sit anywhere and offered me both the menu and the newspaper. Wow! The menu isn't huge, but offers a great selection of breakfast items - pancakes, scrambles, hash, sausage, steak. They also have burgers - which is good because Excelsior doesn't exactly have a lot of burger options with Joe's closed for years - and sandwiches. I also had a solid cup of coffee while I pondered. I was feeling like a fried sandwich, so got the veal sandwich with a side of chips. It was exactly what I wanted - fried meat on bread with mayo, lettuce and tomato. Not mind-blowing by any means, but just what I wanted. While I was munching and reading, a family of three came in who were regulars and started talking with Ann. They ordered breakfast combos, and one wanted her hash browns to be crispier; Ann obliged. Soon after them, a few others came in, all of us sitting at the counter, and the new people spoke to the male co-owner by name (I apologize for forgetting his name, but it is on the menu). So if a solid, cheap, and no thrills meal cooked to order right in front of you is what you need and you're in the area, I highly recommend Ann's. But know what you are getting into. This isn't a Griddle Fresh or Sweet Maple; this is Ann's.

Nice neighborhood diner. It's been here a long time. My go to is corned beef hash. You'll be surrounded by seniors, instead of hipsters. It's a refreshing change.

Blech. Went here last weekend based on the postive review here, and.. wow... I mean, I never though I would get nostalgic for the mediocre eats at Al's Cafe Good Food. First of all, service was surly. We were grunted to a table, and had threadbare menus shoved at us. Actually, make that 'menu', singular -- did the waiter really want us to share? Uh, yeah. Sorry, I don't read upside-down in the morning. After trying unsuccessfully to get the waiter's attention, we got up and got a second menu off the counter. Then we tried to order, only to find out that they don't make poached eggs?? WTF!? I thought this was a coffee shop. Given the choice of scrambled or over-easy, I went with scrambled. No English muffins or sourdough, either -- you'll take white or wheat ...and *like* it. We were practically the only people in the place, but for some reason our food took forever to come. When it finally materialized, it looked like a dog's breakfast. The hashbrowns were cooked in nasty artificial-tasting griddle grease, and were totally pale, cold, and underdone. The eggs, on the other hand, were rubbery and over cooked. I don't expect much from diner corned-beef hash from a can, but it should at least be heated through and preferably a little crispy (this was neither). Oh, and as for my toast? Nasty bread with cheap margarine. (--shudder--) While we were attempting to eat, a guy came in and sat at the counter, and asked for eggs with three slices of bacon, instead of the two slices listed on the menu. Waiter: "No, it comes with two." Customer: "Well, I'd like three." Waiter: "No!" Customer: "What do you mean, "No!"? I'll pay for it!" Waiter: "Get out of here!" (customer gets up, slams menu on the counter, and leaves) Waiter: "And DON'T COME BACK" (--boggle--) I felt sick most of the day after eating here. I can put up with mediocre food, as long as it's made with love. But this meal was obviously made with an extra helping of contempt. Blech.

I've come out of Yelp retirement for this review. Let's set the scene: 9:30am. I'm coming into the City from South Bay, and I've been fighting traffic for an hour. There's 30 minutes to find something simple and tasty before I meet with a class of students at a nearby high school. Google Maps. Bar. Bar. Fast food. Bar. Supermarket. Convenience Store. Ann's Doughnut Coffee Shop. Pizza. Thai....wait Doughnut Coffee Shop? My interest is piqued. 3 minute drive. Perfect. I roll down a few steep blocks and find parking in front of an assisted living facility. After the two block trek along Mission, I'm greeted by a mostly empty diner. A woman turns hashbrowns on a flat top while the pancakes rise to a golden brown. A man at the counter sips his coffee while scrolling through Instagram at eye-level. Grab a menu, find a clean comfy seat at the counter. Almost without asking, a fresh cup of coffee is in front of me. Silverware set. A portly tin pot with lid hides the whole milk. Now, doughnuts, doughnuts. Looking for some doughnuts. No doughnuts. Oh the humanity. Ann, if that is your real name, my how you've tricked me at 10:00am. My mind was set on the sweet, sharp warmth of diner coffee mixing with and dissolving the crumbly satisfaction of a potentially stale-but-better-than-nothing doughnut. Critical miss. Regroup. Get your marbles together. What looks good? One hot cake for $2.40. That's a steal. "I'll have one hot cake." "That's it?" "Yes, ma'am." The woman turns her back to me and pours a measured ladle of batter onto the flat top. The lightest sound of sizzle fades into the shuffling silence that's occassionally broken with the clang of cups and dishwasher water. A minute passes and the hot cake has grown taller with light bubbles. Looks good. She flips it. Golden brown. Another minute, she flips it again and slides it onto a plate. Next to the flat top sits a half hotel pan with a hefty load of margarine. She slops on a knife full, and it slides across the hot cake leaving a smooth, velvety residue. I dig in. I wanted to know what the pancake tasted like. A real diner pancake with salted margarine and a cup of coffee. Satisfying. She refills my cup without asking. Thank you. But, I wish she would have offered the syrup. Maybe it was for the best that she didn't. Maybe she knew something. "How much do I owe you?" "$5.00." She was milking me for an extra buck. She deserved it. "Let's call it $7." She asks me if there's anything else. I thank her and leave feeling like that was the best experience I could have had, doughnuts or not.

Ann's service was great food was amazing and good food. I got the french toast, hash browns over easy eggs and toast. It was not expensive and very friendly. Thank you Ann we will be back.

I got nothing against diners. Some of my best friends are diners. This is not that diner. If you lived within walking distance, I can maybe see stopping in for breakfast... No, actually, I can't. There were more chemicals than actual food in our meals. The hashbrowns and the corned beef hash were barely cooked, and everything was covered in margarine. I have nothing against grease, but wherever you live, you probably have a diner closer to you that's better than Ann's.

Wow, I can't believe no one has given this place a review. If you are not afraid of oil and butter go here for breakfast. Huge portions, great prices and great food. The scrambles are amazing(the big scramble is my favorite), good french toast and burgers only they do not serve french fries they do have great hash browns(nice and crispy)! Fast friendly service. The best part is that it is an open kitchen so you can watch your food being cooked! Not and upscale place but great when you are hung over and need a big breakfast. Coffee is good for a small coffee shop too! Too bad they close early around 3pm.

Hole in the wall, extremely easy to miss spot. Ann's is a small place with, I believe, less than 20 seats. Husband and wife team who serve and cook for you. My bf introduced me to this place for a BIG breakfast and he wasn't joking about it! We usually order the corned beef hash with over-easy egg, and hashbrown. The breakfast specials also come with coffee with free refills or oj, and choice of toast. I also tried the pork chop breakfast and it was pretty good too, but I prefer the corned beef hash better. The portion is really big and I usually couldn't finish my meal. If you're not afraid of oil and not watching your figures, go to Ann's and get an EXTREMELY satisfying breakfast. Perfect hangover food :D

I love going to this place. Hash browns are excellent, the place is clean, and best of all: zero hipsters. Regular Excelsior folk eat here, and 1 Bernal guy too! Yeah, the service is not Commander's Palace, but you must kidding yourself if you want to be waited upon hand-n-foot. I eat here regularly!

Very bare bones - not a neuron of brain power has been spent on decor, amenities, upgrading, style, nada. Not an ounce of irony in the xeroxed menus or gritty bathroom. This place just is. Mom and Pop will be working - and no one else. Your food will be greasy. You will probably eat breakfast, old school breakfast. You will hear at least 3 languages other than English. You will leave with a full stomach. I go back to Ann's a few times a year when I want just that experience.

I went here for the first time today. I kept passing this place by since It's called a Doughnut and Sandwich shop. They should really put breakfast on their sign, since that is what they specialize in. The couple that run the joint are really nice and friendly. I've heard that they have been running the place for over twenty-five years. I had the #5 which is two eggs (any style), four strips of bacon or four breakfast sausages, hash browns and toast (with coffee). It is a lot of food, but I was expecting to pay less than $7.50 since it's such a hole-in-the-wall. Over easy eggs were ok (kind of greasy), the bacon seemed kind of fake (I'm not positive if it's soy), the sourdough toast was fine, but I'm not a fan of margarine. The coffee is regular diner fare. I may come back, because there are no other breakfast spots in the Excelsior that I know of. The couple is so nice that I want to give Ann's a good rating. I want to spend my money at this mom and pop shop, but the place is in desperate need of a makeover. Updating the menu would help too. It's not a place I'd recommend to my roommate who happens to be very picky.

The one plus is that they give you lots of bacon. Otherwise, the food quality is very low and the prices are steep. Everything is old and dirty. Clearly the owners spare every expense. They don't even serve french fries though they have hamburgers. Why can't we get a good diner in Excelsior...like Art's in Inner Sunset?

It all starts when you look at the sign outside.... What an experience, seriously, take a seat and enjoy the ride. Pork chops are greasy as f&$k, hoodies are velvet and gold lamme, and f$&@s haven't been given since 1982. Plus the art. The f&$king art. And Shirley is on point behind the counter. Remember: The chicken fried steak is beef. This place is seriously amazing. Everything soaking in grease just waiting for your taste buds and hungover belly to enjoy. (Not kidding.) Enjoy just as much as I did and will be doing for the rest of my life. Eat here or you haven't lived.

I have lived in Central America for a few years, so I feel comfortable saying I know the third world/developing nation vibe. This place is that exactly. The full on immigrant experience. That being said they make a decent breakfast. You are not going to get anything fancy, or better than ok, but after all this is the excelsior and there really isn't anything great here to begin with. This place is a diner run by a sweet couple that seemingly know what they are doing regardless of the fact they seemingly don't realize they are doing it in spoiled San Francisco. The idea of ambiance (playing music, having pictures/art on the walls, a coat of paint) is non existent, just like most third world environments. But it's the only breakfast spot in the area so it will do.

It's great to see businesses like Ann's survive during a time where big money businesses are pushing everyone out. Ann's is an excellent breakfast place that's been serving the people of the Excelsior district for years. The Victor special is my personal fav and the prices are really reasonable. If your in the Excelsior district during the AM come by Ann's for a tasty breakfast!

Went here for breakfast for the fist time today, only because my boyfriend and I were hungry and we were in the neighborhood and he said he used to go here all the time....it's definitely a hole in the wall there's a couple of tables lined against the wall, and also the counter top diner alongside the kitchen.. everything on the menu was cheap, simple, but a lot of options..i personally like diners like this because you can see them cook your food right infront of you. I had the chicken steak plate that came with 2 eggs, hash browns, and toast which was actually quite delightful.. a little oily towards the end =/ He had the corned beef hash only because he orders that for breakfast at every breakfast spot we go to, just to compare... I had a little taste and thought it was just okay..it did need a little salt and pepper... the only thing I would complain about is the service... my bf asked for sourdough bread with no butter.. but when our food came out, the server put the bread on it.. my bf mentioned that he said no butter, and the server kinda disregarded it and said, "well, i didn't hear you" and kind of walked away..but then came back and asked if he really wanted to change it, but at that point we just didn't want to bother with it anymore.... i ended up eating the bread anyway! and it was awesome!!

Good basic breakfast. Diner style. Owners have been at it for years and are friendly. Glad they're making hotcakes on a well seasoned grilled. That and bacon is all I need some weekend mornings.

I want to like this place but it needs some serious refresh. Like others pointed out, time stood still for this place. The food is basically a Chinese interpretation of American diner food, grease included. I ordered the chicken fried steak but there was no deep fryer so they fried it on the griddle. I thought they forgot the gravy, but I guess they never realized sausage gravy was part of the chicken fried steak experience. Overall, the place is OK but I would not go out of my way to come here. There are better place you can go and spend the same money for better food. Kate's Kitchen is one of my go to.

My friend just showed me this place recently and dang I'll definitely be going back. I had the Italian Sausage breakfast, served with fresh hashbrowns, eggs, and toast, talk about a homestyle cooked meal. I had my warm cup of joe on the side and I was set. Service was friendly and we were choppin it up with the owners before we left, they were very welcoming people. The food is made right then and there and the portions are hearty! I'm getting hungry thinking about it right now. Next time I'm looking for breakfast I'll know what to hit up.

Awaking from Markus Schultz's four and a half hour set, I needed eats ASAP. Ann's had been lingering in my mind since passing by it the other day - looked like a cheap greasy spoon, perfect when I'm starved post dancing and trying to save on the funds. I knew I was going to like this place when I saw the sign for chicken noodles soup (yep, plural), and the guy behind the counter handed me the paper. A good start. They made up egg whites no problem, and dished it up with some toast in record time. I believe it was less than three minutes from my order till I was eating. Perfect. Grabbed a salad to go, handed over less than $10 including a generous tip. Ann's was exactly what I was looking for.
