Aggro-Tourism: 12 Hotels for Blowing Off Steam

"At the Machrie, on the isle of Islay, you can get back to the roots of the game and play it the way it was meant to be played: man versus nature and the elements, over rough and tumble ground, all on foot." - Mark Fedeli

Aggro-Tourism: 12 Hotels for Blowing Off Steam

"Don’t ever let anyone tell you that golf isn’t a physically taxing activity. In Scotland, where nary a golf cart can be found, it most certainly is. Your typical over-manicured golf resort gives the sport a bad name — but at the Machrie, on the isle of Islay, you can get back to the roots of the game and play it the way it was meant to be played: man versus nature and the elements, over rough and tumble ground, all on foot." - Mark Fedeli

Good Golf Is An Adventure Sport

"Golf purists will recognize the appeal of a trip to Islay rests not on a hotel, but on the Machrie Links, a fabled Willie Campbell course that dates back to 1891, and is basically the epitome of everything championed above." - Mark Fedeli

"Golf purists will recognize the appeal of a trip to Islay, in the Inner Hebrides rests not on a hotel, but on the Machrie Links, a Willie Campbell course that dates back to 1891. As long as you’re there, though, it certainly helps that the hotel is as impressive as it is. The Machrie is hotelier Gordon Campbell Gray’s first hotel in Scotland, and it’s everything you’d expect it to be — fantastically luxurious but impeccably tasteful about it, and historically aware but never old-fashioned. Even non-golfers will appreciate the dramatic landscapes and the extensive wellness offerings, and the restaurant, with its panoramic sea views, serves upscale locally sourced fare." - Tablet Hotels

The Macherie is one of the most beautiful hotels experience we’ve ever had mostly due to its unbelievable beautiful location. Yes the hotel is quite nice , the rooms are cozy and nicely appointed. The restaurant is top notch but nothing comes close to the spectacular setting it’s located on . The Hotels finest achievement IMO is the “Stagg Lounge” one the greatest spaces you can spend time in , having a cocktail, afternoon tea or simply staring endlessly out the massive window onto the beautiful golf course and surrounding countryside and beaches .

We had a very happy few days staying here. Some members of the family stayed in a hotel room while others stayed in a lodge. All the rooms were lovely with stunning views over the golf course. The lodge worked really well giving us some living space altogether. The lodge was very well equipped and had everything you needed for a special stay. The hotel is in a perfect setting with a walk down to the beach. The hot tub, sauna and ice bath were enjoyed too. The breakfasts were delicious and all the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. Thank you Barry for looking after us so well. We had breakfast in the hotel and it was enjoyed by all. The hotel was the perfect location for trips to Port Ellen and some amazing distilleries. We would definitely recommend and will be back.

Fantastic hotel, beautifully decorated. Very good restaurant and spaces to relax, drink etc. Golf course is fantastic with good choices of tees - which you may need depending on wind strength! Beach is amazing - our dog loved it and the views are beautiful. It takes time to get here but well worth it.

Wonderful hotel with lots to do. The short walk onto such a lovely beach with nobody else there, was wonderful. The hotel team were all super helpful and we were very well looked after. Lots of fresh fish and seafood available at lunch and dinner, which is right up my street. ||The only down side is not being there for long enough.

Visited for the day to play the golf course, and what a course it is. Amazing setting, great design and excellent condition. Played on a sunny day with just enough wind to keep it interesting. ||Warm welcome at reception, and especially in the pro shop. Lots of chat about the course, the facilities and a suggestion for a stop on the way back to the ferry.||One quibble. We went in for breakfast and the manager (?) said to the waitress, lodly and rather disparagingly, "couple of walk- ins!!" Actually, no, two visiting golfers, who would appreciate breakfast after an early start! Not very polite. Additionally, as you have a fixed price for breakfast, why not say so? Otherwise, just a bagel and coffee is rather expensive! Although it was jolly nice.||Lovely surroundings, restaurant experience wasn't very welcoming, but overall, pleased we'd made the journey.

this place was beautiful I would defiantly recommend.. but there was just something missing, mabye the service and the people skills , and the food was mediocre at best. send steak back inedible and they dont care. and lady at breakfast was awful also. so I would def recommend but dont go for the food or the personality go for the golf.

The golf was amazing. The course is fun, beautiful and challenging. It had everything I would want in a classic Scottish links course. I the hotel looked nice but we were there for the golf and whiskey. With the weather we had it hard not to have fun. There literally was a rainbow on the clubhouse/hotel

Stayed at this hotel while on Islay for two days. The hotel is very nice and kept up. The bed and pillow situation could use some attention. The bed was quite lumpy and the pillows were a down alternative which means they look great when plumped, but you lay on them and they go razor thin. For people who need any type of support from pillows, this is a challenge. Regardless, the room was nicely appointed, mini fridge, iron, and complimentary tea. The bathroom was spacious and had a shower/bath combo. The shower was narrow, so if you are wider, you could have issues fitting. You absolutely cannot shave legs, I had to sit down and shave as if in a bath. The restaurant for dinner is quite pricey (even for an eatery in a hotel), but the food was good. Just be prepared for a hefty tab. We were a little disappointed with the lack of outdoor seating options - there is a patio option off the restaurant, but no casual non-dinning outdoor areas were available. There was a courtyard, but the patio furniture was all stacked away. The grounds are beautiful and the artwork through the hotel is quite captivating. This hotel is not near any of the larger towns, so be prepared to drive a bit, and stores have unreliable hours. We were in Port Ellen on a Monday and looking for lunch options. Even though the hours online said establishments were open, they were not. We ended up getting sandwiches from the local Co-Op. In all, this hotel is very nice, and we had a lovely time adventuring around Islay.
