"Asheville-founded, woman-owned, award-winning Chemist Spirits’ swanky turn-of-the-century bar Antidote has the cure for the boring mocktail. The NA G&T with Maine pine syrup, lemon, grapefruit, Fever Tree elderflower tonic, and fresh rosemary has been touted as the most spirited, non-spirited cocktail in town. In warm weather, quaff it on the rooftop bar." - Kay West

"The gin doesn’t flow far from the tree at this cavernous, three-story vintage apothecary-themed lounge and rooftop bar. Rose, barrel-rested, and navy-strength gin — all distilled next door at Chemist Spirits by mother-and-daughter co-owners Debbie Word and Danielle Donaldson— inspire the menu. The gimlet and Bee’s Knees are choice selections, but there are also fun rum and tequila drinks, plus more experimental options like the garden martini, which uses olive-oil washed gin infused with fresh tomato." - Laura Hackett

The distillery and cocktail room is truly charming, with a beautifully curated decor that creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. The attention to detail in the design enhances the overall experience, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a drink. I was also impressed by the fantastic selection of merchandise available; there's so much to choose from, and I can't wait to take some unique items home as keepsakes. Overall, it's a delightful place that combines great aesthetics with a wonderful shopping experience!

Google
What a fantastic place! Loved the creativity of the drinks, and they kept that trend going with their non-alcoholic beverages as well. Lots of creative seating, lovely rooftop, and amazing staff. I will totally be going back to keep exploring! Note that we didn't eat here and only stopped for the beverages as I love the older classic cocktails, so this was a destination for that one goal. Totally hit the nail on the head. But THEN I see the tasting room next door, but that's another review and you should really go to both. Wow! Easily my favorite places in Ashville!

Google
A really lovely cocktail bar. Very delicious drinks and the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to stay for hours. Vintage, stylish, cozy. If you’re a party of two, I highly recommend sitting at the little nook to enjoy your drinks. The drinks are a bit pricier than what I’ve seen at other places around Asheville but for the atmosphere and the quality I’d say they’re worth it

Google
Antidote at Chemist Spirits is a cool bar with a unique early 1900s vibe that transports you back in time. The creative drinks are well-crafted and a pleasure to try. The staff is friendly and adds to the welcoming atmosphere. It's a great spot to relax and enjoy a few drinks with friends.

Stopped by for a late night drink before closing. The atmosphere of the bar is great. The drinks were strong yet easy to drink. Bartenders were kind and fun too. It was an overall great experience for a quick trip. Definitely will be back!

A fun stop and neat atmosphere. The espresso martini was superb. Great customer service and old school vibes.

We visited after leaving another bar with sad drinks. Antidote was the LITERAL ANTIDOTE. an awesome curated space, with a well-crafted cocktail menu and impressive spirit offerings. My husband and I have been in the bar industry for years, and are passionate about craft cocktails, so we often have a high bar. This place impressed us!! Service was outstanding, it's clear their bartenders know their stuff. Happy with the cocktails we got, both on and off-menu. The bartender at Sierra Nevada recommended this place to us, and I'm so glad we went! Really made our evening. 10/10 will recommend

Google
My favorite bar in Asheville. The cocktails are delectable, and we always struggle picking a table inside or outside because both atmospheres are stellar. I recommend the gin and tonic with the Biltmore rose garden gin made in house/next door at Chemist Spirits.

Yelp
We were walking down the street to a brewery when I backtracked and was like "wait a second, do you think this spot is pet friendly?" And indeed it was! My brother in law is a gin fanatic, so this was one of the highlights of our trip as they are mostly gin based. The outside patio space is absolutely beautiful and has so many plants, flowers, and shrubs enclosed in a black iron fence making it feel like a garden, but you're right off the main road. My only qualm is that the seats around the big barrel table we sat at were too small in surface area to fully sit on and thus the chair kept digging into the backs of my thighs. That was rather uncomfortable since I was wearing a dress, so eventually I decided to stand at the table, which was perfectly fine because of the height of it. They do have other seating areas outside, but that table is what best accommodated us and our 3 dogs. Just something to be aware of if you have some curves and are planning to enjoy your time here outside with multiple pets. My brother in law ordered a gin tasting flight, which we all tried a little sip of as well. The chocolate orange gin was crazy- it was so good, didn't taste like alcohol at all, and is not a pairing that I would ever expect with gin, but it was so good. I ordered The 1532 and it was out of this world. The curry paired so nicely, but wasn't overpowering, and the coconut on top was like an extra little snack with my drink. My husband ordered the Sierra Leone and the herbal infusion came through really nicely- it reminded me of an herbal lemonade our favorite coffee shop in Indy makes where the sage really brightens it up. My sister ordered the Ms. Pickle-Tini and it was savory in the best way, with a little pickle garnish. We also ordered a bowl of olives to snack on at the table and they were great. I don't usually like olives, but these were very fresh and their house marinade on them was delightful. We went inside to use the bathroom before leaving and to close out our tab and it is really swanky inside, almost a speakeasy vibe. The lights were dimmed and the decor was extravagant. I loved everything about it. I would love to come back and be able to sit inside without the dogs to experience both atmospheres.

Morgan S.

Yelp
This place has the perfect speakeasy cocktail vibe. We were greeted with yummy drinks and good music. OAXACA OLD FASHIONED: Smokey, balanced, delicious twist on a classic We would have stayed for more but the music stopped early in the afternoon.

Sarah E B.

Yelp
Amazing atmosphere that makes you feel like you traveled back in time to a Southern speakeasy! We couldn't stop taking it all in! Eclectic spins on timeless prohibition styled cocktails. I went for a delicious dry cider while my husband tried a navy style gin cocktail. We were both very impressed! The staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful while being very proud and knowledgeable of their product. Amazing to find out it is mother and daughter owned and operated! We even went next door to the Chemist to see where all of the distillery magic happens! We loved doing the tasting and brought home the delicious chocolate-orange liquor and the barrel aged gin. So excited to make some fun creations of our own! We came by during the day, but I'm sure this place is intoxicating at night!

Ronald B.

Yelp
Loved this place. Cool ambience, helpful and interesting people, I enjoyed the drink recipes and bespoke liquor options

Mary K.

Yelp
Great gin cocktails, using the Chemist Gin. Has nice outdoor space. You place your order at the bar, no wait staff providing service here.

Eileen B.

Yelp
This bar is a gem in Asheville is a speakeasy with mostly gin drinks. The staff is friendly and full of info about the drinks. The decor is so pretty and inviting. Come in for a cocktail

Meagan S.

Yelp
Antidote came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. Although there was plenty of available seating, there was a warm, speak easy vibe. The cocktails were delicious and the menu had options for everyone from simple to distinguished pallets.

Madison T.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful experience here. The drinks were delicious, atmosphere was decadent, and seating areas were filled with intricate and unique decor. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Asheville. The bartender and host were very friendly and informative.

Leah C.

Yelp
I almost hate to tell everyone just how amazing this place is because I want to keep it to myself but gatekeeping is wrong... so here's the skinny, this place is INCREDIBLE at making cocktails, seriously it's amazing. I'm already obsessed with chemist so I should have only expected greatness from their beautiful bar. The staff are so nice and helpful. It's a really cozy spot whilst also being rather big! Enjoy!

Kimberly R.

Yelp
Loved the vibes of this cocktail bar in downtown Asheville. My husband and I stopped in right before dinner at Cultura next door. The ambiance was of a classy speakeasy with a well-crafted cocktail menu. I loved all the different sitting areas and the medicinal theme throughout. We ordered the charcuterie board, and 2 cocktails. The cocktails were tasty and the jam and goat cheese on the board was delicious. Great spot which I enjoyed thoroughly!

Michael E.

Yelp
... they say a long time ago ASHEVILLE was called the Paris of the south.... This establishment definitely keep that spirit alive. Located in the south slope. The chemist is a refreshing change from all the beer floating around a very well stocked bar, excellent drinks, selections, and even some live music certain days of the week. Makes this place have a look and feel that you might find somewhere in Europe. A great date place, so I tend to find the only really romantic place is the upper deck area above the bar other than that it's a little open an exposed, not much privacy, except for the little cubby to the right of the bar that has two chairs. All in all great place, staff, drinks, and vibe

Rebecca H.

Yelp
We were in Asheville for a weekend away and I'm a sucker for a speakeasy. I've found that I like Prohibition era cocktails after visiting the Prohibition Museum in Savannah. So I asked if they could make me one called a Mary Pickford - which was not on their menu. The person taking my order asked and they gladly told me yes. I was overjoyed as it is hard to find places that will even attempt to make this specific drink. My best friend had their Dad Jokes cocktail and enjoyed it. Then we each had the Strawberry Fields cocktail and some chocolate from a local chocolate maker (and it was amazing). We were seated at this tiny 2 top table outside and it was super cute! While waiting, I went next door to their "gift shop" called The Chemist. I did a tasting of their brand of gin. I ended up purchasing a bottle of their single malt pecan cream liqueur. The ambiance of Antidote was very much early 1900's. I absolutely LOVED it! I hope to go back again next time I visit Asheville. Also, bonus - it's woman owned!

Kelly O.

Yelp
Great outdoor space with fireplace! Interesting, creative cocktails. A must, if you are in Asheville!

Salma C.

Yelp
The most interesting, coolest ambiance bar I've been in. I like the concept of a 1900s ish themed bar with a chemist-apothecary like theme at the bar. The first two floors have a low key, speakeasy vibe while the rooftop bar has a more modern look with cute decorations and furniture. The rooftop bar has a different menu. On the rooftop I tried the Rosy Revelry drink. It was sweet and slightly potent; anything with rose in it I have to try. An attractive and tasty drink. My ultimate favorite drink was the Strawberry Fields. It's unique with the incorporation of Hojicha Tea and a vegan egg white. It was fruity and sweet. Honestly a must get for sweet drink lovers. It was so good I wanted a second one of it. A fun place to bring a date or friends. My partner and I sat on the second floor enjoying our drinks while playing a game of checkers. It's a must for high quality, unique cocktails with beautiful rooftop scenery and unique speakeasy vibes.

Ava G.

Yelp
BEAUTIFUL BAR! I loved this bar, it is 3 stories high with seating on all levels including their rooftop area and front patio. There is a fireplace and cozy blankets available to keep you warm up on the rooftop. The drink menu has a lot of interesting specialty cocktails. This place is absolutely beautifully decorated and perfect for photo ops. I'll definitely be retuning and this is a great spot to bring someone if you want to impress them! There is street parking located right by the bar, and many parking garages close by.

Allison M.

Yelp
What an absolute fire of a cocktail bar. Highly recommend the spot. Like super highly. Upon entering, the Houst was pleasantly surprised that I was a local. It was adorable. She really engaged with us and made us feel welcome. They didn't seem to be a table at the rooftop but that's what we wanted. She let us head on up because it wasn't too busy. Lo and behold there was a spot of top! We did grab a table- we got lucky! Lots of the tables had really fluffy blankets on them, because there was still a little chill in the air. Classy. This was a perfect view, as if he came dusk. As you can see, the rooftop view was beautiful. The drinks are not cheap, but they are very well crafted. They have really good mixers and alcohols. It feels like the bartenders are happy and genuinely enjoy their craft. I was going to order something fancy but the bartender and I decided I should just go with my usual the Manhattan. Really glad he suggested that because I was on the fence, but ultimately very happy. And no judgment from him. It was a delightful Manhattan.

E W.

Yelp
Antidote is a classy, quiet place to grab well crafted drinks in downtown Asheville. The drinks were tasty, had unique names, a fair amount of alcohol and flavor, and reasonably priced. The exterior is well groomed with an upscale, antique feel. The service is fast and efficient without bothering you. The Vesper Martini was strong but not too strong, I've previously had Vesper's at other bars where the drink might as well have been multiple shots poured together. The Navy G&T was the same, well rounded and tasteful. I'd definitely go back to Antidote.

Donna M.

Yelp
I just wanted a drink to wind down one night and it was late to boot! I found this quaint place that reminded me of a speakeasy, with plenty of well staged seating areas. It was warm and welcoming with a robust drink menu, and things to choose from, Past to present. The bartender was a dear and quite attentive. I told him what I liked and he fixed me two wonderful cocktails, which I enjoyed immensely. I'll be back!

Renee C.

Yelp
Tried to pop in on Friday night, but it was packed. Came back Sunday for presumed drinks and snagged a great spot. Fall drink menu was great so we had a hard time deciding! Loved what I ordered. Overall nice vibe, stellar cocktails.

Jolie F.

Yelp
What a cool place to stumble into while enjoying downtown ashville! The place oozes with coolness from tasting room to cocktail area. On the premise, there is a sampling shop where you can do distillery tasting of their products! Also various cocktail accessories can be purchased here! The shop atmosphere is super cute like you are stepping back in time to a shop! Afterwards enjoy a professional cocktail; all alcohol bases can be had! There's a book of common and unique cocktails. And like the store, the atmosphere is super cool! Sooooo stop in for a drink!

Chris B.

Yelp
Nostalgic charm with an old pharmacy theme. Cocktail variety is prime with more than enough choices. As I said the place has an old pharmacy theme with many old pharmaceutical bottles around. Take a peek at the bartender, that may be old Mr Gower behind the bar mixing and compounding.

Cherie T.

Yelp
Chemist Spirits' Antidote bar has a cool antique interior, extensive cocktail menu, and charming speakeasy atmosphere. The rooftop is home to a colorful Fever-Tree Botanical Bar with gorgeous views (see pic). The artisanal cocktails are absolutely delightful, so much so that we woke up the next day with well-deserved hangovers, but no regrets.

Tricia B.

Yelp
Great place to spend a rainy afternoon in Asheville. Delicious cocktails. Friendly service. Sit at the bar and watch the magic happen.

Gabrielle Z.

Yelp
This is a go-to place for cocktails for me when I am visiting. I think they have a nice array of spirits in their cocktails as well as a range of flavors to please everyone. Their seasonal creations are super tasty! The decor inside gives off antique library/speakeasy vibes and the outside has some seating with heaters and fire pits in the colder weather. This place tends to have a line at peak times and the bar can get kind of backed up (you'll wait a little for each cocktail if you're sitting down at a table ordering). Overall, highly recommend!

Susan S.

Yelp
Wonderful place. Very cool atmosphere! The drinks are quite good and innovative! The liquors that are made there are fabulous! Fun place to see and experience. NOTE: It is a lower key atmosphere than others along Coxe Ave. We are locals and sometimes we appreciate a calm place.

Monica R.

Yelp
Great unique and standard drinks in a laid back atmosphere. I had a specialty drink and my husband had an old fashioned

Dawn C.

Yelp
Wow! What a beautiful concept for a bar. The drinks are creative and different. They have their gin and feature it prominently on the menu. There are many other liquor options, too, so don't get worried!! The bar snacks are in generous portions. The charcuterie board had so much cheese! It filled up fast when we visited on a Saturday in October. So get there early or expect to wait. This is a very special bar. It's a not to be missed experience.

Nisha C.

Yelp
After passing this bar so many times over the last few years, we finally had the time to visit this place over the most recent rainy & gloomy MDW. We initially were seated at a table, but noticed a little table in a cornered space from the corner of our eyes. We requested to move to that table, and they let us move! It was a super cute little corner with 3 of the sides blocked of by a wall (right next to the cashier). Super cute!! Anyways, we each ordered 2 drinks here: Strawberry Fields, Crime of Passion, and Morning Bloom and all of them were fantastic. After some time, we ordered a charcuterie board which we devoured. We spent about 2 hours here & really had a blast. Has beautiful 20s-60s speakeasy vibes - I would 100% recommend this spot!

Monica F.

Yelp
This chic bar offers some of the most unique specialty cocktails I've ever tasted. After visiting Antidote for the first time last November and loving the drinks, I couldn't wait to come back and visit. This place was #1 on my list to go to. The menu is extremely detailed and they have something for everyone! They even have specialized mocktails that sound absolutely delicious. The cocktails have a complex flavor experience, in the best way possible. The menu also includes the tasting notes of each cocktail which is very helpful in figuring out which cocktail you want. The strawberry field cocktail was sweet, fruity, and refreshing. It's made with chemist spirits American gin, aperol, strawberry, hojicha tea, lemon, and vegan egg white. Loved this cocktail and would definitely order it again! My boyfriend got the bad habit, which had a smoky taste to it. He really enjoyed it as well! Can't wait to come back here when we are in Asheville again!

Maiken S.

Yelp
This is probably our favorite cocktail bar in Asheville, it has unique and hand crafted options which we love but the knowledgeable bartenders can also you make your classics and favorites. I love an aviation, it's a floral gin based cocktail and not a lot of places know the recipe by heart - or have the ingredients for it - but antidote had both which always earns extra stars in my book! The live music on the patio was great too, do yourself a favor and go check it out!

Crystal T.

Yelp
Delicious drinks and thoughtful, moody decor. Antidote at Chemist Spirits is Asheville's unexpected treasure.

Courtney Z.

Yelp
Antidote was one of the only places we found open on a Sunday night so we swung by for a few cocktails before retiring for the night. I love the ambiance of this place. Prohibition era, very moody, and quiet. The bartenders were friendly and the drinks are delicious.

Will V.

Yelp
An impeccable cocktail bar. Ive been to many, and this one does everything perfectly. Their interior decoration efforts alone are incredible, but their drink offerings are exemplary as well. If you're in Asheville and are a fan of cocktails, you'd be remiss to miss it.

Brooke H.

Yelp
This might be my new favorite cocktail bar! The decor and atmosphere are so clever and well done. It looks like an old time store, complete with an antique register. Antique apothecary items, like pill bottles and chemistry sets, are spread throughout. My gin & tonic was lovely to look at and very refreshing.

Virginia S.

Yelp
This is one hard working crew! It's Mardi Gras day and the staff hasn't missed a beat! This bar is lovely, busy or quiet. The rooftop adds another dimension. I definitely include Antidote on my "places to take guests" list.

Steph H.

Yelp
I'm a gin lover so this place was like the mother land for me. Not only is the place just stunning, so so much to look at & design inspo for days- but their cocktail options are amazing. Literally something for any palette. They had a limited drink with black tea and some peach component that was creative and delicious. We also tried another drink but I cannot remember the name. I would just highly recommend this place for a quick, or not-so-quick stop. Lovely!

Hunter J.

Yelp
Not a gin drinker but Chemist is really good. They have a lot of other options if you want something besides gin.

Megan M.

Yelp
Great service, efficient, will recommend something if you aren't sure what you want, really creative drinks, great shop next door to buy gin to take home too.

Adam G.

Yelp
If you're looking for a unique place with apothecary vibes, Antidote is your place! We stopped in for a drink after receiving multiple recommendations. The place is cozy on the inside, with several nooks and different seating arrangements (including rocking chairs!). The drinks are pretty pricey, but it is a neat place to stop in with a small group of friends or a date night!

Maura C.

Yelp
The drinks were really good!! I would say the service left something to be desired. Staff was a bit rude at the bar, specifically when ordering drinks and then trying to give them an idea of where our table was. If there is confusion, especially when it's so busy, maybe allow ordering from tables with the QR code. Overall we would be back though due to the quality of the drinks.

Jamie S.

Yelp
A great cocktail bar with unique ambiance and decor inside and a nice courtyard out front. They pay serious attention to their cocktails and we've never had a bad one there. Any of their gin cocktails are highly recommended. Service is always prompt and courteous.

Kathy V.

Yelp
The last time I was in Asheville...liquor laws were weird and cocktail bars were like membership-required private clubs for "reasons," or something...so I was utterly delighted on my most recent visit (Labor Day weekend 2022) to find that somethings had changed! We were waiting for some folks to make it to town before dinner next door at the Funkatorium, when I realized that Chemist Spirits, which I had spied as a distillery a couple years before, now ALSO had a cocktail bar. Count me IN! The outdoor patio seating area was especially inviting, but on this first night we opted to sit inside. Count me DOUBLY pleased to discover that they specialize in gin! Yum! We tried a couple different cocktails and I was thoroughly impressed with the crafting of them, the flavors, and the presentation. And the decor was cozy and cool. We left and I was eager to return, posthaste. So a couple days later when a larger group was looking for a spot in between two brewery stops, I eagerly requested that we stop back at Antidote! They were all game, and holy wow did we have a blast of a great time! It was a bit rainy and super busy inside, but with the tables closest to the entry outside, we were mostly covered from the drizzle and were able to enjoy ourselves without much of a wait. The cocktails are beautiful and delicious. As with most fancy bar spots, it is not cheap. But it is a great time! Highly recommend a visit here!

Joanna M.

Yelp
Chill atmosphere. Great bartenders. The decor is cool. Parking is street parking, good luck. I had the Biltmore.

Felicia C.

Yelp
We stopped in Asheville for couple days and just happened upon Antidote. The exterior of the building was enough to lure us in for a drink. We sat at the bar at first. Great selection of seasonal craft drinks. I'm horribly indecisive. No problem here-the staff did a quick taste profile for my preferences and made the perfect selection. I know this can be annoying for staff but I appreciated the efforts greatly. Pro tip: GO ON WEDNESDAY! As we were sitting at the bar, music began to fill the space. On the second floor, Posey Royale were performing swing-era jazz. I could subtly feel the string bass in my chest. We found a nook upstairs near them so we could listen and watch guests causally dance and sway to the music. We even snuck in a couple games of chess. It was simply a beautiful experience, environment, and drink. Top moment for us in Asheville.

Sheryl B.

Yelp
We passed by earlier to take a self-guided tour and were impressed so we came back. We love the atmosphere and service. I'm sharing a photo of my delicious "dessert-like" drink. Perfect for the end of the night.

Alex E.

Yelp
Not my favorite. I know everyone loves this place, but it's just not for me. The interior is so, SO cool. LOVE the attention to detail! And that's where it ends for me. The drinks were on the expensive side, the wait (outside in the cold) was long, and the place was so darn LOUD I couldn't hear across the table. And the deciding vote- I wasn't impressed with my cocktail at all. I won't be returning.

Lorraine M.

Yelp
Definitely very busy! Plan for that especially in the cold. If you decide to wait outside for a table inside make sure to follow up with the hostess as we were told they would come get us and we eventually went to ask and mentioned they forgot. TOTALLY understand it was slammed. Drinks were good! Love the atmosphere. Very cool upstairs as well. Just have to go up and down to get new drinks!

Hannah D.

Yelp
This is a swanky and great cocktail bar. There are multiple levels all with different feels. The bartenders are great at what they do. Personally, I recommend the rooftop bar.

Luis V.

Yelp
We came a little early but were able to try samples of their gin and whiskey next door. Loved the different cocktails they provided, each with a unique twist. I absolutely loved the speakeasy feel of the place and the second floor was decorated beautifully. The staff was very knowledgeable and was friendly, helping us choose a place to sit since it was our first time. It's a great way to try some of their spirits as cocktails. They serve some small bites as well. This location is 21 and up only so they will ID you at the door. There's some good breweries close by as well. If you like speakeasy feels and unique drinks, this is the place for you.
