Where to Find the Best King Cakes in New Orleans This Carnival Season

"With locations in Gretna and Metairie, Antoine’s Famous Cakes is a locals favorite for king cakes, equally for the “queen cake,” which is stuffed and topped with all sorts of flavors and goodies. Choose from a host of versions and fillings for in-store pickup at either location, order online, or call to have them shipped." - Beth D'Addono, Clair Lorell

New Orleans’s Best Cake Shops

"For old-school sheet cakes and round cakes, Antoine’s in Gretna is a longtime favorite and New Orleans classic. Create a custom white, yellow, or devil’s food chocolate cake with a handful of fillings (like pineapple, strawberry, lemon, or buttercream) and top it with either butter cream or chocolate butter cream icing. For its “gourmet” varieties, Antoine’s also offers doberge, German chocolate, carrot cake, red velvet, and more." - Clair Lorell

Google
I used to vouch for this place. I’ve been to NOLA 3 times and I guess 3rd times the charm. Because I waited 30 minutes for two orders of their glazed beignets. What’s more, is they didn’t communicate with each other. I was waiting in the heat only to find out the cook had left. They told me to come back with my receipt next time and that they’d give me my order then. I come back and wait another 15 minutes. Unbelievable. Not only was it NOT a “Hey, we’re sorry about last time, here’s some extra beignets”. They basically said thanks for waiting 45 minutes for beignets you paid $10 for that you can’t get a refund for.

Google
If you’re looking for a sweet potato pie, you should try Antoine’s in Gretna! It’s not the sweet potato pie that I’m accustomed to as far as how it’s prepared (based on how it look), baked, and the taste but it’s close enough. The customer service is always top tier! It’s inexpensive, to me and meets my need for the most part! I don’t live on the West Bank so it would be nice if they answer the phone before I drive ‘cross the river!! Reason being, two separate times that I went, it was closed! However, check them out!

Been patronizing this place for many, many years, but unfortunately over my last couple visits everything has gone down hill. Got a king cake last year, worst I’ve ever had. My favorite has always been the buttermilk drops and I get them every time I go, hands down the best. Not anymore. They were SO DRY, misshapen, and had barely any icing. It looked like whoever made them did not care at all. Some were normal size, others looked like bite size. The lady waiting on me was also not very friendly. You’d think with as much as I paid for these buttermilk drops that they’d be so tasty, but they failed miserably. I won’t be back. So sad.

Google
Now I’m gone fore warn ya if ya looking for smiles and friendly faces not likely to happen here BUT if you looking for some great better than good QUEEN CAKES AND BEIGNETS they won’t let ya down at all i drive from Baton Rouge to get these all the time

Google
Antoine’s is simply one of the best bakeries in New Orleans - and that’s year-round, not just for king cakes! The Chantilly cake is incredible… it’s all incredible.

Google
Not only is this the BEST king cake I’ve ever had (and I’ve literally had ALL the big names), their customer service is unmatched (I went to the Gretna location)! I online ordered a traditional king cake for pick up about 4 days ahead of time and when I arrived, it was ready and waiting for me! I drove out of state 1.5 hours to get their king cake too! They had a wonderful employee, Kala (I hope I’m spelling it correctly), who was not only checking people out, but also going out to the line to update customers! I also wanted a Queen cake that I was unable to order online like the other, but y’all, this bakery literally took my order while I was in line and BAKED IT! Now yes, I had to wait a while, BUT, if you’re familiar with most big king cake establishments, once they’re out, they’re just out. Doesn’t matter how long you’ve been in line, how far you came, none of that. But at Antoine’s, Kala literally wrote down the name of each person in line by 6:00 pm (closing time) and what king cake type and size they wanted, baked it, and assured everyone in that line received one! I’ve NEVER seen anything like it! I think there had been a bit of a hold up because a vendor in a big van picked up a TON of King cakes, but I was literally blown away that not one person in that line by closing time was turned away and told they were just sold out for the day. I left the most impressed and will definitely be back!

Google
I purchased a red and white cake, I had the lady write Happy Birthday for a male. She brought the cake out with the name and HBD in pink! She was like that's all she had, I told her she should have asked and the cake was for a male, hence the name!

Google
Havent been here in a while because last time the glazed beignets were burnt. I decided to give them a visit this past Saturday and was highly disappointed again. I ordered at 9:44 am and received the glazed beignets at 10:01am which again was burnt but soft. Extra greasy wnd sugary. They had maybe two cars ahead of me so Im not sure why it took so long. I am officially done wasting money with this business

Yelp
This place is just divine! I went in to get a cake and left with a reminder of a childhood memory. Antoine's is known for its glazed beignets, which are good, but it's the other sweet treats that make this bakery worth visiting time and time again. Until next time...
google avatar

Yelp
I love Antoine's! The glazed beignets are the best in Nola. You go inside order and go back out to wait for your order. This ensures they are hot and fresh. I love the flowers and the seating outside but I wish they had more parking but that's part of the charm. I'll be back for a king and queen cake during Mardi Gras!
google avatar

Shane P.

Yelp
Glazed beignets are delicious! Lobby area inside/ordering proceds is a little unorganized, but not too bad.
google avatar

Omotore E.

Yelp
While their pastries are really good their service is not worth the hassle. I order 1 simple other of glazed benigets. It took an hour to get the order. Wish I was lying. After inquiring about the order they continued to say 10 more mins. It is not worth the stressed there are other spots in New Orleans and surroundings with glazed treats and much much better service.
google avatar

Marian M.

Yelp
I had tried to buy pastries during Mardi Gras season and failed. Now I understand why. During Mardi Gras, they focus on king cakes and Mardi Gras delicacies. So I felt lucky to drop in pre-Mardi Gras and grab a pound cake loaf that was moist, nutty, and absolutely delicious. I saw a slice of German chocolate and grabbed that also. My favorite type of cake and it was also perfect.

Yelp
I have no words for these glazed beignets! They are amazing. They bring them out hot and ready! My daughter describes them as a Shipley donut and a powdered beignet having a baby!!! They literally melt in your mouth. The parking is good. The facility is nice. The customer service is mehhhh... But I will be back regardless!!
google avatar

Beryl D.

Yelp
Love coming here for the glazed beignets and other delicious goodness. The service here is great and quick. The store ambience is pretty chill. Quiet. I love their sweet potato pies as well as there is a sugar glaze on top.
google avatar

Rosalee C.

Yelp
The glazed beignets are amazing. So light, fluffy, and still warm because they are made to order. 1 order is 3, so I'll have to come back to try the powdered sugar version since I can't eat 6 at once. The shop and staff were pretty busy, and it wasn't clear where the line to order was, but that's just part of the experience! No seating inside, but there's a few patio chairs and tables outside with sun umbrellas. Looking forward to coming back!

Yelp
Now you can't go to New Orleans and NOT get some beignets!! My friend told me he was taking me to try "glazed beignets" i was like "oh they have them glazed too!" walking in we were greeted by a very pleasant lady smiling. She was so sweet! The store was clean and smelled delicious.. We ordered our beignets and she told us they would bring them to our car! The anticipation for these thangs! Y'all they were so hot and fresh.. we got a half of dozen.. and i didn't want to be greedy in front of my friend but i could've eaten EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM! i would definitely recommend! You get 5 stars for your great customer service & hot fresh glazed beignets! I'll be back!
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Very impressed with the attention to detail and effort put into my custom cake! And it was delicious and affordable, although a little on the sweet side. Will definitely order from again.

Yelp
Found out about this spot on YouTube, turned out to be a great find. I'm not big on sweets but when it's this good it's hard to pass up. The hot glazed beignets are a must when in New Orleans. The key is to eat ''em fresh and hot, add a cup of coffee and you're good to go. These are my favorite beignets in all of NOLA. The Queen cake is super popular here, if you see one on the shelf, you better grab one quick. The Queen cake was pretty good, these come with a plastic baby inside, not sure but I think the person that gets the baby will be having a child, ‍

Yelp
Every year I come here to get a birthday cake it's a issue, the customer service is horrible the workers always seem to have a attitude on top or the fact that I placed a order two weeks ahead of my birthday and they still tried to give me a whole different cake ane didn't want to fix the issue saying there decorators left for the day until I asked for a refund now all of a sudden they can fix the issue. The cake is still very ugly and a waste of $50 why take preorders if you can't fulfill the actual orders and your workers don't even respect the customers when there dead wrong on top of trying to go back and charge people more because your workers forgot to do that when the order is placed and not paying attention to anythint people are saying just fighting anything on the paper. Baby if I could give yall a 0 I would they don't even go over which each gold look like or nothing just try to sale you bullshit

Whitney D.

Yelp
I can still taste these glaze covered beignets. We did pickup so I can't attest for the service but the beignets came out hot, fresh, and delicious. The consistency is a perfect mix of flaky and doughy combined. The wait was also short on a weekday afternoon.

Ryan B.

Yelp
Excellent king cake, excellent glazed beignets, good coffee, very friendly people. I highly recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
It's glaze beignets baby! The glazed beignets are soft little pillows of heaven. I recommend eating them hot when they come out but if you get home any cooled off put them in microwave for 5 seconds and get the same experience. They have other things like the sweet potato pie with the praline crust on top now that's at the Metairie location. They also have a hand pie sweet potato pie which is divine. But this review is about the glaze beignets. One order consists of three beignets. I suggest you get two because you will need at least 6 beignets to fully be satisfied. The customer service is great. Once you order your beignets inside you take your receipt. Go outside and it will bring them to you in your car. Can't beat that kind of service. Inside it's a baker it Smells of deliciousness. Lots of cakes and pies and cookies that'll have your mouth watering. This isn't even my first time going just my first time getting a review. I recommend checking it out

Yelp
Antoine's is my favorite, "Go To', King Cake store! Their King Cake's taste & texture/being moist is as good as any I have tried over the decades. They are well protected in the box they come in which makes shipping easy & safe. The counter people I have encountered are normally nice, helpful, proactive in thought & deed, efficiently provide the requested King Cakes and check people out quickly so the lines move fast. Antoine's is near the GNO so East Bankers should not fear the bridge!

Yelp
We ordered a custom cake for our daughter's sweet 16 ball. One of the cake decorators took our order and she was sweet and personable. We provided a picture of a cake we found on the internet to use as inspiration. The cake was delivered to the hall while we were decorating. After taking a break 20 minutes later, we inspected the cake and noticed some parts were really pretty, but the cake had a gangsta lean and several layers were bleeding through the frosting like a rustic cake. Considering we paid over $400, including delivery, this was not acceptable. My mother-in-law went to the bakery to complain and request that they make it right. The owner, Gregory Antoine, initially balked her request. He went as far as saying the cake wasn't leaning when it was delivered. He initially offered to just fix the frosting. After further pressure was applied, he agreed to prepare a new cake. The new cake was delivered within hours and before the ball started. He also allowed us to keep the original cake after he had sent workers to pick it up. The cakes were delicious! Even better than the sliced cake that you can buy in the store.

Yelp
Some local friends took me to this bakery as I needed to get some King cakes to take home to KY. This was the place they said was the best for King or Queen cakes. Let me tell you it did not disappoint. I have had king cakes in the past and didn't even swallow due to texture and taste just not being it! These here, babbbbbbyyy let me tell you. I was lickin my lips and swingin my hips because my mouth was so happy. They were soft and gooey and buttery. My family tore these up soon as I got home. I had to go back the next weekend to grab more. Lol, well technically I went for Mardi Gras but you get the picture. Antoine's will not disappoint so if you're in the area definitely stop there.

Yelp
OK think I've found my fav King or should I say Queen Cake! This cake melts in your mouth! The icing is a bit sweet but not overly. The lady in bakery was helpful explains sizes and what was available without placing an order. The bakery is clean and all pastries are displayed nicely. The next time I'll have to try some glazed beignets too.
google avatar

Billie M.

Yelp
Your taste buds will definitely do the happy food dance for visiting here. Literally the best beignets that I have ever had! I was happy to be able to get a queen cake and try all the different flavors.
google avatar

Brittany S.

Yelp
Glazed beignets are a game changer. I've been wanting to try them for years and I'm glad I did. Great bakery with extremely efficient employees. While handling a room full of customers, the workers were taking phone calls and online orders like professionals! Efficient and delicious at Antione's.

Kayren B.

Yelp
10-Star Original Plain King Cake‼ Recipe, taste, texture, icing that I remember from the 1980s at the original Randazzo's in Chalmette. What can I say? King Cake Done Right‼ They even have the line of customers out the door, just like Randazzo's had for so many years. They offer Filled, and even all fillings in one cake if you want to try them all by ordering the 'Queen Cake.' But I'm traditional all the way.
google avatar

Devaneé T.

Yelp
These were glazed and delicious! Black owned. Friendly staff & quick service! Owner is amazing!! Family-like Ambiance!
google avatar

Jennifer K.

Yelp
I have to give 5 star because I didn't wait and I got a hot fresh medium king cake on a Friday afternoon during carnival season and the service was great. I would only rate it lower based on personal preference on king cakes which is all subjective. They did everything right, I just like a little sweeter icing and prefer some other king cakes over this one but for those who are not as much of a sweet tooth as me, this will be perfect for you!!
google avatar

Shanita F.

Yelp
The glazed beignets are the best thing I've ever had here, and is the vest in the Greater New Orleans area! They are dangerously good and you can easily eat four of these in a matter of minutes. As you (should) already know, beignets are best paired with chocolate milk or hot chocolate. They definitely sell chocolate milk, but I don't know about the hot chocolate. *note, they don't have very much parking space, so you may have to park on the curb/down the streets. It's fine because we can all use the extra steps after enjoying their sweets and pastries! Also, there's usually a line and a wait. It's worth it though!
google avatar

Yelp
I needed a birthday cake for my daughter's birthday, so I called Antoine's several times and left messages. No one seemed to answer. Once I had a moment, I drove to Antoine's and stated that I needed to place an order. Apparently, other folks placed last minute orders that didn't seem to work out for the baker. Not sure how that affects me as I'm trying to proactively place an order at least 4 days in advance. Nonetheless, if you need something, in advance, go to a bakery "other than" Antoine's.

Yelp
Deeeee-lush-us! (Delicious) Came for an order of their famous glazed beignets and they were fresh, hot and delicious. Must try if you're in NO and want a break from the traditional powdered beignets. I prefer the glazed.
google avatar

Anthony B.

Yelp
Google said they were open and they were not and we came all the way from across the river for them to be closed at 10:40 in the morning

Debra B.

Yelp
Best king cake! They are as always friendly If you live on the West Bank of location is very convenient

Yelp
My sister and I were headed back to ATL and planned to make a stop at Antoine's at the referral of our Uber driver. We arrived on Mon AM at 6:00. The staff was just getting in. She rudely said "We are just getting in and running behind. It will take some time to heat the oil and get started cooking". I explained to the cashier (who was training someone) that it was my first time there and asked to order 2 dozen glazed beignets (for the office). She said, "Again!!" and repeated herself. My sister KINDLY told her that she was coming across very rude. She said she has been told that before. I asked how long would we need to wait and her response was "I don't know". We left and called back about an hour later since we had not headed back to ATL. I asked if the beignets were ready yet. Now, she tell me they must be pre-ordered. I asked if I had to come in to pre-order. She continue to be rude. I explained to her that we were the ones who came in at 6AM and yhat she was STILL being rude and I terminated the conversation because I didn't like where it was taking me. In the meantime, fast forward, my sister received a callback from the owner this evening who apologized and advised the situation would be handled. I wish I'd gotten this woman's name because no one should ever hire her for customer service. We will give Antoine's another try when we return in a few weeks. I'm giving 3 stars instead of 1 because the manager/owner turned a negative into a positive.

Yelp
Absolutely deliciousHome of the decadent Queen Cake...apple and cream cheese are our faves. The buttermilk drops are heavenly the best in the world.. hands down and slap the table 10X. Glazed and light beignets too.
google avatar

Yelp
Please pop in and do yourself a favor- treat yourself to some hot glazed beignets! This place is absolutely amazing. The service is always warm and friendly. Whenever I'm in town, this is a must go.

Yelp

Yelp
Best king cakes you'll ever taste!!! But they go quickly so make sure you get there soon as they open

Roxanne ..

Yelp
For years now during the Mardi Gras season my family has always purchased the delicious Randazzo's king cakes from Antoine's. I also buy extra to ship them around the country to family and friends. Unfortunately, this year I bought a large plain king cake that was not it's usually fluffy taste. I don't know if something has changed in the recipe or if there is a new cook. The cake was very dense, heavy and way too much cinnamon. these cakes are not cheap and I was very disappointed.
google avatar

Teira R.

Yelp
If I end up on My 600lb Life, it's gonna be because of this place. I've been twice and buy more than I need. I am in LOVE with the glazed beignets and the sweet potato pie. I don't eat pralines at all but I even devoured the praline covered sweet potato pie. Every bite of Antoine's baked goods is like a piece of Heaven. I recommend any and everyone to come and try them out!

Christina K.

Yelp
All of their food is amazing but they are so FICKLE with their hours of operations and not knowing when they do and don't sell there amazing beignets. Wish they were a lot more on point with that. And every time I call, I have to call several times to get a answer. Please work on this. We love your business but the guessing game gets old.
google avatar

Gabriel D.

Yelp
Tried the glazed beignets today, and let me tell you, they were to die for!! Highly recommend trying them if you're ever in the Gretna area.
google avatar

Candice B.

Yelp
If you haven't tried the glazed beignets your doing yourself a disservice. One of my favorite monthly treats! The cakes are also divine!

Barbara H.

Yelp
Upon enter this establishment for first visit, it was a real delightful surprise! Fantastic service! Treated us like family. Personalized our purchase without so much of any hint of emotion. Sincerely a Pleasing Experience. The carrot cake was delicious and moist. A must for anyone who wants a delicious bakery goid!! Thank You.
google avatar

Jordan V.

Yelp
Came for the glazed beignets I'd been hearing so much about and I am a fan! They're a little lighter than regular beignets in my opinion, but a nice change of pace from the traditional. We also got an order of the cinnamon sugar beignets and those didn't disappoint either. Definitely stop by to try these out. They're made fresh so they take a little while to come out depending on how many folks are in line, but well worth the wait. They only serve them until 11 am, so no dilly dallying!
google avatar

Leonard L.

Yelp
Antoine's Bakery is a awesome. The freshly made Beignets are so on and popping. If this is your first time having a Beignet I suggest this be your first ever experience. You will not be disappointed. They have many other tasty morsels to get your taste buds rocking. Giving them 5 stars.
google avatar

Lari H.

Yelp
The service was great and the beignets even better! Very friendly, helpful staff and very delicious glazed beignets.
google avatar

Ail H.

Yelp
There product is great on the East-bank, Severn location, Metairie. BUT, bad attitudes can destroy good businesses. There's a new hire at the Metairie location who has been horrible attitude. She is a middle-age, African-American, salt and pepper hair who has a nasty attitude. It's almost as if she doesn't want to work at all and she shouldn't, she's destroying this business. I've visited Antoine's bakery at least three times in the last two months and every time I visited her attitude has been horrible. She should be replaced or retrained. This is the reason I do not patronize the West Bank location because of nasty attitudes. I refuse to spend money in a place that treats customers substandard or customers spoken to disrespectfully. I hate the workers but love the product; however, being disrespectful is not worth it.
google avatar

Audrey F.

Yelp
hours are wrong on yelp and on their website. they are not open sunday at all. really was craving some cake today.
google avatar

Shan E.

Yelp
If you want a perfect king cake that is moist and tasty, Antoines on the West Bank is the place to get it from. My dad was having a major surgery and my aunt knows I love a king cake. She ordered this for me to make feel better and boy did it make me feel better I had the praline king cake. When she picked it up it was fresh out of the oven. It was so soft when we cut it. It was filled with cream cheese. This is hands down the best King cake ever. The smallest was $33 but it's worth it. I will be ordering another soon ‍
google avatar

Brandi G.

Yelp
BEST KING CAKES!!! Have had several king cakes from different places in the area and no one else compares! There cakes are also very good!
google avatar

Adunola F.

Yelp
Omg! THE best cafe pastry I've ever had in my life! No bs. I've been a Cafe Du Monde girl all my life, but I've found a new love! Hot, fresh, heavenly beignets and more!

Aric S.

Yelp
If one wants the surprise baby in the King and Queen cakes do not buy the cakes out of Mardi Gras season from Antoines.. We were visiting New Orleans and were so excited to find Antoines Bakery to purchase a King or Queen Cake but once we finished it there was no baby. Contacted Antoines and the reply was "we don't put a baby in our cakes outside of Mardi Gras season due to insurance". I asked why on the wrapper it said baby was included. Reply was "we use same packaging". I stated that is misrepresentation as they have no signs posted and the wrapping states baby included. I asked them to send me a baby for my vacation collection. Have given them 2 weeks no response.. Although the cake was good the purpose was the surprise in the cake to get the Mardi Gras New Orleans experience. Disappointed!!
