Inside the El Salvador Corridor, LA’s Best Street Food Market | Eater LA

"I stood in the steady line at Rita Castillo’s Antojitos 503 Salvadoreños, known for light, airy nuégados con chilate (yuca fritters with honey and a spiced toasted-corn drink), pasteles and sweet plantain empanadas, and a hot griddle covered in riguas; the stand also sells tamales and tamales pisques nearby on the sidewalk." - Bill Esparza

Google
Great little salvodran food place. Great pupusas. I tried the tamale, which was moist and delicious. The dessert plantain empanada with thick cream filling was so good.

We always feel welcomed there and they remember us when we come in. It’s our go to favorite spot for pupusas but their seafood is amazing too! Oh and their Marañon juice is so so good, we order extra cups to go! Thank you for always welcoming us even when y’all about to close. You guys are the best!!

I always sit at the bar when I come here. The staff was very nice and attentive. I order the exact same thing every time I came and always leave immensely satisfied. The pupusas, the plantains, and the tamal de elote are my favorite. Keep in mind that they do up charge for credit card transactions so cash is king.

Google
Overall the food was good and well priced. I particularly enjoyed the pupusas and plantains. There was a few things that made my experience worse however. First the water comes in bottles (not a big deal), secondly my waitress was very inattentive despite the fact I told her it was my first time there, lastly I found a piece of paper in my repollo. Unlikely I'll come again with so many other good food options nearby.

Google
$41.92 for Lunch (including a $5 tip) 3 tostadas beans and ground beef typed with stinky cheese and canned jalapeños. 2 plantain and custard empanadas 3 tamales de elote 1 orchata drink Waitress did not even stop by to see if I needed a refill or anything else.

Google
The food here is delicious! The mariscada and flautas are my favorite. They always make sure your cup of coffee is full. The empanadas were a great way to end our lunch.

Google
Good Salvadorian food and drinks. Can recommend their chicken sandwich (pan con pollo) and their salpicón. Great customer service

Google
Tried this place because of the good reviews, and it's in my hood. We ordered a total of 5 pupusas, and they were just ok. It's a little too greasy compared to the other places I've tried, and the pupusa is flat with little filling and not sure what cheese they use, but this ain't it. The worst was my pan con pollo. 1st bite, and my chicken was frozen! Some parts were warm, but the middle was cold. That ruined my whole experience. Won't be back. Oh, and no apologies from anyone. Just a look like I did something wrong.

Yelp
The mariscada is one of my favorites. However they do skimp on the chicharron when you order it with yuca. Not worth it. The service is very friendly. They have naughty list of people on their walls on who not to service lol

Yelp
Good loroco and fantastic beans lots of cortido and sauce, obviously my review is solely based on their pupusas

Yelp
This place has been consistently good for years. My parents and I used to come here when i was doing dance practice for my 15 in the area. Now i'm 23 and came by since i was working in the area. Their food is too good honestly. I still think about this pan every other day. It was beautiful and delicious. Very flavorful and fresh!!! the service is good too. It's a quiet restaurant, nice to go to for lunch.

Yelp
If you are looking for an authentic Salvadorian restaurant, this is your place. The food was very good and the pupusas are HUGE!

Yelp
My family and I were on our way to Austin but stopped by in the Houston area for lunch. We found this place and it was def a great find. The Carne Asada my husband ordered was flavorful and the pupusas I ordered were big and delicious! They also had a dessert that I had not eaten since I was 7. Nuegados, man that def took me back to my childhood days. The waiters were super nice. Bathrooms super clean. Pretty good place!

Yelp
This is probably one of my favorite Salvadoran restaurants in Houston. Their menu is expansive - offering pupusas, soups, seafood, parilladas... If you're new to Salvadoran food, you can't go wrong with the pupusa plate, which comes with two pupusas of choice, tamale of your choice and fried plantains or fried yuca. If you want to eat on the lighter side, the fried mojara plate with rice and salad is a solid choice - the whole fish was cooked perfectly and could easily feed 2-4 people. Salsa wasn't too spicy; curtido (cabbage salad) was great. The tortillas are homemade, too! Aguas frescas, beer, and micheladas are some bevs of choice. My grandmother loved the agua de jamaica; and the michelada mix was good. Wasn't expecting a Salvadoran restaurant to offer up a good michi. Cash and credit are both accepted. Menu has food photos, so no worries about any language barrier. Food comes out hot and fast. For those commenting on it being a rough neighborhood ... how so? It's a predominantly Latino neighborhood. Not sure how that translates into "rough." Expand your life experiences already...

Yelp
definitivamente muy caro por algo buy básico $2 por UN bolillo. Total $11, ahora entiendo porque siempre esta vacío. precios en línea no son iguales en persona.
google avatar

Roma L.

Yelp
Delicioso. Best Salvadoran food in the neighborhood. We will always keep coming back.
google avatar

Vinh N.

Yelp
The food is great. Pupusas that are not greasy. Crisp curtido. Tamal elotes that tasted like you're processing the kernels on the spot. Prices are reasonable. It's in rough location, and the area is quiet which bothers me more than a place where foot and car traffic are busy like the Gulfton area. The place itself was clean, and quiet for a Saturday evening which reflected the neighbourhood. No one on their staff spoke English though so ordering was somewhat confusing as I puzzled over how plaintains were fried besides "normal". I think they were amused that I didn't fit the normal clientele.

Yelp
Ate here and wanted a papusa to go but she told me that I needed to order 3 more to go instead of just one extra from my plate when I had two as my entrée already. The service & food was mediocre not coming back.
google avatar

Gabrielle A.

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't eaten here until recently. I love pupusas and missed eating them ever since I moved from Los Angeles. I am SO thankful this is near our home because it is hands down one of the best pupusas I've had. I ordered 3 pupusas- 1 frijoles con queso and 2 revueltas. They were all delicious, flavorful, and hit the spot. They were also huge- like the size of my hand. You definitely get a good deal with their reasonable prices. 10/10 recommend and will be going back soon!
google avatar

Mari G.

Yelp
The food is very badly cooked. My pupusa was burnt in some spots. The rice was flavorless and cold. And the pupusa sauce was basically water with a hint of tomato. The service was rude. And tried to overcharge us. I would not recommend coming here. It's definitely pricey for what they give and the given the area. Avoid!
google avatar

ANDRE G.

Yelp
They have the best pupusas in town. I've been to other Salvadoran restaurants and this is BY FAR THE BEST. I especially like the revuelto pupusas. I definitely recommend this place.

Laura P.

Yelp
Had been here no complain here yesterday and myself and daughter got SO SICK SOMETHING LIKE FOOD POISONING., I could see if it was just one of us but all three we had pupusas and tamales and all three where vomiting all night horrible experiences
google avatar

Erwin V.

Yelp
I have eaten many pupusas in my life and this place is definitely a top 5 in food quality. So delicious!!!!!
google avatar

Jon L.

Yelp
Oh man, those pupusas were so delicious. The bean and cheese one, I had really low expectations, but man it was so good. It had a lot of umami flavor and the right balance between the beans and the cheese. The pupusa "special" that had a lot of different mixes was excellent. It went really well with their house-made tomato sauce and pickled cabbage. We also tried the chicharron pupusa that was fatty goodness. While I would not drive 20 minutes for a special trip out here, I did really enjoy the meal. 4 stars for being a fairly special hole-in-the-wall kind of place. Highly recommend if you are in the neighborhood.

Yelp
The BF picked this place out and it was great!!! In fact, I am noticing that when he picks a restaurant it is good and when I pick it is hit or miss..... I ordered the Special A platter which came with Fried Yucca (and some fried pork), a chicken or corn tamale--I opted for the corn, and 2 pupusas--I had the Loroco/Cheese (Salvadorian exotic veggie & cheese) and the Revueltas (pork & cheese). Pupusas came with cabbage and some kind of really good red sauce. I didn't much care for the Loroco pupusas as it didn't have much flavor, but the Pork was EXCELLENT! Fried Yucca--Meh, not so much. It was like a French fry and the pork was really tough. But the Corn tamale was great! I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch, and am already planning on when I am coming back and what I am going to eat!!! :-D

Amanda S.

Yelp
Food was super yummy. I LOVE their tamales. In my opinion they're 184829x better than Mexican tamales. Just as a heads up, they don't know English so it was a bit of a barrier for me.

Yelp
Literally, a 5 minute walk away. One of the few places consistently opened during Hurricane Harvey. My mother-in-law and I used to come here all the time before she passed (she loved the pupusas). I have been here a handful of times- food was consistent, service prompt, decent prices. I would give 4 stars, but on this occasion, deduct 1 for the greedy response during hurricane Harvey. I went in requesting a lettuce and tomato salad and was told that they could not sell it to me and it had to keep if to keep the business going. Wow, even after offering to pay I was refused. I will not patronize them anymore.

Diana T.

Yelp
This is the only Salvadorian spot in this area. Desperately wanted pupusas and sopa de mondongo. The soup is literally just water, no rice, maybe 1 stick or carrot and 2 pieces of mondongo. I went up to the counter to ask for a lime since they never cared to check up on me (and I came alone and it's empty today) and the lady, who was literally blowing her nose, handed me a lime. I smiled and said, "maybe it's best if I grab the lime since you were blowing your nose ." Tell me why she got mad at me ‍ Disgusting. So disappointed in the quality of food and service. Never coming back

Yelp
Great food and the price is even better. i definitely recommend this for authentic salvadorian food.

Yelp
After reading the reviews I was hesitant because people mentioned bad area multiple times. Well Im a Flight Attendant and I didnt consider this a bad area. Just a typical Latin neighborhood like the one I grew up in. My friend was driving from North Houston and I was driving from Clear Lake to go to the Catholic Charismatic Center which is 6 minutes away, so we decided to meet for dinner first. Great service, great food, and I felt safe. There were people going in and out with to go orders, people sitting at the counter, and I felt very welcome. I got the Especial B with 2 pupusas, a tamale and the fried bananas. Very good and big portion. Having leftovers for lunch now. I absolutely recommend it, especially if you are in the area to go to Mass at the Charismatic Center.

Yelp
Always willing to drive past other spots to get here. Best pupusas in Houston. My wife loves the platanos, beans and cream.
google avatar

Lucia P.

Yelp
Pretty good pupusas, not the best but very good. Its a clean little place with very friendly staff. Would highly recommend this place if you are looking for a quick, cheap, filling lunch.
google avatar

Berlinda M.

Yelp
Somehow the pupusas have gotten bigger over the years. I am not complaining. Estan requisimas! My husband loves their rib-eye.
google avatar

Jessica U.

Yelp
YUM! As someone who's lived in MD and grew up eating Pupusas, I can say this place is great! Loved the cleanliness, service and food. Definitely nothing fancy, but exactly what you'd want from a Salvadoran restaurant. We got 3 kinds of Pupusas, Yucca con Chicharron (duh), Empanadas de Carne and a Corn Tamale. Everything was great, we'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Five stars for effort, food quality, and value....Nice..non-pretentious..alert..this is NOT Mexican food, it is El Salvadoran...also be prepared to face a language barrier...but the waitress we dealt with was very sweet and pleasant. Plantains are pronounced Pla-tan-os....I did not try the Plantain empanandas, but might next time..They have 2 kinds of tamales..chicken and corn..in case one might be confused and think that they are just chicken and corn tamales...Elote..(sp?) are the corn ones.. The cheese pupusa with exotic vegetables (as it is explained on the menu)..is rich and yummy..one is a meal (for me), and the exotic vegetables come out in a big container, and it resembles cole slaw, The chips and salsa were served sparingly, but I thought that they were good...the place emitted a pleasant vibe..don't go there expecting fancy..it is not a yuppie dive...they do have quite a reasonable beer menu...and the horchata was interesting and slightly unconventional.

Yelp
Hole in the wall, but you would be amazed how great it is. My beautiful lady is el salvadorian, and she said it was good as mommas home cookin!
google avatar

Sam T.

Yelp
It's somewhat of an ok place , we live close by, it is very hard for me to say this place is a solid five, when I have a mother that as a business owner and cosmetologist makes better home made food than this place, good food, good value I would say. Come and see for yourself.

Nathaly R.

Yelp
Food was good and service was fast. I loved that the drinks were made fresh and natural (ordered a lemonade and a strawberry licuado). Good portion sizes. Would recommend!

H H.

Yelp
Come for great, cheap Salvadorean fare, not for ambiance. Love the pupusas and it is a plus that they serve cheap beer and micheladas.
