4 Under-the-Radar Madrid Neighborhoods for Tapas - AFAR

"A bustling, multicultural market where Senegalese vendors sell hibiscus blossoms alongside grocers stocking spice blends, creating a sensory mix of cumin, coffee, and baked aromas; the market sits amid vibrant street art and embodies the neighborhood's diverse culinary and cultural crossroads." - AFAR

The 12 Best Tapas Spots In Madrid

"The Mercado de Antón Martín is where to walk to different food stalls (or learn to stomp and clap at the city's most famous flamenco school on the top floor). For tapas, Doppelgänger stands out for its Spanish dishes fused with spicy Asian and South American flavors, like ají, curries, and kimchi. Its concise menu only has about eight dishes—and about the same number of tables, including bar seating, so reserve ahead. You can't go wrong whether you go for the €40 per person tasting menu, or just order a few a la carte. Whatever you choose, don’t miss the tangy Adobix, a tempura catch of the day topped with fermented soy and anis jam—it’ll leave you wondering how they managed to perfectly mesh so many flavors into a single bite—or the tamale with codfish dripping in zesty yellow aji, lemon, and aioli." - lori zaino

Google
Probably the best and lesser known mercado in Madrid. More suited for the locals and a variety of places to eat. Check out Asian Army if you're into Asian food and try the Laksa!

Google
I really like this market as it has a nice breakfast joint. It had most of the meat and produce stalls opens so it was nice to eat breakfast and be able to watch the locals buy meat. I enjoyed watching the butcher's knife work. It was quiet in the morning and a great little place to get away from crowds.

I was brought here on a local food tour and it's world's away from the super-touristy alternative. Food is great, reasonably priced and you can actually sit down. Plus it's a real working market where locals buy groceries. Most stalls close for parts of the day so time your visit carefully.

Google
So much better than the busy food markets in town. Worth the 15min walk away from the middle of the city. More authentic, cheaper, friendlier, Can actually get a table and eat. Love it

Google
Great Place to Eat - reasonable prices and a lot of different Spanish dishes.

Google
What a place! A living market, not just a tourist attraction where you could do your daily shopping as well as savouring an amazing selection of foods from almost all over the world in very convivial surroundings. It gets very busy and it is fairly small too on two levels so pick the time of your visit well and avoid the height of rush hour.

This market is significantly more affordable and less crowded compared to San Miguel Market. I highly recommend trying the local specialties.

Google
It was 90% closed when we went on a Tuesday at around 5pm. Nothing to indicate when it is and isn't open. Any online info said open til 11.30pm. So a bit of a wasted journey. Did pop upstairs though to the flamenco and saw some interesting pics.

Yelp
Everyone wants to go to Mercado San Miguel, but they really have to be going to the other markets in Madrid like Anton Martin. San Miguel is an absolute tourist trap, while there are so many other nice and calm markets in the city that offer great food options at a much lower cost. During the month of August, a lot of the vendors are closed for vacacciones but there are still great options here! You can grab a seat at one of the stalls that offer a variety of food types. The market also serves as a place to get produce and meats if you have a kitchen or are cooking at home.

Yelp
Local fresh market for the people. The morning time is the best to get the freshest produce for your meal. Not a touristy area, no frills but still very cool incredible food, this is where Madrid shops for your meals. I was buying a small case of saffron from one of the vendors on the 1st floor, and while I was waiting as he was slicing ibarian ham he gave us a little piece of the ham and said in Spanish "thank you for waiting" - it's the details y'all *swoon*

Yelp
The vendor Gastro Chigre has Asturian food offering a great deal of 3 tapas for 12 euro. A butternut squash salad, baked provolone stuffed with onions and mushrooms, and soupy rice with lentils, and truffle oil. Good food, great wine, friendly service. Menu in English!

Yelp
This is a cool (locals) market in the literary area of Madrid. I was told restaurants shop here very early in the morning. Lots of fresh produce, Spanish speciality meats, seafood, and Spanish gourmet foods are featured in this market. There are restaurants located in the basement that include sushi and Italian cuisines which are open for both lunch and dinner.

Yelp
Local indoors farmers market which is less touristy. Great tiny tapas bars on two floors with a flamenco school on their third floor. Good hangout spot if you wanted something with no frills.

Yelp
This market does not have the aesthetic appeal of somewhere like Mercado San Miguel, to which tourists should go if that is what they want, but is a great local source of fresh produce as well as housing some excellent food outlets, in particular an Italian restaurant where I had incredible porchetta. I've also picked up quite a large punnet of olives here for €1.90, which shocked me so much I had to get the price confirmed!

Yelp
Cheap, tons of choices, fresh! Meats, wines, fruits and veggies, excellent feel of locals.

Yelp
An excellent market in the area. You can find fresh fruits, meats, cheeses and wines here, all at very reasonable prices. Side story that I just have to tell: There's a certain purism about the shopkeepers in Spain that I admire. At the market, we decided to buy some cheese at one of the stalls. We wanted to try a manchego. We also saw he was selling a type of jam that we had been served before on top of cheeses. It made for a very good sweet/savory combo when combined with a good cheese. So we thought we should buy some of that too. The shopkeeper then told us that we shouldn't put that on manchego, and that the cheese we were buying should just be eaten by itself. And so he didn't sell it to us. I don't think there's a single shopkeeper in the US that would have turned down more sales just to advise the customer correctly. Love it. For the record, that stall was on the 2nd level, one of the middle rows, and the shop keeper was an older guy. He also pointed us to a good wine store outside the market because the market shops didn't have the particular wines we were looking for. Little things like that make the experience.

Yelp
small working neighborhood market meant for locals. Yokaloka looks good, but only open after 11:30. upstairs with flowers and other small stalls.
