Ant's Nest | World's best safari camps for families

"One of the most child-friendly camps in Africa: unpretentious, relaxed and ideal for first-timers safari-goers who want a slightly gentler experience. Waterberg is a pretty area, with gentle hills, pretty forests and a couple of rivers. It’s tranquil, rather than stunning. There’s no elephant or lion – so it can feel a little tame. Because it’s a former family bush home, it’s full of colourful, informal living spaces and child-friendly spots (from a pool, trampoline and sandpits to stables with 70 horses). The staff are brilliant with children, taking them on bug trails, spoor-tracking lessons, riding trails and even feeding them supper. There are big hot baths for relaxing after horse rides but otherwise rooms are roomy, colourful and comfortable, rather than super-luxurious – ideal for families. The lodge is owner-run, and the staff exude the same warmth and friendliness. It’s a happy, relaxed place, though always full of children – which is not every holidaymaker’s dream. " - Lisa Grainger

We spent three nights at Ant’s Hill and will forever regret not staying longer. We chose this incredible place for our private elopement, and from the moment we arrived, the entire staff made us feel welcome and cared for. We arrived early in the afternoon, had time to settle in, and even began horseback riding that same day.||||Our accommodations in “The Lookout” were breathtaking. The room was massive, beautifully furnished, and had sweeping views that made it hard to leave. Every meal we had was amazing, and it was such a special touch to share some of them with the staff, who felt more like friends than hosts.||||The day of our wedding was unforgettable. We arrived to find an altar decorated with beautiful local flowers, and later learned that the stunning, professional-looking arrangements were done by our favorite guide, Jen. Freddie played a huge role in making the day seamless. Our ceremony was a private elopement and we even asked him to walk the bride down the aisle. He went above and beyond to get us close to the wildlife and to create moments we will never forget.||||After the ceremony, we enjoyed a private dinner with more incredible food. Our room and deck had been decorated with flowers, and a wedding cake was waiting for us. Martha was wonderful throughout our stay—she arranged massages, steamed our wedding outfits, and handled every question and detail leading up to the big day. My wife rode Serengeti every day, and the team even arranged for Serengeti to be waiting at our sundowner so she could be part of our photo shoot.||||At the end of every trip, we ask each other if we would go back and do it all over again. With Ant’s Hill, the answer is an enthusiastic yes. We are already planning our return. This place is absolutely amazing and helped create the most incredible experience of our lives.

This place is magical. You will get in amazing riding on really wonderful horses. The food is terrific, my rooms were beyond beautiful...I highly recommend this excellent conservation reserve for anyone who wants to see Africa without the stress of aggressive predators. |Sift through the photos, read the reviews--the people I met were as happy as I was, one had been a couple of times before, and the new friends I made vowed for a 2027 return. |The highest of recommendations go to this lodge, the staff, and the owner! I went May of 2024.

I honestly don’t know where to start. My stay at Ants Nest was one of the most special weeks of my life. From the second I arrived, Kim made me feel completely at home.|OBK, Effy, JoJo, Taryn, Kayla, Sebastian and Ishmael are all absolute stars, and I can’t thank them enough for all of the laughs, the patience, and the way they looked after me all week.||The riding really was incredible and far surpassed my expectations. The horses were beautifully looked after, schooled and so well matched to each of us. With the gentle coaching and encouragement I received, particularly from Effy, I feel like a completely different rider now from when I arrived. My confidence has grown more than I ever could have expected.||The food was exceptional. Every meal was delicious, and the smaller details from the bedtime fables left on my pillow to the electric blankets to warm the bed and help soothe the aches in the cooler evenings were such thoughtful touches that meant so much after long days in the saddle.||Another highlight was meeting so many wonderful people across the three sites — sharing stories, laughter, and rides with such an interesting mix of guests from across the world made every day even more varied and special…|… and then there was the game capture. I still can’t quite believe I got to be part of it. As a mature vet student, it was such a privilege — a rare, once-in-a-lifetime chance to see conservation in action and to be involved, even in a small way. It’s something I will never forget.||This wasn’t just a holiday; it was the finale to an African adventure that has fed my soul, stretched my riding skills, and provided me with memories I’ll treasure for the rest of my life.|Thank you for making it so unforgettable. I am leaving with tired legs and the biggest smile but a big piece of my heart will remain at Ants!

My weeklong trip to Bushwillow as a solo traveller was perfect, and I couldn’t have enjoyed it more. Majority of guests there with me were also travelling solo, which made for a lovely atmosphere. ||Clearly the main reason I went was for the riding, and this delivered beyond my wildest dreams. All of the horses are beautiful, well behaved but still forward going, and every effort is made to create a good match between horse and rider as ever experience level is catered for. The guides are knowledgeable, the wildlife was amazing, and because the horses live out in the reserve, the animals are so used to them that you can get unbelievably close, making it an incredible experience.||The hosts and staff at the lodge are warm, welcoming, and nothing is too big or too small to make your stay unforgettable. Every detail personal detail is thought of, and I felt incredibly well looked after. The accommodations are also beautiful, looking out over the bush and feeling close to nature, but also offer privacy and tranquility if desired. ||Like so many other guests, I am already plotting how to repeat this once in a lifetime experience, and cannot recommend it enough. Thank you Bushwillow team!

From the moment we enquired about booking a stay at Ant's Hill, the staff were nothing but amazing. They replied promptly and answered all our questions, provided an outstanding level of service and made us feel welcomed. At the lodge the staff were so friendly and helpful, our meals were amazing and everything we needed was there. We had an amazing 5 days riding beautiful horses, seeing so many incredible animals and enjoying spectacular sunsets. I understand why so may people go back again and again. I can't recommend Ant's Hill highly enough.

We stayed at the Nest for 4 nights and the Hill for 3 nights. Amazing experience with friendly and attentive staff, delicious food, and most importantly- AWESOME horses. Loved my week here! My friend and I went mostly for the horseback riding safari aspect, but we ended up doing bush walks, drives, and mountain biking as well. They do a great just if catering to all different riding skill levels as well.
