The Best Restaurants In Tokyo

"Foreigners usually pay more attention to places like Sukibayashi Jiro or Sushi Saito, but the sushi chef at Umi makes you feel right at home, which goes a long way when you’re spending $300 or more on a meal. Your dinner at Umi will feel warm and welcoming - plus, the food is awesome too." - josh layne

A very pleasant chef course. The chef and the staff were impeccably friendly and welcoming creating a very pleasant atmosphere for the meal. The sushi was good with interesting creative touches. Very soft abalone, delicious tuna. Deliciously smooth sake. The very high price probably doesn't justify the experience completely comparing to other sushi courses in the city.

Food 3/5 - reasonable to try once, but would not revisit The cost was ~¥50,000 per person for the omakase and a drink which includes tax and service charge (which is not included in the Tabelog reservation menu cost). I would describe the menu as "simple". Each dish was high quality and tasty, but I felt lacked inspiration or flair. Over the 17 seafood dishes/nigiri, none were particularly memorable or amazing for me. Although each piece of seafood was prepared or cooked to perfection (eg ika was prepared to have almost mochi like texture!), I couldn't help but feel a bit bored and disappointed with each coming dish. It may have been the chef's way of letting the ingredients speak for themselves rather than over embellishing them... However at this price point you would expect any chef to be able to achieve this. We paid more than ¥2500 per nigiri, which I think was overpriced. I honestly wonder how the locals would rate the menu served to us given it somehow has such a high Tabelog rating, is there a different menu served to locals? Or perhaps the menu caters to a traditional style of palate and it wasn't a good match for me. Echoing other reviews here, if you have had great sushi before and want something new or different, do not come here. However if this is your first time trying expensive sushi before, you will have a good time. Nonethless I can't shake the feeling that we got the gaijin treatment and this is a bit of a tourist trap. Service was attentive and friendly. Our dishes were all explained briefly in English by the Head chef. Note that our seating was all tourists - no locals. The dishes were also served quite quickly, we finished within 1.5hrs and felt rushed to leave. The restaurant is small - considered "cozy" or cramped depending on how you like it, but overall clean and nothing to give particular praise or complain about. We were all given pairs of chopsticks to take home as a souvenir (which seems like a strange gift if you were a local). Bring cash because apparently their EFTPOS machine breaks not infrequently. The restaurant was suspiciously easy to reserve on Tabelog with a high number of openings, so take this as a precaution before you open your wallet. Visited May '25 - Tabelog Bronze & Hyakumeiten 2025 (rating 3.90/5)

Google
Amazing sushi place! Great experience overall, quite expensive as any other place of this level, but to me it was 100% worth it, not like some people are saying, why? Great portion sizes, nothing is small, and the list of sushi and non-sushi dishes is long. Everything seems of good quality as well. The flavor of every dish is different and quite complex. Give it a try!

Don’t get me wrong, the food was good. But for 50000 yen, it didn’t deliver. Maybe there is some subtle flavors that my taste buds just aren’t able to appreciate, but it tasted no better than many other places at half the price. Service was also not that attentive for fine dining, and staff just lacked… charm. Btw… there were only foreigners dining. That makes me think the locals know much better places.

Google
Sushi Umi served really good sushis. However, starters could still be improved as it lacks a little luster. The place is quite crowded since its a very small setting. And it is a little untidy. Sushi was very good — especially transitions on the tuna.

Google
fish quality is great but everything else is not. service very rushed, unprofessional/ pushy waitress. the place seems run down and a bit unhygienic. not for the price

Google
Here to help filter out some of the weird reviews...the chef and staff were all very friendly. Sushi is good. If the price point gives you pause there's plenty of other options, it's Tokyo. The weird comments about paying in cash seem like a scam or bots cuz this restaurant is prepay for the meal when it's booked...

Yelp
Back in March - my bf took me a Michelin starred restaurant called Umi from our second year anniversary . It's my first Michilen star restaurant. Needless to say the food and the experience were impeccable and amazing. I love the abundance of courses within the omakase. It has to be top favorite memory from my trip to Japan. We had over 20 courses. 1. Fresh squid 2. Baby sea eel from ehime Hiroshima 3. Burnt brown rice with black caviar 4. Japanese mussels from mirugai aichi prefecture 5. Marinated Beni shrimp from hokaido with shrimp roe and shirmp marinated soy sauce 6. Young sea bream from Kawagawa prefecture 7. Some fish from Kowashima 8. Black sought sea perch from Nagasaki prefecture 9. Crab vinegar with fresh crab from Hokkaido 10. Big fin squid from Nagoya prefecture 11. Horse mackerel from oita prefecture 12. Cockel 13. Grilled butter fish from yamaguchi prefecture 14. Akame tuna with soy marinade tsuke from chiba ko prefecture 15. Chuu toro 16. Oo toro 17. Chawamushi 18. Uni from hyogo prefecture 19. Sweet shrimp 20. Sea eel from Nagasaki prefecture 21. Handroll with chu toro and pickled cucumber 22. Clam soup 23. Egg cake ? 24. Mango from hyogo

Yelp
Fantastic omakase experience. If you are familiar with omakase, this place will check all of your boxes: perfectly balanced flavors, freshly grinded wasabi, perfectly cut fish...the rice was a bit on the sour side but is not unpleasant. All of your expectations of a Michelin star restaurant, this will meet it. Umi also is not strict on traditional rules, such as attire, volume of your conversation, etc. Chef Shimamoto also speaks very good English and is be able to explain the food to foreigners. Umi is on the pricier side, but you definitely get what you pay for.

Yelp
We came here on accident - I forgot I had eliminated this place from the list of omakase places I wanted to experience, and got excited when my hotel was able to book a seat here. The cancellation fee would have been the cost of the meal, so we came anyways. The meal was very extensive - 24 courses! The price also reflected that. The fish were very fresh - what I found most interesting was that they used brown rice instead of white. My boyfriend is allergic to shellfish, and they were able to accommodate with substitutions. The seating was very intimate, only 10 seats at the bar. It was fun to see each party's reaction/behavior to the meal. Personally, I wasn't WOW'd by the meal like some other people, and was kind of bummed my favorite fishes were not served. However, almost half the courses were fish I've never experienced so it made it memorable. Would I come back? No. Would I recommend to any of my friends? Probably not, but I had a great time. The chopsticks were also gifted to us to bring home, which was a nice surprise.

Yelp
The best sushi I have ever tasted in my life. It is an absolute experience I cannot forget. I'm so happy I did this Michelin Star restaurant. It's so worth it.

Yelp
Other reviews mention the quality of the food and price already so I will skip on them. What compelled me to write this review was the their detailed care for customers. We forgot our souvenir chopsticks on our way out. We were already 2-3 blocks away from the restaurant, and it was dark out. Suddenly we heard a motor cycle from behind, and strangely it stopped right next to us. We were surprised at first, but turned out it was the chef himself delivering our forgotten chopsticks. He didn't have to do this at all, especially since he needed to make it back on time for the next reservation. But he still took the effort to hunt us down. My friend and I dropped our jaws when this happened- we will probably never forget this. Will recommend.

Yelp
A Michelin starred omakase experience was on our Tokyo bucket list. Rather than a hotel concierge, we enlisted the help of TABLEALL for the reservation. When our first choice fell through, we decided UMI looked like a great bet and has two stars. We opted for the 9:00 pm seating on a Monday night and joined eight other hungry diners for quite the experience. You must bring a BIG appetite. There were 24 different bites served... TWENTY FOUR! Two people at the restaurant had to tap out and pass on a couple of bites, but I persevered... Highlights included the whale, uni, and any and everything tuna. Some bites were a little too heavy handed on the wasabi, but maybe that's just me. Peep my pictures for the rest of the beauties that graced our table. The chef spoke very little English but his righthand guy did. With a mix of American and Japanese patrons, it was a lively and fun atmosphere, with the staff cracking jokes throughout the meal. We sipped on sake and water, both which were filled rather attentively. So, when all is said and done, was it worth it? It was certainly an experience I'll never forget! That being said, we had really quality sushi at the fish market a couple of days before for less than a third of the price. If I had money to spend though, I would probably come back to see what else Chef Nakamura has up his sleeve!

Yelp
My husband and I were planning a honeymoon to Japan, and being avid sushi lovers, we knew we had to try an omakase sushi restaurant. One of our friends recommended Umi, and she had her mother (who lives in Tokyo) help us make a reservation and also pay the 200,000 yen deposit for two. We arrived on our reservation day on Friday at 9:00pm and were seated in the table in the back. The whole restaurant was very small and had counter seats at the sushi bar and two tables. No one else sat at the table in the back though except for us. I'm still unsure why we were seated in the back as we would have preferred sitting at the counter to have the ultimate omakase experience. Many courses were served that night ranging from tuna sushi to grilled octopus. Honestly, I expected more from a two michelin star restaurant. Service was top-notch, and the servers were very attentive to us, but we got very little, close to zero attention from our sushi chef. Our male server was really nice though. He even tried to explain to us every type of fish by bringing over a book with pictures and descriptions whenever we didn't understand his explanation! Furthermore, the fish was fresh but it wasn't anything out of this world. The restaurant has no menu so you order drinks based on what you want to try. At the end of the night, a piece of paper comes with a pencil written price on it with no real breakdown, so be careful how you order when you visit! There's a lot of courses to try so come on an empty stomach! One thing that I did enjoy was that the sushi rice was sticky but yet all the kernels still separated in your mouth when you ate it, giving it a whole different level of texture. Otherwise, I'm sad to say I've had better sushi around the world and this restaurant sadly didn't live up to the two michelin star hype.

Yelp
The restaurant boasts an unassuming exterior but the experience is anything but ordinary. To put it simply, I never wanted it to end. Since reservations are difficult to come across, I booked through American Express Platinum concierge 3 months in advance. As you enter Umi, the hostesses immediately guide you to your seat at the sushi bar and offer you sake/wine - I went with the sweet sake. They were notably vigilant throughout the meal and offered to replenish beverages as soon as you finished your glass. The two chefs were amicable and humorous, bringing an air of lightness and jest to the meal which made me feel more comfortable eating at my first 2-star Michelin. As each dish was served, they made sure to translate to English and answered any questions patrons had. As a foreigner, I felt extremely welcomed and comfortable at Umi. The omakase blew my mind. The chefs prepared a plethora of different fish, all locally sourced of course, including otoro, chutoro, uni, ebi, and the list goes on. Melt in your mouth is all I have to say. My personal favorite was "kuromutsu," a beautiful fatty and mild tasting fish rarely (if ever) served outside of Japan. For those who know the value of freshly grated wasabi, it's worth noting that in between courses the chefs would grate fresh wasabi and generously deposit it on everyone's side dish. At the end of the meal, the chefs went around the table to inquire if anyone still had enough room for more and took some specific requests from regulars. Don't miss out on an opportunity to dine here while in Tokyo.

Yelp
Sushi Umi. Two Michelin Star sushi restaurant in the Neighborhood of Minato! This restaurant has very limited seating and is very tough to get reservations. I believe there is a 2-3 month waiting list! They have two set dinner servings per night that lasts around 2 hours. We had four seats at the bar for the 9pm set. This place was the best sushi we have ever put in our mouths. They served us fatty toro sushi that was fattier and juicier than any other sushi restaurant we have been to. They served us the best piece of local uni that just melted as soon it touched my tongue. We thought during one course, the chef served us salmon. One of my friends mentioned salmon and he said no. This is trout. I guarantee you that you have probably never tried trout salmon. It's just something uncommon over here in the states. Well, not when your restaurant is two Michelin stars!!! This is the type of creativity and outside the box thinking that the Chef does here! I took pictures of every course so scroll through and enjoy!!!

Yelp
I reserved Umi via Voyagin for $10/ person because I literally did not know how else to book. I was a little skeptical of paying for someone to book for me but I'm so glad I did. I was super excited when I saw that Umi had a 2 Michelin star rating even though the original chef passed away, the chef now is still awesome! He was really nice and easy going and talked with us if we had questions. I hit my max at around 20 pieces, but the boy ate up to the 22 pieces. They also ask you if you are still hungry at that point to see if you want more. Now I'm back in the Bay Area and for the price and quality - so far I haven't found a place that can compare.

Yelp
All in all a great spot. ~24 pieces Omakese. Excellent quality fish, as fresh as it gets. Chef is funny and the team is spot on with service. Tried Whale meat, which tho not against it from a humane perspective, just didn't find it all that tasty :) gimme some toro all day! Two nit picks - for a michelin 2 star place i'd expect a bit more seamless movement of servers. Between me/colleague, is where they continuously passed food between the sushi bar and the server to serve the table behind us. They should really carve out a dedicated space for that as it was kind of irritating to always have food pass over your head. second is the rice - i'm guessing that is the house style but for me, the rice vinegar is a touch strong. I prefer it a bit milder. but really just a nitpick, as it was delicious nonetheless.

Yelp
Consistently top-notch offerings from Nakamura-san and team at Umi. They sure know how to crack a laugh too making the environment surprisingly carefree considering the restaurant's location in Minami Aoyama. Highlights of the evening were the sayori, kodai, and buri. また来月!

Yelp
This was our best meal in Tokyo and sadly, we'll be thinking of this restaurant every time we order sushi delivery. The quality of the fish was amazing and the level of service was what you'd expect from a 2-star restaurant. The restaurant atmosphere is happy, with the chef cracking jokes with his assistants. We tried a $60-dollar omakase at another place to compare, and while that was good, Umi definitely blew them out of the water. We booked our seats through Tableall. It's worth the price!

Yelp
We came to Umi base on 2 Michelin star review. As soon we walked in we realized it was not the original chef. A gentlemen explain the Chef passed away last month. his apprentice 龍次朗 took over with him the place and continue the business. We were really skeptical and stayed on with not much to expect.. From Toro, halibut, shiko, and whale meat... This young chef blow our mind away. He prepared a live squird infront of us from scratch, explained how tamago was done ( even show us the base of the broth ).. His attention to detail and eager to share information to his customer is amazing. many upscale sushi place treat foreigner "stupid" cause they think you don't know "sushi", but Umi treat all customer the same and doesn't roll their eyes when you ask question. Upon paying our check, they even prepare a little gift for us to take away. We felt like we had dinner in Japanese friend home.. Not just a restaurant .. Definitely will come back !!

Yelp
With all due respect, I do not understand how this establishment has earned two Michelin stars. I have experienced a few Omakase menus over the years for 1/3 Of the price and that have earned no stars and Umi, unfortunately, does not come close. I feel they seriously need to re-evaluate their pricing given the quality of experience that they offer. It almost felt like a tourist trap. The vibe of the restaurant was not relaxed or comfortable. There were too many staff in the small restaurant creating a claustrophobic feel. Wine pours were small. But the most unfortunate part was the rice. Rice is a very important part of the sushi experience and it was not good. The texture of the rice completely hindered the experience of the fish in front of you. The staff was very courteous, but everything felt wrong from start to finish, and when a restaurant is charging as much as they are at Umi, the customer absolutely deserves better. I'm sorry if these are harsh words, but this experience is completely not worth the price, half the price or even one quarter of the price.
