The Group Behind All-Purpose and Red Hen Is Building a Roman Restaurant in Bethesda - Eater DC

"Next-door to Aventino, a 20-seat pizza shop with a dedicated to-go window will open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In the morning, customers can expect espresso drinks and pastries like blueberry and polenta muffins, chocolate hazelnut babka, prosciutto and gruyere croissants, and maritozzo, a shout-out to Rome in the form of yeasty sweet rolls split open and loaded with copious amounts of whipped cream. Friedman says All-Purpose’s core menu of favorites will be represented across a dozen antipasti, Caesar and Italian vinaigrette salads, and eight pizzas, including standbys and some new options. Sandwiches can be expected to pack in homemade mortadella, other Italian cold cuts, meatballs, and chicken or eggplant Parm. Beer, wine, and cocktails will all be on draft." - Gabe Hiatt

Yummy pizza!!! I will definitely come back. The crust is thin and delicious. Perfect balance of soft/flexible but holds its shape. I had the Buona pizza and loved it. I’m a sucker for hot honey. The cheese was great but I wouldn’t have minded more. If you’re nervous about “spicy pizzas” this is not one to fear. Fairly priced and convenient to eat in or take out.

It's amazing how great the pizza quality is across the DMV these days. It wasn't always this way. AP Pizza Shop is a great example of how far pizza has come. They nail the evenly baked thin crust produced by the deck ovens, a staple of the classic NE pizzerias. I sampled 3 slices and they were all excellent. BUONA - Bianco di Napoli tomatoes, mozz, pepperoni, grana, Calabrian chili honey, basil - everything you want in a solid slice, and the honey drizzle is not needed but a welcome touch SEDGEWICK - whipped ricotta, mozz, taleggio, parm, chives, black truffle honey - gorgeous white pizza, beautifully presented SALSICCIA - tomato, mozz, provolone, Italian sausage, roasted peppers, garlic breadcrumb - loved the garlic bread crumbs, they add great flavor and texture. Service was friendly and fairly fast. There is some limited indoor seating but they cater to carryout. Definitely will be back.

Excellent pizza, especially in an area not known for good food. It’s delicious. Very Neapolitan style dough, minus the wood char. One of the very best mushroom slices I’ve had. Quality ingredients, without a doubt. That said, it’s not worth the price. Price per slice will usually exceed $5, which works out to $40 per pizza. Acceptable maybe on a 5 star hotel room service menu, but not in a walk-in or delivery pizzeria, unless we’re talking gold leaf and caviar toppings. ‘ Bethesdans’ food standard is not generally high. Add one of highest retail rent districts in the US and Bethesda’s penchant for mediocre food at so-so prices, and you’ve got the makings of yet another food concept that likely won’t manage around here. Advice to management: lower the prices, make more sizes available for delivery. Consider the very tough restaurant environment in Bethesda and retool accordingly.

Came here with my 3.5 year old who adores pepperoni pizza on a Saturday around lunch time. Not super busy and I got a 18” lunch pizza with pepperoni. My kid usually will crush two Andy’s slices and he put away two slices of pepperoni pretty easily. Overall I thought it was a decent pie. 18” pepperoni for 30 bucks which included a 15% tip. It’s basically order through a computer and wait for your pizza to be delivered to your table. I’d definitely go back. Might be the best pizza in Bethesda row. The only real competition in Bethesda is Andy’s. One thing that would put it up at a 5 for me would be higher quality pepperoni that turn into cups when baked.

Walked in on day three. Pizza was good. Would give it a 3.5 if I could. Thought the Sedgewick was a bit too sweet and the Standard was a bit too cheesy but overall nice pies. Garlic knots were delightful. Friendly staff and attentive service but they need to figure out the waitlist system for dine-in folks. Everyone was working hard! Looking forward to coming back in a few months to try again.

I love the sister restaurant in DC so I was thrilled when they opened a place in Bethesda. Fantastic pizza.

Google
It was my first time here. Let me start with that. We've walked by this place a dozen times but never made our way in. My family and I are always looking for a new pizza spot to try and AP was the right place and the right time. I'll talk about the space for a minute. It's a small pizza place. It's not meant for groups. They have maybe four or five tables. This is more of a quick bite or grab a slice at the counter before the movies kind of place. If I can wrap up the vibe and the decor in three words, I would use modern, hipster and clean. I kind of dug the feel. It has a tiny bit of grit to it and that's more than I can say for most of Bethesda. So because we started with a group of four eventually joined by my brother-in-law's family of four, we ended up squeezing about eight people into a small booth. This was by choice. But they were accommodating. I wouldn't recommend this place for groups, but the service was outstanding and it felt like an A+. Here what stood out from our order. They have mixed drinks on their menu and if you have an old-fashioned on your menu, I'm going to try it. I really enjoyed mine. The focaccia bread with garlic butter was incredible. I highly suggest you try that if you're gonna come in. Of the two pizzas we got, I thought the plain pie was better than Tony's pie. Ordering food, whether you're sitting down or taking your food to go is also really easy. They have self-serve kiosks and I'm all for that. Back to the service, as I was ordering our food through the self-serve kiosk and the staff was more than happy to give their two cents or answer any questions about the menu. I don't have any real negative notes. I know I gave 4 stars for the food, but there are no fractional ratings here.. I would say somewhere around 4.5 was my gut score. I'll add that going to a restaurant one time does not paint a complete picture. I'll probably come back to try more items. I recommend you give it a try.

Yelp
Another one of our favorite nights of the week it's pizza night. The boys and I decided to try AP pizza shop's Buona Pie. The pie is pretty good. It has a few different flavors that is comes to well. There is a taste of honey that gives it a bit of a sweet flavor to the traditional pepperoni style pizza which we enjoy. A bit of a downside is the size of the pizza were just above a personal pa pizza but smaller than a traditional size pie, so it is unable to feed three people. To counteract that there is a special going on Uber that if you get one pie, you get a second one free. Final thought is we will order again probably at the restaurant that way we can catch it when it's hot out of the oven.

Yelp
A few months ago I was ordering regularly bc their pizza was amazing. Recently in the last few weeks I notice the taste and texture of the crust changed drastically. It used to be a luscious chewy crust and now it just tastes overcooked/charred and like cardboard. Not sure if they changed methods/cooks/or what's happening the last few times but please go back to the way you were making pizza in August/Sept

Yelp
Tasty Pizza-Downtown Bethesda! I just tried AP Pizza first time today. New pizza shop located in Downtown Bethesda on busy Bethesda Ave. The shop has a brilliant neon sign outside its entrance. Primarily a Carryout has a small dining area w/booth & bar height table seating. Menu includes "Deck Oven Slices" I gather this refers to the pizza oven. Several varieties of pizza to choose-sold by the slice. I ordered the "Salsiccia" (tomato, mozzarella, provolone cheeses, italian sausage, roasted peppers & garlic bread crumbs.) Delicious! And Creamsicle Panna Cotta. Fresh flavorful ingredients & creamy light dessert. Friendly welcoming guy greets everyone @the door. Great service. See Photos.

Yelp
Skimpy toppings, meatball and red pepper so bland had to doctor considerably at home to give it flavor. Crust also oddly wheat tasting - not chewy and dry. Caesar salad on the other hand excellent!!

Yelp
I really enjoyed the cheese pizza, and the pepperoni & mushroom pizza as well. The pizza definitely reminded me of growing up in New Jersey and going to the corner pizza shop to buy a slice. Recommend if you like New Jersey/New York style pizza.

Yelp
If we can give 4.5 stars we would! This is the closest that I've come to New York style Pizza in the DMV in a long time. As a native New Yorker, I crave foldable pizza and this met the mark. It is a bit pricey when you order it via delivery, but we will definitely be ordering again via pick up and can't wait to try other items on the menu. This time around we opted just for the plain cheese pizza and it was so satisfying!

Yelp
Absolutely love their pizza! The staff helped me order since they have kiosks off to the side. There isn't a lot of seating but it makes for a nice spot to eat. The pizza perfectly reminds me of my favorite pizza place when I visited Greece last summer. The crust, sauce and quality of ingredients were perfect. If you're in the area it's a must!

Yelp
Best pizza in Bethesda. Actually, you can't get better pizza in DC and yes that includes 2 Amy's. The pizza is consistently delicious, tastes fresh and always served hot. There is nothing not to like. If you're looking for Dominos this ain't your pizza place!

Yelp
Just found my new favorite pizza place for delivery! The Sedgewick pizza was so delicious with the perfect balance of sweet and savory! It was cooked to perfection and the delivery was ready so fast! The cookies were absolutely divine and are a new favorite!

Yelp
Saw a review of this place and had to try. Restaurant is small but wait staff very friendly. Owner provided complimentary garlic knots when our pizza didn't come out to his satisfaction. He didn't want us to be hungry waiting. Pizza and knots were wonderful. Will definitely come back.

Yelp
The location is perfect and the set up of the place is unique (they had a Dali painting with pizza slices on the wall! I mean... awesome). I really wish I liked the food more though. We ordered two pizzas and for some reason they were sweet. I've never had a sweet pizza it was actually confusing and overpowering to my palette. Where did the sweet come from? We wonder if it's the oil they drizzle on top. Again, wish I could give this place a better review but I don't think I'll order pizza again just not for me.

Yelp
Disappointingly ordinary pizza. Crust was good but sauce, cheese, and toppings were really bland. Toppings were skimpy to boot.

David R.

Yelp
This was our second time back and I scored it lower this time. We did a carry-out. The good: We got two whole pizzas. The Sedgwick and the Motorino. The pizzas were outstanding. The bad. : The roasted garlic knots were just horrible!!! They obviously were fried in grease. They were soo greasy that when squeezing them, it looked like a sponge with the greasing spilling out. There was enough grease to make me nauseous. A cardiologist's dream for bringing in more revenue. unless they fix this, don't bother with the knots. on the other-hand, the pizza is their MVP. Service was fair. Establishment was clean.

Yelp
Ordered Sicilian marinara pizza and caesar salad for take out. Service was very good and food was ready on time. But I was disappointed with the taste. Both the marinara sauce and the salad dressing had too much garlic ...
