Apicius

"Housed in a sumptuous 18C private mansion that calls to mind a small palace, Apicius is named after this Ancient Roman epicurean who is said to have written the first cookbook. Chef Mathieu Pacaud is keeping the flame alive at this legendary place with a magnificent terrace that amounts to a remarkably bucolic garden in the city. The dishes perpetuate fine bourgeois tradition and achieve a synthesis between classicism and creativity. Time passes, Apicius changes… but remains!" - Michelin Inspector

Apicius has a great setting. Central and with an amazing garden. The greenery and the lighting promises a great evening with candle light and al fresco. The welcome was brisk, no small talk and right to the point. The food was worth the visit for sure, however there are some shortcomings I would need to highlight. The staff, although not unfriedly lacked the attention of an upscale restaurant. The welcome lacked the smiles and warmth you would expect, the printed menu had been used before and was collected before the food arrived, clearly to reuse at another table the same evening. The wine list was not offered and I had to ask, the lemon for the water took 3 reminders. No sommelier offered a hand and the food arrived almost the instant we sat down. All seemed lttle rushed. The food was nice, all dishes prepared to perfection, perhaps lacking creativity and very much sticking to the basics. Overall I would consider for a romantic night out with good food, but the attitude of most of the staff definitively allows for further improvement.

I've had Apicius on my list for a long time, and finally made a reservation one month in advance for our family trip to Paris. I initially tried booking two months ahead but found they only opened reservations about one month prior. Located discreetly in the heart of the city, entering through the main gate along the garden path felt like stepping into a secret garden from a novel, transporting us into another world. We had originally hoped to dine with our daughter in the garden, but mid-April weather in Paris was chilly with rain, so we opted for an indoor table. The interior turned out to be even quieter and more beautiful, enhanced by warm sunlight streaming through large windows, creating a feeling of dining within the garden itself. For lunch, we decided to keep it light, opting exclusively for white wine, which turned out to be an excellent choice. The selected wines paired incredibly well with our dishes—especially the Meursault white wine, which was truly outstanding. Starting with amuse-bouches, the white asparagus dish came in two delightful versions, both perfectly harmonized with their sauces. The blue lobster dish was simply exceptional. The service was notably attentive; when my wife and daughter briefly stepped away to the restroom just as the main courses arrived, the staff thoughtfully covered their dishes with elegant glass domes to keep them warm. The squid dish, infused subtly with an oriental twist, achieved perfect balance. Everything, down to the desserts and coffee, was flawless. If you're new to French cuisine or feeling hesitant, Apicius offers a thoroughly satisfying first experience. We definitely look forward to visiting again on our next trip to Paris. Thank you!

Google
We booked the reservation from a Tik tok video that highlighted gorgeous patio restaurants. We were unaware it was a Michelin star. That was a pleasant surprise. The food was amazing, the atmosphere was stunning, and the staff were 5 stars. Service was impeccable. We would come here again.

Amazing place. One of the rare where everything is still high end. Service is extraordinary, food is perfectly balanced with so much different tastes. Expensive and worth it!

Google
Fantastic outdoor setting creating a beautiful atmosphere. Food was decent but wouldn't call it a standout, where the pork was a little tough. Had mixed feelings on the staff but overall friendly and decent service. Did not entirely meet the expectations of a 1 star but was close.

Google
This Michelin star restaurant deserves its star! We tried the 3 course menu and the food was simply delicious 👌 The venue is spacious and they have a nice outdoor area to enjoy a meal on the terrace or even play pétanque! Overall it's good value for money on the food but the drinks in general are really expensive!

I didn’t like the veal and the menu choices are rather limited so I imagine I could’ve chosen better. Very pricey for a restaurant that’s not Michelin starred. Beautiful setting though.

Extremely delicious food. I had a few vegetarian dishes and there were absolutely scrumptious.

Yelp
Dining at Apicius was an extraordinary experience that exceeded all expectations. The six-course meal was a culinary journey through French gastronomy, each dish meticulously crafted and beautifully presented. The ambiance of the restaurant was elegant yet inviting, with attentive service that made us feel truly special. Each course was a masterpiece, starting with a delicate amuse-bouche that awakened our palates. The progression of flavors was perfectly balanced, from the exquisite foie gras to the succulent main course, and each dish showcased the finest ingredients and innovative techniques. The wine pairings were expertly chosen, enhancing the flavors of each course and adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the meal. The dessert was a delightful conclusion, with a blend of textures and tastes that left us wanting more. Overall, Apicius provided an unforgettable dining experience that was both sophisticated and intimate. It's a must-visit for anyone looking to indulge in the very best of French fine dining.

Yelp
There is something unique in today's French culinary scene compared to the rest of the world. While, one might argue that majority of the Western world's cooking is derived from France also, which would certainly be a valid assertion, today's top restaurants in France are able to embrace something different. That something is the depth of tradition, the many generations of cooks that have had centuries to pass down techniques to their offspring and manage to keep that offspring in the same line of work. That depth of inherited knowledge results in some spectacular preparations that evolve gradually, but in a much more meticulous way than they do in the New World. In result, this passes down minor but significant improvements, thus pushing classicism over modernity through the abyss of time. And here we come to Apicius, a mansion housed restaurant that embodies this flow in an exemplary fashion. It recently became helmed by Mathieu Pacaud, the son of a the son of Bernard Pacaud of the Michelin three-star L'Ambroisie. The moment of transition from chef Jean-Pierre Vigato has passed, but the restaurant is still a perfect example of what French food is. Some could argue that it is overly traditional in both flavor and presentation for the price point where it sits. That would perhaps be true, but then we have to ask ourselves: is that really such a bad thing when the meal is executed so perfectly? From tender flavorful veal to the best artichoke I have ever tried, Apicius was a perfect place for a visitor to Paris wanting to try a highly focused execution of local cuisine. The turbot with clams and foam is a spectacular dish, balanced and succulent. Clams tartare simply, beautifully presented and also did not disappoint. Service was as expected, attentive to every detail and not overly formal or stuffy. Sitting in a group of four in a private room, it was amazing to have the freedom to be quite a bit louder in conversation and enjoy a comforting view of the courtyard within this 18th century mansion. There was one dish that needs to go and it is the chickpea macaroon which was was overly sweet and loaded with a terrible synthetic like flavor reminiscent of molten plastic. But, the chocolate soufflé easily cancelled out that tiny macaroon, being without a doubt the most delicate and balanced preparation I have tried anywhere. Apicius is a wonderful place and manages to preserve the charm of perfectly executed French kitchen, thus demonstrating that a pricey tasting menu does not have to be an experiment into the new and that there is reserved a place in this world for luxurious dining that admires the cycle of passed knowledge and complex technique.

Yelp
The vibe is Michelin Star restaurant extraordinaire! We were warmly greeted by Madeleine. We wanted to dine al fresco in the beautiful green & blooming garden under the perfect Parisian weather! Cherie got us our drinks. The pear juice. The peach juice. Sacha took our order. We went with the 6 course meal. The amuse-bouche was intoxicating. I may have blacked out it was soooo good. Small, crispy, delicate beautifully presented hors d'œuvres in a basket of delectable fun! It was followed by another green mint soup amuse-bouche. OMG. Lost orientation to person, place, and time! Sacha re-oriented me by explaining that Apicius was named after the chef that served Tiberius. Paul also helped serve. He has a passing resemblance to the Deep from The Boys. But unlike the Deep, Paul was super funny and rocked! Like a professor, he explained the history of the flat notched spoon. Great for skimming fat off bouillon. AND perfect now for scraping everybit of fab sauce off the plate. 1) The Hamachi with jellified cucumber water was refreshing. The micro greens were incredible. 2) Asparagus w/ crisp Croque-Monsieur twist had a tantalizing edge. 3) Lobster bisque w/ corral was splendid as expected. It had a surpising hint of chocolat. 4) The Pollock w/ spinach was sculpturally delish (and very different from the spilled paint paintings.) Ordered Blood orange theme. Orange dust. Perfectly fragrant Safffron sauce. Shhh...Paul said the extra pot of sauce he left at the table was for emergency use only. I quickly recognized that my dehydrated bread was in dire need of Saffron sauce infusion. "Nurse, hand me that spoon! Stat! Bread saved. Delicieux." 5) Veal w/ Aubergine ravioli, Morel mushroom, and hazelnut butter, peas...divine. I could hear angels singing. Satisfying. Succulent. Unbelievable mouthfeel. Perfect seasoning. Wowza! 6) Trifecta dessert. Instructions: take small scoop of chocolat sorbet then a small scoop of chocolat soufflé. Insert into pie hole. What ensues is the perfect juxtaposition of texture and temperature! Glorious! Then a pinch of heavenly cream to cleanse the palate and repeat! Magnifique! Finished off with dainty macaroons and fruit tart surprises. It was a perfect meal w/ the best people I know! Would order everything again. Just need to get a second mortgage is all. Woohoo!

Yelp
This one is easy it's a beautiful well run well orchestrated symphony of ambience and gastronomy! Food was amazing the atmosphere was amazing and the service was amazing. And an all Este we were shocked at the price I had to ask our server if it was correct as she may have forgot to add something to our bill, she said no sir this is correct! Wow! We started with rosé champagne for starters The amuse-bouche One bite of pate was an amazing starting off point. Next was a very fresh tasting butternut squash soup topped with a citrus foam that made it bright and lively. Next for appetizer was fresh scallop served sushi style in the shell also bright and lively with the citrus overtone and fresh blue lobster. Our main courses were small bites of loin of veal and rack of lamb Served with of all things and anchovy sauce which we were a little skeptical of turned out to be fabulous fabulous. That she's played as well options with mild medium and bold flavors available we opted for the medium pallet and it was delicious. In all honesty the desserts were just OK the chocolate soufflé was a tad under cooked but the wifey enjoyed it nonetheless. My millefeuille croustillant was ok. Our main server Helène was fun sweet delightful and engaging. She really made sure we were well taken care of! We enjoyed our time immensely thank you so much! https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g187147-d695081-r815657638-Apicius-Paris_Ile_de_France.html#

Yelp
Delicious creative food in a beautiful setting. Hard to find, but in a garden that feels like an escape from city center paris

Yelp
Substandard for the money. Slow service and mediocre food. Think a wedding banquet and the food you eat there. Completely NOT worth the 900 for two price tag!!!

Yelp

Yelp
What an amazing place. From the staff to the amuse-bouche to every detail put into your experience it could not have been better. We went for a mother-daughter dinner and will be back without question. We did the tasting menu and were blown away. I had ris de veau, what they are known best for and it was INCREDIBLE. They blew all of my expectations out of the water. The small hotel was in the heart of Paris but was tucked away behind gates and it was so quiet, I felt like we had escaped to the countryside. We unfortunately did not make it until desert because we couldn't pace ourselves with the other courses but even their small plate of sweets we were given with our check were unbelievable. This was my favorite dining experience in Paris thus far.

Yelp
In terms of Michilin meals, I generally am way more serious and critical of the entire meal and food experience. The location of the restaurant is gorgous - tucked away behind a sign where you walk itno a gorgous courtyard and step into a mansion of a restaurant. The front desk was cordial and nice, and there was a coatcheck. We were offered appetizers prior to the menu offering which was nice. There are 2 options order as a meal set or a la carte. The menu is all french and divided into an appetizer, main course and then dinner. I ordered as a menu set and hubs got other dishes a la carte. The server did not explain the appetizers to us and I had to ask. We were then served a pumpkin soup (palete cleanser?) which was good. The pacing for the meal was perfect due to their high attention to detail and water was always filled. Caviar Mashpotatoes - tasty Langoustine tartare & cooked Lagoustine - solid dish Mushroom Soup - rich and smooth Fois Gras - so good Beef Steak - perfectly cooked Pigeon & Duck - my favorite of the night. A little pink, had a great taste , more gamey flavor than anything in the states! Chocolate Soufflé - excellent Ice Cream - this was good but by that time I was stuffed! Make a reservation and expect to be there for 2-3 hours! Overall It was a great meal , but not for everyday

Yelp
I had heard of Apicius for years from various family members that frequent this restaurant. First of all, this place is pure opulence from the outside to the bar area to the dining room with a modern twist. I believe this is an old house converted to a restaurant. The wine menu is lengthy and the menu is amazing. I started out with the lobster bisque, had the lamb for my main course and then had the soufflé for dessert. I was not let down but next time I come back I will only switch my main course. You can view my pictures I posted to see the food I had. The service was amazing and the people were nothing but pleasant. Maybe it's because my uncle eats here often and refers to it as his "canteen." I will for sure come back but this is a restaurant you only come to once in a blue moon . There is indeed valet parking but i took an uber to the restaurant.

Yelp
In Apicius you feel as if you were getting to the countryside - a private building surrounded by a very large garden. The food is incredible, the barmen can do pretty much anything you want. My sweet teeth particularly enjoy the dessert, the Grand Marnier soufflé, and the small sweet bites at the end: tarte à la praline, tuile de carambar... In other words: a place that must be tried!
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
What else is their to say that hasn't been said? Nothing! Because this place is truly one of a kind and the Chef and staff are better than "the best." Thank you Apicius for making my night last night!!

Yelp
What an amazing place.Absolutely stunning estate. Service is impeccable just like the food. Wine selection is insanely amazing. Definitely check it out when in Paris.
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite fine dining experience in Paris to date! Upon arriving to the stunning estate located in the middle of the city, you walk across the lawn and into what feels like the foyer of someones home. We were escorted into a back dining room and our table was in front of the window overlooking the gorgeous front lawn. We enjoyed a lovely bottle of wine and decided on the the duck en croute for two complete with foie gras and sweetbreads. To start we had a seasonal crab and lobster as well as mushrooms. The food was simply outstanding. The only problem was that the duck en croute was so rich and filling that we were too full for cheese or dessert. I loved that this is an elegant restaurant that still has energy and life. Service was perfect and everything we ate was fantastic. A must if in Paris!
google avatar

Yelp
We always shy away from Michelin rated restaurants in Paris, but since this beautiful mansion was across the street from our rented apartment, we took the plunge. Service was amazing. A beautiful 3 hour meal with wine pairings. Very rich cuisine, nothing light about it.............chocolate souffle; potato gateau w/ caviar; roast pigeon; house made pate en croute; I could go on and on. Treat yourself, you live once. Worth every penny. The patio is gorgeous for cocktails and I had the best negroni of my life! We will go back next year! xo

Yelp
We sat in a small room, just five tables in there, ours was in a very comfortable and private corner. Degustation Menu is 180-200 Euros per person. Amuse Bouche to start of course- various small appetizers - a piece of smoked salmon, caramelized parmigiana, and few more. Les grenoulles (frog legs) sautéed were amazing, the best grenoulles I've tried in my life. That was as an appetizer. The pigeon cooked "smoked" style was perfect, very red, delicious and refined, really rich smoked taste. And as a seasonal suggestion, not even seasonal, but according to the chase arrival - they had "poule faisane" - which is wild pheasant - and since we never tasted it before we decided to try. It was really large portion for two for the price of 180 Euro. But the Chef created a vivid masterpiece. It looked as a whole forest or meadow on their tray when they brought it. And when served us a half to each - reminded a layer-cake - layers of green cabbage and other green vegetables in between of this pheasant meat, which was cooked I believe for a pretty long time, cause it felt like a boiled meat to me, and pieces of some kind of sausage inside too. Guess they boiled the meat and then baked all this creative formation in the oven. It was very unusual and delicious. It lack in some sauce to my mind though. Where else can you try these exotic treats? They also had the hare, wild duck and more interesting savage suggestions. So, I'd suggest you try their genuine meat dishes, but of course they have various fishes and lobster. For dessert we had also something creational that was not on the menu - it reminded me a cheesecake with a lot of beautiful small garden flowers. The wine list is quite impressive, as supposed to be in this Michelin star establishment, so you can make your choice for any taste and budget. After all it was all very commanding and just formidable. Not to mention that the dinner costed us somebody's year's salary, but what can I say - you live once and sometimes can afford to indulge and pamper yourself with this kind of expense.

Yelp
I went here for my 30th birthday dinner. My boyfriend and I were visiting Paris for the event and wanted to go somewhere special day of. I had read about Apicius on a blog that noted it as one of the "trendiest" spots in Paris. I don't know if Trendy is a word I would use to describe it... (fancy, upscale are more suiting) It gets a 5 because it was an EPIC meal and an experience that will never be forgotten. It was the perfect place for an event like this as the setting could not be more spectacular. The restaurant is in a beautiful chateau which a huge courtyard that is decorated with lights and sculptures right at the end of the Champs Elyes. When you first are greeted they direct you over to the bar to have a drink (please note they are doing this as a gesture and not to "make sure your table is ready') (we found this out after almost an hour of sitting at the bar). Also be warned that there is no English menu and if you don't speak french they will have a translator come by. The Translator will ask you what you want, but not translate the whole menu (this was an experience to say the least). I had the Crab and Vegetable salad, my boyfriend - the duck. Shared ice cream for dessert and had a bottle of champagne. Food was wonderful, service was excellent, ambience epic. Would we ever go back..? probably not. But a great night to remember for such a special event!

Yelp
Excellence at its best. First, beautiful place and surroundings. Excellent service very good food. Quiet, elegant, somehow private but with great ambience. I enjoyed every bit of a great culinary experience. It's expensive but you go for a treat, and it's worth it.

One of the finest lunches....... Super wine list. Fabulous Crab appetizer. Wonderful Turbot. No room for dessert. Maybe next time. Being all your credit cards but worth a giant splurge.

Yelp
I enjoyed one of the best meals ever at this beautiful restaurant. The ambiance being in a historic bank building, a phenomenal wine list coupled with a fantastic menu turned this into a very memorable night. We started with cocktails on the outdoor patio....we were welcomed by the chef....and the service was very good.....I would love to return for another excellent meal.
