Dishoom Black Dal Recipe: Adapted for Quick and Easy Weeknight Meal | Eater

"A favorite Indian grocery in Beaverton, Oregon, where the author regularly shops; it stocks both whole black lentils and quicker‑cooking split, skin‑on black urad dal (matpe beans) as well as specialty items like deggi mirch, and finding the split dal there inspired the much faster 45‑minute adaptation of the restaurant’s black dal recipe." - Ivy Manning

Google
Grocery store: you can find almost everything related to Indian grocery in this store. Prices are generally higher in all grocery stores so no surprises there. The place is located on 1st floor and has accessible entrance. Ample free parking is available even though the space is quite packed. It is possible you might not find a spot to park depending on how busy it can get. Fresh vegetable section can get disappointing sometimes as it is not fresh. You can get almost all the spices, they have a good collection of snacks. Not a lot many options in frozen section. I can recommend this place if you are looking for an Indian grocery store. Restaurant: this place has a small restaurant inside. The restaurant gets quite busy on weekends. Seating is available for 10-15 people. Food was okay at reasonable cost. They also had options for street foods and sweets. I tried their coffee and that was good. Restrooms: restrooms were available in the store. Staff were nice and responsive. Average wait time on weekend was 15 minutes for order.

I love the selection of food here. The food is very authentic and you actually get a huge portion. I can order and do my grocery. I am from Portland but it’s definitely worth the drive just to eat there.

Google
Love this place! Whenever I’m in Beaverton, I simply must stop in. If you are looking for 87 kinds of rice, this is your spot! I kid. More like 25-30 kinds of basmati and jasmine rice. If you can wait 20-30 minutes, order some biryani to go. It is incredible! The produce is lovely. Exotic eggplants you’re not likely to see at Safeway. They have lots of interesting sweets and some prepared foods. I opt for the frozen stuff they make in-house. Daal. Chana masala and so on. The usual suspects. They’re reasonably priced. Take one out of the freezer in the morning. Throw some rice on when you get home. Warm up your entree and boom! Yummy, healthy and essentially zero effort.

Google
If you're looking for great southern Indian cuisine look no further. The dosas and the Tikka Masala were so delicious. Is there anything more heavenly than a mango lassi? I think no. Nestled inside an Indian grocery with several tables to eat at, inside and out

Google
One of the best dum Briyani around PNW. I live in Seattle, whenever I want to have a proper Briyani I get excuses to visit Portland and stop by to have a hot Briyani at this restaurant, pack some extras while heading back. The sweets also good and fresh. I am Briyani lover so didn't tried other food on their menu so far.

Google
This place sells expired products by pasting misleading/fake labels. On this instance the top lid of the kasuri methi packaging had a white rectangular sticker with a fake packing and “Best Before” date. When we discovered insects (ghun) inside, we peeled off the fake sticker (which stated product is good until 2026), revealing the printed date which indicated the product had expired long ago (2023). The Health department should look into the inventory that this establishment stocks.

Google
I love their Great food. They carry everything from India food. They have a nice dine end . If you like spicy food then the apnea bazaar Indian store is for you.

Google
It is a local eatery inside the grocery store. Everytime we eat there, there is always a line of Indian customers. Pretty authentic and price is reasonable. Lots of sitting in the store and a separate room in the back of the store. Cakes look delicious and will try next time.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious . Great variety of food. Responsive service. May take some wait time during lunch hour specials. I just when grocery shopping while waiting.

Yelp
I was looking for a South Asian grocery and was not disappointed. I need to go back for Chaat!

Yelp
I popped in here on a Friday night to grab a few items with my mom. This Indian market has produce, spices, curries and lots of snacks. They also have a a small menu of items to include rice, curries and sweets. We decided to grab a dish to share. They had a small area for seating. We ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala. The flavor and spices were perfect and the chicken was soft. This was a nice little outing. The only recommendation would be for to figure out a better way to take orders as the line was long and awkwardly places to get into the store itself. On line ordering would help their work flow and volume.

Yelp
This was the first spot that we tried as soon as we landed in Portland. It was cold and we were craving some Indian food and this place seemed to have a lot of options to try from. It is an Indian store with a kitchen and seating area. So its kinda a restaurant in the Indian store. The kitchen started serving around 11:30 am and we got there around the same time. We ordered veg pakora, veg thali and some tea. Pakora was really good and it was really crunchy. Thali was good and portion size were huge. Thali had sambhar, rice, pulav, sweet, roti, papad, and subzi of choice. We went with subzi of the day and it was mutter aloo beans. Everything in the thali tasted delicious and we absolutely loved it. As the time progressed a lot of people started trickling in for lunch around 12-12:15pm. And it got really busy. Parking lot is huge and we easily found parking when we went there around 11:30am. Staff was attentive and quick. There was ample seating around the kitchen and in an area behind the kitchen. Highly recommended for a quick bite or an exhaustive meal.

Yelp
Apna Bazaar has been operating since 2004. When I first moved to this area back in 2008, Apna Bazaar was one of the few Indian markets in the area. Over the years the market hasn't changed all that much except for a slight expansion in size and the addition of its connected restaurant called Apna Chaat Bhavan. Apna Bazaar carries fresh produce along with all types of Indian groceries. They have frozen foods, spices, snacks, incense and puja items, packaged foods, rice, noodles, pulses and more. The store is attractive and clean. There is good lighting. Apna Bazaar offers on-line ordering with same day delivery or free in store pick up. Delivery is free with a minimum purchase. When I looked at their list of product offerings on-line, they seemed to carry everything I needed today. Instead of placing the order, I decided to visit the store. This turned out to be the wrong decision since the store did not have any of the items I needed on their shelves. In fact the shelves were rather empty in many areas. So it seems that ordering on-line is the best way to shop at Apna Bazaar. I was not greeted or offered any assistance while I browsed the store even tho there were several workers on the floor. There was one cashier sufficiently handling all transactions. Prices seem consistent with other markets in the area. Apna Bazaar may be a good option for Indian groceries if you place an order on-line. But if you don't, I suggest you shop across the street.

Yelp
We have been going to Apna Chat for years. I called to inquire if the store would be open during the holidays. The bored female answered the phone 'Yah" and then said 'Yah' they would be open and could not be bothered. Well, they were not open. I went out of my way to go there based on the 'Yah' Thanks for nothing. Stop being so lazy. Time to check out the umpteen other Indian shops in the area.

Yelp
This is a great business. Very clean, very friendly staff and competitive pricing. And they will go an extra mile to help out. I wanted to put this out. The owner of Apna Chat Bhavan( Restaurant) and Apna Bazar(Grocery) Mr. Srinivas has done a great job of quickly, following lockdown, setting up Websites for both businesses. You can order and pay online with both delivery and pickup options. Both businesses are located in Beaverton just outside of Portland. Apna Chat Bhavan is the most popular and has the best Biryani that I've tested anywhere including India. I would like to call out one special person from their kitchen staff, Mr William. Very polite and great smile. Thank you Srinivasji for your service to the local community.

Yelp
Expensive , not really reasonable and under stocked . If you are looking for generic stuff you might get your hands on it but if you are looking for specific brands etc I would suggest trying other Indian stores . Its organized well and have a good number of snacks but there have been so many times that I was looking for something and did not get it here and had to go to a different store that now I only go here as a last resort. The staff is not very friendly and the prices are high compared to other Indian stores.

Yelp
This review is more so for the little restaurant attached to the grocery store. We came with the intent of just having some masala chai and we were not disappointed. The cups were small but lots of flavor. However, the tea was not piping hot but just warm so we were able to gulp it down quite quickly rather than take our time to enjoy it. The kitchen is closed from 2:30-4:30 so we didn't get a chance to try the fresh food but they did have a case of ready made puffs and pakora and just brought out some fresh Samosas so I ordered some onion pakora, a samosa and an egg puff. The egg puff and onion pakora, though tasty, was NOT warm at all and a room temp hard boiled egg can't be good. The onion pakora was really delicious but a bit oily. But again, the temp is dangerous. A few hours after eating... to spare you all the details... my stomach was doing some not so fun things. BUT I imagine these dishes hot would be perfect. They also provide chutney with the sides as well so that is very appreciated. I also appreciate that everything is priced very well. For all the snacks purchased, I paid less than $7. A great value in my opinion. I think the next time I come back, I'll stick with the freshly made from the kitchen menu.

Yelp
Well, there is a difference .. Apna Baazar is a grocery store .. while the eatery section is Apna Chat Bhavan .. So, I would rather write about the grocery part here :) Apna bazaar is an Indian Store which means all those Indian things .. which are tough to find at a local super-mart are made available here. But will you find everything you are looking for? Yes and No !! things are there but up to an extent. What I mean is that they do have a good array of Indian things but if you have a meticulously prepared list with brand names as well, you might get a few misses by the end of your shopping. I wouldn't name but there is a bigger Indian supermart just a few hundred yards away and it would make this store rather timid in terms of size and also the variety that is there. Having said that, Apna Bazaar is not bad if you have just been coming here and haven't been to the other store. The food items are in plenty, all those masala's and ghee (clarified butter) and lentils and food mixes and raw Indian vegetables and even paan items (beetle leaves are eaten in India with tobacco as an addiction at a lot of places) are present for sure. Then they have a section for Indian utensils .. the pots and pressure cookers and all. Also, the puja samagri (things needed to pray in a Hindu ritual) has got its own section which is nice. All in all, for people like us, who live far far away from an Indian store anywhere near .. Apna Bazaar is still a deal good :)

Yelp
The market is superb. It's clean and well-stocked. I didn't get a chance to eat there, but it smelled great and the menu looked good.

Yelp
Highly over rated bazaar. Especially grocery section. Indian girl in the grocery counter has too much of attitude and rude. She does not have any curtesy of welcoming customers and engaging them. These people should learn from other groceries stores and how they treat customer with respect, especially with a smile. You just lost two customer. We'll never go again and will share our experience with our friends as well.

Yelp
This is an amazingly clean Indian grocery store that has all the basics you are probably looking for. And friendly workers too. In the same space as the restaurant. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Yelp
They have really good food and they have really good customer service, Umesh and Cruz and Whole team are the best. Best Indian food in Portland . Also they have fresh vegetable and groceries. The samosas biriyani and mango lassi are to die for. 5

Yelp
Found all I need & service is great. Store is very clean & well managed. Good inventory pretty much everything that is needed in Indian households. We tried there chat papri & it was delicious. Will must visit again.

Yelp
Aapna Bazaar is easily one of the best Indian stores in Portland metro area, both for Indian groceries and restaurants for Indian delicacies, well maintained, cleanliness, especially during this pandemic this is the only Indian store following all mandated rules and regulations, store properly marked, six feet distancing, masks and other precautions.

Yelp
As a grocery store, it's okay. Decent selection. But as a restaurant I DID NOT care for it. The man behind the counter was short and behaved rudely with my 8 year old sister and I. He scoffed when she asked to sample ice cream and was just not nice. The ice creams weren't labeled so we had no idea which was which and the man was not helpful, shrugging when I asked which flavor the pink one was. The bhel wasn't flavorful at all and the dahi puri was mediocre at best. Not worth the price. Edit: the bhel and chaat made me vomit two hours after I ate them
google avatar

Karen L.

Yelp
I'm definitely not an expert on Indian food, but does it help to have an Indian friend with you while ordering? It sure does! Our family enjoyed everything from the vada to the dosa. The mango lassi was on point especially for some of the spicier elements.

d g.

Yelp
Good place, good people, everyone hands on helping customers. They also have a fast food counter, decent food quality and taste. A great place if you need to get grocery on a Friday night and grab some dinner while you are at it. Fresh Veg stock is limited, but covers all we ate everyday in India.

Yelp
Not exactly sure why Apna Chaat Bhavan doesn't have a listing on Yelp, but I'm too lazy right now to right that wrong. Know that this review is for the restaurant and not the market that is adjacent to said restaurant. Sue and I found out about this place from some friends. I normally don't get out to Beaverton. Previous to coming here I usually only came out to Beaverton for the good Asian cuisine to can be found out this way. Now I know there is good Indian out here too. Upon walking in we knew we were in the right place. Practically everyone here was Indian. That is usually a very good sign. There is nothing exotic about this place at all. The only thing that really stood out was that it was very clean. There are no descriptions of the food on the menu. We were told the Samosas were good from our friends. We ordered 2 chicken samosas ($2.49 each) and they came with some spicy chutney's on the side. A good way to start the meal. After looking online at what some of these dishes were I ordered the Aloo Baingan (Eggplant and potatoes cooked together with chaat bhavan special spices, $6.99). I had been out of the eggplant game for quite some time, but now I'm getting back into it. Can't really describe this. It seemed like it was very simple, but quite complex at the same time. A good find in Beaverton.

Yelp
Products are not nice but very expensive. Found that a product cost 10$ can be bought at Winco for 8$ or less. Even Expensive during COVID-19 time.

Yelp
This review is primarily for the Apna Chaat Bhavan restaurant (adjacent to the grocery store). This place opened about a year ago and they have quickly become my favorite. Many of their dishes are south indian authentic. Gongura mutton: simply awesome (my favorite dish here). Chili chicken (spicy): Awesome. Chicken biryani: best in town (had it on multiple occasions).. Panneer Tikka masala: both times for catering: First time very good, on a recent order: pretty bad (it was actually sweet) Vegetable biryani: got this three times for catering: wasn't disappointed. Chili baby corn: got this three times for catering: very good at medium spice Chicken curry on catering menu was good too. Bhaigan Bhegara: Awesome: got it for catering. Punugulus: pretty good. Egg puffs: great. Chicken puff: not so great. Pastries: very good (black forest stands out). Their catering prices are reasonable.

Yelp
We loved our meals on a Saturday afternoon.. really tasty and complex flavors! I will be back to purchase some of the spices and veggies another time!

Yelp
I was recently in need up replenish my supply of spices. Although I moved to Portland from Beaverton, I thought I would return to Apana Bazaar. As we are still in the early stages of COVID19 I wondered if Apana Bazaar had delivery or curbside pickup. Although they did not deliver to Portland, Mr. Srinivas prepared my list of ingredients for quick pick-up. Upon returning home I discovered a mixup with one of the spices. After a bit of email communication and a phone call Mr. Srinivas saved me the 30 min trip to his store by mailing me the correct spice. Thank you Mr. Srinivas. The Good - Clean store. - Everything spaced put comfortably. - Competitive pricing. - Friendly and attentive staff. Asked twice if I needed any help while in the store. - Fast email responses. The Bad - Although the staff in the cafe (Apna Chat Bhavan ) wear gloves, they do so continuously while answering the phone, handling prepared foods, punching keys on the register, wiping down surfaces, etc. Seems to defeat the purpose of gloves if you use them while conducting all of the tasks. - Single-use gloves are made for a single use. Before beginning a new task, please change your gloves.

Yelp
Wonderful service , dedicated to make sure that fresh products are always available. Food is awesome , overall 5 stars for sure !

Noim N.

Yelp
I mainly like the Apna Bazaar's part where you can buy snacks. This is a inidian store which has snacks part as well as grocery part. I like mostly the snacks part. My fav was chat, somocha, pop-corn chicken. I recommend this place.

Elle H.

Yelp
I recently got an Instant Pot pressure cooker and ordered a wonderful Indian cooking recipe book. But my Indian spices consisted of a fairly tasteless box of old seasonings. Following suggestions in the cookbook I went to nearby Apna Bazar for necessary sounds and, of course, found a whole isle of whole packages of cloves, cardamom, turmeric and the like-at much less prices than the tiny tins of pre ground spices sold at Freddy's. This is the way to get flavor in my food. The service and helpfulness of employees was perfect for someone who has rarely been in an Indian grocery. Prices are good-seasonings are sold in clear cellulose bags do you see what you're getting. Also picked up dried lentils, green peas and chick peas. I could have purchased these from several other bulk foods groceries but I like patronizing local companies. I recommend this store for all your needs should you decide to tackle Indian cookery.

Bethany H.

Yelp
Excellent food; can't wait to go back again! Had my first dosa (masala) and loved it. Cashier recommended Chicken 65, and it was delicious! Stayed busy the whole time we were there, but reasonable wait times for our orders just the same. Plenty of leftovers for tomorrow!

Ti J.

Yelp
I love this place. Great selection of spices that are hard to find. A few aisles of grocery staples snacks, and tea. A few items like incense burners and small statues. Some decent kitchen goods. Aisles of self care products like henna, oils, shampoos, creams, and soaps. One the adjoining side of the building is a cafe with several fresh made hot dishes, snacks & desserts in a case to select. Not all of the dishes are to my taste, but most are good. The staff is great and I have never been disappointed there

Yelp
This review is for Duggal's chaat corner located inside Apna Bazaar. Yet another Indian grocery store, yet another chaat corner. They seem to be all over the place in Beaverton! While their menu is really limited when compared to India Direct (located a few blocks away), the quality is just as good. The chaats include the usual suspects - papri chaat, samosa chaat, raj khachori, bhel puri, pani puri. All very tasty and very reasonably priced at $4. You can also find the odd dessert or two. I find the gulab jamuns over here to be so much more yummier than what is served at some of the fancier Indian restaurants and they only cost $1 each. Dinner boxes are also available on weekdays. Plan to try them one of these days. Seating is very limited, about 4-5 small tables. Warm and friendly people run the chaat corner and eating over here comes with a rarely found feel good factor.
google avatar

Rohit S.

Yelp
They serve nice and fresh food on the weekends. The goat biryani is worth trying on the weekends

Hamel H.

Yelp
Quality has really declined. Food comes out very cold, they lose orders all the time. Tables and eating area is not properly cleaned or maintained. Much of the food is microwaved and not made fresh. Staff is not friendly. They are always out of menu items indicative of management that is not paying attention. Do not recommend.
google avatar

Melinda O.

Yelp
Wow! So my experience with Indian food has been limited to local lunch buffets, which I enjoy. I stumbled across this place and have been twice this week! Lunch special has 7 different items with rice. The half order if chicken biriyani could feed 4. My only suggestion would be to have something with English descriptions. Not sure what was in the special but was all delicious.
google avatar

Ashok R.

Yelp
Apna Bazaar is a great place to get your shopping done. Even if the prices are slightly on the higher side, we have consistently gone here since all the items are pretty fresh, neatly packed and best organized. The staff has almost always been very curteous and helpful. The store has some chat available at some times, and has really good video collections as well.
google avatar

Rashmi K.

Yelp
We have shopped here 4-5 times in the last 3 months. We were happy with the choices and enjoyed their restaurant next door too. The people there are very friendly. However, my last purchase was horrible! I bought three 2lb packets of daal and all three were completely rotten and stinky. The moment i Opened the bags I had to throw it in trash to avoid puking! There was no date on the packets so I can't tell if it was past the use by date. I would think they would check the dates and not have old stinky groceries. Unfortunately I didn't keep the receipt so I couldn't take it back.
google avatar

Leslie B.

Yelp
I have been buying my groceries here for many years. They were the first to have reliably good fresh Indian vegetables in the area. I cook mainly south Indian vegetarian cuisine. They have everything I need. I have celiacs on top of being vegetarian(not a great combo). I can actually buy frozen entrees that are very good. Nice to have a quick backup meal on busy days. I often will time my shopping with lunch so that I can have a masala dosa at the restaurant while there. Double bonus that I can even eat there and love what I am eating! They have just finished an extensive expansion and renovation. Selection is very good. 20 plus years ago I used to have to go to multiple Indian grocery stores to get everything I needed. Since Apna Bazaar opened I have made this my one stop shopping destination,

Yelp
This lil' market is located right next to the Orgon Food Bank so when a few co-workers and I were waiting for our shift to start, we took a gander in Apna. Cashier was super friendly and happy to point you in the right direction. The spices were absolutely amazing!!!! The girls ended up taking home a bunch of different spices. They also have a great selection of lentils and other legumes - veg heads, you could make the most amazing feasts with the ingredients in here. Small, but friendly and a great variety of items in spite of their size. Definitely worth checking out...
google avatar

Seema F.

Yelp
Since moving from the East Coast, I've had difficulty finding Indian spices for a reasonable price. I finally made the drive out to Beaverton, I'm glad Apna did not disappoint. I mainly came here for cumin seeds, curry leaves, atta, and methi leaves. I found all of those for a price much lower than the Portland standard prices, plus a bunch of other stuff I hadn't even thought about--like clay diyas and rangoli. My only complaint is that their items don't always have prices on them, particularly the frozen vegetables. The store is also a little hard to find, as most stores in this area are in office buildings with almost no store front.
google avatar

Stephano G.

Yelp
Very good quality produce and spices here. Also, the staff were extremely helpful and polite. They have some great prepared food in the back as well. I love when markets like these have places to snack while you decide how you are going to store the 14 new varieties of spices you've acquired. (the answer is "in a shoe box")

Manikanta N.

Yelp
Worst food... Ordered Ghobi Manchuria which is half cooked and order chili chicken Appetizer which turned out to be a chicken curry.

K C.

Yelp
Nice selection of products, organized for the most part, and staff was helpful in finding what I was looking for. Night 'n day difference from the previous grocery I visited nearby.
google avatar

Prashanth N.

Yelp
I have been going there for last few years, good products, nice staff. I took some of my American friends too. The only issue they faced was that some of the frozen products had no price tags.
google avatar

Brie P.

Yelp
Grocery Store: There is a good selection of brands here, which for me is prefect because I tend to buy the different Marsala mixes Great Fresh Veggies and Frozen Section. Restaurant: Apna recently took over the adjacent office and made it into a restaurant...which is pretty darn good and reasonably priced.
google avatar

K N.

Yelp
Best South Indian place, that i know of, in this area. I love their weekday thalis and goat biryani.
google avatar

Jennifer P.

Yelp
The food here was amazing and nearly identical to what you get in India. Everything we ordered was good except for the chicken lollipop which was unlike any I had seen in the past and is best avoided.
google avatar

Angik S.

Yelp
This review is for the restaurant. We had the non veg thali. Amazing food and volume. Their chicken curry reminded me of the curry in India. Will return again.

Ganesh K.

Yelp
This review is for Grocery. It is very nicely kept and well stocked place. Though there isn't much options or range of products like Indian supermarket, which is nearby. It is good enough for regular grocery. Vegetables are mostly fresh, but would be happy to see more options. Prices are comparable to other stores, sometime lower than others. Everything is labeled properly. Cashiers are friendly and quick. Regarding restaurant: There samosa's are sour, samosa's shouldn't be sour. The chutany was not fresh. We also tried ice-cream. Taste wise, it is good, but the scoop is not fully served. We took to-go, and when we reached home, we saw single scoop was not even half. Also size of scoop is really small. Not acceptable.

Roz L.

Yelp
Not impressed. Unfriendly staff, attempted to return an item which was returnable and was not assisted. As there are choices in the immediate area, we will not return to this store.
google avatar

Kay S.

Yelp
Apna Bazaar has a great selection and friendly staff. The prices are reasonably economical. The restaurant in the back has incredible snacks to finish off the shopping! We got the pani poori kit, and had a fun time making pani poori with friends.
