25 Essential South Bay Area Restaurants

"Apni Mandi, formerly known as Apna Bazaar, is a 24/7 Indian grocery store that sells chaat, flatbread, and a collection of vegetarian entrees. Try the dahi puri, or fried semolina puffs filled with onions and potatoes dressed with yogurt and mint chutney. The aloo bhaji, potato curry made with onions, tomatoes, and spices, is another favorite. Sip on a cup of free chai while waiting in line and enjoy your feast in the outdoor seating area." - Octavio Pena, Cathy Park

Tried the fresh food from the food corner in the supermarket. I tried a few things : 1. Onion samosa - very good 2. Paneer puff - Not good. 3. Bombay sandwich plus chips. The chips were exactly like the ones I had had in India.. the sandwich though.. was not good. It has all the right elements but it doesnt have any sauces. Its dry and they need to add some masala as well. Wouldnt recommend it, plus it took atleast 15-20 mins to prepare. Not worth it. I will try the chaats next time. Prices are convenient, and you can get a full meal for a nominal price - so do check out the place for full meals. I like that i found Vadilal flavours that i like from india - badam carnival, kaju draksht, rajbhog kulfi.

Apni Mundi Food 20+ Items on the menu. Ranging from starters, Indo Chinese to entrees. They have daily specials, lunch/dinner thali, breakfast. They have fresh roti for 5 or 10 pack. Mango Lassi, chaas, achaar, and chutney you can buy from the mini fridge. You can order the food in a small, medium, or large containers. Containers are wrapped in plastic wrap for a more secure togo experience. Everyone that I saw had on gloves when handling the food. You can buy 10 different types of paan from here. Right next to the paan section there is free chai. Right across from the paan station. There is a sweets section 20+ different types of sweets/pastries Couple boxes to choose from if you are planning to give it away as a gift. Before you enter the grocery store you can see a big yellow pani poori stand! Mint, Green Mango, Tamarind/Imli, Anar and Khaatta Meetha flavors to choose from. Place is packed all the time because…. they’re 24 hrs!! The grocery store is more spread out with several aisles to shop from. But the food ordering line can get a bit long and congested. Parking isn’t too bad, closer you try to park more packed it can get. Grocery store is part of a shopping center with numerous other establishments sharing the parking lot. There are two restrooms inside the building. Outside there are several tables with tents. Staff that’s taking orders are friendly and try to be fast! Overall. Food that I have gotten (5 pack roti + potato curry) has been fresh, and clean. Many options to choose from and it’s part of a grocery store. Worth stopping by. You’re bound to buy something. Clean, organized, well stocked.

I actually like Apni Mandi and have shopped here many times. The produce and Indian groceries are solid, and it’s convenient for me since I live nearby and don’t own a car. Today really killed it for me though. I came on my light electric scooter, walking it, not riding inside. The way it was handled was just bad. The moment I stepped in, an employee just said something like “scooter not allowed” and blocked me. No “hey, you can park it here,” no suggestion, no help. Just a hard no. I wasn’t trying to zip around the aisles. I just wanted to bring a small, light scooter in with me so I could shop safely without worrying about it being stolen outside. For a neighborhood store that a lot of people without cars rely on, this policy (and the way it’s enforced) makes the place feel really unwelcoming. It sends a pretty clear message that if you don’t drive, you’re a problem to them, not a customer. I’d rather take my regular shopping somewhere that doesn’t make it this hard just to buy groceries. What really annoys me is that this isn’t a one-off vibe. If you look at their Google reviews, they barely respond to negative feedback. That tells you everything about how much they actually care about customers. Giving a 1 star review for the experience I had.

Google
I came to this Indian store to look for Mango pickle and found all sorts of different varieties. They have everything your looking for your Indian shopping needs. Lots of overseas items.. People are friendly and the place is nicely organized.

Google
What a super store, like everything from idols, flowers, decoration items, groceries, vegetables, milk products and you name it and they have it. Surprise, tea on the house. Enjoyed shopping while sipping a strong cup of tea

Google
Lots of vegetable options Indian groceries rice doll there is also restaurant that sells some food, fruits, fresh vegetables, a lot of Diwali items decoration items. They have few benches outside overall the store is well packed in the price is little higher, but otherwise it was a good experience. Multiple checkout lines.

Google
It’s not worth putting your hard-earned money into this store, because you can’t trust the quality of what you’re buying. We purchased a sealed item from their shelves and found it spoiled. While they may not manufacture the product, they choose to sell it and are responsible for ensuring basic safety and quality. The manager himself tasted the spoiled item, acknowledged it was bad, and still took no responsibility, offered no apology, and provided no compensation. If this is how they handle a clear health and safety issue in front of a customer, it raises serious questions about the oversight and standards within the store. Shoppers should only purchase items they can visually verify for freshness, such as produce. Packed items may be old stock left unsupervised and sold without proper checks.

Google
This is used to be ok place to buy Indian groceries, though quality was all over the place depending on what you buy. Recently bought Roasted Channa Daal in plastic container that looked ok (they have them stacked at multiple places around the store), but turned out be stale/rancid. Luckily I found the receipt, took the item back to store and explained to the customer service about the item being stale and asked for refund or replace with good one. They REFUSED! They said the expiry date on the container is 2028, so it should be good. Wow, what a customer service. Needless to say, they lost a customer for good!

Yelp
We love it here so much - where else can you get delicious samosas (and other great dishes) at 2 in the morning?? Granted, we have not yet been that late, but I love that it's an option. We have been at different times of the day and night and even though the line for the hot food can get full, it always moves pretty fast. We always get the dinner combo meals and it's enough for leftovers the next day. We also always get extra red and green sauces because they are just that good. We are grateful to them for being patient with us for stumbling over the items while ordering since we don't always know what's what :) Also, yay for free chai!!

Yelp
Right off the bat I will say this market is opened 24 hours and at any time of the day anyone can come in and get a cup of free hot chai and no 1 will harass you that you didn't buy anything so no free chai for you! And, if you're hungry at 3 am and can't sleep, come to Apni for freshly prepared food at very reasonable prices from the food stall inside. This is what I love about this market. I have gone to the Apni Mandi in the Irvington district of Fremont but did not care about that market. For starters, no free hot chai on these cold days. That's not okay, so I happily come to this location.

Yelp
Woahhh I'm shocked this place has only 3 stars (at the time of this review). Everything I've had here is wonderful!! Then again, it is a food counter in a grocery store so you probably wouldn't get the service you'd expect at a restaurant. But I LOVE everything here except the palak paneer but that's because I simply don't vibe with palak or any saag dishes, it's just a personal preference. Love their chole bature, paneer kulcha, Chili paneer, kadhi, samosas, all chaats, gajar halwa. I especially love how affordable this place is. You can get a DELICIOUS 3 item thali for under $10 and it also comes with 2 rotis and rice. Solid deal. Oh and they have free delicious chai, I mean, come on. Five stars all the way for me.

Ash V.

Yelp
Their food from the kitchen is pretty awesome. A big fan of their Amritsari Kulcha and Chole. The service is good and pretty friendly staff. And the fact that it's open long hours makes it easy to go and pick when the store is not crowded. I accidently stopped by here for a quick chaat but then fell in love with all items in the kitchen. Good quantity, reasonable prices and delicious food.

Yelp
I love love the samosas here! I have had some bad experiences with the staff but its been a long time I dont shop here often except when there is an emergency or if I want to eat the samosa. Their kitchen is open 24 hours which is great. And dont forget the free chai. Lately their samosa size has been decreasing very much. It is supposed to be a LARGE SAMOSA and they charge you accordingly for a LARGE. But the size is almost like a normal samosa sometimes even smaller. The paneer has disappeared too. I still love the taste though. Enough about samosas for today.

Yelp
The vibes here are always really nice and lively and the food is pretty affordable. Sometimes they do skimp out on the portions but it's okay because it's pretty reasonably priced. The line can get long and parking is always a mess, but worth it to come here.

Yelp
Paan here is fresh, juicy, filling. They have so many fancy varieties. One is enough.

Samantha M.

Yelp
Vada pav does not have Garlic chutney (lasoon dry chutney) which is an essential component of vada pav. Anywhere else you order vada pav, it comes with the chutney already spread on the bun. Here it's a plain bun with a fried aloo bonda inside. They toss a couple of containers of green chutney and sweet chutney (the same one provided with samosas) into your Togo bag (for which you get charged 10 cents) but the flavors are missing. Don't have vada pav here! Dahi puri, sev puri and chai are all good.

Yelp
They changed the Indian grocery market business forever by bringing in 24/7 hours of operation and a whole new level of customer service.

Yelp
If I could give this place a zero star I would but the don't have that option I live close by and like to explore my options when it comes to groceries for budget reasons well I went there today and two of the cashiers are quite rude so I took my business and went somewhere else feeling very disappointed with the staff they need training in customer service that is not how you treat customers they lost one for sure.

Vijay S.

Yelp
Poor customer service! Clover 2% organic milk 1 Gal was spoiled on first use within hours of purchase. Store agreed to refund on the phone, but then refused when visited the store.

Manish M.

Yelp
Cholle Bhatura 6 months before was nice and big but now they made it worse. It's only that we are eating pure maida and small in size. Bhatura dough has 8 ingredients but looks like they removed suji and curd from the dough and saving some cost. That's how you loose your name in market when you cut corner in quality. Why in and out , McDonald are successful becuase come what may they maintain quality and don't change often You can increase price but don't cut ingredients and maintain quality. Only good part is free chai here which is pulling factor.

Yelp
very rude and customer service absolutely zero. we bought a mixie and one of the cups is not working after week we bought. we went to the store to return and exchange for another brand for more money. the lady who was so called manager thinks she is giving away stuff free treated us very bad. Please stay away from this store.

Sidhant G.

Yelp
Ridiculously arrogant and rude staff. Its clear that employees have no interest in helping customers or providing a positive shopping experience. A particular staff member talked to me in a condescending tone when I was looking for a particular item and shuffling through the stock
