How DILL Put Iceland’s Cuisine on the Culinary Map

"Originally one of Reykjavík’s largest buildings, the Apótek Hotel dates back to 1917 and features contemporary design with 45 rooms." - Ali Wunderman

"Built in 1907 by the same architect who designed the National Theatre and Hallgrímskirkja church, Apotek is full of historical resonance. The Art Nouveau–style building was once the country’s largest edifice and served as the city’s primary pharmacy from 1930 to 1999, a distinction that gave the hotel its name when it opened in 2014. The property’s 45 rooms blendelements of the past while seamlessly incorporating modern design touches, employing neutral colors, parquet floors, and simple-but-refined furnishings to create a sense of calm; subway-tiled bathrooms with walk-in showers have a bright, clean look. You don’t have to wander far to enjoy one of the busiest watering holes in Reykjavik: Apotek Kitchen + Bar is a hot spot for artisan beverages, where cocktail “pharmacists” craft potions for every ailment. Bonus: Not only does it overlook the Austurvöllur park, it’s just around the corner from the Icelandic Punk Museum."

Apótek Hotel Reykjavík (Reykjavik, Iceland) 2 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Reykjavík’s Apótek Hotel occupies a distinctive building — it was designed in 1917 by Guðjón Samúelsson, who would later be famous for the city’s monumental, modernist Hallgrímskirkja church. Inside the Apotek are 45 rooms that blend century-old Art Nouveau architecture with contemporary design, all in service of a lively, modern boutique-hotel experience. This is a compact city already, and the Apótek is convenient to just about everything, set a block away from the parliament house at the west end of the city center. But there’s reason to stay in as well; the open-plan Apotek Kitchen + Bar incorporates an Argentine grill, and its bartenders dress in white pharmacists’ coats." - Tablet Hotels

The hotel has old world charm and our room was large. The beds were great and the bathroom was modern. The stay did not start well. It was raining and the hotel does not have any place to stop and unload. So you must pull onto the sidewalk to unload. Then just try to find a place to park. The hotel gives you a map to the city hall parking, three blocks away. Sure, it's raining and I have no clue which way to go on one way streets. A Valet would be helpful. This was not an inexpensive room and a parking service should be provided. The breakfast was excellent. If you are driving a car I cannot recommend this hotel. If you are arriving by taxi the location is fantastic.

We so enjoyed our stay at this hotel from the friendly front desk staff to the delicious restaurant food. The breakfast was amazing and we also enjoyed their dinner. The hotel is in a perfect location and easily walkable to the shops, bars and restaurants. The room is very comfortable, clean and we loved the extra perks of the bathrobes and that you could open the windows. All in all, we had an excellent 4 night stay! Highly recommend!

Very nice hotel in a perfect location right in the center of everything. Anything you may want to see in the city is an easy walk from this location. The room itself was nicely appointed with two TVs and a nice bathroom with a great shower. The bed was very comfortable and the windows open, which was great for getting some fresh air in the evenings. The staff couldn't have been nicer and more helpful and they made our stay a pleasure. By the way, if you find you have trouble making dinner reservations (lots of places book up it seems), ask the front desk, they were able to get us reservations at a place that was booked solid for the night. We opted for including the buffet breakfast at the hotel dining room and it was excellent. A big spread of all sorts of meats/cheeses/fruit/eggs/pastries, yogurt, oatmeal, etc.||The only reason I didn't give this hotel 5 stars is because the central location is a double-edged sword. Two nights of our stay, the Bar/restaurant across the street was very busy, very late into the night, with loud music, loud people singing and having fun and being noisy. Great for them, not great for tired travelers trying to sleep. If noise bothers you, you might want to consider another hotel.

Small-ish rooms, but nice. Don't know if there are ice machines, but I didn't find any. Windows that actually open, and my favorite part is that there was a fan in the room in the closet. Mini fridge works, but you should probably turn it up when you get there and also leave the cabinet door open because it gets overheated. Friendly, helpful staff. Great location. Restaurants & bars close. 7-11 store that's open 24 hours for food & convenience store items half a block away. Half the price of the hotel across the park from it (which we stayed at last summer and was nice). Showers have great water pressure & the water is clean, delicious, & cold out of the faucet. :)

Staff is very friendly. They had the best shower set up, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion. Bed was very comfortable. Coffee pods in the room were great, though I could have used a couple of extra sugar and cream packets. Location can be noisy

Desk staff was fantastic. They were able to get us into our room early after a long flight. The bar drinks were excellent and the servers very helpful. We very much enjoyed the location as it was a very short walk to breakfast and other lunch spots.
