In-Person Iftar: Where Montreal’s Muslim Community Goes to Break Fast During Ramadan | Eater Montreal

"This Parc-Ex Bangladeshi restaurant is pulling out all the stops for Iftar. The family-owned restaurant opened for Ramadan in 2018 and they’ve been waiting, like everyone, to enjoy breaking their fast as a community. Appayon is planning a buffet to meet the initial needs of hungry fasters, opening up the kitchen for other dishes after the rush. Special Bangladeshi offerings include the vegetarian snack piaju—deep-fried lentils with turmeric, onions, and ginger, and chana (black chickpeas and potatoes)—as well as beef halim and biryani also on the menu." - Ivy Lerner-Frank

Excellent Bangladeshi restaurant near Montreal downtown. A small but very focused menu with many good options. Loved the fish and meat preparation. Staff were wonderful and very courteous. Hasan, Nasir were awesome!

If you are looking for authentic Bengali cuisine in Montreal I would highly recommend Appayon! We ordered 1) Appayon special combo( 8.5/10) 2) beef tehari (8/10) (beef was soft and tender) 3) shutki vorta - (6.5/10) (it was not that spicy) 4) rup chada mach - (7.5/10) 5) beef bhuna (8.5/10) 6) dudh cha (8.5/10) Portion size is good and the food was really yummy! Staff and service was good . Price is reasonable. ** Their appayon special roast was too good just like Bangladesh’s bie barir roast.

I’m from Toronto visiting Montréal for 2 days and I had lunch here and honestly I’ve heard a lot about this place and it’s actually so good.

Really authentic bangla Food in Montreal. We really enjoyed. Their Pulao and Chicken Bhuna were awesome.

I went on a Tuesday evening. Everything was good and worth it as I was full. The food came fast as well. They give onions and spice on the side as well which is a nice addition. The mango lassi was made well as well. The tuna kebab had too much oil however and there was a small piece of metal in my dish(beef tehari). The situation was resolved with no issue whatsoever.

We ordered food for iftar. Authentic Bangladeshi taste, the quality and quantity was good. We ordered their beef biriyani, chicken roast and mutton haleem for 7 people. The biriyani came with salad as well.

Yelp
Was excited to try this Bengali restaurant. The restaurant itself isn't attractive; it looks like a canteen. They didn't not have any of entrees to serve. Then we ordered Kacchi biryani, made of mutton (special of the day). The spices were good, but the meat was too dry and the potatoes were under cooked. The chai was good though. As per service, it was very cold. They never checked on us if we were enjoying our food. When they charged us, they already included the tips which was very presumptuous and awful. The biryani was overpriced. I think this was our first and last time here.

Yelp
The only authentic Bangladeshi Restaurant in Montreal. There are four different main chefs so even though the menu is consistent, everytime the taste of any one item is slightly different but equally good. As a Bangladeshi, I would highly recommend them.

Yelp
We went there for iftar buffet during Ramadan. The number of items were alright and there were few dishes that was good but nothing special. What really bothered me is the service. As soon as people started breaking their fast, the fruit bowl became empty - which is understandable since its integral part of most iftars these days. Same thing happened to salad. But after that they didn't refill it and the rest of the customers essentially had no fruit to take. When my husband asked they brought just a few more "pieces". Moreover towards the end they came to each table and asked if we want a cup of tea. Thankfully my friend who had been there told me that they charge extra for tea. I found it amusing that they just ask if we want tea without clarifying if we want to "order" tea as well. Growing up in Bangladesh, I know how Bangladeshi food should taste. Even though Appayon didn't meet my expectation I can let it go - after all its in Montreal. But that doesn't excuse them from their lackluster service

Yelp
It was really good. The food was yummy and fresh. We got to go to a Bangladeshi restaurant after a long time.

Yelp
I new to the Bangladeshi food scene in Montreal. When I discovered Appayon I was truly excited to try it out-as it one of the first trending restaurants of its type. More fast food styled, the walls are painted green with the color scheme of the Bangladeshi flag. I was surprised with how affordable everything was! I ordered their weekly house special (changes every week) that cake with a chicken liver curry, egg plant curry, salad, a fish potato kebab and rice for under 13$. The food was plenty for 2 of us! I loved how the dishes weren't too spicy for my taste that I ate all my food. Service is spot on, staff is so friendly and amiable. I really love this spot. If you want some authentic cuisine / you have to try out this Bangladeshi staple !

Yelp
The only actual Bangladeshi restaurant in Montreal. With true bengali style beef and chicken curries. Really tasty food, quite authentic. Needs more variety in the dishes though but all in all great food. The decor leaves to be desired though, but for the price, can't complain. Beware the cuisine will not taste the same as your typical Indian curries you would find walking down Jean-Talon close by.

Yelp
Ok so I am going to give a detailed review of this place. Bare with me. Appayon is an authentic Bangladeshi restaurant based in parc, Montreal. It's the first of its kind here in this city. The food here basically reminds me of home. So I've been to this restaurant just once, as a fairly new restaurant celebrating it's 1st anniversary with its ramadan special which is what I went for, the iftar buffet. This consisted of several items such as pilau, chicken roast, beef rezala, egg korma, soft khichdi, fried items: piyaju, veg pakora, potato chop, eggplant and then there was chhola, salad, puffed rice, fruits and dates. This buffet also consists of juice and water. I honestly didnt expect much considering the countless Indian restautants I have been to, either here or the UK; no matter how low my expectation are, I usually get disappointed. Appayon however, pleasantly surprised me. They items were not only satisfactory but so much more. I loved the Halim, which was a piece of Dhaka that I have missed all these years abroad. It was delicious with the perfect consistency, and had the perfect combination of spices. The beef rezala was amazing; I am honestly never satisfied with beef rezala anywhere but Appayon has truly done it with their cooking, it tasted like my grandma's rezala. The fried stuff were all crunchy yet tasty, the potato chop tasted amazing and I loved how they used mustard oil instead of vegetable oil. The service was good too, they constantly kept refilling the food, keeping them warm and fresh. The owners were very professional and were very pleasant. I took some pan masala at the end from the counter and one of the owners even offered to give me a container, obviously noticing how crazy I was about them. I am truly overwhelmed with the food and service of the people running this place, and all of this for just $16. I urge you go and give this place a try whether you are Bangladeshi or not, this place will give you a true taste of Bangladeshi food, and you WILL love it.

Yelp
Decent value but every dish was too oily for my tastes. Don't tell the US about this place or they'd invade it.

Yelp
Good Bangladeshi restaurant that opened up recently. I think this is the only Bangladeshi restaurant in Montreal. Will come back again for sure.

Yelp
Great spot, simple, " elevated " food. Nice depth of flavour, very well done... and affordable! definitely worth trying if you're in the neighbourhood.

Yelp
This place is amazing!! Tastes just like eating the best home-cooked food in Bangladesh. Everything we tried was amazing and very fresh. Get the hot milk tea at the end--it's delicious. You get the real deal here, not cooking adapted to fit a generic Indian restaurant menu. If you're not familiar with Bangladeshi cooking, it is lighter with more subtle spicing (but still spicy!) and flavors than your typical Indian restaurant food, which is generally heavier, with cream-based sauces. I especially loved the aloo chop, chana masala, and dal---but everything we tried was great. Looking forward to trying everything. Service was great, too. This place is a gem-- you don't find this kind of cooking outside of a Bengali home.
