5 Canadian Cookbooks That Offer a Unique Sense of Place

"For nearly 20 years, I’ve been entrenched in the world of cookbooks. As a chef I’ve cooked out of more than 2,000 of them (truly!), and since 2005 I’ve been the owner of [the cookbook shop], a cookbook shop in Montreal." The owner started the shop in 2005 and runs it as a specialist independent cookbook store; the shop is presented as a place to discover new volumes of dishes, storytelling, and photography and as a way to see cookbooks as "a snapshot in time of a country’s cuisine," preserving historical dishes and capturing modern classics across Canada’s diverse foodways." - Jonathan Cheung

Google
What an awesome store!!!! I was visiting a friend in Montreal and she brought me here as our premiere destination on a Foodie shopping tour. The store carries only cookbooks and oh SO many cookbooks.....sorted in to Ethnicitys. Baking, Pasta, Cocktails, you name the classification and they have it! The staff are friendly and personable and know their stuff. They are great about answering questions and giving recommendations. Not only do they sell Cookbooks galore they also give cooking lessons in the kitchen which is also located within the store. We had so much fun!!! I bought three cookbooks! :)

Had a great experience at the knife skills class taught by Jonathan! I learned a lot of tips that I know I’ll apply in my daily cooking, and I appreciated that the class was so hands on. The food that was served was delicious too!

I recently attended a vegan cooking class taught by Ricardo, and it was an incredible experience! Ricardo is such a charismatic and knowledgeable teacher, making the class both fun and inspiring. It was wonderful to be surrounded by people who love talking about food as much as I do, all while being treated to Ricardo’s delicious cooking and insights. I left full of great food and even more knowledge. I will definitely be signing up for another class!

What an incredible experience with Chef John for our cooking class! Our group of 9 had an amazing time — the food was absolutely delicious, and the atmosphere made it even more special. Such a unique and awesome bookstore setting too. Highly recommend!

Google
A wonderful store! Not only do I find amazing cookbooks, I also get my knives sharpened with their drop off service! I have met authors and had delicious food at book signings, and I have the opportunity to take classes! A business that supports the community with charity events, signings and much more.

Google
I’ve always loved supporting your store, choosing it over larger retailers because of the great service and personal touch. Unfortunately, my recent experience has been a little disappointing but I appreciate how it was taken care of. I registered online for a cooking class as a gift for my dad. Although the site showed availability, I later received an email saying the class was full. I understand mistakes happen and furthermore Jonathan went above and beyond to reach out to me. My parents are now registered for a class that I know they will love!

Google
About the cooking classes, Johnathan, the owner and chef, is part artist, part scientist, part magician and part educator. He is a food hero who wears his cape on the front while he spins his magic to delight our senses and inform our understanding of the delicious and the delectable. This guy and this store are absolutely amazing. Treat yourself or a foodie that you care about to a truly wonderful experience. You will savor. You will spend quality time. You will learn and you will celebrate the wonders of this fundamental, ever-present art form. Bonne appetite

Yelp
A friend mentioned that she loves this local cooking book store so we had to check it out. I found a few baking centric books and we enjoyed chatting with the staff. Appreciate her recommendations on where to explore and eat while in Montreal. Fabulous coffee pastry shop next store too. Not too far from the underground stop.

Yelp
If you're searching for a particular cookbook and haven't been able to find it anywhere else, chances are you'll find it here. Beautifully lit, cookbooks here are organized by type and genre (i.e French, Italian, Indian, etc.), you're bound to find something here. The back part of the shop is where they hold cooking classes, often with known Montreal cooks and chefs. If you check out their website, you'll see that most of these workshops are already sold-out, so if you're like me and like taking a refresher course once in a while, then keep an eye open and register early. Jonathan Cheung is also very friendly and chances are if you can't find what you're looking, he'll be able to help you out and get it. Mind you, it's not cheap. Most of the books are actually hardcover, not paperback so the quality is there.

Yelp
Not Montreal's only cookbook and food lit specialty bookstore, but certainly its best. A large collection of books in English and French (but mostly English) + a full-service kitchen makes Appetite for Books an ideal location for culinary book launches and cooking classes, and they don't hold back. Check out their website for a complete list of upcoming events, and act fast if you see something you like--their series of events is very, very popular.

Yelp
What a great name for this concept. I was invited to have dinner and Chef Jonathan Cheung was going to entertain us. This is a cook book store that is devoted to food and the occasional tasting. The store is attractive and is surrounded by various cookbooks by well known chefs. The kitchen is in the back of the store. We were about 10 people sitting around the bar table. Great! We introduced ourselves to each other and socialized throughout this event. We were going to have 3 dinners taken from the cookbook that is made under an hour. Jonathan also gives cooking class during the week in this book store. Our first dish was chorizo corn and tomato tostada with lime cream. It was light with wonderful flavours. Our next dish was ricotta gnocchi with garlic cherry tomatoes. Our final meal was the Pomegranate-glazed chicken with a warm farro salad. That was scrumptious. Some of the flavours were newly introduced to me so I was definitely open to buy this cookbook and I did. Dessert was not in the book but Chef Jonathan decided to make a blueberry Galette with a dollop of whipped cream. This whole evening was just fun. He picked up all fresh produce at Jean Talon market and that makes a difference. If you ever have the opportunity to get invited to this tasting don't hesitate because you will have the most entertaining evening . Thank you Jonathan Cheung!

Yelp
Very inviting, open well-lit space, classes given , wide selection of cookbooks;if there is something you want but it's out of print, just ask the owner, Jonathan Cheung , and he'll see if he can get it for you online. I was looking for a book by the cake bible belter herself, that's been out of print for a number of years, & he got a mint condition copy for me, at a very good price. If you're a supercook or just a foodie, this is the place.

Yelp
It's a very attractive store with a lot of attention paid to the kitchen in the back where they give cooking courses that are very popular. I was there to browse the books. The prices of these books are a little overwhelming and there wasn't nearly as much selection as I had expected, considering it was a cookbook store. I will probably shop elsewhere.
