Pepperoni Rolls Are a Classic Dish in the Rust Belt and Appalachia | Eater

"Showing a bit of hometown love, I consider the Apple Castle orchard and market a treasure trove and worth a detour: though apples are their specialty, they also make a mighty fine pepperoni roll stuffed with hot banana peppers and mozzarella — plush, greasy, spicy, and on the smaller side, so pick up a few because they sell out." - Danny Palumbo

Google
Apple castle was a recommendation and it did not disappoint. What a great farmers market with lots to choose from, reasonable prices, and friendly staff. Fresh produce, delicious donuts, apple cider slushies, ect. Their honeycrisp applesauce is so good! Ample parking. A must to check out.

Google
First of all, I wanna say that I absolutely love this store. It was really cool to shop at. they have grocery carts so you can put some things in. They have a deli that you can buy fresh deli meat and they also have a bakery and they do have a bathroom so that’s good for the public and then outside they have where we could shop for pumpkins and also they had apple trees that you could pick your own from which I thought was really cool so it’s a great place to visit they have lots of parking, but I have to say about the items I wasn’t very happy now I’ve tried a few things not all of it that I’ve bought. I’ve tried yet., but so far the apple and cherry fritters I bought seemed like they were not very fresh more on the day or two old side. Then I’ve tried the apple cider and it has a very funny or odd taste it’s just not right. Not nasty , but not something I’d buy anymore. But there’s a lot to choose from, so 4 stars and I’d recommend a visit. Also it is a little on the pricey side so definitely be prepared to spend money. They take Apple Pay , so that’s a plus!

Awesome Grocery store for fruits and vegetables! Lots of jams and jellies as well as bakery items. Excellent friendly staff too. A destination for the family.

Google
I'm from North Carolina, and I recently indulged in a pie called the Very Berry Pie. Without a doubt, it's the best pie I've ever had in my 43 years on this earth. The outstanding customer service added to the experienceeveryone was super friendly and helpful, and the place was impressively clean and organized. I highly recommend Apple Castle!

Google
Never heard of the Apple Castle (we are not from the area) but happened to see a sign for it and decided to check it out. Pretty cool place with lots of goodies especially when we visited, the fall! It was so colorful and the 🍎 🍏s are delicious! We even met a cool 🐈 catching a nap on the hay. If you happen to be in the area, definitely worth a visit!

I looked at places that were Amish and this place came up. They sell Amish products but they are not Amish. I live around Walnut Creek so I thought I was getting Amish on that level. When I came in it was just a shop that sells commercial Amish items. It is a cute shop and everyone was nice. I did buy two packs of cookies. When I was looking through the packaged goods they were the same items but priced differently. I don't know if it's human error or they are trying to trick people.

Google
Loved the old building as it was a great place to visit. But the new building is bigger and they have a lot more to offer. The donuts are amazing oh and the apple cider slushy… soo good! Great place! They have their own Apple orchards and they sell apple chips and logs for smokers or fires.

Google
We go here from Pittsburgh every year to pick up our order of tart cherries and always end up going home with way more. Great farm market. Their many apple varieties and their house made donuts are particular standouts. And the people are so helpful and friendly.

Yelp
Ok, I kind of have an addiction. I've been here three weeks in a row (and I don't live all that close). The maple iced donuts are still making me teary; I wish they'd sell the icing by the bowl so I could eat it with a spoon. But even I wouldn't drive this far this often just for donuts. The first week it was the peaches that brought me back, because I'm just not finding decent peaches in grocery stores. But then last week I also tried a couple ears of corn, and it was quite possibly the best I've ever had, so I had to come back this week to get a bunch more of that. This place just makes me happy.

Yelp
For those who know Trader Joe's, this place is that but 10x's better! Everything is grown local and looks super fresh. So sorry I didn't take pix. I was so excited looking at all the produce, nuts, fresh butters, baked good, meats, and cheeses! If I lived near by, this would be my go to for all-things-grown! Most everything is made here. Prices are more than reasonable. In fact, for the quality and size of their produce, you'll feel like you owe them money. Sad I didn't bring a bigger suitcase. I'd love to take back some local honey! Tomatoes were huge and white notions were the size of cantaloupes! Speaking of cantaloupes, I bought half a cantaloupe for $2 and it was the sweetest, juiciest melon I've ever had! This was a treasure stop!

Yelp
Beautiful produce at good prices. Tons of fun little baked goods and treats. A great way to shop local! Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Came in while visiting family. Great selection and the evercrisp apples were the best we've ever had. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Angel M.

Yelp
Cute! The workers were polite and moved quickly. I highly recommend their raspberry lemonade slushee. It's very good! The produce was a little small in supply I feel but for a small farm that grows everything themself I am not surprised.

Yelp
My daughter has been raving about their donuts and goodies, so we trooped out there on Labor day the place is very clean with a-lot of fresh produce to choose from they also have a bakery and sell meats and dairy. But the best thing was the Apple Picking ! The apples were easy to pick my grandson had a blast filling up the bags. This orchard has many varieties to choose from, look up online to see what day your favorite apple is available for the picking . We will definitely be back!

Louise G.

Yelp
Large selection of fresh produce, cheeses, and novelty candy items. Great shopping experience.

Debbie C.

Yelp
My parents and grandparents have shopped here for years. Yesterday was my last visit ever! They have the nastiest cashier ever. So disappointed!

Yelp
Cute off the beaten path store. The corn was delicious! Donuts were ok. Definitely a place to go check out. Just like the other store in the area they don't sell ice. If you plan on bringing a cooler for your cold cuts bring ice.

Yelp

Yelp
If you are an apple lover then you've come to the right place. Apple Castle is a small farm market that specializes in different types of apples as well as their own homemade donuts. Apples are sold by the peck, half peck, and by the pound depending upon what you need. They sell their own applesauce which is jarred according to the flavor of apple you want. Everything is locally grown. They also sell an assortment of fresh vegetables and fruits with strawberries currently in high demand at the present time. In their refrigerator you can find various cheeses, dairy, and their own homemade apple cider. Scattered around the store you can find Amish noodles, candies, and even jarred honey since they have an actual working beehive on the premises. If you are a lover of jelly or jams then they have a great selection to choose from including sugar free. Outside is a playground area which is not in use due to the pandemic. Masks are required while on the premises. I was pleased to see the first of the zucchini which caught my eye upon entering so I grabbed one of those. Most of the vegetables appeared very fresh so it was easy for me to buy without having to sort though items. A limited edition apple called "evercrisp" sold for $1.00 more per pound but since I've never had that variety I decided to purchase a few. Regular apples sell for $1.49 pound but this variety sells for $2.49 pound. Onto the donut section where you can buy an individual fresh made donut for $.90 or purchase a half dozen or dozen to save money. The counter lady had cherry donuts today in addition to her regular applespice with cinnamon sugar. More choices included honeywheat glazed, vanilla or chocolate icing and jimmies. I purchased half a dozen assortment and a single serve size of their homemade apple cider. I ate the cherry donut in the car and is was just as good as the baker said it would be! The cider was also very good. You could taste the flavor of the apple itself in the cider. This is a great place to get farm fresh goodness and I definitely plan to return next time I'm in the area. Located on State Rt 18 near New Wilmington they have their own parking lot.

Yelp
Used to drive an hour for six dozen apple honey wheat glazed donuts. The recipe has changed and these donuts are now well below average and very dry. Old recipe used to make them so glazed they were almost wet with sugar goodness. No idea why they would alter that original recipe. Been bad last 2-3 visits over recent months. Feels like since the new building they have been bad

Foodie F.

Yelp
if I could give zero stars I would. The staff is rude. I witness a worker yell at customers for no reason then preceeded to talk about them loudly for the whole store to hear. The workers even pointed at the young girl. I felt so bad. I'll admit I was worried they were going to talk about me. Not only are they rude but Apple Castles apples are bruised and damaged, not to mentioned overpriced. Save your money, gas, time, and go elsewhere.

Yelp
This is a beautiful family owned orchard which produces delicious apples, honey and various fruits and vegetables also locally grown. We often plan our trips to include a visit here. Besides purchasing home grown corn, tomatoes & berries, Apple Castle provides wagon tours of the orchard, story times, school tours and lots of other events throughout the year.

Sharon S.

Yelp
People are always friendly and any time you are unsure about an item you can call and they will let you know if or when the products will be available

Yelp
What a wonderful find on our unexpected tour of the area. We stopped in because we heard they had corn and we are really glad we did. They were out of sweet corn so we chose white corn instead. There were plenty of amazing produce options as well. Giant onions (that are apparently very sweet), blueberries, peaches and, of course, apples. They also had a nice selection of other seasonal local produce like peppers, string beans and zucchini. My favorite thing in the shop was the slushee machine. It had a choice of Apple cider and lemonade. My husband got a lemonade and I chose the apple cider. They were exceptional. The lemonade was a perfect combo of tart and sweet and www super refreshing. The Apple cider brought me back to childhood memories of going to the cider mill back home with my grandparents. The doughnuts looked amazing but we didn't get any as we had purchased some Amish doughnuts earlier in thr day. It was a busy afternoon but they really kept the lines moving. We'll probably check them out in the fall for Apple picking.

Yelp
I've been here on several occasions now and all for the same reason. APPLE CASTLE DONUTS! They make them fresh daily in the front and usually have one or two seasonal flavors. For not being a huge donut fan I could eat these any day. The rest of the store is a little shop with most of their products revolving around Apples. My wife has purchased several bushels of apples here before. I would say these are definitely better than any supermarket variety.

Yelp
Every year at the end of summer I am in the mood for all things fall and Apple Castle is part of the kick off. Stopped by today and saw the summer fruits still plentiful and priced right which is why juicy peaches went into the basket. There is a large variety of snacks for such a modest size building. I grabbed local honey and even visited the on-sight bees. There were early fall variety apples that taste like good apples should, fresh corn, and garden veggies. I picked up a couple glazed honey wheat donuts and fresh ground honey roasted peanut butter. Great place for healthy eating ingredients.

Yelp
If I had to pick a place to go just for donuts, this is the place! We live a little under an hour from Apple Castle and have made trips on the weekends just to satisfy my donut craving (which is few and far between)! I was introduced to this small, family owned business while attending Westminster. I have been here for their fall festival when they bring in a variety of vendors for guests to browse. The shop itself contains a unique selection of bulk food items, local small business food products (canned items, honey, cheeses, etc), and fresh produce. On several occasions, I have purchased a variety of apples that have all been delicious. My friend introduced me to their freshly ground almond butter and it is unlike any store-bought version! I have come home with freshly ground peanut butter that cannot be beat. Finally, the donuts are TO DIE FOR! I love the basic cinnamon and sugar covered donut but you cannot go wrong with maple glazed or any of their specialty flavors. They are always fresh, with a fluffy interior and crispy exterior. If you go early enough, you can see them dropping right out of the fryer and being coated with sugars or glazes and landing right on the display shelves. If you are not local but have been here before, you may find yourself like me - making an out of the way trip just to spend 10 minutes in this small market to partake in all they have to offer - or just for the donuts!

Yelp
If you love apples, this store could be your Heaven on Earth. The frozen slushy (according to my fiancé) was the BEST he's ever had plus it has no added sugar. Very unique donuts, try the cherry glazed donut you won't be disappointed. Was worth the hour drive from Pittsburgh and we will be back.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
The doughnuts were stale and no comparison to Dunkin Donuts homestyle donuts, unless you like stale wheat bread with honey on it! The peanut butter and apples get a five rating, but unfortunately I bought a dozen donuts on a Monday, and I think they were made on Saturday.

Yelp
This modest sized shop offers much more than apples although there is always a plentiful selection of apples any time of year and especially in the fall. The establishment is surrounded by their own apple trees and various other fruits. All of the apples seem to be especially delicious and reasonably priced for the most part. I'm always impressed with how many types of apples they are able to offer. In addition to produce there is a wide array of canned goods, honey, snacks, gifts, cheeses and of course their famed cake donuts. The second week of October boasts the annual apple festival where you'll find huge crates of apples outside where you can fill your own peck with an assortment of apples. There is also entertainment and various other vendors about. Their unique in-store live honey bee display is always a delight to see, especially for younger visitors. This is a great stop out among the Amish tourist countryside but also a great practical resource for locals.

Yelp
I can't speak for the actual place of business as I've never been there, but I have had their donuts and was pleased with how they tasted. I can't find a Krispy Kreme in the Shenango Valley, so this seems to be the next best thing.

Yelp
The space is small but they make good use of it. They have local goods and produce surrounding their delicious apples. Go first thing in the morning for fresh donuts. I recommend the honey wheat glazed. They have sprinkles and powdered sugar but nothing else compares. I also recommend stopping by the cooler in the back for some amazing apple cider. This is a great place to stop. Highly Recommend.

Susan S.

Yelp
Fun place with melons and peaches and transparent apples local ripe today along with everything from broccoli to eggplant, baked goods, honey, gadgets, bee hive display and don't miss...CIDER SLUSHY!

Yelp
Great little farm stand with fresh apples, homemade goods and other groceries! I'm visiting from San Francisco and this is my favorite spot in the area so far. We bought a huge jar of applesauce, freshly ground peanut butter and popcorn on the cob. Great for kids too, there's a live beehive inside and a kid's park out front.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place! More than just fruits and vegetables. My grandson loves to watch the bees at work making honey. Best donuts around and great cider. Look forward to their Fall Festival every year. The Johnstons (the owners) are some of the nicest people you will ever meet.
google avatar

Zach G.

Yelp
A great little orchard shop. The honey wheat glazed donuts are made in house and are definitely worth trying out. The apple cider is better than average. If you have kids, or if you just like this kind of thing, there is a glass-enclosed beehive on one of the walls. I'd like to try them out in-season, but for a January stop we were happy with the selection.

Frank R.

Yelp
This place is great. Nice people always friendly and helpful. Love to support a local family owned business. I have been going here for years the cider is some of the best around and the produce is fantastic. Also don't pass up the doughnuts.

Mary K.

Yelp
This place has been around quite a while. The family that runs the orchards has been doing so since the 1800's so you can trust they know the apple business. Honey Crisp apples disappear fast in the fall so get them early. Overall, very nice little shop, a chance to BUY LOCAL apples. They also have a nice selection of local jams and jellies. Definitely a treat. Closed on Sundays.
