Where to Eat Around Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (SLO)

"Part quaint mini-hotel, part rustic roadside stand, Apple Farm is the quintessential daytime place to take family that’s in from out of town. This spot is all throwback charm, with brunch options galore and a full slate of alluring benedicts to choose from." - Farley Elliott

The visit did not start so well with me. They put me in what was the equivalent of a cheap motel room. It was tiny. The toilet didn’t flush, and I had to call for maintenance which took a while. The air conditioning unit was a window unit built into the wall. I could not open windows, so the only means of ventilation was the air conditioning unit, which blew consistently upon an arthritic knee. After one night, I started looking for hotels and was ready to push the button to make a reservation somewhere else. I called the front desk and told them this isn’t working for me and that I would be checking out. They asked me to come up to the office first. They said they would give me a room in the main building at the same rate. It was much, much nicer and roomier, so I agreed. The rest of the stay was fine.

This was a wonderful place to stay. I would highly recommend staying at this beautiful, quiet place. The location was wonderful and felt very safe. The restaurant was amazing and had wonderful tasting food with great service. The rooms were very spacious and very clean. They give out cookies every day after 2 pm, which was a nice little bonus for the kids. The pool was relaxing and felt nice after a long day. I will definitely be back, I feel, as this is one of those hidden gems, and im so glad I have found it

Before heading up coast (family vacation), we had to stop for the night. Our kids were getting restless. So, my wife happened to google Apple Farm Inn. As I drove in...very secluded and quiet. As I walked up to lobby, Ms. Blake was very respectful and friendly. She accommodated us and our family service dog. I was very impressed with our room. Very pleasant stay. This Inn is way better than any expensive name branded hotel. This place do not use cheap shampoo, conditioner, and body washes. You can immediately notice after rinsing off. I wish I can give this place 9.7 stars out of 10. My family and I thank you for this rare gem.

The $124 price is good. The lady at reception is very nice. She made my check in quick. It was 11pm I was cold and hungry.she handed me 2 large fresh chocolate cookies. The reason I only gave 2 stars is the room smells. Shower smells bad. Bathroom is too small. I saw a baby lizard on bathroom floor. Overall the building needs renovation.

This is the second time I’ve given this place a shot, and it’s failed both times. To begin, when you’re offering ‘amenities’ to your guests, you do not charge a fee for it. That’s not what an amenity is. They are big on giving out cookies upon check in. First time we stayed, they ran out. Second time we stayed they had them, so that’s a 50/50. I’ve stayed in the main building and the outdoor. The outdoor building smells like your basic Motel 6 and the carpets were so gross. We put towels down to walk on so our feet wouldn’t be black. It says a heated pool. Not the case. We were told it was 80 degrees. It was freezing. Would not recommend staying there. It’s not worth the money. The air conditioner is super loud and you either have to have it on or off. No in between.

We were excited to stay here from the reviews, TripAdvisor hasn’t lead me wrong yet. This was overall pretty awful. I’ll keep it to the high (low?) points.||Long story short, we got into our room after a long drive, knowing we could check in late. It was pretty busy with a packed lobby for being so late. No worried.||We get to our room to walk in to find a woman in bed watching TV. Horrible for her, we were mortified. After a good long while of shuffling and phone calls, the seemingly one staff member handling everything got us another room. She was lovely and I heard her say she didn’t understand how the system let them double book the room. She seemed to be all alone, on a super busy night, but she was clearly trying her best.||It all really topped off at the restaurant the next morning, which with a child we were happy to be able to eat on property and enjoy the atmosphere and save time for sightseeing. No such luck! ||We decided to leave after 25 minutes while the staff sat at the front counter and people were served seemingly at random. Other families seemed to be getting frustrated, so I asked the front checkin if we could be helped and the waitress was sitting at the front desk facing the entrance with, I kid you not, the front of her hoodie pulled up over her face.|| As we walked out we saw her finally come over and take an order of a nearby family. The comments we got from the host as we walked out were the real cherry on top. There seemed to be no one older than 19 the entire time we were at the Apple Farm, it’s like they’ve left the whole operation to college students who are doing their best, or in the case of the restaurant, just don’t care at all.||I understand the restaurant recently went under new management, that was clearly a mistake. Skip Apple Farm entirely, stay somewhere else and get breakfast at Del Monte Cafe. But of a wait, but all around great.||This place could be amazing, sounds like it used to be. But it’s not worth the price, the time and the absolutely horrible restaurant experience.

One of the best hotels we have ever stayed in in the world. The customer service was excellent. Every detail appeared to have been considered to make this a luxurious and memorable stay. From the heated pool to the hot tub to the welcome cookies. The grounds are beautifully cared for as well and are visited by many birds and butterflies. The flowers and fruit trees are gorgeous. We will be back!

I really enjoy staying here, it's very peaceful. I have to say other places are not always nice when you check in. This place always has nice people at the front desk that make you feel welcomed. I used to stay at the Madonna but they don't seem as happy and friendly anymore. The Madonna also charges a bunch of " resort fees'. If you want a quiet and relaxing place, the Apple Farm is best by far with good prices and kind front desk staff. 🥰

Yelp
We have stayed here for many years, on our way home from points south. We are campers, not hotel people, so when we find a good hotel I like to leave reviews! I was told yesterday they have a new owner. That could account for the only tiny disappointment in our stay: all the rooms have been redone, redecorated, and refurbished. I miss the adorable little "dollhouse" decor! The rooms used to feature ruffly curtains and canopy beds (done in coordinating floral chintz), along with lovely floral-scented toiletries - much like a Mary Engelbreit design. It is now more "uptown" and tailored-feeling, but very nice. Our room was spotlessly clean, arranged nicely and featured a gas fireplace and fridge. Space is a bit tight in the Trellis Court rooms but we have also stayed in the main hotel and those rooms are BIG. But we weren't cramped at all and it felt cozy. Bed was King-sized and firm, and we both slept fine. As others have said, the fresh-baked cookies are fabulous, but get there early if you want any as they do run out quickly. I am sad that the restaurant is only open from 7-11am: we had been counting on having dinner there at least once. They were famous for the best turkey pot pie I think I've ever had. I was told that their lunch and dinner times fell victim to the Covid epidemic, and I am sure a lot of jobs did too. Anyone thinking of staying here can book with confidence as we have never had one single issue with either the room or the staff. This place was built many years ago but has been renovated so many times it is nearly completely new. Also, just north of the Trellis Court section is the location of the very first motel in the entire world - the Milestone Mo-Tel, which opened in 1925! About the only thing left of it is part of what looks like a bell tower but there have been plans to restore this site although nothing has been done yet. Makes for an interesting stay!

Yelp
IMPORTANT NOTE: this review is for the Inn and Restaurant ONLY AT CHRISTMASTIME. I've never been there any other time. I stayed at the Apple Farm Inn twice: once in Dec 2019, and then again just this past weekend (Dec 2024). The difference was in some ways quite stark. First I want to say the nice things: many of the front desk staff were friendly, helpful, and warm. The inn welcomed us with delicious cookies and warm cider. Breakfast at the restaurant was good. And our room was charming and comfortable. But. My entire family came here for the holidays because my visit in 2019 -- a surprise gift from my wife -- knocked our socks off. The inn was covered in decorations, trees, and lights. Every single room door had an ornament hanging from it. The hallways were packed full of stuffed Santas and snowmen and mini trees and lights. The country store was filled with mulitple decorated trees, christmas gifts, and decorations, with Christmas specials playing on a large TV over a bin where you could write letters to Santa. There were carolers in the lobby. The entire property was absolutely magical, like walking into a Chistmas movie. It was this version of the Inn I convinced my family to all spend their money at, and drive four hours to stay at and experience together. The inn is no longer the same. The owners will say something about COVID and I will excuse them for closing the restaurant but for the slim window from 7-11am (instead of being open all day) and for using fewer lights, which requires electricity. Maybe they're hurting financially that badly. But the entire inn was sadly underdecorated: just a tree and some lights in the lobby. Gone were the hallways full of decorations. Gone were the ornaments on the doors. Gone were decorations in the country store. Gone were the decorations in the resturarant. There is no reason I can think of for this; decorating is simply manpower, and the inn being lavishly decorated is literally the schtick, it's the reason anyone would come for the holidays. They already HAVE all the decorations; they're in storage somewhere unless they're so broke they had to sell them all off for $200 or whatever old decorations are worth. Honestly, I could have stayed almost anywhere that stuck a tree in their lobby and it would have felt the same; there was no reason to drive all the way to SLO for it. The Christmas spirit at the inn was diminished by easily 50-60%. I was terribly disappointed and a bit embarrassed I'd dragged everyone there for a few sparse decorations and a closed restaurant and a shop with nothing in it. I said earlier that "many" of the front desk staff were friendly; there was an older woman who may or may not have been a manager/owner who was much less charming. I came down to ask her for our daily cookies and she said she had none, though there was a giant stack of them beside her. When I eyed them obviously, she said nothing and smacked some cookies into my palm like I was cheating her. It's not like I came around trying to get dozens of cookies throughout the day, just once when we arrived and once the following night. The wine they used to offer in glasses in the lobby was now offered in plastic cups (in a much smaller portion) in the otherwise empty shop across the way. I had also written the Inn excitedly a few weeks before arriving asking for some suggestions as to what we might do in town and where we might eat (since we could not eat at their now-defunct restaurant for lunch or dinner). It took them two weeks and three emails from me to write back that they had no idea what was going on in the city or where we might eat. Some concierge service. Ultimately, we had a nice time because we were together, and we brought our own appliances to watch movies and play games, and we went into town and found our own restaurants and stores to explore. But the Inn -- which had been the glowing highlight of my visit in 2019! -- was just a place we stayed the night, having lost most of it's holiday charm. I won't ever come back for the holidays, because... why? There are probably other places now willing to do what the Apple Farm once did so well, and much closer by.

Yelp
Spoke to Emily and Sara today, December 13, 2024, both had unbelievable attitudes, rude, not professional , and refused to answer a question that I asked. Emily hung up my call in the middle of my question, and Sara talked down to me. What has happened to good customer service, both clerks should be retrained as how to deal and speak to a prospective customer. At this point in time, I will make reservations at another hotel in San Luis Obispo, ca. Margaret HaynesSwitzer

Yelp
Quaint little inn located close by Cal Poly SLO. Upon entering, it really feels like I've been transported to a cottage. There are paintings located all around the lobby. They have fresh chocolate chip cookies and apple cider every day which was nice. In addition to our stay, we also get complimentary wine (you can choose from two types). Room is very cozy and comfortable, but the price is a little steep for the size we got. Parking lot was also confusing with the signs as they also have a restaurant so it can get full. There is a small outdoor garden that you can walk around. Overall not bad but there are other hotels on this street where you can receive the same quality and a lot cheaper.

Yelp
Whenever I visit San Luis Obispo, I always make sure to stop at Apple Farm for breakfast. This time, however, was my first time staying at the hotel. I love this place! Upon arrival, during check-in, they mistakenly assigned someone else to our room, which was quite surprising. However, we stayed calm, and the management team resolved the issue quickly, which was great. That was the only issue I had, but Apple Farm rebounded from that hiccup beautifully. After check-in, they treated us to freshly made, delicious cookies, and let me tell you--you'll want to return to the lobby the next day for more! FYI, they bake fresh cookies every day at 3 p.m. Be sure to try the restaurant, as the breakfast food is delicious. I had the biscuits and gravy, bacon, scrambled eggs, and crispy hash browns. Overall, I was very happy with my stay. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom was a good size, and there was a nice flat-screen TV on the wall. There's also a gas station right across the street, which is convenient if you're on a road trip or just staying for one night, and the freeway is nearby as well. The staff at Apple Farm Inn were wonderful, and I will definitely be back!

Yelp
My fiancé and I stayed at the Apple Farm Inn when we were in SLO for the 4th of July weekend. Upon check-in, we were greeted with such friendliness. They offer fresh baked cookies in the lobby as well as hot apple cider and coffee. They also have free wine tasting from 3p-8p which came with snacks. We stayed in a Trellis Court room which is an extension of the hotel. It was perfect for what we needed and the price was just right. Each room also has a fridge which helped keep our waters cool. We enjoyed our stay so much we decided to add an additional night. It's very walkable to downtown SLO too, which is a plus! I would recommend this for budget-minded travelers for a cozy experience. I would definitely stay here again!

Yelp
A bit old and rustic but clean and well maintained. THE GOOD + Clean rooms + The photos on their website more or less faithfully represent what you actually get. THE UGLY -The prices at their restaurant and bakery are extremely jacked up. For example, 3 eggs any style $14! See my photo for the menu -One of the front desk employees (hard haired young lady) was a bit unfriendly Location @ This hotel is at the north edge of Monterey Street and is about 20 minutes walk away from the main commercial area of the downtown @ The Cal Poly welcome center is within a walkable distance (20 minutes) This is one of many motels on the north edge of the town. I will probably stay here again since many other motels nearby seemed shabby and dirty. RE: The response from the business. Since they claim they did a market research and that their prices are comparable or even cheaper than their competitors, I did a quick Google search. The first hit, one of their competitors, Del Monte Cafe, their 2 + 2 + 2 (2 eggs , 2 slices of bacon or sausage and 2 buttermilk pancakes) is $14.25, which I can deal with. $14 for just 3 eggs or $19 for 3 eggs and a sausage at Apple Farm, is not reasonable (IMHO).

Yelp
Staff - super friendly and accommodating! They have fresh baked cookies for the guests and it's thick and delicious! Complimentary wine tasting is a super plus! The room is so comfy and large. Bed is super comfy, the hotel decor is so cool perfect for Halloween vibes. It's super cozy and the tv rotation off the wall was a plus since the bed poles got in the way. Will be back!

Yelp
This place is sooooo nice. It has so much charm and the rooms are beautiful. When I checked in, Brady was so sweet and helpful. She gave me some fresh baked cookies, hot apple cider and an apple ornament to take home with me. My room is in the Mill House (room B) and has a private hot tub on my balcony. It's nestled into the trees in the back so I have complete privacy while soaking in the hot tub. The king bed was so comfortable and I slept great. There's a fireplace and bathtub in the room as well. It has been my all time favorite hotel and that says a lot since I'm very well travelled and have stayed at thousands of hotels. A few other notes - it's about a 8 minute drive from the Amtrak train station (San Luis Obispo). There's plenty of parking and walking distance to area restaurants. I have 2 complaints which is why I only gave 4 stars. The WiFi doesn't work and I wasn't able to connect the entire weekend. I didn't really mind though because it helped me to disconnect. My bigger complaint is that I was never able to connect with the front desk via phone. I tried at least 5-6 times prior to my arrival (at all different times of the day/night) and then again after I checked in. The voicemail says they're not available and to send an email. So I sent an email and heard back about 5 hours later and my request was completed. But my point is that sometimes I want and need to connect with a person over the phone (like why isn't the WiFi working). I shouldn't have to walk down to the front desk to ask a question. Please fix this and you'll get 5 stars from me :) Update: I changed my rating to a 5 star because of how awesome Adam, Brady, and Sonya were at the front desk. Adam and Brady were kind enough to let me check out at 12N instead of 11am. Sonya was so patient with me while I was asking her some questions about my final bill. I was also pleased to see hen I called the front desk, Sonya answered. I absolutely loved my stay here and will be back! Make sure to ask for Mill House room A or B if you want the suite with the hot tub on the balcony.

Yelp
Where to begin? My husband and I stayed here over the Thanksgiving holiday and everything was fantastic. Fresh cookies, hot coffee, tea, and cider. Everyone on the staff was incredibly hospitable and welcoming. Special shoutout to Patty at the front desk for her genuine kindness and care for both the hotel patrons and her staff. I loved our Trellis Court room. I was initially a little skeptical as it's described as "motel-style" lodging and I worried that the room might fall short of my expectations, but that fear was quickly assuaged pretty much as soon as we opened the door to the room. I've stayed at plenty of motels and this was, by far, the nicest one I've ever stayed at. The fireplace worked perfectly. The room, while small, was set up to be most accommodating and maximizing of space. The couch area was a great touch as well because it provided a comfortable place to eat and drink. The bed was plush -- and comfortably accommodated all the stuffed animals we'd brought! I also appreciated that extra pillows and blankets were already thoughtfully provided in the closet area without me needing to request them. The decor was lovely and I really liked the floral pictures as well as the larger bed pillows bearing a floral and bird pattern. The heater kept us warm and cozy every night too! I also liked that they were able to hold our bags for a little while after we checked out so we could continue exploring around town unencumbered before catching our train home. If you visit, definitely make a trip to the on-site restaurant and attached gift shop. I recommend the biscuits and gravy or the biscuit chicken sando. Will definitely be back again. The entire stay was amazing from start to finish.

Yelp
1st time visitor. We chose this place to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Located at the end of the street to the freeway. Plenty of parking. Checking-in has to be at 3 pm or later. We arrived at 2 and to return at a later time. We booked online on their website. Afterward, summer sale. I called to get the new rates, and after 5 phone calls and no answer, I emailed them. To be told, I need to cancel my reservation. I didn't for the fear of losing my room, so I will handle the situation when we check-in. Check-in process was ok. Employee said she needs to talk to her supervisor, left and returned back, saying they will NOT honor sale rates because it is in fine print when you make the reservations. All my years of traveling, establishments have always honor the sale rates but this was the 1st. We stayed in Millhouse room A. Place could use an update. Room was ok. No kitchenette. Room does have compact fridge and no microwave. Call front desk and they will deliver. Mattress needs to be replaced. Hard and uncomfortable. Surrounding area is quiet & peaceful. We will not return.

Yelp
This hotel was so freaking cute! My friends and I loved it!! The rooms were so spacious and they came with either a couch or a few chairs. The hotel is really clean and I like how large the grounds are. The freshly baked cookies were my favorite part!! And as well as the complimentary glass of wine once a day! Everyone was so kind. I really enjoyed my time here, I would stay again if I had the chance :)

Yelp
I stayed at Apple Farm Inn just last night. I found it very cozy. From the nice young woman who checked us in, to the room itself, the complimentary glass of wine, hot apple cider and hot coffee in the lobby, all was top quality. Not 5 stars as in upscale amenities, rather 5 stars for delivering comfort and care. The room itself was as nice as any hotel room at even elite hotels. With that said, we stayed in a room upstairs in the same building as the lobby. This place appears to have many different buildings, so I can't speak to the guest experience in the other buildings. We did not try their local-award-winning breakfast. Unfortunately, their restaurant only serves breakfast. A note about the bad reviews on Yelp for this place: the bad reviews seem focused on the fact that this establishment doesn't offer the same experience that it did a couple/few decades ago. While I can see how that is a letdown for people coming here after many, many years... I don't feel that Apple Farm Inn deserves to be judged against a version of itself from a different era.

Yelp
I'm a huge, huge fan of the Apple Farm for nostalgic reasons where my paternal grandparents were huge fans and often came through here - even to eat if they weren't staying overnight. Think: MARTHA STEWART vibes! After all these decades, I booked my first visit through Expedia and stayed in the smaller, Trellis Court. What was confusing to me was that the website had zero availability for the summer of 2023, yet the third party booking sites did. No matter - I got the room! Parking is free and easy. Checking in on a Saturday afternoon, lobby staff was stressed/not friendly and gave us our room key and cookies quickly. Trellis Court rooms are quite small! But we were there less than 24 hours. Nevertheless, there was an odd gas smell from the fireplace, and although my boyfriend initially tried to immediately tell the lobby hostess, she was dealing with another problem with another family and we stuck it out until we notified the lobby at checkout the next day. Still, I felt my grandma's vibe here. So comforting! I would definitely come back and get a bigger room in the main house. The restaurant is delicious, but sad it's not open for dinner! I'll always come back for the nostalgia.

Yelp
We had a lovely stay at the Apple Farm Inn on the Trellis Court side. We were able to check in early on one of their busy days - called in first to double check and they said if if the room wasn't ready we could go to the pool or do a complimentary wine tasting to kill time. Our free cookies felt (and tasted) like they were fresh out of the oven when we arrived. I feel this was very good deal for the price we paid! The pool was busy but they did a good job keeping the area stocked with towels and area tidy. Room was clean and our stay was very quiet despite them being all booked up. Would definitely recommend and looking forward to future stays.

Yelp
awful experience they called the cops on me because my dog peed on a planter outside... i was so confused and scared some kind woman saw what was happening and gave me some chocolate and a hug that was staying at the hotel she said she was so sorry the staff was harassing me. she was a guest not an employee. I was charged 250 dollar cleaning fee but they also didn't give me enough time to actually pack up i was in the pool and my dog was in the pool area with me so i had to rush and shower couldn't get groomed i left clothing and credit cards behind because i was so afraid of being shot by police like so many other innocent people the room was not left messy enough to be charged 250 extra dollars there's just absolutely no way. all we did was use towels and the bed the lady on the phone said we moved furniture and left food behind but again we only had a box of pizza that we took with us when we left the hotel I've had fabulous experiences here before but i guess the guy just didn't want to see a happy African American woman so he did everything he could to try to ruin my Saturday i left the hotel crying i had to do my makeup and hair in the car im absolutely emotionally drained and my body hurts from the experience this was one of the worst experiences of my life... I didn't even mention anything abt race and the hotel staff said don't call me racist.. I again mentioned nothing abt race but after she said something abt racism i now assume that this was DEFINITELY because i was the only creole woman on site i do feel inclined to get a lawyer to help me with this... i got breakfast from the restaurant laughed with the evening shift staff members they saw my dog and I and said nothing in fact they pet my puppy and welcomed her in with open and loving arms the morning staff honestly made me want to hide someplace for a week.. this was the room when we left... I said I was leaving before anyone asked me to leave? this all happened before 12:30? my dog doesn't even pee near the front door because she's so hygienic now you're lying

Yelp
I was a guest at the Apple Farm and I was parked in their parking lot. I came back from being out and the front desk came out and told us one of their luggage carts rolled into our car and dented it. Most hotels I've been to keep the carts in the lobby! They do not have any signs posted in the parking lot that say "Not responsible for damage"! So they should be responsible for the damage while I was staying there as a guest!! Well they are not taking any responsibility and they want my insurance to pay for it and make me pay my deductible! Why would anyone want to stay at a hotel that treats their guests like this!! I am so disappointed!! DJ

Yelp
We are staying at the inn so decided to give this place a try. Entrance was around building facing the street. The entrance via the parking lot and inn was locked which seemed confusing and inconvenient. The inside could be super enticing because there are 2 pastry cases. One was full of beautiful cookies, the other just about empty, only 3 sad pies. The atmosphere is okay, not all farm-y or apple-y like I was expecting but it's clean. The hostess said something to use from the far end of the counter, we thought perhaps I'll be with you (we were only ones there). But we waited and waited. My hubby went to look and she must have said follow me Got seated, got coffee, water and menus...waitress was not very friendly, hubby said maybe she's had a bad morning? Placed our order, wow - big servings...shareable size but the charge a $3 plate split have to say food was delish - the cook saved them hubby had his go to, biscuits and gravy. He loved it. Yelp - said I got a free cookie for checking in but our waitress wasn't familiar with the offer so needed to get her manager...I almost felt like I was doing something wrong. The manager came and he had the personality of sunshine! So friendly. I was relieved! He read the yelp offer and brought us not one, but 3 magnificent cookies. Yummy! Over all the staff should mimic the personality of their manager but the food was delicious, a bit pricey but worth trying it out at least once.

Yelp
I'm gonna go ahead and give it four stars with hesitation! Definitely they priced it correctly. It's a lot of value for the price ....when I mean by hesitation is.- A wonky remote control for the TV Internet that didn't work When I called downstairs on the phone, nobody answered Worst of all: hair in the bathtub/shower that was not mine! It's summertime and I get it and they are busy. The property is decorated country cute and the location is perfect. They just need to focus on a few things.

Yelp
Room was family suite 24, Trellis Court... It is a two bedroom one bath. The bedroom with the two double beds had a heater that did not work. There are a refrigerator and a microwave, but no utensils whatsoever. Three of the ceiling ceiling lights in the double bedroom did not work. None of the TVs in the room nor the rest of the facility are properly matched with the remote controls provided, so the two tv's were useless. There are no instructions for use and no one could assist with said use. All in all, a very disappointing experience. The suite was clean. The beds were nicely made, and nicely presented. But it was a very chilly night in the bedroom with the two double beds... also, the beds sit a little higher than normal, so some older souls may have difficulty "climbing" into bed...no step stools.

Yelp
I could have sworn that I had reviewed my beloved Apple Farm in the past. Prior to the pandemic, I had stayed here many dozens of times. I even have the red wooden apples to prove it! And the rating would always be 4.5 to 5 stars! Those stays were largely in another lifetime, but after a time, I was able to introduce Dear Hubby, and we inducted Adored Grandson to staying at Apple Farm. Sadly, the saying, "You can never go home again," is the feeling I'm experiencing on this new visit. Realizing that they must have taken a HUGE financial hit during the height of COVID-19 times, the evidence of cutbacks is too evident to long-timers like us. The once luxurious, vibrant gardens now have spent / dead flowers and foliage, crying out for TLC from knowledgeable gardeners to tend to them properly. Much color is missing in key spots. Gorgeous containers that used to highlight seasonal plantings are missing. The overall vibe is poorer for it. In the lobby, evidence of redecorating is present, with the once-signature floral wallpaper replaced with a more modern style. I don't begrudge that, but I do miss the central table bedecked with fresh floral arrangements and seasonal decor enhancements. The substitution of faux roses nestled in several bowls in the lobby just don't do it for me. At all. I can understand foregoing the big real arrangements, but a few small vases with real roses surely wouldn't break the present budget, yet elevate the look and feel of a gathering space. I noted, looking down at the pool area from the lobby above, that there were various used towels lying around. That seemed out of character from the past, when order was kept up, if not by the guests returning towels to a container, then to a staff member tidying up public spaces. These may be picky observations, but I share them so that perhaps management can see what a long-time guest observes after a while away. In the past, they were always anxious for feedback and looking to make improvements. One more quick observation, and this one really, really saddens me. The hallways in the main inn used to be glorious extensions of the overall Apple Farm's gracious character. They had many pieces of antique reproduction furniture adorned with displayed art, floral creations, and cute gift items. All would be discretely for sale. They added color, texture, and richness to the spaces. All gone now; only a few wooden benches remain. It's very generic now, and I don't care for that at all. I used to so look forward to visiting the Apple Farm Inn for decor inspiration. Some of that has faded into memory now with the changes they've chosen to make. On the plus side, we received a warm welcome upon check-in, plus freshly baked cookies. The warm apple cider, plus coffee, are still available in the lobby. Our room in the Trellis Court is cute and cozy warmed by an in-room fireplace for charm and heat. We will surely return, and will hope for some revisiting by management of attention to the smaller details that add up to a more perfect experience. As DH said, "At present, the magic is missing."

Yelp
Love, love this place so much! I try coming up here from LA at least twice a year and I love the rooms decore, the restaurant is great, and the grounds are just stunning. Plus, they give you fresh baked cookies upon arrival. Yum yum!

Yelp
Single mom stopping in for the night on my way my way to Los Angeles. My room, 215, overlooked a breezy creek cloaked with eucalyptus, trees, and maples. The room was stunning! A four poster bed, a small couch, and a wing back chair outlined bay windows with hurricane shutters. I were able these to open to enjoy brook's sounds. There is a fireplace as well as the heater and air. The pool is heated! As well as the hot tub! I did not eat in the restaurant, but plan on returning to the hotel, and requesting room 215!

Yelp
Very quaint and unique Motel. The rooms are decorated nicely and the fireplace is something you don't see anymore. The price was a real bargain too!! I usually only give negative reviews, because of something bad that happens. Well, this morning I woke up early to go get a cup of freshly brewed coffee in the ck in office. Probably the best cup of coffee I've ever had. I'm used to the crap you make in your room.....or nothing at all. This was a welcomed surprise. I can't wait to walk over and get my second cup! The chocolate chip cookies at ck in are rerealy good too!

Yelp
Quaint and charming hotel near the freeway. Rooms are huge and uniquely furnished. The restaurant is excellent and reasonably priced. I would give this hotel 5 stars had it not been for the unfriendly morning desk clerk with dark hair whose name I think is Joey. His arrogant attitude does not reflect the warmth of this hotel.

Yelp
If I were to post before and after pictures you could visibly see the difference. They removed all the charm and ambiance of this once beautiful charming Country ! It's bland even! The rooms are just hotel rooms now. These pictures are before! Everything I loved about this place gone! When I mentioned it she said well nothing stays the same The restaurant is breakfast only! The gift shop once brimming with beautiful things is gone replaced with a pathetic shop. I will never return!!

Yelp
I stayed at the Apple Farm Inn for one night and stayed in room 312. The shower was not functional. When we checked out the next day, it turns out we were not the only room with water related issues. One guest couldn't turn off their faucet because it was broken. Another guest couldn't get any hot water at all. Additionally, on their website, free wine vouchers are advertised as a perk with your stay. However, we were unable to pick these up because the cellar closed early for the day for whatever reason. The inn seems charming and cozy but the place feels like it needs to be renovated in a very big way. I probably won't be staying here again in the near future.

Yelp
As a former employee I would highly recommend staying elsewhere there are so many better options in Slo and Shell Beach! if i could give no stars or a negative star i would. One Apple Farm doesn't practice fair labor laws according to state California Law, Equal Employee Opportunity, or BBB. the GM Sofya is horrible to deal with and is Russian enough said there. None of the "fresh baked goods" are homemade it's frozen especially the cookies they give you at checkin. the cider is also made from a package you can go and buy yourself. The rooms DO NOT come with microwaves and they have a very limited amount to ask for. They also don't offer housekeeping unless you ask but don't tell you that. Not all the rooms are equal as far as aesthetic but will charge you the same. ALWAYS BOOK THROUGH A THIRD PARTY SIGNIFICANTLY CHEAPER IF YOU ARE SO INCLINED TO STAY. Also last minute stays check Hotel.tonight for a cheap deal. If it rains some of the rooms leak and have ants!! the TV's are very outdated and low end and often confusing or just don't work, same with internet. Yvonne in the wine cellar is not to be trusted! she will most definitely be one way to your face and talk horrible behind your back I have personally witnessed this she also is highly inappropriate, she doesn't have a clear knowledge of wine whatsoever but pretends to do. All other drinks are wine based because they don't have a liquor license. Ultimately if you want to support a business that runs shady and doesn't treat an employee right are straight up liars then by all means throw your money away for a less then charming has been. In past times under different ownership it may have been good once but those days are long gone. the restaurant isn't even open anymore but for breakfast but you have to check out at 11am a hard thing to accomplish; and the food quality is poor. There is no longer a gift shop or ice cream parlor. The service, property, and internal affairs is seriously lacking and lack luster your better off spending your time and hard earned money elsewhere. They also charge a resort fee per day! THIS is by no means is a resort people! Do not fall for it and on top of that a charge deposit per day! Shell Beach Avila and many many other places in Downtown Slo are well worth your money. beware of hidden costs and horrible attitudes from management such as Patty and Sofya they also will not give you property contact information or HR department information when asked. shady shady shady!!! All this comes first hand I worked overtimes on all recently holidays without lunch breaks or any 10min breaks! not the type of company I would personally support. I also have multiple email exchanges addressing all my concerns very speciffically some extremely seriosus, including hostile work environment, sexual harassment, labor laws; all have been negated and not addressed. I will gladly show further proof of who this company really is and how they opperate when you stand up for what is right. Bullying, discrimination, and personal information was used against me due to my personal outside life circumstances that had nothing to do with work including HIPPA violations. Don't trust this establishment with your information. Your better off anywhere else.

Yelp
This review is for the inn only. Just stayed one night. This place is a landmark in SLO, and I have fond memories of it. It is slightly showing some age but still has charm and is unlike cookie-cutter hotels. Plenty of free parking here. Check-in was simple, and they offer hot cider/coffee/tea and chocolate chip cookies upon check-in. It is walkable to several restaurants as it is located in a hotel row of sorts. Good 101 Freeway access. There is a restaurant on site but hours are very limited as it is only for breakfast and lunch maybe til 2 pm. Rooms are large, with a sitting nook. We had a refrigerator but no microwave. Furniture is mis-matched possibly intentionally to give it old-fashioned charm, almost a homey feel. Mattress was very comfortable. We have never tried the pool, so cannot speak to that. Our room was quiet. It featured a gas fireplace, which was nice for a cool September evening (on a timer). Bathrooms have undergone some remodel at some point, but are just ok, serviceable. No issue with it. Housekeeping was a bit lacking there as tissue box was empty. Towels are a bit skimpy. Still enjoyed our stay and slept well.

Yelp
Wonderful cozy hotel nestled in the lovely San Luis Obispo landscape. Staff are friendly and welcoming. The hot cider and cookies on checkin make you feel like you're home. Sad that the restaurant is now only breakfast, and that the gift shop was empty on last visit.

Yelp
Listen to the reviews. I should have. The pace looks cool and is nice until you need to sleep. We got room 15 that faces the highway and road traffic. They put us on the first floor and put someone above us. They have 109 rooms yet manage to put all the guests in one area. Ridiculous. I had to call twice that they help keep the noise above us down. Nothing. Still loud. Asked for a room change and was told i already transferred another guest do i cant move you, sorry. wow what great customer service. don't waste your money here. we just wanted to get a good night sleep before our train ride at 4al. tjis place ruined our trip. the owners should be ashamed.

Yelp
This was the best back in the day, things have changed here, Apple Farm Resturant closes early so forget about lunch and dinner. The most annoying thing is the gardeners while trying to enjoy poolside not gonna happen, don't brother complaining about gardeners they might retaliate and comes back with more dust and noise and if you have allergies, not good!

Yelp
This was our second time staying at this accomodation and I would recommend it to folks staying in the area. As you can see from photos, the vibe is for older folks-- which I dont mind based on my personality. We've only come here in mid-January so its always calm and quiet with good rates. We did miss the apple-cider bottles they used to put inside of the guest rooms but we did partake in the goodies they offer throughout the day in the lobby. Bed was comfortable and the room was spacious and easy to access.

Yelp
The hotel is perfectly functional, it's clean, has a comfortable bed, friendly staff, an ice maker and a pool/hot tub. I was really disappointed since the price was quite high for a hotel room. There are no actual "amenities" - no free breakfast, only coffee and creamers( not even real milk/cream) in the lobby and the "wine tasting" is a joke. The wine was terrible and it was basically 2 sips of wine in a plastic cup. We stayed on the first floor which is accessed through a really weird set of stairs in the back of the building. The carpet in the hallway is hideous and the wall paper is horrible. It's not country inn charming.

Yelp
My family and I have been coming to Apple Farm Inn for so many years, and we have loved this place, but this last visit was terrible, and it has proven how much Apple Farm has changed for the worse. So many things went wrong, so I will have to list them one by one: 1) We got to room 323, which was our room of choice, and we immediately noticed the smell of cigarette smoke. We thought it might be a fluke but then I looked up and noticed both smoke detectors had been covered with shower caps. This is an absolute safety hazard and it's regrettable that no one on staff noticed this beforehand. The patrons who did this dastardly deed should have been held financially accountable for their damage and putting people's lives at risk. 2) We had to go down and request another room. It was the evening before Thanksgiving and of course it was full of patrons checking-in. There was only one staff member at the front desk and the line of people was out the door. As the night wore on it was clear she seemed to be the only one working there that night and it's a shame that Apple Farm did not have the foresight to better staff their hotel. The customers and this staff member both suffered as a result. She was obviously beyond overwhelmed (understandably) and the amount of patrons and issues that ensued were far too great for one staff member to handle. 3) After waiting in line (we actually had to wait in line 3 times to get everything settles) we got another room, not as nice of course, but we noticed that we did not get 2 beds as we had requested on our reservation. We were told at the front desk that we only requested one bed, but we did indeed request 2 beds. Regardless, by the time we brought it up we were told there were only 1-bed rooms available so we could not get what we requested. 4) Once settled in our room I tried to connect to the WiFi and could not. Even when it did show up as an available network, it could never go so far as connect. The next morning I went to the front desk to report this issue, and the staff member told me there was nothing she could do. She was a bit rude and was completely unhelpful. She told me just to use my own cellular data. She also said that she does not use the WiFi and I shouldn't have to either. She didn't even bother to say that she'd report this to her manager. Nothing. So I went my whole visit without Apple Farm WiFi. Another proof of this lady being completely unhelpful was confirmed when I overheard a patron ask about Thanksgiving dinner at the Apple Farm restaurant. She said she had no idea and said they would have to go and ask themselves. 5) My family and I have noticed so many sad changes at Apple Farm over the years. Things one by one have been taken away. In the past, we would get the red apples from our room to take home as souvenirs; we would get little treats in our room; they used to have a reception with treats and drinks every evening (now you just get a glass of wine upon request at the front desk); we used to get a voucher at the Apple Farm restaurant; the Apple Farm restaurant used to have a cute gift shop for patrons (now that is gone completely). I could go on and on but all this to say that Apple Farm seems to be in a state of decline and is only a shadow of what it used to be. My family and I are so sad to see our longstanding beloved hotel go to the wayside.

Yelp
CHANGED FOR WORST - terrible new ownership If you stayed at Apple Farm over the years then you knew the Charm, Care, Warmth, Customer Service you received here along with cutest Apple gift upon your arrival and the beautiful decorations especially at Christmas time. It's over and so is the upkeep in the rooms. The new owners have taken to pride in continuing the traditions . Spend your money and stay elsewhere

Yelp
Horrible Stay. Loud group in lobby until after 9:30. Call to front desk unanswered and directed me to send an email if I had a problem. What's with that?

Yelp
My wife and I stay at the Apple Farm Inn once a quarter for a work event. We always get the same room which is quiet large, has a fireplace, mini fridge and was Very Clean. They give you two very yummy chocolate chip cookies at check in, has two bottles of water in the room plus a coffee station in the lobby in the morning. They also give you two tickets for wine tasting at the marketplace. Rachel who has been serving the wine for over a year is the curator and is very informative on the wines. I give her and the rest of the staff two thumbs up. The market place is stocked with local wines and spirits and local specialty offerings. As for the on-site restaurant and bakery, they are currently opened for breakfast only but have a huge variety of plates to choose from. I had the chicken fried steak and eggs, the portion was huge and the breading and gravy were spot on. I would have given 5 stars but dropped them down by one because our room took around 5 minutes to get hot water to the shower and even though they have free WiFi, the coverage didn't make it to our room.

Yelp
I stayed here about 10 years ago and it was Christmas Central with lights, Christmas trees, the cutest gift store. It's not that anymore. The restaurant only open to 11am (no lunch or dinner) and forget it if you like a Cafe Mocha. (They used to serve a lovely cup). The hotel room I stayed in, first night, heater started smoking (electrical burn out) and a blazing alarm went off. The facility workers did remove the old heater and installed a new one that worked great, this team was A+. I had brought my grandkids to see the most Christmassy place in SLO. A big disappointment. What happened? No hot chocolate in the lobby, just bare essentials of regular and decaf and tea. Sorry to complain but for the room cost I hoped for more. The dear Apple Farm my family remembers is no more. I heard a rumor that the cute gift shop is going to be a wine room. The best thing about my stay was the memories of the old Apple Farm.

Yelp
Lovely hotel! Nice little stop on our way to San Francisco. It was extremely well kept for being a lot older it was very nostalgic even the window sills were very clean and dust free :) I pay attention to these things in rooms and the staff does a very nice job at keeping the hotel clean ! We enjoyed the pool and the beds were comfortable :) will definitely stay again !

Yelp
I've been going to this place since the 90's ... all due to the fact that it was a Charming & Quaint little weekend getaway with good service and courteous staff. However, on our last visit 07/25 my wife and I had the most awful experience. While our suite was being cleaned by house keeping, an important shopping bag containing some food items, personal belongings including but not limited to my wife's medication was taken. After notifying management we were treated very rudely by the obnoxious desk manager (Adam) and a few moments later by his friend that made a nasty comment and told us to get out ! I will never set foot in this establishment and will refuse to be treated this way, especially after the way they both addressed my wife whom was super concerned with her missing medication with the outmost disrespect, to the point that I was filled with Rage" ..! I can only hope that future & perspective patrons will think twice about spending their hard earned in this Toilet. Furthermore, the day before, while spending time getting coffee from the lobby I heard 2 other guests complaining about the poor quality of water/shower and finding bugs on their linens. The new owners/management of Apple farm should be ashamed.

Yelp
Charming is a good descriptor for this place! Notice how I used place, not hotel? The rooms are very nicely maintained, and I enjoyed my stay thoroughly. My stunning and smart granddaughter graduated from a college nearby, giving me a reason to check out the city life in San Luis Obispo! But the room wasn't the highlight, neither was the slogging on of the commencement speaker. Downstairs, there's a charming connected restaurant, where patrons are encouraged to sit down for a bite before exploring the town. The sticky buns they serve were incredible. It was unbelievable how many I ate in such a short stay! My slouchy old purse probably has a commemorative stain from the sticky bun sauce. My blood sugar was all over the place after that trip, whew! Anyhow, if you're ever in town, try the sticky buns!!

Yelp
So I'm going to review the Apple Farm for breakfast as it's been quite a few years. It's still a little bit pricier than most restaurants locally but it is attached to a hotel. The average price of breakfast was $19. They still have the delicious jam and the coffee was excellent. I had, apple bacon, brie omelette, little too much Bree for me. My husband and I both had crispy hashbrowns and for an up charge of four dollars fruit. I also got a orange cranberry muffin to go. Our server was Lucy and she was so friendly and always smiling. My husband even commented to her what a nice personality she had.

Yelp
Used to be a 4*. been here 3 times over 15 years. it's not as good as it was regarding hospitality. used to get cookies every night in lobby with fireplace and lots of chairs. now, hardly any chairs in lobby, no cookies except when you arrive - used to be every night. wine tasting used to be in a room and social. now it's just 2 coupons and now it's just offered at reception. the pool and jacuzzi nice and heated. rooms seem renovated and decent. we could hear people in the room above us all night walking around. annoying. we have often come before at Thanksgiving, and there were a lot of Christmas decorations. This time there were none until the day after which kind of defeats the point when you come for Thanksgiving. just my opinion. i'd still come again in 5 years or so. it's a nice place and quaint in a lovely area. I just miss the cookies and the decorations that make it Thanksgiving for me. they did have a fairly basic restaurant as part of the hotel, which, of course was helpful and that was not bad for pricing or food . I do take my review seriously.

Yelp
Appke Inn is probably the best place we have stayed without paying a hefty price. Service us great, rooms are extremely clean and cozy. It's a blessing in disguise. We are traveling from San Diego to San Francisco and some friends that had stayed here last year told us about this place. It everything they said and more. Definitely a come back and stay more days.

Yelp
Charming cozy little inn that's been around for decades. Room price was good. Room itself cozy and clean and comfy. Nice shower, bed slept great. Perfect location for our show on campus just down the street. In room fireplace not for heat but ambiance rather. I'll stay again.

Yelp
Well where to start is the issue...we walked in to the office to a sarcastic manger, and no electricity. I understand that's not their fault but it was handled very unprofessionally. She starts off by saying there is no electricity and we can't get a refund on our reservations before we even said anything. So that being said we checked in and tried to make the best of it. The room was dated, so small and literally at the freeway off-ramp. Way out in left field, in the dark. No light, tv, nothing. The entire experience was not enjoyable. I think the electricity finally came on a few hours later. I feel like maybe 30 years ago this was a spot to check out. Now I think they need a makeover. Starting with the front desk professionalism. Let's take it up a notch. This place is not on our radar to try again. Bummer!!

Yelp
My husband and I booked our room a year ago for our 25th anniversary. We booked a room in the Mill House. We went to our room and it was small but ok. It was a bit "older" looking, but not bad. Room was clean. Yet, it might have just been me, it seemed that the bathroom floor tilted and was not level. My husband noticed too. I suffer from vertigo, so I may have felt it more. I went and told the front desk and the Manager Adam was very nice. He was able to book us into another room. The new room was gorgeous, large, octagon (cool). Shower was huge with 3 shower heads. Staff was courteous and attentive. Our anniversary trip was perfect and I thank the hotel for understanding my concern and being able to help.

Yelp
W stayed at the Apple Farm many times over a 10 period, it was always charming, delightful, and great service until we stayed there Spring 2021 everyting was terrible. The hosuekeeping was bad, and the room was dirty, the staff was rude, we've been to the Central Coast many times since that unpleasant final visit, we happily found somewhere else that's delightful, and charming just outside of Morro Bay to stay. We switched 3 years ago to a lovely inn in Baywood just outside of Morro Bay, it's charming, and excellent service. It's close to SLO, Arroyo Grande, Cambria, and about 7 minutes to Morro Bay where there lots of excellent restaurant/ delicious seafood, excellent Chinese foot massage places, and lots of wineries in that whole areas. eceryone is very polite at the new inn we switched to several years ago, we've much happier there, and additionally we never heard from the Apple Farm after that miserable final visit.
