Where To Eat Outside In Jersey City & Hoboken

"If eating wood-fired pizzas on covered back patios was a sport, Apulia would be a state of the art training center. This Italian spot on Washington street is a great spot to sit under a galaxy of string lights and eat things pasta, grilled octopus, and gelato, along with your prosciutto pie." - hannah albertine, nikko duren, matt tervooren

The 20 Best Restaurants In Hoboken 2024

"Yes, there are a lot of Italian spots in Hoboken (and most of Jersey, for that matter), but we’re especially glad that a place like Apulia exists as a more modern option that’ll satisfy pasta super-fans as well. You’ll find homemade pastas, wood-fired pizzas, and antipasti, plus some gluten-free options, but the atmosphere is more suited for a chic date night than your typical old-school red sauce joint. Sit in the back patio on a warm evening with a group of friends, tell the waiter you want some antipasti, pasta, and a pizza, and let them take it from there. The food, service, and atmosphere were all amazing! Definitely coming back to try more dishes. We had two pizzas, and they were incredible—the Bufalina mozzarella was sooo good! The D.O.P. was also tasty, though a bit salty for my preference. Overall, everything was fresh and delicious!

Google
Our favorite wood oven pizza place in Hoboken even though they are more than just their pizza. Very cozy Italian restaurant with great ambiance. Our favorite go to spot for dates and friend meet ups. Menu is concise and everything we’ve ordered is high quality because of it. Make sure to reserve in well in advanced because getting a table last min is almost impossible

Google
Without question, my favorite Italian restaurant. Pizza is light, delicious, and beautiful. Pasta is fresh, delicate, and flavorful. The ambiance is welcoming and cozy while the service is always attentive and kind. The bar is spectacular - you will find yourself happily posted up for hours with more than one fantastic cocktail in great company from the bartenders and fellow guests. Apulia is a special place. A few of my favorites: Cacio E Pepe pasta, Lemon Basil Pesto pasta, Caprina pizza, and Diavola pizza. Don’t forget about the meatballs! End with a Nutella Calzone and Cappuccino and you’ll be happier than ever.

The ambience is amazing, the bar is beautiful and the food definitely makes you feel like you are in Italy! So tasty, so well made! Loved the experience overall!

Google
The best pizza in Hoboken, easily. I don't think the other options are phenomenal but the pizza alone is worth the trip. They are also family friendly for young kids.

We tried Apulia yesterday and ordered the Ravioli Butter & Sage and the Bufalina pizza. The wait time was really short, and the service was super quick, which was nice. The food itself was good—well-cooked ravioli with a nice buttery sauce and a classic Neapolitan-style pizza with fresh mozzarella and basil. That said, nothing really stood out as unique or special compared to other Italian restaurants I’ve been to. It’s good for a casual meal if you’re in the area, but I probably wouldn’t go out of my way for it. Decent spot, but not a game-changer.

Google
Will always come to support the local fare. Thank you to the staff for doing their best, even on weekends where things can be a little hectic and demanding. The pizza/pasta/entree experience is authentic, has integrity, the ingredients and execution are S tier. Wine selection is great, as are the cocktails. You can go casual or dressed up, Apulia welcomes all, worth a visit, or 3, or always.

Google
We had high hopes for Apulia but unfortunately was not up to par with other upper scale Italian spots in Hoboken. Food: was decent but not great. We had a gluten free pizza and gluten free pasta. The upcharge for the GF crust is $6 which felt absurd especially given the size and it was nothing special. The pizza came 15 min before the pasta so thankfully we were sharing. The bolognese was okay, but was a small portion and was not the best we have had. We would have loved some parmesan cheese but the waiter never offered (the tables next to us were…) Drinks: we assumed it was like most HBK places so we brought a bottle of wine, but opted for cocktails after informed of the $20 corkage. The cocktails were a nice treat. Service: this is where things were really off. Our server was not attentive - while we were having dinner another table sat down with a different server who told them about the specials, offered them Parmesan and fresh ground pepper, refilled their water, and actually came back to check if they needed anything. We did not know there were specials, were frequently out of water, and as aforementioned the dishes came out 15 min apart. The atmosphere is cute and they have a nice outdoor patio, but it was a very mediocre experience and we left still hungry. The main benefit is you can make a reservation which is often not offered in HBK.

Yelp
Here's the deal: Apulia is a neighborhood spot and good for a date night if yin get there on the earlier side, some younger families enjoying the delicious Neapolitan pizza. It has a small outdoor dining section on Washington St. inside has a small bar area where a full menu is available. The bartender was very helpful with the menu and is great at recommending cocktails! They're true mixologists and have some wild combinations to try! The main room offers tables for parties of 2-6 people. and leads to a back outdoor room ( it may be closed it?) but it looks like a good spot for a larger private diner party) The food was incredible: not shown are the delicious calamari & eggplant appetizers!! The pizza was a seasonal special of butternut squash & caramelized onion OUTSTANDING! Definitely recommend and will be back again

Yelp
Did we get a bad chef? Our food was raw ): Ordered a margherita pizza that came out in 5 minutes. Not bad but it was not baked well enough for an oven-style baked pizza. (All the flavors are there but it was so soft, almost like fluffy white bread.) I'm also no pasta connoisseur but I'm pretty the Cacio e Pepe was undercooked OMG I was eating raw pasta! The kitchen was closed by the time we got our food so I didn't want to bother with returning the food. I was also hungry AF (which is saying something if I can still taste how undercooked the pasta was). I want to say that's "the style" but it was so dry and firm... The seasoning was really good, it was creamy. Just wish it was edible! The chef probably rushed through it since it was close to closing. One extra star because it's a very pretty place, especially in the backyard. There's a ton of ambient lighting. The staff was okay lol If you come here, I would just make sure the food is edible I want to say maybe the chef was having a bad day

Yelp
Thought this place was going to be out of business in 6 months when opened as though food was good was not sure what would bring people in. Since then they got rid of gelato area and got full bar. Food is good as only change I make is ask for well done pizza as find their pizza undercooked as they cook quickly on high temp. If made one change and it is selfish is to add some American Chardonnay by glass though understand focus on Italian only wines.

Yelp
The serve and the ambiance was amazing !! Our server was so sweet and patient with us !! We ordered two pizzas , and a shareable ceaser salad and it was literally the best

Yelp
Delicious local spot with plenty of vegetarian options. Lots of cozy outdoor seating along with indoor. Delicious pizza and specialty pasta. Their espresso martini Nd affogato are my personal favorites.
google avatar

Sama C.

Yelp
Had the pleasure of sitting outside in their back patio section. It's cozy and cool ambiance. The food was spot on! Great pizza and I believe the pasta is fresh made.

Colin S.

Yelp
Excellent restaurant with great Neapolitan style pizzas and excellent pastas. Great service and ambiance as well.

Yelp
Food is ok, nothing memorable nor delicious. Portions are tiny and it's pretty pricey. I'm not a fan

Yelp
Came here after a Yelp Event and it was great for a night cap. Tried a couple of their pizzas and the kale salad. Everything was pretty good! If you can, get a seat at the counter, it's nice to see all the action!

Yelp
Came on a random Sunday night. It's a very small restaurant with a cozy outdoor seating in the back. There wasn't much circulation in the restaurant so it was a little warm sitting inside especially with the ovens going. For food we ordered the Rucola salad, the Mariana pizza and added mushrooms, and the Rustica. The food was pretty amazing. The pizza dough was really some of the best dough I've had. It was soft and fluffy which I prefer. The salad was excellent as well. Great portions! Got some red wine I didn't care for because it was too warm for my liking. While the food was great, the service wasn't all that great. We waited a while to be greeted at the table while two servers walked by deciphering whether they were going to help us. We almost walked out when a random 3rd sever came and took our order. When we needed something the other two servers just let us sit not coming over but definitely looking at us while the 3rd server was not around. A really strange occurrence but at least the food was good. I'm being generous with 4 stars solely because of the pizza

Yelp
Clean, interior looks fancy. Great service too! I really enjoyed the food. While this is heavier foods it's not greasy at all and the house made noodles is perfection. Cacio de Pepe - 5/5 first time trying it and really enjoyed the simple dish. Who knew cheese and pasta only can taste so good? Recommend! Pizza - not the best, thinner side, the middle was soggy. 3.5/5 I'll come back here for their pastas!
google avatar

Yelp
Food was delicious and loved the tiramisu. They have a pretty good selection of vegetarian options. Should be aware that they are extremely strict about reservation time which includes arrival time and allocated time to stay which is no longer than hour and half. Service was prompt and did not have to wait long for food.
google avatar

Saniya S.

Yelp
The staff was very warm and welcoming. The outdoor seating was really cute. This place had a wide variety of Pizza and Pasta, absolutely delicious!
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
Came here and ordered a bottle of wine, the prosciutto pizza, and pesto pasta, and WOW. This place blew my mind. It was the best pizza I have had in Hoboken, hands down. The pasta was perfect. The pesto was not overpowering and tasted delicious and fresh. I would 100% recommend and plan on coming back soon.

Yelp
Definitely a great restaurant! Food was over the top excellent! Service was very friendly, and professional. Prices were mid range as well, nothing including wine was overpriced. You'll want to eat here if looking for authentic Italian Food!!! Great atmosphere!
google avatar

Yelp
Best espresso martini I've ever had. Great drinks and great pizza! Sat at the bar area which was very nice and service was excellent
google avatar

MichiganMan M.

Yelp
In the area, so decided to try. Very disappointing. Two pies, both soft and soggy in the middle. Crust around the outside edge was ok, but there are much better pizzas around. We were intrigued because the menu and prices looked similar to Razza, but the quality of the food is nowhere close. Service was friendly, though a bit slow and inefficient.
google avatar

Kaitlyn D.

Yelp
Sat at the bar. Super cute aesthetic! Bartenders were very attentive. I ordered the Rustica pizza with sausage and broccoli rabe. Came out quickly & tasted great- 10/10

Yelp
Went for an early dinner with coworkers after volunteering at the community center around the corner. It was a good choice. We ordered a few apps and a bunch of pizzas to share. It was plenty of food even tho they are personal pies. I enjoyed the seasoning and how thin they were. The aperol spritz was also solid.
google avatar

Pete M.

Yelp
July 2022 update -- better as ever -- great food and staff. And now with vino too. ! The assortment of apps and starters remains great, super fresh and expertly done. Pizza is simply the best around. Dining outside in rear patio on a hot afternoon was very pleasant.

Yelp
I came back to Apulia and ordered the same exact dish - the Cacio E Pepe. I really loved it the first time I had it and was craving to have it again. But I'm not sure why, the restaurant decided to change the pasta to a Bigoli pasta, which is a very thick wheat pasta. I don't think the Pecorino cheese worked well with it so I was a little disappointed. My wife ordered the Orecchiette E Rapini and she did like that dish.
google avatar

Gina A.

Yelp
Came here for dinner last year and have recently had the delight of dining here for lunch, so I figured it was time to give Apulia the 5 stars they deserve. Their food is seriously on another level. There are many Italian restaurants out there that are just fine but very basic. Apulia is a step above most Italian restaurants in the NJ/NYC area and I can really only compare it to eating in Italy itself. Their fried calamari melts in your mouth and includes tentacles (my favorite). So far I think their D.O.P pizza is my favorite but I'll have to come back to see if a different one changes that opinion. Their ingredients seem like the highest quality and their pizza dough might be the best I have ever had. The prosciutto they use really does taste like the kind I have had in Italy (not the thick, chewy, overly salted prosciutto you sometimes get here in the states). The cotoletta di casa is I suppose their spin on chicken parmigiana but I have never tasted anything like it before...it's so unique and absolutely mind-blowing. If you don't know what to order and you eat meat, order that! Their portions are incredibly generous and their staff is so friendly. They have a beautiful outdoor courtyard in the back, which is such a treat to be able to eat outside but off the street. Inside is very cute too. I will definitely be coming back soon.

Yelp
We have been wanting to dine here for some time now. We popped in on a Thursday night and it had such a cool vibe. We were greeted by a awesome waiter, Ryan, who was extremely nice and attentive. He gave us a few suggestions on what was popular. We went with their special pizza for the night which was a mozzarella base and had truffle sauce. It was delicious. We also went with the octopus which also was very good. I ordered the cavetelli alle cozze. The pasta was so fresh and incredible. Everything about that dish was amazing. My fiancée ordered the tagliolini Al tartufo. It was covered in fresh truffles and boy was that dish worth every sent. My only single complaint would be the fact that we left that incredible truffle pasta behind and didn't get to enjoy the leftovers the next day! We can't wait to get back here, this could definitely be one of our go to pasta spots.

Karinah S.

Yelp
First off, the service was top tier. Super friendly wait staff and manager who sat us. Lotfi was our waiter, he was so kind and recommended his favorites which we enjoyed. He also went above and beyond and went downstairs to check if they had any Diet Coke as there wasn't any behind the bar. And there was! The Cesar salad is good, although I'd prefer creamier dressing. The calamari was lightly battered so you're tasting it full on. It was very fresh! The pizza mmmm the crust was so fluffy and warm! Thin pizza with such good cheese! Would eat here again for sure! For dessert we had the Nutella pizza. Omggggg! Seriously, it's a dream. The seating area outside is so cute! And the tables inside are nice as well with good intimate lighting. Def will be back!

Steve R.

Yelp
Dads day was spectacular here at Apulia!!! Everything from the appetizers, main course and service made the day special! Highly recommend a visit. Bartender was great, a craftsman to say the least. I'd give it 10 stars if I could!!!
google avatar

Akshata K.

Yelp
Looking forward to dining here more! The ambience and the service was lovely. We ordered the diavola and the cacio Pepe. The diavola was so well done, the soppressata was so flavorful!! The cacio e pepe was perfection. I think it's one of the best cacio e pepe I have had. Can't wait to be back and try the other items on the menu
google avatar

Kathleen S.

Yelp
On a work trip and our party of four had no reservation on a Friday night, but didn't wait long for a table. Inviting ambience and fantastic service!! The calamari was perfect, nice variety of pasta (which is made in-house and there are gluten free options) and the pizza was superb!
google avatar

Emily P.

Yelp
Such a great place to bring your family if they're visiting Hoboken! We have gone here countless times throughout the years. They do offer BOB with a corking fee which is worth it if you have a preferred wine. Personal menu favorites include the strawberry arugula salad and the pizza with spicy honey, goat cheese, and hazelnuts on it (Caprina pizza I believe). The pizza sizes are closer to a personal pizza but can be shared amongst two. If you're planning on eating family style, aim for a pizza per person or 1 less than the group. They have wonderful gelato and it's a great call to stop by in the summer just for a to-go cone of gelato. If you're sitting down for dessert though, try the nutella pizza.

Pimp D.

Yelp
Casual place not too far from the Pier 13 biergarten. Good food and atmosphere - pizza and pasta joint. Friendly service. Has a backyard for al fresco dining. Recommended.

Brianna M.

Yelp
Food was amazing! only issue was there is no air conditioning in the restaurant besides a small floor unit near the front door. Could use some fans at least in the back seating area, we were sweating throughout the entire dinner

Michael P.

Yelp
5 stars. No doubt about it. The food brought me back to Italy. Pasta was fresh, homemade. The Carbonara was out of this world. Almost on the same level as my grandmas. We had 2 pizzas. They were great. Espresso Martini was very good as well. Looks like they are putting in a full bar? Will definitely come back. Many tables drinking spritzes. Will have to try Our waiter (Ryan or Bryan?) was attentive and knowledgeable. Continues to be one of my favorite spots!!
google avatar

Candice A.

Yelp
Can't wait to have theirs gluten free pizza again. Chill vibes in the outdoor space. Lovely service .

Yelp
Tried to dine here tonight, but upon arriving I stood waiting for 10+ minutes (felt longer) before someone came to ask about a table. Once the gent came, sorta just ushered me into the rear of the restaurant and abandoned me to go make drinks. No Menu no 'how about this table?'. So I stood there again in the middle of the dinning room for about 5-10 minutes like I was waiting for delivery pickup or something. The original guy never even looked at me again. It was really awkward and uncomfortable, so I left and went somewhere else. The sad thing is their food is decent from what I remember, having been once before. I was looking to refresh my taste for them tonight; but nothing doing. Perhaps the issue they don't accept jeans and a polo shirt. Perhaps because I dont have the 'look' of a normal Hoboken resident. Whatever the reason, they have fallen far down my list in Hoboken. I can cook pasta at home, I go out when Im not in the mood and looking for a little anonymous company. It used to be that folks understood that a table for one is usually a professional. Understand that they may have been really busy, but frankly the least you can do is greet 'money walking in the door'. If you make me feel not wanted, there are plenty of Italian places in NJ who will take better care of me. Two stars because I know they used to have good food and half decent service. That was a year ago though, maybe everything has changed. I guess I'll never know.

Ken M.

Yelp
Pizza was great , so were the cocktails and wine. I guess only have one gripe- we sat down at 7:05 pm at the bar and AFTER we sat they said needed the bar seats back at 730. That's not a lot of time esp at their prices would like to be able to enjoy the meal more.
google avatar

Amie K.

Yelp
A cute spot that's deceivingly larger than it looks from the outside. Plenty of tables, had no trouble getting a table for 2 on a Friday night but it was still crowded. Portions are a little small for price but the food is delicious and fresh. It used to be Byob but it's no longer as they have a bar now. The inferno pizza is really good if you like a spicy pizza, the spicy soppressata was cooked perfectly. Partner and I split the pizza and a carbonara and we didn't have any leftovers.
google avatar

Kelly V.

Yelp
This is hands down my favorite BYOB spot in Hoboken. The staff is always so accommodating and gracious. I've only had five star experiences here. If you're a first timer at Apulia you'll need to know it's BYOB and they're isn't a corkage fee. It's one of my favorite features of this spot. The second thing to know is, you'll want to order everything on the menu. I've gone with different sizes groups and we typically order something from each section. The inferno and Davila pizzas are two of my favorites. They split the menu between reds and white sauces which I really love. As for pasta, the broccoli Rob pasta is incredible. Oh and dessert, yes dessert! The Nutella calzone. This is a real thing! I didn't want to order it at first, but I'm so glad we did. One of the best things I've tried! If you're a foodie, this is a must visit. Don't by shy and ask the staff for recommendations. They really know what they're talking about!
google avatar

Kristin A.

Yelp
Dined at Apulia this past weekend - this was my second time dining here, although my first time since they stopped being BYOB. The restaurant takes reservations via TableAgent. They have a $25 per person cancellation fee within 24 hours which feels pretty steep given the type of restaurant it is. We had a reservation for 3 at 7:30 pm. The restaurant was very full when we arrived at that time so I'm glad we had a reservation. Now that they no longer BYOB, they charge a $20 corking fee per bottle. It would be helpful if the restaurant posted their wine list/drink menu online so people can look ahead of time and determine if it's worth bringing their own or not. Their wine list is pretty meager. There was only one special that night - a pasta dish, so we just ended up ordering off their main menu. We decided to share a pasta to start and then two pizzas for our main. The pesto fusilli pasta was okay - wasn't served very hot and portion was on the smaller side. For pizzas we got the Buffalino and D.O.P. The pizzas were also just okay. We liked the DOP more. I wish their pizzas were a little bit more well done - the middle of the pies are very soggy and gets messy with the toppings coming off. While the food was just average, the service was pleasant and attentive. With all the pizza and Italian options Hoboken has, this one falls pretty low on my list.
google avatar

Nonya B.

Yelp
Cute spot with great pizza and great service. Drink selection is very limited. If you can't decide, go for the pizza over the pasta. Beet salad - great flavor and perfect balance! 10/10 Cacio e pepe - yummy, al dente noodles. Definitely lots of cheesy flavor, which might be too heavy for some people. The portion was small, and I was still hungry afterwards. 7/10 Bucatini amatriciana - a little bland and lacking in sauce. It needed another textural element like a crunch. Good cook on the noodles. 6/10 Tiramisu - delicious! Don't usually get this but glad we did. It was light but still rich. 10/10 Overall we were still kind of hungry, but it was a nice experience.
google avatar

Janki P.

Yelp
Great vibe & excellent food! Burrata was delicious!! We got the buffalo mozzarella pizza & hazelnut + spicy honey pizza. Both great, but the honey wasn't spicy. The penne pasta had a unique texture, freshly made & al dante! Both affogato & tiramisu were great! They have really good espresso flavor.

Peter K.

Yelp
This is a $15 salad. Not sure if i want this to be a joke or not. Good pizza but they're personal size pies at regular large pie prices. Won't return.
google avatar

Natalie T.

Yelp
Came here on NYE where the dining room was practically to ourselves! The server gave us each a champagne flute on the house which was a nice touch. The burrata, pasta, and pizzas were all really delicious. I'd say this is one of the best Italian spots in the area- even the brick oven makes the atmosphere even more enjoyable!

Gamer E.

Yelp
Best spot in town. Highly recommend traveling here from all over to try it. They added a bar at the front and make a mean cocktail. The shop is also a great hang.

Julia D.

Yelp
Ordered takeout and it was pretty mediocre. The caesar salad was kinda sad. Just some lettuce and cheese thrown into a box and it just wasn't worth $15. Didn't come with enough dressing, either. The pizza tasted good but it was small. Definitely not worth $22 in my opinion. Overall I was just disappointed.

Corinne W.

Yelp
THEY ARE NO LONGER BYOB!! No indication on their website and $20 corkage fee which is STEEP! They're still the first restaurant coming up for BYOB service on Yelp even though that's just not true. Service was strange... we had one server doing a mediocre job and a second server trying to make up for the shortcomings of the first. Food was ***truly great*** but server had zero knowledge of how to pour a bottle of wine (lesson #1 with a liquor license!) and threw away our cork. Would not recommend sitting outside in the summer, outdoor area does nothing for temperature control and umbrellas don't cover for the random Hoboken storms well enough. If the space and service matched the food this would be a 5 star review. Plenty of room to improve.
google avatar

Jesh C.

Yelp
This spot is a gem. It is BYOB but I believe they also serve wine there. Make sure to grab your favorite bottle of wine and head on over there to enjoy a relaxing Saturday night. They have vibey outdoor seating in a mini courtyard out back which is a cozy spot to linger over dinner in the balmy summer evenings. This is a good first, second, third, forever date spot. It's off the beaten path in uptown Hoboken. The pasta is homemade so the chew!! *chef's kiss*. The waiter told me the chef makes the food just how they do back in his hometown in Apulia in Southern Italy and travels there frequently so it is as authentic as it gets! I would 1000% get the pasta here again. Their pizzas are woodfired, to 1000 degrees I think they mentioned. Unfortunately, my pizza was a little soggy in the middle for some reason so the pizza would flop over and not hold up the ingredients. I'm not sure I would go back here for the pizza. But maybe I would order a more simple one next time.
google avatar

Douglas B.

Yelp
Easily one of my favorite spots for pizza in Hoboken! Feel this one is very slept on and deserves way more love. Went with their "D.O.P." Pie this time around, which consists of apulian tomatoes, mozz, prosciutto DP, arugula, 3 year aged parm DOP & EVOO. Amazingly balanced flavors and the dough here is special!
google avatar

Nicholas G.

Yelp
Love this place. They are always packed around dinner time on the weekends so come early. No reservations either. I like trying the different specials they have going on. The apulian burrata was not the best burrata I have had. The inside was creamy but the exterior was a little rubbery. I am a sucker for porchetta so I had to try that. This one is thinly sliced with some sauteed onions. It was pretty good. We also had the grilled octopus that also had good flavor. The pizza however was the star of the show. It has a chewy crust and all the ingredients work. I tried a different one this time called the rustica. Solid pizza all around. The marinara one is on point and it is literally just tomato sauce, crust, and some olive oil.
google avatar

Ashley A.

Yelp
Delicious Italian food in Hoboken! Calamari appetizer and Margherita pizza are my favorites. It's nice to share a pizza and pasta!
google avatar

Chet J.

Yelp
Everything is made in house except the gelato which is shipped in from Italy...absolutely incredible food. The pizza is the best in Hoboken and the pasta dishes are amazing. The ambiance inside and the seating out back makes for such a great experience. Apulia is truly on the short list of some of my favorite places I've ever been to.
