"Aquatio Cave Luxury Hotel & Spa leans into the region’s understandable adoration of its caves. The five-star accommodation is designed so that visitors feel like they stepped back in time, all the way to Matera’s beginnings thousands of years ago. Your room within tuff (or stone) walls does come with all the modern amenities you need for a great stay — all 35 rooms and suites are decked out in plush furnishings, and guests have access to a massive wellness spa and a swimming pool carved directly into the rock." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Other than the location, the architecture, and the vibe of the hotel, the first positive impression I got was the service. The staff was very professional and warm during the check-in process, and they spoke great English and were generally great hosts. The rooms we stayed offered great views of the Sassi of Matera, and were really nicely designed with a touch of modern minimalism :) The real showstopper, IMHO, was the spa - it's definitely not to be missed, and a perfect way to unwind in the afternoon before a night out. I will likely choose to stay here whenever I visit Matera; as a matter of fact, I already booked a stay there for this summer to show Matera to my mother-in-law for her very first time :)

Unique and nice hotel but would not rate as 5 star service. Rooms were comfortable and spacious but bathrooms were not separated from three bedroom by door or any enclosure. Front desk staff were probably the least friendly and helpful we have encountered in Italy. When I tried to enlist help finding pizza place on a Sunday for my son, when many places were closed, was told to just ‘go to the main road’ and wouldn’t provide me with names of any places. Also booked a 50 min massage in the spa and the masseuse walked out for 15 mins in the middle of it without explanation. Traveling as a family of four and were given just two keys. When my daughter asked about getting her own key, she was met with a less than hospitable response. Disappointing because we found Matera to be such a beautiful place and I think the hotel could’ve been a better experience with warmer staff.

Lovely hotel in the old town with rooms built into the caves. Super comfortable bed in a well equipped and quirky room. The staff were friendly and any requests were dealt with promptly. There was plenty of choice for breakfast. The hotel is also in the perfect location for exploring the old town and is close to plenty of good restaurants. I used the Spa which was a very relaxing experience.

This hotel needs to urgently train their breakfast staff to understand allergies. My wife has an allergy to egg and was given a pancake that was said to be egg free only to be told later it had egg in. She was not well for two days as a result. Getting breakfast was impossible and staff had no idea. It’s like we were just being “awkward”. We were constantly told some things were egg free, to find out they were not. |The management however were excellent with the feedback and gave us a lunch by way of apology which was appreciated. We weren’t along for anything like lunch but we wanted to let them know it’s not good enough. Especially when breakfast is a key part of the hotel experience. |Pool, spa area is really nice and we appreciated the one hour slot we had. |Room was pretty nice although a bit loud as tourists just walk past the front door due to prime location. Pillows were really hard and thick. First time in our lives we’ve had to request softer pillows but they did provide them.. We couldn’t sleep on the initial ones. Not sure I’d stay here again mainly sure to the lack of food and allergy awareness with the waiting staff.

Firstly, the hotel is beautiful and in a perfect location for exploring metera. The room was sensationally designed and fitted. Be ready for lots of white and mirrors! The bed and pillows were comfortable too. Service was excellent and staff were very helpful and friendly. I’ll start with the smallest issues, firstly there is some evident ware and tear on some of the fittings in the room that, while spotless, could be replaced. It just detracts from almost perfection. The TV should have some smarts to it, seems very dated, no apps and no connectivity to anything. Where the breakfast buffet is placed is very very tightly packed, you can find yourself spending your entire time at the buffet moving out of the way for staff or other guests, makes it a competitive sport to get to browse the breakfast offerings some mornings. These are all small issues I can overlook. The biggest problem is the toilet in the room. There is no door between the toilet and the bedroom, just a small detached wall. So your toilet business is visible to whoever you are sharing the room with. Yep both sights and smells. We came up with a system of leaving the room to use the toilet at the hotel bar while the other used the room toilet for privacy. Hardly ideal. This would be my key memory of this hotel. Otherwise if you have no need for privacy this is a 5/5 hotel.
