"When the owner of Los Angeles’s only dedicated Mongolian restaurant was ready to sell it this past summer, first-time restaurateur Batbayasgalan Enkhbold and his wife, Bayarmaa Bat-Ayush, stepped up to the plate. The couple took the reins from Ganbat Damba, who owned and operated Golden Mongolian in Koreatown since 2014, and renamed it Arag Mongolian Cuisine. While the restaurant’s interior is largely unchanged from its time as Golden Mongolian, the newly expanded menu leans more traditional than its predecessor’s, says Enkhbold. Together with chef Buted Sanjaa, the couple refined many of the restaurant’s core recipes, including boiled whole lamb head, stone-grilled lamb chops, deep-fried dumplings filled with ground meat and offals, and buuz, steamed dumplings served with a vinegary slaw. Traditional Mongolian cooking is often misunderstood among Angelenos, especially with the proliferation of Mongolian barbecue restaurants across the Southland, which is neither Mongolian nor barbecue. The menu at Arag Mongolian Cuisine is characteristic of what is eaten in Mongolia, with its heavy Russian and Chinese influences and embrace of lamb. Enkhbold wants Arag Mongolian Cuisine to be a beacon for the local Mongolian community, which he estimates numbers between 7,000 to 8,000. The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m." - Cathy Chaplin

This is real Mongolian restaurant!!! Good job our meal was amazing. This is what real Mongolian meal is for Mongolians and others, not like Chinese food made for Americans named Mongolian or great khan whatever. If you want to try real authentic Mongolian meal here it is and it’s worth it. Thank you for delicious dishes!!!

I recently dined at Arag Mongolian Cuisine and I must say, it was an exceptional experience. The fried dumplings were simply divine, bursting with flavor and perfectly cooked. The beefsteak was tender and juicy, while the tefteli with ground beef was a delicious twist on traditional Russian cuisine. The proximity to Russian flavors added a unique touch. Highly recommended for a delightful culinary adventure!

Google
So good. Big portion, mid range price, fast service, and delicious. Food came faster than McDonald's. Very nice and big portions are good enough for any size man. If you are looking for some awesome soups and real Mongolian food with mutton and beef, this is the place! Tsuivan has lots of meat. Four big dumplings (mantuun buuz) are as big as McDonald's small size burgers. Service was fast. Side road parking is available. I think parking is the downside of this place. Other than that this is a hidden gem in LA.

the food was just amazing, it reminded me of my childhood, when there were pelmeni, belyashi and olivier salad. I definitely recommend this restaurant to visit

🇲🇳 MONGOLIA (via Eat the World Los Angeles) - If you have ever found yourself traveling through Mongolia, by train, bus, or even inside your own car, your most vivid memories probably all have the lingering scents of lamb dusted over them. The animal is a part of almost every meal, and is in various stages of being cleaned and cooked wherever you go. Opening the door of Arag Mongolian Cuisine is a pathway straight back to the country, starting with the aroma of lamb that hits your nose with that first step inside.

Google
My introduction to Mongolian cuisine was amazing! The lamb khorkhog here is nice and soft, with a nice spiciness level. The beef dumplings are super juicy and flavorful. I do wish the khorkhog had a little more spicy peppers, but overall a really nice restaurant.

We came here with my husband, after us four more tables came. More than 30 minutes have passed, but there is no food on our table, although the food for the other tables was served quickly. also there was food to go. what is the matter and is it related to race? I do not recommend this place.

Best place to try real Mongolian food. Khuushuur is the best!

Yelp
This was my first time trying Mongolian. I went right after getting a Pedicure at Pink Nail [by Sarah] in Ktown as the technician was Mongolian [and Korean?], called "Helen" I forgot what the name of the dishes (pictures attached tho) I tried but both were delicious. I figured Mongolian food had lamb more so tried those. The tea was ordered as our server told us there was a Mongolian tea...honestly it just tasted like warm milk... no tea flavor at all...though it was supposed to be with tea. The deep fried dish was super good. So much juice inside. Be careful you don't squirt it out. The meatballs were good as well. Very juicy n full of flavor. The sauce was great. I'd recommend both these dishes..the deep fried one more than the other. It seems if u check in u get a % discount. I was going to use it but totally forgot. Either way it was affordable n not too high. They were a lil slow in service even if there were a total of 3-4 tables. Maybe it's because only 1 lady in front n 1 lady in back cooking? I may come again, but would try another Mongolian restaurant if I find one.

Yelp
This is the only real Mongolian cuisine in the area that reliably has the delicacies such as hushuurs and buudz. Make no mistake these are traditional dishes like I and my family are used to having. The portions are big and the taste is exceptional. The service is friendly too and being Mongolian very easy to get along with . Admittedly we came late but it is still very good. Also do not expect some high end ambiance it is very functional and while more of "hole in the wall" it is very comfortable and friendly. If you ever want to try genuine Mongolian cuisine this place cannot be passed up. Try it and you will love it! Fair warning this is very much a meat oriented cuisine so set your expectations accordingly :)

Oswin Q.

Yelp
Everyone, you MUST come here!! Personally I can't say I'm someone who can tell what's authentic and unauthentic Mongolian cuisine, but the food here is incredible. I've never called a restaurant after I started eating to tell them how much I was enjoying their food. Every bite of every dish made me gasp So delicious! The ambiance of the restaurant is very cozy and welcoming as well. The people working there are extremely kind and polite as well. It's a homely atmosphere. I see tons of regulars enjoying meals here again and again. Of course, I'm about to become one of those regulars too... The portions are also generous for the price. They keep very well too. As I live close by, I'm prepared to eat my way through the entire menu soon.

Yelp
Good service delicious food. Nice and clean and friendly Definitely go visit again Large portions you can share, especially when you bring your friends, experience that what exactly Mongolian food is!!!!

Yelp
If you're looking to try authentic Mongolian cuisine, this is a hidden gem! It was my first time here so I asked the waitress for her recs and chose two of her recs and they were both good. The Tefteli (meatball) dish is a must try in my opinion. It tastes home made and fresh and healthy, but also has a lot of flavor. The beef soup with glass noodles was very hearty with a lot of filling and was perfect for the cold weather. My only gripe was that I waited some time after ordering, but there were also 3 other tables that ordered around the same time as I did. Also, you can tell the dishes were cooked to order!

Daniel T.

Yelp
Good food, friendly staff, affordable prices but they run out of some dishes so quickly

Melanie F.

Yelp
First time having Mongolian! I ordered for delivery & wow. It was a true treat. Nothing too salty, nothing too fatty or greasy. To simply explain this particular culinary mode to the untrained palate, I'd have to boil the very complex & delicious cuisine down to Russian food meets Thai meets Chinese. The buns/dumplings had the shape & color of a dim sum but the textures & flavors of all the love a Russian grandma might put into a meal. I adored this place.

Melissa D.

Yelp
The food stands out, it's not fast or cheaply made. It's really good, as is the service. I feel its authentic mongolian cuisine and stands out. I've been to a few places and like the vibe this place gives off. It's great and will come back.

Tungaa J.

Yelp
The best Mongolian food in town. Love their fried dumplings! Service is always good, nothing to complain. Overall, everyone should try this place. Highly recommend and definitely will come back for more!

Davaanaa D.

Yelp
If you looking for good Mongolian food I highly recommend this place. Delicious Mongolian traditional food and friendly staff

Cristian P.

Yelp
Ordered the Bento Box and it was really good! I got the beef one. Good amount of food for the price. The beef and rice were good. The salad was fresh and the avocado was nice and fresh. Dressing was really good too. Good veggie roll as well! I love that they included 2 yellow peppers! Service was great too. Lady that took my order was nice and showed me the menu as soon as I walked in. Definitely will be coming back again! Going to try the chicken next time.

Bret H.

Yelp
It's fake and awful food. Two people were $50, dumplings were a joke. Noodles were dry and salty. Asked for extra sauce it was unbearable have us two packet. It was dead until we walked in. Looks like family stepped in and got severed before us. Looked like sham should have left right away. Gut feeling. Don't blame them for trying to stay afloat. Serve better food.

Mak B.

Yelp
I enjoyed every bite here! Had my Mongolian friend introduce me to this place before when it was known as Golden Mongolian. Happy that with new leadership, the restaurant reopened and is in this community. Food tastes really good, hearty, and homemade. I highly recommend the deep-fried dumplings khuushuur! Also, do not forget the mongolian hot tea. The milk tea is not what you would think it is, but it's savory and warm. I've got to come back and try the rest of their menu! Parking situation - we went on a week day evening so street meter parking was plentiful on down the block. There is meter parking on Wilshire too but not sure what the allowed hours are.

Saruul B.

Yelp
The only authentic Mongolian food you can get in LA. Dumpling (fried and steamed) are my favorite!!! Also you can try an actual Mongolian bbq here, not the mall bs haha try it for yourself and also support small business because why not I order from them at least once a month and it's been very consistent

Lenafish A.

Yelp
So delicious! I can't wait to go back! Having never eaten authentic Mongolian food before, I was so excited to try this place and wasn't quite sure what to expect or order. The server was very helpful and recommended the meatball dish and the lamb dumpling soup. My friend and I split both, and even had leftovers -- it was so much food and very reasonably priced! The lamb soup was my favorite. The broth was so rich and flavorful, and both dumplings and lamb meat were generous helpings. It was the perfect hearty, warming soup for a chilly day. The meatballs came with plenty of sauce, really good potato salad, cucumbers, tomatoes and rice. The potato salad and sauce paired so well with the meatballs! Also, the meatballs themselves were enormous! The place is small and casual, with a cozy and welcoming vibe. There were Mongolian music videos playing, which was pretty cool to see! I really enjoyed the atmosphere. If you're looking to try authentic Mongolian food in the LA area, give this place a shot! I'm definitely looking forward to my next meal here.

Yelp
I moved from LA to Miami a couple of years ago, and I gotta say, I missed authentic Mongolian food SO much... I almost shed a tear just now... This restaurant changed owners, and from the last time I've eaten with the previous management, the quality of food and overall taste is MUCH BETTER! If you want to try REAL Mongolian food, this place is the ONLY ONE in the entire LA Greater Area. Coming from a Mongolian myself: MUST HAVE!

Eric P.

Yelp
I have been binge watching ARTGER youtube channel for awhile now so I found this lone authentic Mongolian place in Greater LA area. So we made the drive from OC to this place and came away impressed. The food here far exceeded our expectations. The khuushuur has a very nice crispy outside layer with a flavorful and juicy beefy filling. The buuz is excellent with a thick wrapper and flavorful and also juicy filling. Tsuivan did not disappoint as it tastes as good as it looks. Will definitely come back and this time will order 2 serving of the khuushuur and wash it down with the milk tea.

Minjin E.

Yelp
Authentic Mongolian Cuisine. They even have milk tea! However, last time I visited, there was this uncultured lady sitting next to my booth who started talking some nonsense about how milk tea is bad because it contains dairy and salt. Arag serves authentic Mongolian food. Authentic milk tea is crafted for the nomadic culture, catering to those enduring harsh weather conditions and tending to livestock. Fat from dairy and salt are essential for maintaining muscle health in such environments. Moreover, in Mongolia, we don't indulge in overly salty junk foods, so we supplement our daily salt intake with tea. If you don't fancy it because you consume plenty of salt in your typical American diet, simply pass on the tea and show some respect for the culture instead of coming to an authentic restaurant and mouthing off

Temuulen E.

Yelp
Deep-fried Flat Dumplings - 3pcs /Khuushuur/ This is the only authentic Mongolian restaurant in LA. The owners are Mongolian. All the rest of the restaurants are not Mongolian. If you wanna eat a real homemade Mongolian dish, come here. Love this place!

Sarangerel T.

Yelp
Every time I'm in LA I make sure to come eat here. I love all the dishes, but my favorite is "huushuur" with potato salad!

Meg T.

Yelp
One of the best original Mongolian restaurants in Los Angeles. Whenever I crave for Mongolian food, everything I order satisfy my craving. So good!

Linda L.

Yelp
My very first intro to authentic Mongolian food and it did not disappoint. I've had Russian cuisine before and definitely noticed the influences with borscht soup and goulash being on the menu. Many people associate Mongolian food with the likes of Genghis Khan's customizable stir-fries mixed with vegetables and sauces cooked on massive oily grills. However here, only traditional dishes are served. My party each ordered something different in order to try a variety of meals. I enjoyed each and every single one. My friends found the food to be less salty than what they were accustomed to. After reading up more about this cuisine, I found out that the use of spices are limited. I personally found it to my taste but I don't utilize much salt in my cooking and no sugar at all. I will unquestionably be back and suggest others to come as well. Maybe next time I'll muster up the courage to try the khorkhog.

Hannah E.

Yelp
Arag is where you go if you want your tastebuds to be bathed in fat, and I say this as the highest compliment. I don't eat a lot of meat, but when I do, I want it to be worth it - I want it to taste full flavored like the animal it came from. I don't want it to be some fat-trimmed shadow of itself. All the flavor comes from the fat! So when I ordered Arag's lamb soup with dumplings and the broth practically solidified on the 20 minute drive home, I knew I had stumbled upon something good. And every hot spoonful of broth was a lamb bomb. The dumplings, while great, were somehow less lamby than the broth, not that it mattered ultimately because there were also just chunks of lamb meat floating around all over the place. The carrot and cabbage salad that came with my companion's steamed mini dumplings were refreshing and cut the oil a lot. The dumplings themselves were great, but I preferred the soup. This is the quintessential winter dish (not surprisingly - Mongolia is a freezing place)!

larry c.

Yelp
Great selection of soups! Feels like such an authentic taste and I highly recommend trying the tea.

PuujeeUka G.

Yelp
Always fresh and delicious, Friendly owner ;) Dumplings are the best in town. If you want to try Mongolian dishes this is the right place to try

Britney J.

Yelp
Came here for lunch with friends. I ordered a simple fried rice with beef. The staff was very kind which makes it hard to rate this place so low. The food was not flavorful and did not satisfy which is why I must rate this way.

Chimgee T.

Yelp
Truly authentic Mongolian food!!! Forget what you know about fake "mongolian bbq" nonsense. This is the only real Mongolian food in Los Angeles. Tried almost everything on the menu and was not disappointed. My most favorites are Khuushuur (meat pocket) and Tsuivan (stir fry noodles) . It's perfectly seasoned and prepared. I wish they were open on Sundays. Only downside.

Alex D.

Yelp
The best and most authentic Mongolian restaurant in Los Angeles, if you have never had Mongolian food, this is the place to try it

Sondor E.

Yelp
Finally an authentic Mongolian restaurant in LA! I brought one of my friends here who really wanted to try authentic Mongolian food and it definitely did not disappoint. The restaurant is located in the heart of LA and seems to be a small family owned business. We ordered the hushuur, tsuivan, banshtai tsai and fried liver. My friend surprisingly enjoyed the liver the most lol. The food was really nostalgic for me and reminded me of my moms cooking. Will definitely be back soon to try more of their dishes and introduce more people to authentic Mongolian food :)

Namhyeong K.

Yelp
The bad smell of the restaurant, the staff using the cell phone, and the food taste were all not good.

Claudia C.

Yelp
Delicious food. The noodles tasted homemade. We got a bunch of different options and it was cheap. The portions are generous and tasty and taste like real, homemade comfort foods.

Vladimir K.

Yelp
Best of the best in LA. Highly recommended ARAG! My favorite Mongolian restaurant all USA

Thyrone E.

Yelp
A little pricey, but a top notch lunch. I had left my debit card there on a Friday and picked it up on Monday. The lady that works there is beautiful, and the place is 5 star clean! Over the 4 years I worked there went less than 10 times alone. The food is consistent, fresh, and the inside is spotless. The outside does not appear to be anything, but trust me walk through the door!

Andy T.

Yelp
Yummy yummy yummy So hard to describe what I taste right now! Want more already! #tooGood

Manolito Jack T.

Yelp
Never had authentic Mongolian food before. It's not Mongolian Beef or Mongolian BBQ. We had the Guriltai Shul (beef noodle soup), Buuz(traditional Mongolian dumplings) and Tefteli (Meatballs). Based on what we had, Mongolian food is very wholesome, contrary to what people think about it. It may be foreign to me but it's like comfort food. Meatballs we're just amazing. Sooo recommend this place.

Chris M.

Yelp
I came here looking for the place that used to be in the same location, the Golden Mongolian Restaurant. I'm grateful there's still real Mongolian food here in Los Angeles (NOT Mongolian BBQ!). And I was very impressed with the tsuivan I had today. I wouldn't say it was "authentic," because it was way better than that. I've eaten a lot of Mongolian food in my life (Peace Corps 96-98), and I'd say the chef here has taken the original idea of Mongolian food and incorporated flavors to accentuate it. In Mongolia, it was not uncommon for me to want to add ketchup to a plate of tsuivan. And Mongolians would not take offense at that at all, but this dish did not need it. It was delicious. I'm looking forward to going back. And I've got an order of bainsh-teh-tsai in the fridge to check out tomorrow...

Joon Hyon Y.

Yelp
The food is very authentic and tastes great. I especially enjoy their traditional meat ball entree.

Monji B.

Yelp
Real and the best Mongolian food in LA! If you never tried a Mongolia food (no, Mongolian BBQ is not Mongolian), try this place. For newbies, I would suggest ordering buuz (similar to soup dumpling at Din Tai Fung) or tsuivan (similar to padthai but very different taste and flavor).

Gvnj G.

Yelp
I got there 7:30pm and service is 100%! Very reasonable price and delicious food with good portions. I ordered dumplings with milk tea, I paid not even 20$ Highly recommend this place!

Uchka J.

Yelp
The best authentic Mongolian restaurant in the US!!! Coming from someone who grew up in Mongolia eating Pirozhki at school was a highlight from my childhood memory. It made me try the Pirozhki from Arag and oh man it did nit disappoint me at all. It was perfectly made, the stuffing inside was perfectly seasoned and done. We got 4 Pirozhki and I ate 3 of the Pirozhki and my bf ate only 1 because it was that good (my bf loved it so much too but he nice and gave me the rest ). Buuz (steamed dumplings) were great but a little bit bigger compared to what I'm used too. I prefer buuz to be smaller (bite-size) with more "soup" and thicker skin but that's how I like it personally. But overall it was great! The buuz was about 4 bite size for me and 2 for my bf. Khuushuur (they call it fried dumpling) was juicy, crispy, the stuffing was also seasoned very well done. Every time when I take my friends from different nationalities, I have them try the khuushuur (fried dumpling). Saving the best for last! We also got the Khorkhog! They call it (stone cooked lamb? I think, something like that lol I only know the Mongolian name for the dish) The lamb is cooked under pressure with the stones as well as potatoes and carrots on the side. It is extremely delicious, the lamb and the broth soaks the flavor from the stones. You can taste the natural minerals in the broth and it's the best soup to drink to fight against flu and cold. It's just super good for your immune system. The lamb was so tender and juicy. Writing this makes my mouth water HAHA. The homemade steamed noodles on the lamb is so good. Let me teach you the correct way of eating the homemade steamed noodles You rip the noodles into whatever size you'd like Then you dip the noodle in the soup (or you can leave it in the soup and eat it as noodle soup as well) and put the lamb on top and boom Enjoy the real authentic MONGOLIAN FOOD However, if you are looking forward to try this dish, I recommend calling 20, 30 mins before coming to the restaurant because the dish itself takes about an hr to make. You're welcome I came to the restaurant a while ago and I think the owner of the restaurant has changed. But the restaurant itself with the new owner has improved A LOT. The only advice I would give to this restaurant will be about the menu. People come to this restaurant expecting to try the real authentic Mongolian food. It's so hard to find real authentic Mongolian restaurants everywhere, the Mongolian beef you get from the Chinese restaurant is not MONGOLIAN FOOD. But when people come to the restaurant to try some real authentic Mongolian food, I would think that they want to know the actual names for the foods. We go to Mexican restaurants to get tacos but we don't call it "fried tortilla with smashed avocado, chopped tomatoes, meat, and whatever u get on top lol". I would love to see the menu with the real names and explanations under. Example: Buuz Mongolian soup dumplings (beef, chicken, etc) Khuushuur Fried dumplings with beef Khorkhog Hot stone cooked lamb with potatoes, carrots, homemade noodles, and broth And etc That was the only thing that threw us off because I thought my boyfriend all the food names in Mongolian so he wasn't sure what he was getting until I explained it to him. But overall the food is amazing, the food we ordered was definitely not for 2 people but we killed it all.

Ricky Q.

Yelp
Great food and service. The food is as authentic as you can get to real mongolian food. Highly recommend trying since there isn't many other places where you can get food real mongolian food like this.

Jan C.

Yelp
The girl working does NOT want to be there lol At one point asking about sauces she brought me catsup.... Besides that the food is pretty good stuff. I wish lamb was an option for the dumplings though Get the steamed large beef dumplings

Ken B.

Yelp
Best Russian-Mongolian cuisine you can find in Los Angeles. Great service and affordable prices for everyone. Thank you!

Clair M.

Yelp
Amazing freshly cooked food!!! Fried bouz, steamed bouz and borscht are the best!!! Portions are good too! The only thing that we didn't like is the limit of the drink choices. But food was delicious!

Jun L.

Yelp
I waited 10 minutes no one care to ask if I need anything the waitress passing through like they don't even see me......

Oyu L.

Yelp
1 and only authentic Mongolian restaurant in LA and they have pretty amazing service. Food is delicious . You can have Real Mongolian BBQ or Real Mongolian dumplings fried or steamed. Their soups are good, tsuivan is my all time favorite.

Jung K.

Yelp
Oh yes! Definitely recommend this place! I've tried fried noodle& fried dumplings + potato salads and it was only thirty something $ (i don't exactly remember) and I was big portion which is enough for 3 people! Taste is way better than the previous golden mongolian restaurant and it was cheaper for sure! Taste 5/5 costumer service 5/5 It was super delicious! Thanks for whole team, Cheers
