Where to Find the Best Tres Leches Cake in Houston | Eater Houston

"The long-running Houston bakery, owned by the Taqueria Arandas restaurant chain, has multiple locations throughout the city. Its tres leches comes in chocolate, Neapolitan, strawberry, or vanilla, and can be filled with mixed fruit or mocha. The bakery also offers a rolled tres leches, which comes in two sizes, and flavors like chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry. It can also be filled with mixed fruit, pecans, or strawberry." - Lane Gillespie

Used to come here to buy bread but we're definitely changing spots. Went today and tried to get bread, and there was customers touching the bread and dumping it back in the bin, which is just gross & insanity and they just leave it there so it could sell. Bought a rosca, and they were all really BURNT. Went home and had to spit it out because i was choking in how dry the bread was

Google
We just love fresh baked breads and sweets this has become one of our favorite spots. Everything is always so fresh and super good. They always keep the inside clean and let's not forget the fresh homemade tamales.

I much prefer the other location on 59 than this one. It's very clean, has all the basics but definitely not enough variety. Covid wise, everyone is wearing masks so that was nice. Easy quick transactions. Friendly staff. I really wish their super organized shelves had labels, some of us don't know what these items are or what's in them.

The bakery has a lot of sweet options. I didn’t see much savory if any at all. I would have loved some empanadas chicken beef etc. also all the names are in Spanish so if you don’t know any Spanish probably won’t understand a word and won’t know what you are buying or what to buy. They were constantly restocking and it was clean. The taste was ok not outstanding

I went to go place the order a week beforehand and got it today. Overall the picture quality was good, however they didn't get my order right. I requested a name to be put on the side and they didn't do so and I requested strawberries inside the part of the cake and they just seemed to put some kind of filling. The cake was HORRIBLE and dry, tasted old and gross, overall disappointed. This was my first and last order from here

Nice bakery. The selection was good and the staff was nice. I wish they had smaller trays (to get your items on) and there were labels (item names). Also, a part of a slice of cake was melted when I got home. My fault that I didn't get home quickly but it was unfortunate.

Bought some sweet bread and some cookies. When I got home I started to snack on the bread and cookies and both were stil. The next day the bread was hard as a rock. It goes to show that the employees are not rotating the bread. Im going to stick with El Bollilo cause there bread is always fresh.

The cakes are beautiful and delicious. I was very happy with how it came out. The reason I picked this rating is because 1 we ordered the cake 2 days in advance to be ready for fathers day @12 the cake was never made and we had to wait for them to make it. 2 the girl had called the night the order was placed asking for the photos of the theme. Never gave them the photos which is why the cake was delayed. 3. 6 different ppl tried to help us at the counter it seemed and it was very unorganized and confusing. We called b4 showing I let the lady know we were calling to make sure a certain order was ready. She said yes all cakes already b4 I could even tell her the name or invoice # and hung up. I understand its very busy but very rude. 4. And this one was personal to me. It was my only daughters first birthday and everyone had to wait on a cake that was supposed to be arriving around 12 but was not ready till 5. Very stressful having a party without the cake and having guest wait. I payed $55 for the cake good for the price and it came out like a dream. But the experience makes me hesitant to order again.

Yelp
Of course I would recommend this Arandas Bakery. I wanted to go to the one near my house but it was allegedly the closest one near my house and I was going to turn around but I wanted to try this one because I never been before. I got there early when they had recently opened and there was only one more customer there. They hadn't even put all the pan dulce in the displays. It was okay because I came for a bolillo. They have hot chocolate and coffee as well as milk juices and sodas. I decided to try their passion fruit drink. It was delicious and not too sweet! They also have these cute little jelly bottles that were raspberry, strawberry, blackberry, and grape jelly. I bought two strawberry. So I ended up buying two bouillon and I'm glad I did because I didn't like it with the jelly on it. It was too sweet to me. I actually like bolillos plain without butter. Just warm out the oven. I also tried this flaky pastry with strawberry baked in the center. It was delicious! This place surrounding the bakery was a lil sketch but not too bad. I would come here again because they offer different items than the other stores. It's clean and staff are pleasant.

Yelp

Yelp
The bread here is delicious but the only problem here are the rude staff and cashiers . A smile wouldn't kill they are so rude and disrespectful I don't know who the manager is or how they ever hire these rude ass people . Y'all need to do better and hire people that won't make us want to leave as soon as we get there. The only reason I hate coming here is the rude service the women are always and I mean always rude just a heads up before you come here.

Heather S.

Yelp
The bakery good are great but if you aren't Hispanic they are not very cordial to you. Hate that I love their bakery but hate the environment so probably won't go back.

Nancy R.

Yelp
I absolutely recommend this bakery. Is neatly clean, workers are very friendly, the bread is always fresh.

Yelp
Have been wanting to post for a while. I have ordered a few cakes from here and they've all looked amazing for a great price. Very good!

Javier P.

Yelp
I was there last week in the morning around 6am I thought I was going to get fresh bread and different varieties to my surprise there's was very little to choose from I dropped what I had grabbed and left there cause there was mainly nothing stock in . No conchas, margaritas, or cuernitos, no empanadas, no cookies , they had nothing, it's nothing like it used to be years before.

Laura L.

Yelp
Tamales are just masa, I paid for pork and only got masa. I have contacted them for a refund because I did not receive the product I wanted

Yelp
Great select of "ban de ducle" and bolillo that you can taste the freshness when biting into them. Lines to checkout moves quick. And a great select of cheesecakes and they can make custom cakes to your liking. Been coming here for years and will continue coming here as long I'm in Houston

Stephanie P.

Yelp
I ordered a cake and the manager took my order. He was amazing, and the ordering process was simple. I explained what I wanted on my cake and the baker exceeded my expectations. The taste was fantastic and the decoration wad exactly what I asked for. I made a last minute change to the flavor and they were able to assist me and change it so last minute.

Sudi T.

Yelp
They are a great bakery. I especially love their churros. Probably the best in the city.

Yelp
Worst customer service EVER!!! Been to other locations and this is the WORST. Especially the fat cop that stands in the front of the entrance. Rude and not helpful at all.

Yelp
Great place for inexpensive tres leches cakes/pan dulce. I'm not sure if the cakes in the cake display cabinet are made fresh every day but I picked one out from there for $20...it was ok. maybe placing an order for one would be best to make sure it's fresh.

Alondra M.

Yelp
I came to order a cake at this location . I had an idea in mind but was not sure. Daniela, took her the time to explain to me the ordering process and the options available. She was very attentive and patient with me. Customer service overall was excellent and quick.

Yelp
Thanks Aransas , we order a cake from there Beechnut Bakery for a Church Event and they did an Awesome job .. we was very pleased . ... Thanks..

Gabriela F.

Yelp
They are very rude and ugly people you try calling them and they take they sweet time to answer the phone. And the manager need to fix the times on the social media app because I person like me I check before going and I get there and it's closed and I know damm well they not going to put that gas on my car and if I could put ZERO start

Yelp
I've been going to this place since I was a kid. I was surprised at how they have such few reviews. This place is almost always packed! I love their pan dulce and especially love their bollios. When I go out of town to visit family in Austin and San Antonio, they ask me to bring pan dulce from Arandas. I've been to several other bakeries in Houston but I find myself always comparing them to Arandas and they do not stack up. I'm not a tres leches fan in general but there have been several occasions where we've bought tres leches cakes from here and everyone loves them. The 1 reason I don't give them a full 5 stars is because I'm not a fan of their flan and chocoflan. Other than that, I love this place.

Dilo M.

Yelp
My favorite place to get bread, cakes, and champurrado! Only thing is they don't always have the champurrado regularly , the bread isn't always ready and fresh when they open the store. Went in once and there was no bread whatsoever ever. Only two pans of bread from the night before. Ladies were un polite.. Regardless went in today for bread and a piece of neapolitan cake. It was very delicious and moist, I loved it. I just give it three stars because they're not always great with customer service. Definitely come back when I get a chance since I live in Galveston. Another plus is they hace different tupés of coffee you can buy. Piñatas, drinks (cokes, milk, juice, etc)

Pink M.

Yelp
Burn roscas is ridiculous mess up our day it was so burn and called and they did not care why would you not check that they were burn

Yelp
I've been going to the place since I was kid and I love the feeling I get when arrive. Everyone is welcoming and the bread is great. I can get my entire family a snack for ten bucks. Can't beat the price.

Yelp
I stop by here on occasion and there are walls and walls of Mexican Pasteries..today though I think I got and ate mold from one of the pastries. I do always wonder how they make so many fresh pastries in the morning..I think some of them are old. I don't feel well. the only reason they aren't getting 1 star is because I will be back after I feel better because I love those flavorless cookies with the sprinkles!

Ashley A.

Yelp
The tres leches cake here tastes sour, like it's gone bad! I've never met a tres leches cake I won't eat until today. Grocery store cakes are better than this. One extra star because at least the customer service was good.

Fran M.

Yelp
Good place to pick up mexican pastries. Very inexpensive. Serve yourself from display case. Very helpful staff.
google avatar

Adriana A.

Yelp
We went to get bread and they didn't have that much variety of bread... when I go to bakery it means it should have different kind of bread thinking like its a big store should have but no
google avatar

Krystal P.

Yelp
OMG this place is definitely where you want to be if you have a sweet tooth. They all kinds of goodies here. You pick up a sliver round tray and self serve yourself. Everything is homemade from the treats to cakes, they also have pinatas for sell. They have drinks in the refrigerator as well.
google avatar

Sasha G.

Yelp
The manager was unhelpful wouldn't answer my questions, would walk away after I asked why cake couldn't be made the way I wanted, the employee had to answer for him that the baker didn't know how to bake a cake that way when other arandas have done the same cake requested. The cake was bland, no taste couldn't add extra flavor because baker couldn't do that. The cake was falling apart was definitely not worth $240. Take your business elsewhere where they take pride in their work and will try to accommodate what the customer wants. Also staff is very rude not getting my business again I recommend the one off 59 where the bakers are better taught and do take pride in their work!

Yelp
Great bakery! Staff very friendly. All of variety of sweet bread, I definitely recommend this bakery.

Yelp
The morning I left for San Francisco, my friends dropped by with a bag of fresh pastries from Arandas and they were almost enough to make me skip my flight. I love their churros, pineapple empanadas, and palmiers (or orejas) I admit, I am a greedy pig when it comes to Arandas goodies. I once inhaled two huge cookies on the drive home. My girlfriend was shocked and told everyone I ate all the food. In my defense, there were still a few left!

Tameike W.

Yelp
Don't do it! Anywhere else but here. A cake was ordered for an event and it was delivered 4 hours later. To make matters worse, it wasn't even the cake that was ordered! They dropped the cake and brought something else. Never going back!

Juliet L.

Yelp
Don't order a cake from here what you see is not what you get. I order a Frozen cake here for my niece and told the lady I want it just as the display- we agreed- and it was done not in detail as the display. Anyone who has a party from a wedding, graduation, baby shower for the most part want there cake to be as described and when not delivered as told is a high disappointment and especially when you pay in full upfront. I spoke to the manager and her said he doesn't know why they don't do those details anymore... Then why have it on display?? Other then the cake the ban is good! Customer service sucks. So unprofessional and un-accommodating to paying customers! Tis tis!

Emily G.

Yelp
bread smells funny and there isnt much variety. typical mexican bread which you can find anywhere else ... most people come for the large beautiful cakes though....

Yelp
same quality as others, although smaller than the one off eastex in NE Houston
