Dearborn’s Arab-American Restaurants Struggle Through the Pandemic - Eater Detroit

"Hasan Alzergani, the owner of Arbeel Kabab, a restaurant specializing in Iraqi cuisine, worries that Dearborn’s food scene may soon be dominated by only the most well-heeled restaurants and that relatively newer restaurants, like his, which opened in 2018, will not be able to make it." - Zahir Janmohamed

I visited this restaurant twice last year, and the food was absolutely delicious — honestly, the best kebabs I’ve had in Michigan so far. That amazing experience made us return again recently with high expectations. However, to our surprise, the restaurant has completely changed. The interior now resembles more of a spice shop, and instead of proper indoor seating, they’ve set up a few chairs and an AC cooler outside for customers. Unfortunately, the overall experience this time was disappointing. Both the food quality and the service have gone down. I’m not sure what happened, but it just didn’t live up to the standard they had before.

Google
The worst experience ever, it was the first time and it will definitely be the last, at least we expected it to be as we saw in the pictures on the reviews but this was the truth, the meat looked bad as if it was dirty and without toasted bread or grilled vegetables, and full of tough pieces as if they were bones or teeth, and the grape leaves with vegetables were not cooked, they only cooked the rice and the grape leaves remained green without cooking.. The truth is very shocking how you, as a customer, pay significant amounts just to feel happy, but you are met with such poor service

We were worried after reading reviews about the remodel. We drive about three and a half hours a couple times a year to Dearborn for food, and Arbeel Kabab is always one of our stops. While they have changed the inside to also be a mini market, they still offer the full menu. There is a very comfortable enclosed seating area. You now just order at the counter and pick your food up. The kababs are just as tasty as they have always been, and the service is great. We will continue to look forward to our visits here!

Great meal 😋 on July 4th, our 2nd favorite Dearborn restaurant #1 be Sahara on Michigan Ave. Absolutely our favorite Iraqi restaurant for over a decade. Place extremely busy dining in and take out customers at dinner time. A very large interior and patio makes perfect for social distance order. Got our favorite the platter for 2 which fed us with leftovers mega deal. It starts with Lentils Soup n Fatoush Salad absolutely Wonderful. Then a mega platter of Meats be Iraqi Kebabs, Chicken Tikka, Iraqi Gus Beef, Chicken Shawarma, Chicken Tawook n Chicken Cream Chops. The very best deal of any Middle Eastern restaurant around metro Detroit. Also come with Platter of Rice, Bread, Iraqi Beans n Eggplant. So 35 bucks feeds a family of four Unique Meats, Great Service and flavorful Meats. Most likely you be only non Iraqi folks in the place, think place the real deal. See great reviews Yelp, Google n Facebook Enjoy. #arbeelkabab #iraqifood #iraqikebab #chickentikka #supportlocalbusiness #downriverfriendseat #motorcitymunchers

Google
Really enjoyed my food on my visit here. The kebobs were especially delicious and cooked to perfection. So juicy! Their salads were fresh and delicious as well. Loved the stewed potatoes that were served with the grilled meats and veggies.

The food was delicious. We have returned for take out after we dined in. The lamb was my absolute favorite. I wish I had more pictures

Google
Amazing, homey spot for iraqi kabobs! Our waitress was incredibly helpful and friendly and she treated us like family, she even gave us black tea on the house! We got a platter for 3 which comfortably fed our family of four with leftovers, and at under $60 that’s a huge deal. The kabobs were all super flavorful and tender and we loved the beans and the eggplant curry on the side. Will definitely be back if we’re in the area!

Google
We visited Dearborn to try Middle Eastern food and specially Iraqi food. Arbeel did not disappoint. The food was delicious. My favorite was the eggplant soup but the chicken was spectacular as well. They have products imported from Iraq too, like sodas that were already a thing in the 70s and 80s. Rabab is the nicest and most helpful young woman I’ve ever met, and his dad is so sweet too. I recommend 100%. I’ll come back for sure.

Yelp
Nice flavorful Iraqi kabab . Probably some of the best in Dearborn if you like Iraqi kabab recipe . Friendly welcoming staff and owner. The portions are good size very filling.

Yelp
Good portion of food, beef kebab and chicken kebab were both very good. The complimentary lentil soup was much appreciated on the cold day! The potato stew was just okay. We enjoyed everything!

Yelp
Food is always good, I've tried couple of their menu items but their beef kabob is my fav. Staff is always nice and the place is always clean. Will go again to try other menu options.

Yelp
Arbeel Kabab is an Iraqi restaurant with some excellent food. We usually get the family tray, which is enough for a family and still have leftovers. They don't give as much food as some other restaurants, but everything is high quality. On my most recent trip, I got: Arbeel Family Tray #1 ($34.99) - You get a choice of white bean, eggplant, or okra stew to start. We got the white bean stew - well stewed beans in a tomato broth. Good flavor throughout. It also comes with a salad that's pretty normal. The rice is perfectly cooked basmati. Unlike a lot of other places, they give an appropriate amount of rice here for the meat. Normally I have to order an additional side of rice, but not at Arbeel. The meat quality is great. The chicken tekka (similar to a tawook) is super moist, right on the cusp of still having some pink. The meat and chicken guss - hard to describe, but the flavor profile is totally different from a Lebanese shawarma. Both are juicy and retain that satisfying browning from the scorched exterior. The meat and chicken kababs (similar to kafta) have a softer texture than kafta and retains moistness so much better. The chicken cream chop is fried chicken - hard to not be delicious. The platter came with 2 large flatbreads (the type that is generically named khubz or "Arabic bread" at most of the Iraqi grocery stores in Metro Detroit). I feel like these used to be fresh baked in house, but these felt like they were definitely from an outside source. Or perhaps we were just unlucky and got day old bread. Not that they are bad, just not as fresh as they used to be. Large Hommous Plate ($8.49) - The hummus has a great balance of tahini, chickpeas, and oil. Not very lemony. It's a good hummus but not outstanding. The only real complaint I have is that it comes with a only single piece of bread, which is not nearly enough for the amount of hummus you get. Arbeel is definitely a nice restaurant to visit, especially if you're looking for a slight departure from the many Lebanese and Yemenite restaurants in the area.

Yelp
The service is nice and quick ... the food wasn't that great ... the chicken was more on the dry side They are kids friendly and the menu for the kids only has 2 options which what most kids go for... I'll be back to try other things on the menu

Yelp
$6 dollars for one swarma was a stupid amazing price! It was also one of the best swarmas I've ever had. I wish the fried were more flavorful, but no complaints for the price and amount. Service was quick, and the restaurant was a more casual, laid back diner vibe. It had booths and tables, and large windows. One of the best and affordable places to get food in Dearborn!

Yelp
Me and a friend decided to check this place out for Dearborn restaurant week. The deal was for 2 meat sandwiches and fries, so that's what we got. The meat sandwich was fantastic. The bread was so fresh and soft. The meat was perfectly acidic and seasoned well. The fries were very similar to McDonald's (in the a good way!) - crispy, and tasty- missing a bit of salt. They ended the meal with a cup of tea Service was fast and everyone was polite. Came for the deal, but I'll be back to try more things on the menu.

Yelp
The food was really good and fresh! It felt like I was eating back home but the service was not the best to be honest like we had to get up multiple times to make the order or to ask for boxes or to get the check. The waiter was just not coming in to check on us at all. But other than that the food is 5 stars

Yelp
Love this place excellent food tasty fresh also beautiful restaurant to dine inn . Service friendly. Worth to go

Yelp
Arbeel Kabob is an Iraqi restaurant that also serves Mediterranean food and is an excellent place for any meal and any occasion! The meal we had last night was fit for a Sultan! They give very generous portions here. The service from the very nice lady server was so friendly that we felt like we were at a friends house. Plenty of free parking and outdoor seating during the season. We ordered appetizers and also ordered the family platter for 2. If you order this, you get to try a variety of what they offer and it's enough for 4 people! It's the best! We started off with a very creamy lentil soup that was very comforting. We then had the best hummus I ever ate in my life! It was soft, smooth and was really addictive. We couldn't stop eating it. We then had the falafels which were shaped a little differently than most places but they were served hot and tasted very good. We moved on to the salad which was refreshing with the dressing of olive oil, spices and fresh squeezed lemon. The huge warm breads are made in house to accompany your meal. The meat platter was show stopper stunning and every meat item we ate was flavorful and melted in our mouths! We also received a bowl of vegetable stew to eat with the rice. I think anything you order here is going to be delicious. To top it off the hot tea and sweets at the end really finished out a very nice evening here. My favorites from this meal was everything, but if I had to pick then it would be the hummus, boneless carved chicken and the lamb and chicken kabobs. Beautiful place, people and of course the wonderful food!

Yelp
You had me at chicken kafta. There is nowhere for you to stand for a carry out order here at all. I ordered a half order of chicken kafta, chicken shawarma with side of large hummus, a small salad and a large salad and a lentil soup to go. Order takes about 25 minutes. It's busy inside, that's great. They ran out of hummus, had to wait another 5-10 more minutes for them to make some more or cancel it on my order. Hummus is another must with middle . They don't have any garlic spread here, told me it's a Lebanese thing and they don't have it here. Bummer, we eat our shawarma and kafta with garlic sauce, always. Had to go pick it up elsewhere then. $55.06 is our total for our meal tonight. I do like that they gave us the big flat bread, it's cold since home is half hour away, but it's still chewy. The hummus is really bland, lacking in flavor, lemon or anything actually. Did they miss some seasoning in their haste to make a quick batch for my to go order or something. The chicken kafta is dry, quite so in fact. Good thing I got some garlic sauce elsewhere. The chicken shawarma meat is thick and mostly white meat, but it's dry too. The large and small salad aren't much different as far as size goes. They are both unfortunately made with iceberg lettuce. Romaine or a mix would be better. Dressing is decent at least. Some pita chips somehow made it into my salad. It would also be best to keep the dressing on the side since it was rather soggy by the time I returned home. The lentil soup isn't bad, a bit runny, but okay as far as flavor.

Yelp
Great food at a fantastic price and absolutely huge portions. The red meat dishes are especially good and it's great for a group!

Yelp
Tasty food that's reasonably priced. Ordered a combo meal for 2 and the portions were sizeable. Food was delicious. I would definitely visit again.

Yelp
Wanted to introduced my cousin from Korea to Middle Eastern food. I have been to lot of establishments in town, so I wanted to try something new. After researching, found this place and stopped by. It wasn't busy when we walked in, was told to sit at the booth, so we did and grabbed a menu off the other table. After reviewing the menu, we went with the following: - Mix Grill (Kabab, Tekka Beef and Tekka Chicken) - Baby Lamb - Fattoush Salad The salad was good, however they over used the salad dressing. They could have used half the amount and it would have been perfect. Baby Lamb (Quzi) - the lamb was tender and great, but this the mixed grill was better. This came with soup, we went with Potato soup - which was tomato based, as for taste it was ok, I would skip this. As for the mix grill, the kabab was the best, the beef was bit over cooked, would have been better if it came in medium rear. The chicken was least favorite of mine, I felt like it was bit over cooked. We never got salad with the Quzi order, but oh well. The service was bit slow, didn't get a refill with our water during our visit as well. Not sure if I'll revisit.

Yelp
Support this business. Food is great, establishment is clean and nice, and majority of the employees are kind. Everyone will have a different experience. This was mine: I ordered a food tray for 5 today that came with a variety of grilled meat, shawarma, and skewers of meat and chicken over a bed of rice. The tray was very large and there was more food than for 5 people. The portions are great and they come with a salad and with three containers of stew depending on what you prefer. We got white bean and it was delicious. The establishment is very clean and most of the employees are kind. They just moved to this location and business looks like it was been doing well compared to the other businesses that have opened up and closed in this location. When I came in to pickup my order today, I came with a little over $50 and enough to cover tax. I found the menu online(attached below) and to the right column, third row..it says 49.99. I wasn't told the price when I called and ordered. I just assumed the prices didn't change. I didn't mind either way. What bothered me is when I came in and had my cash ready in my hand, and they told me the price was a little over $60, I was a little puzzled and somewhat anxious because I needed to pull my card out. I asked the women with the black hair at the register if I can do $60 in cash and the approximate $4 bucks on my card. She scrawled and gestured in a rude way when I was just being kind..she left the register and called someone else over to ring me out and I was just confused. I didn't do anything besides ask if I can make a split payment since the menu price was wrong. The second women was wearing a hijab and she was nice and normal, transacted it instantly without a problem. Nevertheless, I will continue to support this business despite being off-put by the incident. I hope they can train some of the staff better. There's no need for being unkind. I always respect people and treat them with kindness and full empathy. I will be leaving this same review on Google.

Yelp
Very impressed with the authentic meal we had at Arbeel Kabab. The portions were generous- the Family Tray #1 (for two) fed me and Conor for daaaays. Really enjoyed the flavors, overall.

Yelp
I went few times to order carry out food . Long time ago there was some mistake with order . So now I have to admit... food is great . Fast prepared nicely served delicious. Love Iraqi food . Service is also great. I recommend this restaurant to everyone. It's beautiful decor inside and great to dine inside as well
google avatar

Karim J.

Yelp
Iraqi food is very different from Lebanese food. It doesn't skimp on the fat or spices and it's generally more filling. I absolutely love the beef kabob which was my favorite. The rice and stewed beans were amazing as well, especially with the taboon flatbread that comes with it to soak up the broth. The sliced beef and chicken (guss) was a bit dry but still had good flavors. Ask for the spicy mango sauce and a side of garlic spread, you will not be disappointed. The inside of the restaurant is quite nice looking as well. For a little over $20 this tray was a great value meal.
google avatar

Yelp
Worst restaurant I tried in my life. Food is dry and lady at register is rude. The food is dry , the meats have less spices and their rice was the worst ever.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places for having middle eastern food in Detroit. The kabab is amazing , I can easily say this is one of my favorite kabab ever , we ordered Iraqi kabab and tekeh, I was enjoying every piece. The food portion was huge but was that delicious that we did not left anything on our plate The other amazing drink they have is yogurt drink. That was so delicious and unique, but be careful if you order that , it does not have any alcohol on it but make you so chill relax and sleepy. The restaurant is nice and pleasant. They have a nice decoration , specially the frame on the wall that shows different cities and roads in Iraq. I really felt I am in authentic nice restaurant . You could feel the culture when you just walk in there. The service was great, Shaima was our waitress, she was so welcoming and sweet. She was smiling and she was fast and nice. She made the food be more enjoyable . Next time I'll be in Detroit i'll go back there for sure.

Yelp
Haven't been there for over a year, but it randomly popped in my google search while l stopped by Dearborn today. I was unsure at first since it wasn't in the cramped parking lot that I remember it used to be. But I'm immediately convinced after I see the food! Still best Kabob! They have moved and up their game! Got party tray for 2, everything is so great and the portion is huge! Love their kabob! And their soup and salad is also very tasty! Would love to dine-in instead of takeout sometime!

Jesse A.

Yelp
The food is good but service is weird. I don't know why the women who work their make you feel so uncomfortable.
google avatar

Moody A.

Yelp
This restaurant has gone down tremendously. They no longer make the bread fresh. The bread is generally premade and heated. The only good thing is the kabob. Everything else has gone downhill from the food to the service. This is really unfortunate.
google avatar

Moe A.

Yelp
I Went here to try Iraqi food and was really excited to taste what they have. The place on the inside has a good decor and looks clean. And the service was ok. However, the food is what really disappointed me and my friends - for several reasons. One, the guss (or shawarma) Chicken was hard and dry and no flavor. It was actually embarrassing to serve. As for the meat Guss it had a very bad aftertaste. The kabobs were ok nothing too special but eating them was fine. And the tikka chicken was not horrible either. Dry but it tasted fine. Their salad and soups were good. And the rice and bread. Those were fine. Prices are ok too. This comes as a sincere advice but they should change their Guss, and make their kabobs better. Dont overtook or serve anything dry and hard and flavorless. I hope it changes.

Yelp
Generous portions and good taste; skip the stews. Service excellent and fast. Nice updated decor.

Yelp
shawarma was dry and could have been better with some type of sauce or hummus. very plain food pretty disappointing. asked for rice and got fries instead
google avatar

Yelp
Probably one of the most flavorful authentic iraqi restaurants I have tried in michigan, and I've tried MANY! the place is casual, located in Dearborn, nothing fancy at all, with maximum 10 tables. they seem to do a lot of takeout and catering, I have tried their kabab and bbq beef souvlakis, full of unique and athentic flavours. One thing though, double check your takeout order! last time I placed a takeout order for 9 sandwiches, picked up and crossed the border to Canada only to find out that I only have 5 wraps and I was across the border! wasn't a good surprise!

Omar K.

Yelp
Great customer's service, delicious food, absolutely worth driving out of state. I would recommend it to anyone misses the taste of overseas's food
google avatar

Yelp
Decent food but Way to pricy to be honest, if the prices were better then I would make my review higher but I did like the food.
google avatar

Silvia C.

Yelp
I love, love, love this restaurant. The food is amazing, the portion size is good and they are very consistent in their product. Always a good experience although I only used them for takeout. They never got my order wrong and they never missed anything. Highly recommend this place. Keep up the good work guys

Yelp
This place is very recently opened , it's another branch of Arbeel kabob on greenfield but with more seating area and decent interiors, food tastes the same as original Arbeel kabob's , I usually go with lamb kabobs with rice and egg plant stew . It's a huge portion for lunch . The service was good .

Yelp
0 stars the worst food in history of meditation food my plate had dish soup in it and it was wet the salad has no flavor and tapola was very salty and tasted bad my kabab was very over cooked and my fries that's for another story overall 2 and 1/2 out of 10
google avatar

Yelp
Tried this place last weekend. With all of the wonderful middle eastern food in the area I'm surprised at how poor this one was :( I don't like to leave bad reviews but our take out was pretty disappointing. The falafel sandwich had a few overcooked falafel and lettuce and a tiny bit of tomato. It was so dry and blah. Where's the sauce? Pickles? Etc! The hummus was fine. Nothing spectacular. It was served with one piece of bread. Not nearly enough for the amount of hummus. It was all just very blah :(

Russ W.

Yelp
I'm from Chicago and we always here how good Detroit middle Eastern food is and this place is a good example.. Nice clean place and nice people here.. plate for two is big! And price you can't beat.. Will be back here for here

Yelp
I had the shawarma plate a while back and I was craving the well-seasoned meat with the tangy sauce. I was on my way to the airport and Arbeel Kabob was conveniently on the way, so I stopped in for a quick bite. I'm greedy and would've loved to order the plate, but I was going to have to go through airport security in a minute and didn't want to carry leftovers, so I opted for the sandwich, which is a steal by the way. The sandwich was $2.99. When the sandwich came out and I took a bite, I was greeted with the delicious shawarma, fresh veggies, and that tangy sauce that I've only had here. It was the perfect portion for lunch, and I didn't have to eat airport food. I think I might make it a regular stop on my way to the airport.

Zainab H.

Yelp
Very delicious food good customer service but just one person was working.she was taking order and taking food to table

Mohammed A.

Yelp
The dirtiest place I have ever seen in my life, especially the bathroom, and I wonder how people eat like this place.
google avatar

Farah A.

Yelp
Don't let the small dining area in a small shopping center fool you. Absolutely loved the Kabab here. It's iraqi style leaning very soft and fatty - melts in your mouth. The portion sizes are quite large. The lentil soup is very filling and again authentic Baghdadi style. We ordered Kabab with rice and tasted several stews- the okra, eggplant, and white bean that were so homey. My children, husband and loved the food. I will be back for sure.

Wisam A.

Yelp
Very bad food everything was old and frozen the meat smelled very old the place is not Iraqi and the food is Fake Fake fake I do not recommend Very bad

Yelp
Good customer service, but the food not the best, the rice cooked so well but the meat (Kabab) is not the best, it's not cooked well from inside.

Yelp
Generous portions. Flavorful food. Lovely atmosphere. This is one of the greatest places you want to be.
