Philadelphia’s Hidden Gems: Best Bars, Restaurants, Parks, and Shops | Eater

"The Old City neighborhood is jam-packed with galleries, ranging from tiny, feisty upstarts to long-established landmarks. Arch Enemy is one of the best, a large contemporary space where brightly colored, eye-catching images practically jump off the walls. It specializes in work that engages the imagination, often inspired by comic books and fairy tales, and occasionally hosts “locals only” shows, which means this is a great place to spot up-and-coming artists (and maybe pick yourself up a nice investment piece). Art lovers and anyone in search of a fun time should keep in mind that the first Friday of every month means a lively neighborhood-wide party, with art galleries and shops throughout Old City staying open late so locals can stroll around drinking wine and checking out the latest creations." - Vox Creative

I got the chance to visit for the first time while traveling from out of town. All of the featured exhibits as well as the front spaces full of both 2d & 3d art were absolutely great. The fifth edition of their Spectrum, and the Alex Sugar solo/debut show were absolutely captivating! A couple of notable things about this gallery: editions of hi-fructose & juxtapoz are sold in the front lobby. The Instagram pages are active at posting, tagging for their shows and similarly, the website catalogues the art extremely well!

My boyfriend and I stopped by in March and we were obsessed. I could have spent hours looking at each piece. It was perfectly curated and one of my favorite galleries I’ve been to. If you’re in the area, DEFINITELY take a look.

This gallery exhibit quite interesting artist’s works. It is worth to pay a visit and evaluate with your curiosity. For the artist, curiosity is the main sauce of ceeatiain.

We hosted our rehearsal dinner here, we had a casual buffet and beer and wine that we brought in and they provided a bartender and tables and chairs as well as a playlist, a photobooth, and obviously the amazing space and artwork. Our guests loved the space and have been talking about the artwork since. It was a unique and beautiful spot to welcome our friends and family to Philly.

Yelp
This is an awesome gallery. When we were lucky enough to hang out here last week, the pieces on display were alternately beautiful, dark, haunting, freaky, creepy, and most certainly conversation pieces. I'm a fan. Combined with a well-lit, large and well-appointed space with a very accommodating staff, it's unsurprisingly an excellent place to host a private event. My only issue with the entire space was the spotty wi-fi, which made using the Sonos music system a bit of a headache. Perhaps it would've been better if (excuse my language) we were not on the "Arch Enemy" network, but the "Suck A Bag Of Dicks" network. Or maybe we should've tried "Peg Me Like A Dirty Whore." I guess we'll never know.

Yelp
I had loved Gallery ML(http://www.yelp.com/biz/gallery-ml-philadelphia) when it was previously located on 1st & Market. But when it packed up and moved for Arch St I instantly lavished over the possibilities that a larger gallery space had to offer. And I especially loved the fact that it was partnering up with another alternative gallery in Arch Enemy Arts to be a double feature of the abstract and surreal. And since that time I have seen some of the most standout art exhibits that I have ever come across. The hollowed halls of this incendiary gallery have featured the likes of standout local and national artists like NoseGo, Scott Kirschner, members of the Tiberino Family, Michael Motorcycle, and more. And its displays have been dedicated to the films of Terry Gilliam, Showcased bizarre pop culture inspired fan art, featured semiotic weapons, and more. wheather its dark and twisted, brazen and colorful; and is painted, photographed, sculptured, or street art inspired; the art has never failed to deliver something that stands out.

Yelp
I experiences with Arch Enemy Arts are exclusively First Friday events. Keeping that in mind, this studio is absolutely awesome. I find the art on display to be simply amazing. All very unique and a bit non-traditional. The staff is unassuming and doesn't pressure you. I always make it a point to visit here on First Friday because of all of the above factors. I stay because of all the above factors. And I'd buy art here because of all the above factors. Get it?

Yelp
An artist I follow, Joe Menna, had a stunning HP Lovecraft piece on display during their March showcase. I missed out on his earlier Edgar Allan Poe and wasn't going to make the same mistake twice. I called the gallery on a Monday and spoke to the lovely Lawren. She answered all my questions (I was purchasing the piece from out of state) without a hint of irritation (I asked a lot of questions). I paid for the painting over the phone, she packed it up expertly, and it shipped down to me within days. It arrived in perfect condition. I'm ecstatic to have this stunning art in my home. I've never set foot inside this gallery yet they gave me one of the best art buying experiences ever. The process was so smooth that I have their website bookmarked and will look to them in the future when I have an itch for more art.

Yelp
I was only in town for a few days, but was determined to buy some art from a local artist. After visiting four different studios I finally found something that peaked my interest. The sculpture is an original by Kristen Egan that I'll proudly display on my shelf at home as a reminder of my visit to PA. Thank you to the young lady that helped with all my questions. The studio was great and priced just right.

Yelp
An amazing collection of paintings, sculptures, and prints from new, upcoming artists. The upfront shop is filled with affordable art work and they have a gallery cat!

Yelp
Tucked away from the other galleries along 2nd, this was by far my favorite stop during gallery hopping on First Friday. It is a larger space than i expected from the street. Lots of room to wander and get pulled in to the art. Freedom to breathe in the artists talent without feeling rushed through with a crowd peering over your shoulder. Highly recommeded to anyone who liked modern, future-famous artists who will hopefully make a big name for themself.

Yelp
a cool space. definitely one of the first stops i hit on first friday. to describe the place in more detail: there is art on the walls for you to look at. usually art made with paint. paint on walls. often colorful, inspiring awe and wonder. like when you were a child. do you remember that?
