A World Tour of Amazing Arches

"One of the most iconic pieces of Roman architecture was the triumphal arch. Hundreds were built all over the former empire, but only about 50 are still standing, and very few are preserved in a good state. The best-preserved example is the Arch of Trajan in Benevento. It was built by emperor Trajan between 114 and 117 to celebrate the victories in Dacia and the inauguration of a new road, called Via Traiana, connecting Benevento and Brindisi, an alternative road to the existing Via Appia. When the Lombards governed the town during the Middle Ages, the arch became part of the city walls, serving as a gate known as Porta Aurea (Golden Gate), but the walls were demolished in 1850, on the occasion of the visit by Pope Pius IX. The limestone arch is 51 feet tall and 28 feet wide and almost completely unscathed, preserving its 1,900-year-old appearance. It features some inscriptions and detailed sculpted decorations depicting Trajan’s triumphal procession after the conquest of Dacia, along with other scenes celebrating the emperor, the senate, and the people of the empire. Personifications of the Danube and Mesopotamia can be found alongside depictions of the Four Seasons, Rome, Fortune, Victory, and Military Loyalty." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The Arch is in the pedestrian zone ( no cars) you are free to walk the area. It’s is known as/for la Strega witch or witch city. There is plenty of spots in the area for street side refreshments and more formal options.

A very historic arch that has stood for decades; nearly 2000 years. Benevento is a unique town fettered with history. Most attractions are within walking distance. This arch is not to be missed. You can find out more about the arch by visiting old church ruins/building just down the road (Monumental complex of Saint’llario a Port’Aurea. Get a €6 adult or €4 per younger person which gives you access to other worth visiting museums in Benevento.

The Arco di Traiano, a Roman triumphal arch in erected between the 114 and 117 a.D. to honor Emperor Trajan during the inauguration of the "Via Appia" (the road that connected Rome to Brindisi). The piece of architecture, nicknamed by some as "The Triumphal Arch of Benevento" is the work of Apollodoro di Damasco, the same Syrian architect in charge of the Traiani Forum in Rome, and features bas-reliefs of scenes from the life of the then sovereign.

Let's you imagine the glorious Roman past as it was built between 114 and 117 (as per wikipedia). Nice little place to visit. Perfect for pictures. Has many awesome coffee shops nearby that makes the place worth the visit when in Benevento.
