5 Meals For A Fiver: Bethnal Green - London - The Infatuation

"Your order: Bacon, egg, chips, and beans (£5) A proper workers’ favourite, the Arches is a friendly caf tucked under Bethnal Green Overground that is seemingly required, by some unwritten social law, to always have at least two people eating a combination of pig and yellow runny eggs. And you should be one of them. Like any good caf, your choice is up to you, but being proud heathens, a plate of bacon, crispy chips, a pool of baked beans, together with a runny yolk is a combo we find hard to turn down." - jake missing

A proper British caff! Tucked away, as the name would suggest, in the Arches of the overground bridge just a short walk from Bethnal Green station. The food was excellent and easy to order as you’d hope. The service was warm and friendly, I believe it’s a family business, which is always great to see too. I enjoyed the old school 4 seater tables and the brickwork interior is a nice touch, but the thing that really makes the places charm is the quiet rumble of the trains passing overhead! I will definitely be back, and bringing friends.

Kind service in a place with great atmosphere under the railtracks. Food was really good, but not outstanding. Chips could be a bit crunchier, green peas could be more moised or steamed. But those are details, after all we were really satisfied with a great breakfast experience. 5*

Arches Cafe – A Hidden Gem Beneath the Tracks We stopped by Arches Cafe in Bethnal Green and were genuinely surprised — in the best way. Tucked under the railway arches, this family-run spot serves up classic British comfort food with heart and hospitality. The full English breakfast was generous and well-balanced: crispy bacon, golden eggs, and mushrooms that actually tasted fresh. The tea came in a proper mug, and the toast was just right — no frills, no fuss, just good honest food. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, with friendly staff who clearly care about the place. It’s the kind of café where locals linger and newcomers feel instantly at ease. Arches Cafe may look modest, but it delivers warmth, flavour, and a slice of East London charm. A lovely surprise — and one we’d happily repeat.

The business is spotless and beautifully maintained, with a warm, cozy atmosphere that makes you feel welcome right away. The food was absolutely delicious—full of flavor and clearly made with care. On top of that, the service was outstanding: genuinely kind, attentive, and full of enthusiasm. Altogether, it was a wonderful experience that I’d be happy to return to again and again.

This place is great! Amazing little café under the arches (clue is in the name) of an elevated railway. I had a breakfast here and couldn't fault it. Sensible prices, charming staff, very clean, good food, oh and the coffee was good as well. My photo of the menu is dated 15th December 2023. Highly recommended.
