Ardanaiseig Hotel | Best places to stay in the Scottish Highlands

"Close your eyes and imagine a picture-perfect, Highland hotel – the image you’ve conjured up probably resembles the Ardanaiseig.    Built in the Scottish baronial style, this romantic, creeper-clad, turreted, grey stone beauty on the shore of a dreamy loch, is straight out of a fairytale, with huge sash windows, roaring fires and antiques scattered around.   Bedrooms are flamboyant – bold boudoir reds, four-posters and roll-top baths, with every activity you could crave on your doorstep, from deer stalking to wildlife photography. For a more contemporary feel and total privacy book the Boat Shed.   There’s no spa but you can book a therapist for an in-room treatment, from a vigorous Swedish massage to relaxing Indian Head massage.  Right on the loch this state-of-the-art timber and glass construction is a romantic bolthole.  " - Lucy Gillmore

I sincerely hope this hotel reopens with the same ambiance and staff as were there when we stayed. The room was lovely, the staff couldn't have been better despite knowing they were being made redundant. The food was superb as was the location. Great value for money. The whole place was spotlessly clean. It was lovely and peaceful while we were there though I imagine they had great parties there.

To get there is annoying interesting experience. Some 10km on one way lane. But through beautiful nature. And then you get to this romantic hotel. Old mansion next to the lake, with forest around it. Super welcome by super friendly staff, up and down some stairs to get to our romantic room, with huge (hard) bed and stunning bathtub in adjacent room. Yes, renovation would have to be done, but this is history right there. We used the sitting room downstairs for drinks with beautiful view over loch Awe. And did a forest walk around the mansion. It was just great. Thank you dear staff for making our stay special.

Arrived to what appeared on the exterior as a castle like hotel . Once inside it was very run down and not very clean . The room was tiny and the bed had springs coming out that I felt all night . The meals are mediocre at best . The grounds were not like on the website and unkempt . We received a letter upon check in that they are aware the grounds are not kept and intend to in the future work on them . We booked for 2 nights but being the first night was the worst sleep I’ve ever had we checked out early . The staff was very nice and pleasant when we engaged with them . We did get charged for the second night even though we were leaving and explained that the room was not up to standard . I recommend passing this one by and going to another hotel that meets comfort and cleanliness standards .

A gorgeous, antique-filled Scottish baronial mansion sitting very comfortably beside one of Scotland’s most beautiful lochs in its own grounds full of beautiful and huge trees, and colourful rhododendrons. Only a few, uniquely-decorated, guest-rooms so the place is never busy, attracting couples who want to enjoy fine, tranquil, natural surroundings. No spa, swimming pool or function suites. No conference facilities, no nightclub, no evening entertainment. No traffic noise. No noise! Just an owl at night or a distant cuckoo during the day. Lovely staff, beautiful food, antique-filled rooms. Very homely and very relaxing.

My husband and I stayed here in June for our Anniversary and couldn’t have been happier with the experience. The staff was friendly, rooms clean and comfortable with a beautiful view of the Loch, and the food exquisite. We had the best time “getting lost” woods, which were nothing short of magical. Thank you to all the staff for an amazing stay.

Booked the hotel to meet with friends great location and great views. The hotel is an old stately home and the the interior reflects this with high ceilings and large ornate salons. However the words we found for it during our stay were, full of character and quirky. The once great house is showing it’s age a bit. Well worth the trip (the road is 10 miles of single track) but the views are spectacular. The food was good but unexpected expensive. All together a great weekend.

This has got to be my favourite place to stay, the hotel is just a stunning piece of history and relaxation. From the moment you arrive to the moment you leave, you’re treated to the unique experience of this charming place. The staff are warm and friendly and comfortable to be around, they treat you like old friends returning for a visit. The rooms are stunning pieces of individuality and the surrounding grounds are simply heaven to walk around. |The food is out of this world. Everything has been catered for. |I’m so sad that this hotel is closing, we’ve had several stays here and would have loved to continue going there for a few days of relaxation. |5 stars isn’t enough!

This sadly may be our last chance to write about this wonderful hotel. We found it last year and have returned three times since. Many have called it magical and romantic and quirky and it is all those things. It is also wam friendly personal and yet professional; a genuinely unique place to stay and a privilege to have that opportunity. It is also of course exceptionally beautiful both as a building and in its position on Loch Awe. What however we will take away is the kindness of all and our regret that such an extraordinary establishment may close.

Yelp
This hotel is worth the effort to get to it - It is 10 miles down a single track road that has some beautiful trees and woodland, apart from a few houses there is nothing else about. The hotel is in a isolated location on the shores of Loch Awe. After a long drive down windy single track road, you reach the epitome of a charming country hotel. To be fair it looks like its seen better days, but the hotel is full of period decor set in delightful (if a bit run down) grounds. Our room was very clean and comfortable with a nice modern shower, though possibly not as nice as others because we had a dog friendly option. It had a lovely little conservatory and access to the garden but was a bit noisy as the people upstairs were banging about late at night and all morning. The gourmet taster menu that is presented each night is absolutely wonderful. Full of innovative dishes, the menu makes great use of local produce and things the chef has foraged from the gardens. The venison was very tender and the duck we had amazing. Dessert was also a hit for us too and while the portions are small they were just right to enjoy the different food and courses without feeling too full. I dont think I would want to have a £50 tasting menu everynight though and there is no other option on offer hence we just stayed the one night. The service was some of the best I have experienced in the restaurant. Fingers crossed you wont be on a table behind two old half deaf people like we were as it was very hard to enjoy your meal with the booming voices next to you for three hours discussing the good old days - nightmare. Its maybe a bit pricey and could do with offering other options for food in my opinion but was lovely for a night. The only other negative was that the gardens gave the impression of having been beglected despite the fact we are coming out of winter it needs a good bit of work. If you want a romantic place for a special time away, you would be hard pushed to beat this hotel!

Yelp
When I booked the hotel I was thinking what would best fit my travel plans and the area I was driving towards, Was I a bit shocked about the price? Yes I was, and still, there was a certain fascination about the mystic and Gothic aspect of the building style embedded in a very remote area without cars, masses of people nor the everyday conveniences that you might be used to. It was late in the evening during spring time and we wanted to get to the hotel as soon as we could. On the road to Oban we finally detected a road sign pointing us towards Ardanaiseig Hotel. The road became more narrow and at one point a single track only. No street lights and only the occasional car that followed and tried to overtake us in the most remote area you can imagine?!? The views towards the hills and lochs were breath taking. No noise, nothing. Just the sound of the wind, fresh air and grazing highland animals. Finally (and I say finally with such a relieve :-) ) we arrived at the hotel - all in one piece with a shimmer of daylight left. It had started raining, but it did not hold us back to have a quick walk around the hotel before the withdrawal to the library for a wee bedtime drink and chat with other hotel quests infront of an open burning fire. On arrival we were greeted by the concierge and guided into the 1900's style entrance hall. Our bedroom was located on the ground floor and had a little conservatory attached to it, which came in handy when we wanted to leave our room undetected. Even our room had a view towards the driveway, it also let us view the front side of the hotel, which was just spectacular. You were able to reserve a table for dinner and for breakfast you turned up taking any seat possible. We aimed for the window view- as you do :-). The drawing room held a piano and people were able to play and show off their talent. Next morning we walked around the gardens and along Loch Awe and admired the views towards the Loch, as well as the peaceful surroundings. Its an ideal place for couples and people or groups who are aiming for a very relaxing weekend. I don't think that there is any spa nor fitness club, but why would you need this with all the surrounding countryside you an explore. The amount of rooms are limited - maybe 15, each are individually decorated. Even some rooms might be a bit in need of updating, all the main functionalities worked perfectly well. Our shower was just amazing - large and powerful. There is ample of parking and the personell is very friendly. This place is not cheap (a large wine glass £9), but definitely worth a stay!

Yelp
This place is exceeded our expectations. While many places with an online presence show you a face that in person to which they don't live up Ardanaisieg is not one of those places! As spectacular as their web site is, the actual is breathtaking! Stellar staff, stellar service, stellar location! Ask for Lisa and Mark! When we pulled up, Lisa came out to greet us and called us by name... So friendly! My wife and I sent there on our belated honeymoon, and this was our "downtime weekend". It was magnificent! It rained the entire time (it is Scotland after all!), but a great supply of Wellington boots by the front door, gave us great access to the grounds and the woods which were something out of a myth or legend... The food was brilliant and, well let me put it this way, there was a party of 20 French that came over strictly for the dinner on Saturday night and had the 3 hour 9 course tasting dinner... Spectacular! Mark showed us a great time with the great selection of whiskys in the lounge, and the drawing room was spectacular! The place is a bit of a drive out a small single track road, but well worth it! Right on the shores of Loch Awe! I just hope it doesn't get too popular! We do want to go back!

Yelp
We spent a few days here after celebrating Hogmanay in Edinburgh. The place is fabulous! A beautiful setting on Loch Awe with lots of interesting sites to explore nearby. There are numerous day hikes within short driving distance from the estate. Oban is just over a half-hour drive away if a trip to town is necessary, but, it is easy to be drawn into the comfort of the estate's common rooms especially with a good book. The rooms are spacious and a loch view is recommended. The food is wonderful as is the wine and whisky selection.

Yelp
Beautiful setting with breathtaking scenery. Great for a romantic weekend away, or as a wedding venue ( if I ever get married ).
