‘Top Chef’ Contestant Sara Hauman on What the Show Has Taught Her | Eater Portland

"As the executive chef there, I opened Arden in Northwest Portland and focused on delicate, visually inventive preparations — lightly smoking olives and curling trout crudo and slivers of apple into roses over a swipe of horseradish cream." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Update!! Do Not Move Here! Living at this apartment complex has been one of the worst experiences I've ever had. From day one, it's been nothing but issues. The leasing office staff is unprofessional and tells you what you want to hear so you can leave. The moment you sign your lease, they stop caring. Maintenance is a joke. Requests are ignored for weeks, and when someone finally shows up, the work is rushed, poorly done, or they say completed when no one ever showed up. They act like you're inconveniencing them just by asking for basic repairs. The office staff is either unavailable or clueless when you need help. It’s been 5 months and still no one has came to inspect the mold and I still don’t have a kitchen draw. This place is poorly managed, and the lack of accountability is frustrating. Management changes so much that it's hard to hold someone accountable. The staff won't even provide tenants with the number to corporate. You can save yourself the stress and look elsewhere.

We had terrible experience with this apartment complex! We've been without AC since the start of our lease, and the manager, Bonnie, has been making empty promises since last summer. She's claimed that the corporate office is ordering parts, but it's now summer 2025 and still no fix. She even promised a window unit over 3 months ago, but it's still not here claiming it's due to "shipping issues." It's unacceptable that we pay rent and don't get basic maintenance. Avoid this complex if you can!

DO NOT MOVE HERE — THIS PLACE IS INHUMANE. I wouldn’t wish this living experience on anyone. I’ve been without A/C in the middle of summer — in Oklahoma heat — and still haven’t been given a timeline for when it will be fixed. I’ve submitted multiple maintenance requests, followed up repeatedly, and have been met with silence or empty promises. To make matters worse, I’ve been dealing with roaches, and a mysterious “balance” on my account that no one has clearly explained. Communication is non-existent. Accountability? Even worse. I’ve spoken to other residents AND staff members — and it’s not just me. Many other units are without working air conditioning., mold, and the water is ALWAYS OFF! People who work here are suffering too. That’s how broken this place is. This has been the most traumatic and stressful living situation I’ve ever experienced. Living here has taken a toll on my health, my finances, and my peace of mind. Management and corporate need to be investigated for neglect, safety issues, and inhumane living conditions. This isn’t just poor management — it’s borderline abuse. RUN. DO NOT MOVE HERE. You deserve to live somewhere clean, safe, and where basic utilities like A/C and water aren’t treated like a luxury. It's not just management - it's corporate!

Google
For the amount we pay here you would think we could be serviced adequate maintenance. The maintenance team is poor and do not respond to work orders. We put in a work order Thursday May 22nd (high priority), for a leaking ac unit which has now created black mold above the shower and yet no response or attempts to fix the problem. We still have issues from when we first moved in back in October 2024 that was never fixed but yet was marked completed on the requests. The office love giving you the run around. These apartments are poorly maintained and managed.

DO NOT MOVE HERE -- MOLD, FLOODING AND ZERO ACCOUNTABILITY!!! If I could give this place zero stars, I would. My sister's apartment flooded at the beginning of May, and instead of handling it properly, management left the situation to rot -- literally. The floors had to be pulled up and now there is mold EVERYWHERE! A professional mold inspector came and confirmed how dangerous the conditions are. He even said it was so bad that she needed to move out immediately for her health. Here's where it gets worse: The leasing manager Bonnie REFUSES to move her to another unit unless she pays first month's rent (EVEN THOUGH IT WAS THEIR NEGLIGENCE THAT LED TO THIS HEALTH HAZARD) Why should she have to pay again when the apartment shes already paying for is uninhabitable. My sister has asthma. Breathing in mold is not just uncomfortable. Its a serious health risk. AND THEY DONT CARE. This place does not prioritize tenant safety or well-being. If you value your health, peace of mind, and decent management.. RUN THE OTHER WAY!

My apartment has had roaches for months, likely from all of the holes from previous work done by maintenance. I've called multiple times but more often than not, nobody answers the phone so I have to walk to the office to talk to someone. They finally called pest control and so I prepared my apartment to be treated only for pest control to not show up. I took the day off work so I could get my dog out of the unit, as requested by pest control. I can't do that again. There's no way this isn't the worst apartment complex in the city.

Wasted W.

Google
Please for you sake do not move here they will not fix any thing in your apartment regardless of it being water, washer machine, mold, anything at all. There are bugs from the day you move in to the day you leave and they wont send pest control. The manager regardless of who they hire NEVER answer the phone. We tried putting in our thirty day notice and the manager literally told us to stop knocking on the door and walked away after I explained what we were trying to do. There's glass and garbage in the streets and parking lot. It's always flooded and smell of dog crap. It's not worth any money they ask and if they advertise "600" when they finally add on all the fees it will be around 900 for a single bedroom DO NOT MOVE HERE.

Sheroya greeted us when we walked in. She sat us down and I felt like apart of the family! Most sincere and nice woman. She took us on the golf cart and showed us around She knew everybody and greeted and small talked with them. It really spoke volumes. The other lady baby helped us as well and there both top notch I felt like I was at my family's house truly 10 out of 10 stars

Yelp
I'm extremely disappointed with the condition of my unit and the way maintenance issues have been handled--or more accurately, not handled. Several days ago, part of the ceiling above my bathtub was cut open exposing pipes and leaving behind debris, moldy insulation, and dirt both inside the tub and all over the bathroom floor. As of today, this damage still hasn't been repaired or even cleaned up properly. Not only is this a serious safety and health hazard, but the lack of communication and urgency from management is unacceptable. The hole in the ceiling remains open, there's visible mold and filth, and the entire bathroom is essentially unusable. I've reported the issue multiple times and have yet to receive a clear timeline or update on when it will be resolved. This isn't just about inconvenience--it's about basic habitability. No tenant should be expected to live under these conditions. If you're considering moving here, I strongly recommend you look elsewhere or at least get everything in writing before you sign a lease.

Athena P.

Yelp
I'm currently a resident and I'm looking to move. They are friendly but it feels like nothing is getting done. Certain things get cleared up and done but other are left hanging in the air. When I first moved in it was okay but then we started getting roaches here and there that was two years ago and its just getting worse. Cant even submit a request a pest control request through their website. when I do talk to leasing about getting the apartment sprayed I don't know if they actually sprayed the apartment or not.

Yelp
Updated review: 6.3.25 I moved into Arden Northwest in 2021. I am paying 761 for rent & next month I will be paying 791 which is unfair. I beg you please don't move to the Arden Northwest. They do not care about their tenants, and they raised the rent for no reason at all. The building management staff is also incompetent, so if anything goes wrong with your unit, don't expect any help. The maintenance people here don't do their jobs. I've put in so many maintenance requests over the past few months and they still haven't completed a single one. I get that they're not always able to get to things right away, but this is ridiculous. They've spent money on doing things like getting the wood floors redone at the pool, but they won't spend any money or time on finishing up maintenance. So I guess they're telling me it's OK for my unit to be broken, and I should just live with it. Why do they have maintenance staff if they don't get any request done. Then there's the neighborhood itself. It doesn't feel safe at all. I've almost gotten attacked by a dog, I've seen fights, and there have even been a couple of shootings nearby. The fact that they're not doing anything to make sure residents are safe really makes me think that no one here cares. For those who are thinking of living here expect to live at a property where the company doesn't care about you and has a price increase waiting for you. This probably applies other companies that own apartments like, CAF, CASE, and the surroundings, too, because I think they're all owned by the same corrupt company.

Yelp
I don't even know where to start let's start with please I'm warning you know DONT MOVE HERE. This place has been through 3 different managements in the past 3 years. This manage now has been the worst. We haven't had water in the past two week and they want to tell me that the city is fixing a major water leak there has been no construction working on it and when they did it was ONE DAY. I called to get money taken off my rent because we don't have water. Angie is the worst assistant manager! She was extremely rude and disrespectful to me and my husband. I asked her for a cooperate number she told me that I could google it because the internet is free. She hung up only me numerous of times. And receptionist Demetria hung up the phone me saying I was being "rude" when I wasn't. Destiny if full of crap she can't answer the damn phone. I mean you have to call the front desk 10 times before getting an answer. They turn off water without notice because of emergencies if y'all are having this many damn problem with the pipes then y'all need to be shut down!! I called the fire department for a apartment that had busted pipes and Angie the assisted manager told me I should have never called the fire department and I should have called the emergency maintenance number which mind you I did it goes straight to voicemail. And when you leave a voicemail they never show up. This place is just really really bad and causes so many issues!!! There is mold everywhere. They came and changed my lock while I was at work and didn't tell me so I couldn't get in my house! Even if they offer you cheap money to live here it's because if the complications that come along with it!!!! You will never have help here, water, or Maintence so DONT MOVE HERE! Can't call cooperate because they are no help at all. Every time I try to talk to someone they send me to Angie and she has an attitude like just really bad with customer service I tell her my issue and I have a solution and she says I'm not gonna explain your issue or suggest that to the manager but I'll let her know. I am counting my days until I move out!! Angie is very disrespectful and needs to be fired! She was very rude to me and my husband. I asked for cooperates number and she told me to google it because the internet is free. Every time I call with a problem and have a solution she tells me she isn't going to suggest my solution to the manage but will let her know the issue. She has hung up the phone in my face multiple times. I have her on voice recording saying all of these things. It just a very rude person and does not need to be in customer service! Demetria also hangs up the phone and you can't get a hold of the actually manager Destiny because she is never around.

Tori B.

Yelp
We've been waiting all day and I had to take off work because the patio door got hit by something and shattered and now I have a big hole where the door should be. Had to talk with 3 different people in the office only to be told call the emergency line if it isn't done before the office closes. No one seems to give a care about the need to do something about then glass door or the lack there of. Again not the place to live unless you just really need a roof over your head.

Yelp
ROACHES NOISE TRASH The manager, Amanda, is ineffective and dismissive, and the property is a dump, trash broken cars no grass. Moved into a roach infested apartment, took FIVE months before it was fixed. Trash everywhere, the maintenance man literally won't get off his golf to pick it up, if he can't reach it from his seat it doesn't get picked up. BROKEN CARS THAT NEVER MOVE. (Red car west side) SO SO SO SO Much noise. Have been trying to get help for four months on a barking dog, and don't even get me started on the POS that lives above me regularly waking me at 2am.

Yelp
These photos were taken over several months. This is what the place looks like at all times. Trash and piles of dog crap everywhere. You can find maintenance parked in resident and handicap parking or smoking somewhere but not cleaning up the trash. I lived there 2 years and paid 30$ a month for covered parking before the even replace the non working lights around the awning. My car might not have been vandalized if it wasn't pitch dark where I parked.

M. W.

Yelp
They gave me the run around when I was trying to sign the lease. Made me wait an extra two weeks for approval due to their own oversight, and because of this the price of the unit had gone up $80 some dollars. High crime area, lots of shootings at nearby apartments that have affected this apartment. Sometimes fights occur in the parking lot. There are no functional security gates and only one security guard who patrols at the pace of a comatose sloth. Maintenance guy is creepy and misogynistic, speaks to me and my roommate in a very strange infantilizing way (we are both young women). He always reeks of cigarette smoke when he comes, and i had to repeatedly note in the maintenance requests that he must wear a mask (IT IS A GLOBAL PANDEMIC.) it took probably five times for him to actually have on a face covering when he came to my unit, and even then it was not a covering that is approved by the CDC or WHO as an adequate filter for particles. Office seems very disorganized, upon move in I noted the dilapidated appliances (dishwasher, stove, and clothes dryer are both at LEAST 20 years old.) and was told by the young man at the office that I would be getting replacements very quickly, since an order had been made before I even moved in. This was Sept 2020, it is now February 2021 and I have not had my appliances replaced. I also must note that in all their materials, the Ashford / Arden Northwest claimed all apartments were fitted with new appliances. I wasn't expecting much, but I was definitely expecting more than what I got. The neighbors do not clean up after their dogs, the lawn all around my building is constantly covered in huge piles of dog feces, sometimes even on the concrete walkways. Gross! Inside the apartment is mostly fine, windows are very drafty though and for some reason the internet connections on all the walls were painted over, so in order to hook up our internet we had to use acetone and scratch away the paint. Basically this is not the place it seems to be, but it is not unlivable.

Jannelle S.

Yelp
Lived here a while. Has been fixed outside to look nice but maintance is horrible about fixing requests. Had the lawn crew break a small hole in our dining room window back in February and it's still not fixed. (It's labor day weekend) Turned our tub not draining well 2 months ago still waiting on a result. Please don't rent from these people

Lilia G.

Yelp
This apartment complex is TRASH. Management is TRASH. We applied here over three weeks ago and we're suppose to move in this week. Never got a call or anything, we tried calling and showed up a couple times but never got any answers. They never wanted to show us the apartment tour and when we went saying we were moving in this week they were acting surprised saying that they never approved us, YET THE LEASE WAS SIGNED BY THE PROPERTY MANAGER. So after discussing that we were taken to tour our "apartment". There was mold from the bottom of the bathroom sink and the apartment was not worth $670 per month. Mind you 670 is not bad pricing but not for a piece of sh**. Also every time we were in that office there was multiple residents complaining about how maintenance wasn't showing up to do their job. Save your time and your money!

Chase K.

Yelp
I just moved in 2 weeks ago. 1st off, they showed me a completely new, remodeled unit on the tour, then upon move in they gave me a completely different older/more rundown unit of which I hadn't even got to see. (They also have pictures of new appliances online but my unit had a fridge and stove from pre 1980.) I had to ask to see my unit the day of the move in. Because they showed me a better one that had brand new appliances (my unit had 20-50 year old appliances.) They basically tricked me into renting from them by showing me a better unit and then switching them on me. Not to mention, they couldn't show my actual unit to me until right before they closed that day (the day of my move in which was a Friday) because they didn't have it ready. And the manager doesn't work Saturdays, So I couldn't even verify that everything was working before they closed for the day and had to wait until Monday to even talk to someone about it. (This was a Friday so I couldn't even talk to anyone about it until Monday because the manager doesn't work in Saturday.) So I couldn't even live in my unit for the first few days because the toilet, stove, smoke alarm didn't work. I had to stay on my moms couch. I still had to pay rent as if everything worked though which isn't right whatsoever. I still would be without a toilet (2 weeks later, if I hadn't fixed it myself.) they still haven't bothered to fix my smoke alarm, fridge that leaks and won't stay closed, or my kitchen drawer that was just hanging halfway in the slot without tracks upon move in and still hasn't been touched by maintenance. I don't even think they respond to maintenance requests anymore unless you call them about it multiple times until they get annoyed of hearing you ask. (That is if they even answer the phone.) I left voicemails that were never returned. When I moved in, the stove didn't work (although it was replaced fairly quickly), (everything else I'm still waiting on.) the toilet constantly filled up so you had to turn off the water after using it. And then after filing maintenance requests for it and the other issues, they took my filling valve out of the toilet without fixing it, leaving me without a toilet for days! I ended up having to fix the toilet myself because they never bothered to come back and fix it. They actually made my toilet worse by removing a needed part and not replacing it. Also, the whole unit was dirty and had not been properly cleaned when I moved in; there was little pieces of glass everywhere on the floor and in the carpet. So I am to worried to walk in my apartment without shoes on. I had to deep clean it before moving anything in which took hours. And it still has a musty smell after the deep clean. The smoke alarm in my unit didn't work upon move in and still doesn't work 2 weeks later, which I'm pretty sure violates insurance policy/law, not to mention extremely unsafe. Also, my fridge leaks lots of water and doesn't stay closed. I have put in maintenance requests for everything, 4-6 total of things that didn't work upon move in!! and only one was fixed. The other issues haven't been bothered with. I'm sure the reviews would get a lot better if the owner made an effort to address these issues (as well as other issues other reviewers have posted.) It is the sole responsibility of the owner to have enough staff to take of their residents, to keep the place/ appliances maintained/working, to properly train their managers and maintenance people correctly so they can do their jobs correctly and up to par. (especially these first two), and it's the owners responsibility to train managers properly so they can train employees properly, but that doesn't seem to happen. If your manager doesn't know how to train well enough/properly (which seems to be the case), then the owner themself should train employees to be able to do more than say "I'll have to ask the manager," Who may or may not know the answer, and may not call back. Sadly, this place either does not have enough staff or the staff is just lazy, or not trained very well or a mixture of both. I think it's both. Laziness, lack or training, lack of quality employees. The owner will for sure take our money and will respond to these reviews with a generic response and email link, but would it not be better to just address the issues we are all mentioning..?

Herbie J.

Yelp
One star is too much, if I could leave zero stars I would. Don't be fooled by their rebranding from "Ashford Northwest" to "The Arden" It's like putting lipstick on a pig. I've lived here 2 years and the water gets cut off suddenly all over the property for "maintenance" with no estimated completion time. Every time you call the office, they need to speak to a manager who never seems to be available. Maintenance may as well be nonexistent, lights and outlets in our unit have been out for months and nothing has been done. The emergency maintenance line is also a Joke, weather is predicted to be over 100 today and maintenance was supposed to be here at least a week ago to try to assess what was wrong with our AC. When calling the emergency maintenance we were told, "we know you're suffering, but we can't do anything until Monday". it's been a "we'll handle it tomorrow" for the past two months!! Lights outside of apartments don't work either, hope you don't trip down stairs. The gates don't work, even though they claimed they were working on it 6 months ago! Save your sanity and money and look elsewhere. This complex claims they've been improving since we've moved here, but there hasn't been one in two years.

Kelcey T.

Yelp
If I could give this complex zero stars, I seriously would. This is the absolute WORST complex to live in. My car has been broken into twice now here. All the lights outside our buildings are broken and it's very dark everywhere at night. Maintenance is literally completely worthless here as nothing ever gets done and you have to learn to live without necessary appliances. Every single other resident we have met here absolutely hates it here and they are all moving out, if they haven't already. An elderly resident below us was handicapped and before she moved, she told us that her oven/stove did not work for a full year. Air conditioning is also a luxury in these apartments, ours has been broken over a year with no hopes of fixing it. This complex turns the water off more than any place I have ever heard of. In the winter, it is normal to not have hot water for multiple days here. It is also NOT a gated community as advertised, as the gates are broken and they attempted to fix them months ago and then just didn't finish it. I know of at least eight nearby apartments that have all flooded, some severely so. It is a common occurrence here. If you need to contact the office, you will have to call 30+ times to get ahold of anyone and I swear to you that is not an exaggeration at all. Save yourself the absolute nightmare and just don't rent here.

Rae F.

Yelp
Do not move here. It's noisy, almost everyone smokes weed so you'll smell it in your unit even if you don't, guns have been fired multiple times, and the office staff doesn't know what they're doing. Maintenance just marks orders as completed without actually coming to look at anything. Changed my renters insurance and it took them a YEAR of built up insurance fees to fix it, but not before I got locked out of my account with no way to see any charges for the month. Which means I had late fees on my account from not paying rent, but since it's the last month we're here, I wasn't able to see the last month's charges. Called over and over about it, most of the time you get sent to their voicemail. There's almost never a manager to speak with, and the girls who greet you when you walk in aren't able to actually fix anything account wise. Trash everywhere. People just stopped picking up after themselves. Water gets shut off for "maintenance" with no estimate of when it'll be back. Loved this place two years ago. It's not what it was.

C D.

Yelp
I cannot express enough how terrible this place is. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place. I reported a leak mid May and here we are almost September and the job is still not complete. It would not be an exaggeration if I said hundreds of calls to the office not answered, multiple days someone said they were coming and never showed, over 30 times I'm sure someone said they would call me back and didn't (2 of them yesterday). They gave me a concession for the horrible service in June but the problems persist. When I asked for the regional information they "didn't have it." The other reviews pictures are accurate and there is trash all over the place. They changed the name from Ashford to Arden and basically put lipstick on a mismanaged and run down facility. I am looking to buy a home now and get the heck out of here. From the girls at the front to the assistant manager the response is deplorable. The manager is new but already not displaying a strong case for follow up.
