I just moved in 2 weeks ago. 1st off, they showed me a completely new, remodeled unit on the tour, then upon move in they gave me a completely different older/more rundown unit of which I hadn't even got to see. (They also have pictures of new appliances online but my unit had a fridge and stove from pre 1980.)
I had to ask to see my unit the day of the move in. Because they showed me a better one that had brand new appliances (my unit had 20-50 year old appliances.) They basically tricked me into renting from them by showing me a better unit and then switching them on me. Not to mention, they couldn't show my actual unit to me until right before they closed that day (the day of my move in which was a Friday) because they didn't have it ready. And the manager doesn't work Saturdays, So I couldn't even verify that everything was working before they closed for the day and had to wait until Monday to even talk to someone about it. (This was a Friday so I couldn't even talk to anyone about it until Monday because the manager doesn't work in Saturday.) So I couldn't even live in my unit for the first few days because the toilet, stove, smoke alarm didn't work. I had to stay on my moms couch. I still had to pay rent as if everything worked though which isn't right whatsoever. I still would be without a toilet (2 weeks later, if I hadn't fixed it myself.) they still haven't bothered to fix my smoke alarm, fridge that leaks and won't stay closed, or my kitchen drawer that was just hanging halfway in the slot without tracks upon move in and still hasn't been touched by maintenance. I don't even think they respond to maintenance requests anymore unless you call them about it multiple times until they get annoyed of hearing you ask. (That is if they even answer the phone.) I left voicemails that were never returned.
When I moved in, the stove didn't work (although it was replaced fairly quickly), (everything else I'm still waiting on.) the toilet constantly filled up so you had to turn off the water after using it. And then after filing maintenance requests for it and the other issues, they took my filling valve out of the toilet without fixing it, leaving me without a toilet for days! I ended up having to fix the toilet myself because they never bothered to come back and fix it. They actually made my toilet worse by removing a needed part and not replacing it.
Also, the whole unit was dirty and had not been properly cleaned when I moved in; there was little pieces of glass everywhere on the floor and in the carpet. So I am to worried to walk in my apartment without shoes on. I had to deep clean it before moving anything in which took hours. And it still has a musty smell after the deep clean.
The smoke alarm in my unit didn't work upon move in and still doesn't work 2 weeks later, which I'm pretty sure violates insurance policy/law, not to mention extremely unsafe. Also, my fridge leaks lots of water and doesn't stay closed. I have put in maintenance requests for everything, 4-6 total of things that didn't work upon move in!! and only one was fixed. The other issues haven't been bothered with.
I'm sure the reviews would get a lot better if the owner made an effort to address these issues (as well as other issues other reviewers have posted.)
It is the sole responsibility of the owner to have enough staff to take of their residents, to keep the place/ appliances maintained/working, to properly train their managers and maintenance people correctly so they can do their jobs correctly and up to par. (especially these first two), and it's the owners responsibility to train managers properly so they can train employees properly, but that doesn't seem to happen. If your manager doesn't know how to train well enough/properly (which seems to be the case), then the owner themself should train employees to be able to do more than say "I'll have to ask the manager," Who may or may not know the answer, and may not call back. Sadly, this place either does not have enough staff or the staff is just lazy, or not trained very well or a mixture of both. I think it's both. Laziness, lack or training, lack of quality employees.
The owner will for sure take our money and will respond to these reviews with a generic response and email link, but would it not be better to just address the issues we are all mentioning..?
