Arenales - Review - Centro - San Sebastián - The Infatuation

"Arenales is an oasis from the busy, standing-room-only pintxo madness of the Old Town. The owners greet you right away when you walk in the door, and you can find a short menu on a chalkboard that’s hanging above the bar with a bunch of different small plates. Fresh produce is picked up from the market in the mornings, and the whole philosophy here is less is more—a prime example being the roasted carrots that come served over labneh and garnished with torn herbs. The wine list is a selection of hard-to-find natural bottles, so impressive diners and followers often beg to get them shipped home." - Marti Buckley

We came to San Sebastián for the food—and this place completely blew us away. We didn’t have a reservation and just walked in for a casual dinner, but what we got was anything but ordinary. The menu is small, but every single dish sounds (and tastes) incredible. The way they combine seasonal, local ingredients is just next level—every bite was an explosion of flavor. We genuinely had fun while eating, which says a lot. The service was super friendly and charming, and the atmosphere is cozy and full of character. They also have an amazing selection of natural wines, which paired beautifully with the food. The price-to-quality ratio is more than fair, and we’d absolutely come back in a heartbeat. Can’t recommend it enough—this spot is a real gem.

Within our trip in Donostia, this was the best restaurant we had. The food was exquisite. It was a combination of really fine dining, but keeping it simple and nice. We really liked the vibes from the servant and the local. On top of it, they also gave us immediatly a table without reservation, but we recommend to reserve before.

What a great meal! Tasty, fresh, loads of veg and yummy flavour combos. Highly highly recommend for a nice sit down meal and break from pintxos. The tuna was epic as were the ravioli. Also, EUR 2.50 highly quaffable wine in a resto? Divine. Service is perfunctory and the space is tiny but it adds to the charm. Call to book.

When we walked in we thought we had the wrong place and wondered what the gal at our hotel was thinking. But after the first bite we realized we were in a very special place. The place feel is like an American dive bar but the food and service are extraordinary. I was skeptical of the flavor combinations based on the descriptions on the menu and was completely blown away by how well everything worked. I ordered my first glass of wine and should have had the server pick it because he chose my second glass and it was perfect. Our 20 year old was with us and they are primarily a vegetarian but will eat fish occasionally which is good because they were able to eat all of the things we ordered with only slight modifications (like us removing the ham from on top of one of the dishes). The menu is limited but they focus on local and seasonal ingredients which means we expect that the menu changes fairly frequently. When we are in San Sebastián again, we will be going back to see what other amazing things they produce out of their tiny kitchen. And for reference, we ordered 5 plates between the 3 of us and it was plenty. Definitely a hidden gem.

Incredible service, friendly and polite, attentive and careful. The food was truly delicious. I didn't have high expectations (idk why) but it just blew me away! And the wine... they have a great selection of natural, local wines. Atmosphere was super cosy. A little gem in the centre of San Sebastian. I can definitely recommend!

We ate here 3 years ago and thought it was magical. Yesterday was not so impressive. Expensive and although the food was good it wasn’t special. No sparkle.
