I grew up in Houston and remember visiting Marini's Empanada House located on Westheimer, in the Montrose area. That was a hip, trendy section of Westheimer, back in the 1970s/80s). Unfortunately, the restaurant burned down in 1985. I never had another empanada after that, until...
Yesterday, I had dinner at a friend's home. One of the items served was empanadas from Argentina Bakery. The food had cooled to room temperature, but was still delicious. The crust was amazingly flaky and the filling was quite tasty. I liked it so much, that I visited the bakery this morning.
When I walked in, the crowd was very diverse, further illustrating the bakery's appeal.
It has two nice dining areas, including a 3 table bistro area outside. I ordered a dozen empanadas of various types. My plan was to take them home, but they smelled so good, I decided to have a couple before leaving. Although a beautiful Texas Spring day, families occupied all the outside tables, so I dined inside.
Every empanada I sampled (beef/egg/jalapeño, ham & cheese and chicken & cheese) were great. Two were a satisfying meal for me, but once I got home I ate a third one.
Their dessert and cake displays looked amazing, so the next time I stop by, I'll order dessert to go with my empanada(s).
One last thing: If you're in Houston, Marini's Empanada House is back and there are a couple locations from which to choose.
