I had one of the best book store experiences of my life at Argos.
Wandering the streets of Grand Rapids, looking for a knitting store that apparently was a figment of the internet's imagination, I stumbled across this marvelous store that really ought to invest in some cots or couches so shoppers have someplace to nap, because odds are they're going to be there a while.
Two large rooms filled with every genre of book imaginable, old and new. When I imagine my ideal city, there is a store a block from my house that has a giant poetry section and also sells comics. Bang, here's Argo. Nabbed some X-Men comics I'd been missing, but spent most of my time amazed at the gems in the poetry aisle. They had every one of Kenneth Rexroth's translations that he did for New Directions. Hell yes. Also grabbed a great anthology of Mexican poetry edited by Octavio Paz. Never knew it existed. Although I did come up empty in my never ending search for some Phillip Lamantia, Argos delivered in just about every other way. Add to that the fact that the gentleman behind the counter couldn't have been any more friendly or helpful and this place is all aces.
Next time I go, I'm going with a wheelbarrow.
