Do American Teens Still Need the Mall? | Eater

"A vast, one-floor labyrinth of kitsch and spectacle anchored by a giant carousel and neighboring entertainment attractions, this mall’s Food Hall mixes national chains with local oddities and novelty stores, resulting in a sensory parade of Minions merch, off-brand rides, and oversized licensed tat. Teenagers and international students orbit the food options — from underwhelming chain slices to paleta stands — bonding over mutual disdain for certain staples while regulars grab over-salted, blockbuster-ready meals before a movie. The place feels lively and crowded, threaded with both mall-rat nostalgia and contemporary anxieties (including recent memories of a shooting), making it equal parts refuge, spectacle, and reminder of mall-era contradictions." - Jamie Loftus

Google
I’ve been to Arizona Mills a few times — it’s a nice mix of outlet and regular stores. The food hall is pretty decent, and it’s connected to LEGOLAND and a movie theater, which makes it a fun spot to hang out. There’s also plenty of parking, which is a plus!

Google
Wow, one of the most chill malls i have visited. It has many stores for younger audiences and a great selection of boutiques for the older generations. There is a movie theater, sea world, and Legoland. There is a huge food court and very clean. I appreciate the service

Trevor Childs

Google
The mall is HUGE and they have not just the mall stuff you find everywhere, but cool experience and adventure spots for the kids. There's some crazy bubble experience spot, a carousel in the food court, LegoLand, SeaLife Aquarium, and Rainforest Cafe among others. Definitely worth a walk through. However, we were there during a crazy rainstorm and it turns out half the skylights in the food court literally leak water like they were open to the sky. I mean they had to shut half the court down and turn off the carousel due to flooding. But rain in the desert is rare. So check it out on a hot day.

Google
Arizona Mills is a happening place! We visited on the afternoon of Black Friday to go to Box Lunch and the mall was packed with people doing holiday shopping. We passed by the Lego store, the aquarium, and the bubble experiences, all of which look very fun. We saw that they had a merry go round next to the food court that looked old and classic. After we left Box lunch we ran into some elves who gave our kids some candy canes and gave us some $10 visa gift cards just to spread holiday cheer! Thanks Arizona Mills!

Google
I really enjoyed this mall! Best one I've been to in a while. It has so many stores that you can find anything your looking for here. Kid friendly.

Google
This mall is incredible! It has an aquarium, Legoland, movie theater, and many more! I wish I had more time to explore it but I couldn't due to my schedule on that day. I see things for those who loves sports, anime, stationary, clothes, shoes, etc. Check it out if you have not.

Google
Good area for shopping centre complete with Cinemas,Lego store and Sealife aquarium we like visit here for bring our kids for summer break watching cinema and play carousel with take indoor train inside this shopping mall

Stephanie Ellis

Google
This is a very nice mall for kids and adults. There's lots of kid entertainment including an aquarium, Rain Forrest Cafe, Lego, train rides etc., throughout the mall along with great boutiques and designer stores for women and men including Marshalls, Burlington, Ross and dad's, some of my favorite stores!

Yelp
This is a huge family friendly indoor mall with more than 150 retailers including a lot of outlet stores such as American Eagle, Chico's, Old Navyx Levi's and more, 27 dining options including a food court, and a Harkins theatre with IMAX that boasts Arizona's largest and only full size IMAX screen. It's a fun place for kids as they also have the Legoland Discovery Center, Sea Life Arizona Aquarium, Tilt Studio- 40,000 sq ft arcade with more than 150 arcade and video games as well as laser tag and virtual reality experiences. Also, the Rainforest Cafe is always a fun place to eat and shop. The carousel seems to be pretty popular every time I've been here. The one thing I found kinda strange is that they don't have a Panda Express here, haha! I think it's like the only mall I've been to without Panda. Other than that, they have a lot of the typical mall eateries like Auntie Anne's Pretzels, Cinnabon, Dairy Queen, Haagen-Dazs, Sbarro, and Wetzel's Pretzels. They're open everyday from 9AM and is one mile from start to end so it's a great place to get some steps and stay cool during the hot summer months!

Yelp
Bubble Planet (inside AZ Mills Mall) Upon arrival we were greeted with a warm welcome, my family and I brought passes for online using voucher code Bubble15pho Selection: General admission. The value for what we paid was beyond great, I felt like a kid again, I believe had more fun than my younger cousins, every room we walked into was a new experience and they had mini Photo Booth areas, definitely worth it. It's a must for families with little ones, and believe me, as an adult you will love this place. Make sure your phone is fully charged as you will want to take many pics. 10/10.

Yelp
We have a mall back home in California that in the 70's was great now not so much. This ones better. It's clean and fairly full, not a lot of empty space. A good variety of different types of stores and restaurants. My one knock is the floor space in the walking area is crowded with a lot of kiosks. Making you watch your step. Last words...it's cool inside.
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
This is a really nice and big indoor mall with a wide variety of clothing stores and restaurants to browse. It also includes a Harkins theater, aquarium, and Legoland. There's a carousel and train for the kiddos. There's a lot to see and it's a nice place for a walk and some window shopping. Most of the places close at 8pm. It's worth exploring if you love shopping.
google avatar

Richard T.

Yelp
We walked the mall and were surprised how big it is...grabbed a burger at Johnny Rockets and it was the best Johnny Rockets burger I have ever had. I have eaten at Appr 8 locations. Best service I've had anywhere in years.

Yelp
I have to agree with some of the other reviewers that this mall is on the sketchy side, but it does offer a variety of stores, experiences, options in the food court, etc... We've been going to this area specifically to visit Pickle Mall for pickleball a lot lately. On a recent visit, I took my daughter and her friend to the main portion of the mall to grab some food... We entered by the movie theater, looked around the food court, hopped on a carousel ride ($5 per ride), but the girls had fun, and then purchased some Wetzel's Pretzels. I would definitely go back solo but make sure to watch my surroundings. There are quite a few decent shopping options, afterall. Note: I definitely would not let my kids go to this mall without adult supervision.

Yelp
Arizona Mills is a great place to get your steps and explore the different shops. I will say they have evolved over the years with a lot of the larger brands pulling out of this mall, but there enters some other small business type stores. Love the giant circle of layout and even how they've remodeled the food court (looks much better now, more modernized). I wish they would plant a lot more trees to help with the AZ heat and offering shaded areas with parking. But then again, this is the same for most malls that don't have parking structures.
google avatar

Yelp
It's a mall. Older but it's ok still. Has all the typical stuff and mall attractions. Stores include Burlington, Ross, 5 below, Marshalls, foot locker, forever 21, Vans, bath and body works, Spencer's, Old Navy, Nike, and a food court. There's also Harkins theater, imax, Lego land store, and a Sea Life aquarium. There's also a Harkins theater, and IMAX, and a food court.
google avatar

Rick G.

Yelp
I was always under the impression this mall was anoutlet center, but I'm sure I'm wrong as the retailers' prices are pretty much in line with any other retail establishment in the area with a few exceptions here or there. Nevertheless, we're glad to see vast improvements, more retail variety, a myriad of eats, along with old standbys and the new post covid hustle and bustle at this Simon property. But there are some advantages to Arizona Mills as a whole. Among the reasons, it's a great place to take and entertain the kids, go on a cheap date with quite a few junk food counters and grab some decent restos, do some shopping, get out of the sun, or catch an IMAX movie!

Veronica A.

Yelp
Looks of stores but wish more food options. It was a good exercise and out of the heat

Yelp
It's a typical mall so expect to see mostly clothing and shoe stores. I noticed that many of the stores don't accept cash so be prepared and bring a credit card. Maybe it was due to today being a holiday, but a lot of the eateries like the coffee and pretzel places opened later than the regular business hours or were closed entirely like Fatburger and the Rainforest Cafe. Or maybe there was no reason to open on time because this place had very little foot traffic. Some of the shoe shiners were kind of creepy. One guy kept trying to get me to come over because he "got credit" as long as he talked to me. I don't know what that was about but I didn't stop walking. I was here to visit the aquarium so I didn't stay too long after I was done.

Yelp
A pretty standard "Mills" mall. There's a bunch of stores and a lot of walking. Prices are at mall standard.

Susan D.

Yelp
Nice and clean. Very busy and found all we needed. Went Father Day and enjoyed the mall.

Kimbeley C.

Yelp
We were visiting Arizona from overseas and came across Arizona Mills. 95% of the mall is amazing, a great range of shops. Did lots of shopping and also enjoyed the Legoland and SeaWorld additions. Only sour note - avoid the dermalactives kiosk like the plague, they are horrible people who pressure you into buying and take advantage of the younger demographic (we watched for a bit after my teenager was sucked in by them). A bit sad that Arizona mills never replied to my emailed complaint about that kiosk. Otherwise we would have had a great time here.

Yelp
Love this mall for the diversity of stores, artwork, fountains, and atmosphere. The downside is the bathrooms as they are not very clean and often have an odor. If that improved then this would be a 5-star mall.

Matthew S R.

Yelp
I started going to this mall since I was 13 years old, now I'm in my 40s. The whole shopping centre has definitely made a HUGE CHANGE! I started by going to the Food Court, went to Sbarros it was definetely a HIT! Then I went to Harkins to see Love Hurts, movie was great, kinda scary. Then I went to Lids, Nike. Service was 10/10. I went to the Lego store, and just started to get bunch of legos, I almost spend $1,000 in there. *crazy* Then I went to Rainforest Cafe, it was okay there?? Definitely going. to start shopping here again like I used to!

Yelp
It's true this mall one of the renowned in the area however when it comes to shopping criteria, it'ssomething else. The mall is large and includes tens and tens of shops nevertheless it lacks the leading retails departments such as Macy's and JC PENNY. The ambiance is not vibrant and the floor needs renovation in some areas I give a credit to this property for having H&M, IMAX theatre and an ample parking. My review doesn't mean it's a NO to this mall however it's not going to be my first choice to shop for sure.
google avatar

Larry M.

Yelp
This mall is very well maintained. It's very clean with lots of shopping options. The food court is very clean with lots of options to eat and drink. Very reasonably priced. There's lots of stores to choose from. From the restaurants to stores you can spend all day here and relax while your loved ones use the credit cards. This mall is kept very clean.
google avatar

Courtney H.

Yelp
We love this mall! It's so massive and filled with so many stores and food places. Plenty of rides and things to do. Aquarium, theater, legoland, everything! Loved the food court and the many options. During a weekday it wasn't busy at all. The only complaint is the bathrooms. They need cleaned better. They smell horrible and they're so gross. But the rest of the mall was clean and nice

Yelp
This is a great family mall located in Tempe, Az. There are a lot of things to do for kids, including a ln aquarium, Merry Go Round, Arcade, Movie Theater, and Children's Play area. The stores are not " High End", but affordable places to shop, like Marshalls & Forever 21. There is a large Food Court and Restrooms are plentiful. The mall is on one story, with convenient parking. Mask use is enforced.

Yelp
This is not a good choice if you are handicapped like my wife and I. We had gone here to visit a couple of shops in particular, one being Ross. After cruising the lot for a few minutes it became apparent that they do not welcome handicapped people near Ross. There were 10 handicap places near a mall entrance, but none near Ross' entrance. I finally dropped my wife off in front of Ross and found the closest handicap parking by the aquarium. Ross was absolutely slammed with only two cashiers and a line snaking through the children's department. We were looking for dog clothes for our 3 pound yorkie because we had found one here before that she liked. After cruising the pet section it looked like they stopped carrying pet clothes. Stay tuned. Disappointed, we walked through the rest of the mall finding a nice $3 dog toy at D&D. We also found some great deals at Dickies. Anyway, after deciding to go back through Ross to leave my wife decided she liked one of the dog toys they had. They had opened all registers and the line moved quickly. Lo and behold, all of the pet clothes were on a rack at the very end of the checkout line. With no time to browse without holding up the line, we had to come away disappointed but at least we now know they still carry pet clothes. Walking out we left by the aquarium and decided to visit it next time instead of wasting time with the rest of the mall - except maybe dickies.

Yelp
As many shootings have happened at this mall I can't believe it's still open. The exits are always cluttered and most of the employees for the mall as security are unprofessional and rude
google avatar

Sheena H.

Yelp
Variety of stores, but the state of the restroom is unacceptable. I got there when they first opened and they were still a hot mess. That leads me to believe that they didn't clean it when they closed the day before. As far as the stores... I love Crocs, all of the outlets, the crystal store (Black Market I think) and the exercise you get from walking the mall.
google avatar

Jean M.

Yelp
My kids and I stopped by on a Tuesday morning to check out this mall. What a fantastic place! While they might consider bringing back the water bottle filling stations, I was pleased to find the bathrooms quite clean and the overall layout of the mall very orderly. Although the Disney Store mentioned online is no longer there, the food court offers a variety of great options and the kids play area is definitely a highlight.
google avatar

Maya K.

Yelp
Idk why this mall has such terrible ratings :( Sure, this mall could use a makeover but it's really not as bad as people are making it out to be. It def looks run down, but there's lots of great stores & great deals here that make up for it! The only reason people think it's "ghetto" is because it doesn't look like all those upgraded shopping malls. I've never had a bad experience coming here with the customers or employees and I come here regularly! If anything, Scottsdale mall is way too congested and if I just want something simple I just come to this mall to avoid the craziness of the crowds!

Yelp
I hit a lot of Simon Malls around the country for gift card deals. Found myself in AZ the day before Thanksgiving and wanted to purchase their Black Friday deal. Rolled in to find the service desk unmanned with no sign of when they'd return. I called the number shown at the counter and got mall security, and they came and didn't have any idea either. After 30 minutes, a couple of kids lazily returned from their break... all the workers at the same time during business hours. I wish that was the end of it, but this untrained staff had no idea how to sell the gift card promo and had to video call their boss to be walked through it. This is after they arrogantly told me they know how to do it and then didn't. The 5th card I tried to buy wouldn't activate on their end so I only left with 4 cards. When I got home I found out the 4th card they gave me was the wrong one. And the 5th card they couldn't get to activate? It was the same card they sold on the 4th transaction. So after spending an hour at this mall on Wednesday, I'm back here on a Friday for an hour trying to solve this mess. And I have a flight to catch!

Yelp
This Mall has changed drastically!!! I haven't gone here in years!! There are still the young 10-16 yr old kids hanging out with their friends which, is cute as they weren't causing any trouble but were just walking around and hanging out talking amongst themselves. They look like babies...too cute!!! (Remembering when my kids were that small and I'd drop them off with money to hang in the mall for an hour or 2). Kids were good kids back then and these kids were actually being very good kids. The stores inside are all well lit and the parking lot has high tech security services which was a surprise ... they sit outside in high towers and roam the lots and mall making one feel safe, going to their vehicles. It was nice to stop there to meet up with pals and sit in the food court chit chatting. Honestly, I'm surprised that this Mall is even still there but glad that they cleaned it up. I also noticed that they have the cutest motorized motorcycle bikes for kids to ride in the mall along side their parents. It was the cutest thing ever. Awee I noticed that they have electronic charging stations in the parking lot for electric cars to charge up. You are now able to charge your Teslas,Kia V6 and Alfa Romeos here I'd definitely go again as it's not crowded and a good place to walk around indoors for exercise since it's not too big and definitely not crowded
google avatar

Brenda L.

Yelp
We came here in hopes to find something to wear for a concert and um what a mistake. I was not expecting anything above average of course but um anything decent would have done. Instead I found most stores closed. Super dirty floors. Lack of AC. Lots and lots of people. Due to the absence of stores, well the ones that were open had a lot of people. Needless to say, I do not recommend this place. There should be better options in the area.
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
Decided to come to mall to do some shopping. Our son, age 22 months was playing in children's play area. 2 unattended boys decided, the area was a parkour playground. Jumping on equipment the entire time. Luckily, my husband prevented them from hitting my son. Security should be watchful for this behavior, not just the shoplifting that happens. Hopefully, parents will teach their children not to do this. Otherwise, the nearby malls, Chandler Fashion and Tempe Marketplace don't have this sort of behavior, in the play areas.
google avatar

Yelp
Great Mall to spend the day at dining an Aquarium a small Lego land many unique shops and restaurants to choose from . Great for family of all ages huge enjoy Arizona mills in AZ and Ontario Mills in CA
google avatar

Joyce W.

Yelp
A very large and expansive mall that's got many stores at different price points, from higher end brands to outlets of now everyday apparel and footwear brands. There's also a large food court with a great variety of cuisines, mostly in the friendly affordable price range, casual dining options, and for a more unique experience, there's even a Rainforest Cafe which are few and far between and shows this mall is still going pretty strong to be able to support a Rainforest Cafe. We like that it feels a little like a mall from the 90s with pet stores and an IMAX theatre, but still with tons of newer brands and although overall the mall feels a bit dated, it was very family friendly, reasonably priced for the average consumer, and there were a good crowd the day we went, and yes it was a holiday, but it still shows it's a great places to shop and hang out at on an my average hot day in Phoenix.

Yelp
They've updated this mall since I was here a year ago. It seemed cleaner and had an upbeat vibe. Lots of new stores (hippie shop & a Karma shop) and a new fresh juice shop and A YoYo yogurt. I did notice that most of the shoe stores were geared towards men or both genders. I enjoyed the walk around. I was sad to see the nutrition store gone and the sports store. JC penny's is gone and so is BeBe sport. But Vickie Secrets is going strong. Chicos is still there; As was my favorite metaphysical gem store. Yes Wentzel's pretzel still has a wait line. Oh lest I forget, the iMax and movies are still in season. They even have a CBD store on both sides of mall. Pretty appealing for everyone's tastes. I like to come for the walk, a snack and of course shopping!
google avatar

Yelp
My second time here at the Mills, an indoor outlet shopping mall that houses a few 'anchor' stores such as Old Navy, H&M & F21, with a Legoland Discovery Center & two theaters - Harkins & IMAX...which were not open during my visit 4/10/2021. No Food Court, yet one full-service restaurant called Rainforest & handful of drinks, snacks & pretzel vendors. There are no communal seating options due to C-19. Easy access from US 60 & I-10.
google avatar

Sara M.

Yelp
It's been a while since I went to AZ Mills and I remember why I didn't go often. Sadly there really isn't anything here that I cannot find other places closer. There are outlet stores and not very many of them. They do have the SEA LIFE aquarium place which I remember was not that great but a cool place to check out if you haven't been. Now, what I DO like is you do get some really great deals on the things you do find. I just really wish there were more stores. The Rainforest Cafe is pretty neat to eat at as well if you have never been. Overall, there is great deals but you have to look for them and there isn't a big selection of stores.

Yelp
This review is specifically for the massage shop at this mall. I believe the name of the business is "O'Chi Reflexology". BE AWARE AND CAUTIOS ABOUT THIS SHOP!! :( I naively walked in there because the older gentleman working for this place, and who stands outside the store luring people into the store offered a $10 massage for an 8-minute period. Once I was having the massage, the old man asked several times if I wanted to upgrade to a half hour massage for more money.... he did this several times. I politely declined several times. When I went to pay the $10 fee, the old man pointed at his made-up cardboard sign that requested tips for the rendered service. I figured a 20% "voluntold" tip will do, so I handed him a $5 bill to get change back. The old man had the audacity to wave me off as he put the money away. I asked for my change back... he proceeded to give me a couple of dollars back, again, shameless audacity to choose for me what his tip should be. A dollar out of my pocket is not a big deal, but I rather give it freely than have it taken from me. Bullying is all you will get at this shop!!! You have been warned!!!

Angelina S.

Yelp
A great place to shop, window shop or people watch. Love the vibe and the energy. The people are great.
google avatar

Megan K.

Yelp
Every time I've gone here I've been able to find really good deals. That being said... Any female walking in here alone or just with a friend should be careful and aware of their surroundings. My coworker on Saturday morning was followed around the mall by two men who eventually came to talk to her and wouldn't stop touching/groping her. She luckily found someone to walk her to her car (Marshall's security) and the two men stood watching her leave outside of the mall. This is not the first time this has happened and men often creep on women here. It's a great mall for groups just be aware at all times if you go alone! Creepy men. Not sure what the mall could do to help but it is something to think about.
google avatar

Nichole V.

Yelp
I was expecting an outlet mall. This was more of a discount shopping center. (Ross, Burlington, DD's Discounts...) The weed smell was pretty consistent throughout the inclosed structure. If you're looking for an Outlet mall, try the Tanger Outlet in Glendale or the Phoenix Premium Outlet in Chandler.
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Don't waste your time here . Period . Drive the 10 minutes or so down to the Wild horse Pass outlets and shop at real stores.
google avatar

Samantha Z.

Yelp
That place was filthy! Floors and bathrooms! The floors were sticky in certain places and it looks like it hasn't been swept and mopped for months. Upkeep is just terrible and so was the smell.
google avatar

Gretchen G.

Yelp
I think this is an outlet mall? But I'm not sure. We went in to check out the Lego store which was awesome! They had some lego sets I've never seen before and some clearance items which is awesome because lego sets are expensive. We let the kids ride this motorized motorcycle things, we wouldn't normally do this because it's so expensive but we wanted them to have a little fun since Halloween would be different this year without trick or treating.
google avatar

Anthony D.

Yelp
The lack of decent food choices and early closure can easily eliminate this from your weekend night shopping/browsing choice. I've never in my life seen a shopping mall that shuts down at 8:30 on a Saturday night. How insane is that?!? Secondly, substandard and low rated restaurants abound near and in this place virtually guaranteeing you need to drive elsewhere for decent food. Just stay away!
google avatar

Ana L.

Yelp
Great mall! It's super big I feel you can find anything. I was visiting Arizona with my boyfriend we passed to this mall and we were just shocked in how big it is, cheap and nice. Definitely would recommend this mall.
google avatar

Stephanie U.

Yelp
This was our first time visiting this mall. This place had a little bit of everything! Movie theater, restaurants, fast food, a HUGE variety of shopping and even an arcade. My daughter especially enjoyed the trampoline. This place is worth the steps!
google avatar

Milo D.

Yelp
Bem meia bomba, Nike e adidas e tudo tosco. Não vale a pena. Bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb
google avatar

Jim V.

Yelp
I remember all the hype about this mall before it was built. Then it opened and although never quite finished as promised it did remain a work in progress and was a pretty awesome place to visit. Over the years and because of them rumors about store closures, gang activity and the quality of stores, I just steered clear. My curiosity got the best of me and I wanted to visit Sea Life Aquarium, I did loop the entire mall and it just seemed bleak and nearly devoid of patrons. It was the exterior and parking area that I found most uncomfortable and eerily unsafe. I'm not sure what it would take to get me to return, nothing comes to mind, it certainly isn't the very underwhelming Sea Life Aquarium.
google avatar

Nikki P.

Yelp
I visited this location to purchase shoes for work. My first turnoff was that I tried calling 4 times but no one ever answered. To my disappointment, when I made it to the store there were a group of workers just standing around laughing, using language not acceptable in a work atmosphere. The young Man that did help me is the reason for the 3 stars. He was attentive and helped me choose a shoe to my liking. Please let your staff know that it is very distasteful behavior to use curse words (even if you are talking amongst yourself) while in a work environment. One young Lady working there was even disrespectful to her own coworker, which I noticed and informed him that she should not be speaking to him in that manner. She should know better. Will I return, I'm not yet sure. Train your staff on how to act around customers and I MAY return as a customer.

Yelp
Noticed the police parked in the back of the parking lot. Did not give me a great first impression and made me a little uneasy as I was traveling by myself. Upon entering the mall it seems a lot smaller than I imagined. Average size food court. There's an aquarium, but after talking to customer service, decided to skip it. Instead of strollers, they have motorcycles that you can ride throughout the mall with neon lights which were pretty cool and different. Average stores an average prices.
